overall personality:
séamus has always been shy, and has always been more than a little bit awkward around people. he’s not a horrible conversationalist, but he’s not a good one either, and he ends up avoiding conversation because he’s worried that other people will judge him for his stutter and his inability to keep an interesting conversation going. this was exacerbated by his being placed into the slytherin house, which isn’t known for being the most tolerant. shay would rather avoid altogether by not talking to people than put himself in a position to be hurt by what other people say about him.
due to his shyness and gentle nature, most people don’t believe that séamus could really be sorted into the slytherin house. what they don’t see is that he is determined to prove himself as a true wizard, since there are still people who believe muggleborns to be beneath wizards born of other wizards. when the sorting hat gave him the choice between hufflepuff and slytherin, séamus chose the latter because he believed that he could do more good there in changing people’s opinions of muggleborns. while his shyness has gotten in the way off that goal, being in the snake’s nest has cause séamus to become cunning, if only to avoid those who were more cunning than him. shay will probably never embody the slytherin house characteristic of being manipulative, but he’s got the other two down fairly well.
when it comes to intelligence, séamus fails rather spectacularly at book reading. he prefers the classes that are hands on, not theoretical, and has skipped more than on essay simply because he doesn’t know how to put his thoughts into words. when it comes to the practical side of things, shay’s professors are often surprised by how well he does, since he does so poorly on the bookwork side of things. he’s not a magical genius by any means, but he can hold his own, and that’s all he really wants.

history:
shay’s story starts in a quaint little irish bed and breakfast, many years ago. his parents met after his father moved to england to start a bakery, and their love was sickly-sweet, right out of a fairy tale. they fell in love and got married in a year, and then about a year after that had their first (and only) child, séamus. they doted on their son and tried to ignore the fact that sometimes, strange things happened in their house – stuffed animals that shay disliked went missing and were sometimes found weeks later, exploded, and the family’s gerbils occasionally seemed to switch colors, both the beginning signs of séamus’s magical powers. the krakauers loved their son, though, and refused to believe that he could be a cause of such strange events, and continued to pretend that everything was normal.
they were jerked out of this fantasy when séamus turned eleven, and a woman showed up on their doorstep to explain that séamus was a wizard. his parents had hundreds of questions, but séamus was just shocked that someone as unassuming as him could be so…different. after the logistical matters were settled, séamus went to hogwarts. he didn’t know much about the school, and was thus surprised when the first thing he had to do was put on a mangy old hat, which had just sang him a song. the hat told him that he belonged in one of two houses, hufflepuff or slytherin. even with the warning that slytherins could be unkind to muggleborns, that was the house that séamus chose. he wanted to make a difference, and it seemed like slytherin was the best place to do that.
as he grew up, séamus found that magic wasn’t all that he had expected. there was more theory behind it than he anticipated, and shay found it both frustrating and annoying that he wasn’t allowed just to do magic – after all, he could learn the theory while he was doing it. classes like herbology, where he was allowed to do more than write, quickly became séamus’s favorites. while he battled some bullies over his blood status, séamus’s quietness caused him to fly under the radar for the most part, and his school experience was average, neither particularly eventful nor particularly boring.
until his fifth year came. muggleborns were being murdered, and séamus was scared. people like him were being murdered, and no one seemed to know how to stop it. while shay knew that he probably could have found a way to help, he decided instead to withdraw and make himself even more invisible. he didn’t tell his parents what was happening for fear that they would take him out of school, but they found out anyways. there was a flurry of argumentative owls after the april kidnappings that eventually allowed séamus to stay, but he was told on no uncertain terms that his parents wouldn’t hesitate to pull him from school if the behavior persisted through his sixth year. séamus was grateful for the triwizard tournament and the distraction it provided – his parents were so relieved that he couldn’t enter that they almost forgot about their previous threat. it doesn’t seem necessary, though, since things have quieted down this school year. shay knows it’s a naïve hope, but he hopes that things stay quiet, so he can stay at hogwarts, where he belongs.
