Viola was standing on the edge of the ballroom, swigging a class of champagne surrogate as they watched the Champions dance with their partners. Sadly, none of them had tripped yet, so Viola had no reason to find Brandon in the crowd and smirk knowingly at him. Viola was pretty sure that more than one professor was judging them for how quickly they were gulping their champagne, but whatever. They had intentionally gotten the non-alcoholic kind on offer for the younger students, because no one wanted to be drinking alcohol around Viola's date. All Flamethrower needed to do was snap her fingers and poof, you burn easily because of your high alcohol content. The thought made Viola shudder, and they set their drink down. That image wasn't conducive to drinking anything, that was for sure. Viola settled their hands on their hips, wondering where Maria was. Probably standing in some corner glaring holes into the back of the head of whatever girl Elias was dancing with. Viola didn't recognize Elias's date, which was probably a good thing. Wherever Maria was, she'd find Viola eventually, and they'd dance until one of them got bored or found another partner. Simple.

Maria hadn't been the most fantastic date, if she was being honest. She'd practically abandoned Viola when she spotted Elias and Margaux dancing and had moved to get a better look. It was almost cute. Margaux in all her confidence and poise, and Elias so shy but managing to lead the French girl through the dance. IT was times like these she wished she had a camera to take a picture. There was a blonde girl wandering around with one and for a moment she was tempted to take it. But she'd rather not spoil the night so early. So, as the first dance started to come to a close, Maria weaved through the crowd of students and staff, making her way to the spot she'd last seen Viola.
Maria took a moment to look the other Durmstrang student up and down. She just loved how adorable Viola looked in that dress. Viola had always had a very unique look that Maria found appealing. That and she kind of liked how Viola was so resistant to and of Maria's hard advances. After that moment's pause, Maria moved once more, approaching Viola from behind and slipping her arms through Viola's and around their waist. Maria wasn't one for personal space. "You look amazing." The girl purred quietly as she tightened her arms a bit and brought herself right up against Viola's back.

There were few people that were comfortable violating Viola’s personal space in any way, shape, or form, so it didn’t take them long to figure out where Maria was when they felt heat at their back. Viola wasn’t sure whether Maria actually ran warm or if they just subconsciously projected the extra heat onto the girl because of her affinity for fire, but in any case, Maria was warm, especially when they were flush against each other. “Really? Because I didn’t really try at all.” Viola said casually, not even bothering to turn to see Maria so that they could return the compliment. They’d see her eventually, and one of the things they had learned about Maria was that seeming too interested was a sure way to cause her to lose interest. Being around Maria was a good way to remind Viola to be as much of a frigid bitch as possible. The time at Hogwarts was making that a little harder, but they found it easy to return to their roots when Maria was around. Frigid bitch worked well when you were with a girl on fire. “So, tell me, are we going to stand like this the entire night or will I convince you to dance?”

Maria wasn't deterred by Viola's answer, so casual that it had almost sounded like Viola wasn't even interested in any sort of contact with Maria. Thankfully, Maria wasn't deterred, and she also knew that Viola wasn't nearly as uninterested as they sounded. Because if Viola wasn't interested? They'd leave. Viola wouldn't put up with Maria. The challenge of such a callous target was one of the things that attract Maria the most to Viola. So, she pouted just a little, even though Viola wasn't looking. "Aw, you didn't? Not even for me?" She tried to sound put out, but it sounded more like a soft tease. The pout gave way to a grin. "Well, you always look amazing, so I suppose that's alright." She added.
Viola still didn't so much as look as Maria. Typical. That was okay. Maria would get her to look eventually. Maria knew she looked good tonight. She'd been laying the Veela charm on thick, done her hair in soft curls and the black and white dress she wore showcased all her curves in the right places. She'd already turned more than a few heads, and the night had only begun. "Hm.... I don't know. I do like our current position." Maria started, her words like silk as she traced a circle with her fingers on the fabric at Viola's waist. Finally though she took a step back, letting her hands slide away from Viola and breaking the physical contact. "But I could never refuse a dance with you." She flirted.

Viola chuckled internally when Maria asked if they didn’t even dress up for her. “Well, if I dressed up for you, then I’d have to dress up for every pretty girl.” Viola said with a small smirk. “And then I’d always be dressing up.” Hogwarts had plenty of pretty girls, even if only a few of them were interested in ever getting to know Viola. It was a backhanded compliment – calling Maria pretty, but also implying that pretty people were a dime a dozen. What really attracted Viola to a girl was her personality. And while Maria would be a challenge, Viola wasn’t sure if they were up to taming a wild heart like Maria’s. It was easier not to have to wonder if they could do such a thing, especially because Viola wasn’t into being broken-hearted.
Viola was glad that Maria couldn’t see them roll their eyes at her comment about liking the position that they were in. The movements Maria was making with her fingers did feel nice, though, so Viola let themself relax a little. “Let’s dance, then.” Viola said, turning around so that they could look Maria in the face for the first time. “I’ll lead.” If there was a more apt metaphor for their relationship with Maria than a dance that Viola had to demand to lead, Viola was curious as to what it was.

Maria's arms tightened just a touch at Viola's backhanded compliment. Not because she was actually and truly insulted, but because that part of her that demanded she be noticed growled at the comment. Maria was a very vain individual, but there was also much more to her than just her Veela good looks. Her lips were still close to Viola's ear when she spoke, her voice low with suggestion. "I'm more than just a pretty face, Viola." Maria liked to secrets, so there was quite a bit about her that no one knew. More depth than people thought possible for someone that appeared so shallow.
Maria had already pulled away when Viola turned to look at her, and stated they would lead, making Maria blink in surprise. That was one of the traits that Maria found so fascinating about Viola. Maria was so used to being in control, to demand dominance and get it. But Viola wouldn't bend. Viola refused to give in. It was a strange and foreign concept, but drew Maria in like a moth to the flame. She might not like it in the long run, but for now the change in pace was refreshing. The way Viola had spoken made it clear that the topic wasn't open for debate. Maria could have argued it, of course, but she chose not to. She could give Viola a victory or two. "Alright." Well, Maria literally put up no fuss whatsoever. She took a step towards the dance floor, holding out a hand to Viola.

Viola didn’t want to be too quick to agree that Maria was more than a pretty face, but even they knew that it was the truth. “You’re right.” They said simply. “You’ve got the fire hands and the mysterious, probably tortured past, and the werewolf cousin all going for you.” None of that was a lie, but the tone with which Viola listed those things made it seem like even the more intriguing parts of Maria were just…well, average. And sure, the fire hands were cool and they were curious about Maria’s past, but at the end of the day, was it really worth the heartache that would come when Maria eventually decided that they weren’t enough for her? Maybe for the two of them, being the predator and the prey, the chaser and the chased, was as far as a relationship would ever okay. And that was okay. It was fun, actually. Viola just had to remind themself not to get attached.
Maria agreed to dance readily enough, not even protesting when Viola said that they were going to lead. They took Maria’s hand easily, the other resting gently on the part-Veela’s waist. “So, the girl Elias is with.” Viola began speaking at the same time they began dancing. “Do you know her?” That was an easy enough way to start.

Well, Viola was right about all those points, though she frowned at the troubled past comment. Obviously Viola knew very little about Maria's past, but considering how Maria acted when people mentioned her past it wasn't hard to figure out. That frown turned to a pout. "That's all I have going for me?" She sounded just as pouty and sulky as she looked. Again, she wasn't actually offended. Just dramatic.
That sulky look was replaced with a smile as Viola took her hand and placed the other at her waist. It almost looked like a child that had just gotten their way after throwing a tantrum. Maria moved just a little closer as they began to dance. "Hm? Oh you mean Margaux?" she answered. Thought slightly obsessed with both Margaux and Viola, she sounded content with Viola's attention for the moment. There was the lightest hint of jealousy though. Some might interpret it as jealousy of Margaux, but it was really Elias. He deserves to have an amazing night and Maria knew the other girl would deliver just that, but she couldn't help but envy her cousin. "I've met her a few times." More than a few. "She goes to Beauxbaton." that jealousy was still there, just under the surface.

Viola rolled their eyes when Maria pouted at them, obviously searching for something positive in the list of not-so-positive things Viola had ticked off about her. “The Veela blood, too.” They said with a shrug. It was one step short of calling Maria beautiful – which she was, of course – but Viola didn’t want to fan her ego, just get her to stop pouting long enough to have a little fun.
Margaux was apparently the name of the girl Elias was dancing with, so Viola nodded. “Sure, her.” They said casually. Since Maria wasn’t immediately beginning a rant, Viola assumed that she approved of Margaux. When Maria continued to say that she had met Margaux a few times, Viola raised their eyebrows. “Is met a euphemism for something else?” They asked, not beating around the push in their question. It wouldn’t have surprised them if Maria had taken Margaux for a test run before allowing her to go onto Elias. Maria seemed that kind of person, which Viola found strange, but oddly sweet, too.

Eh, Veela blood wasn't what she'd wanted to hear but at least it was in the right direction. It was like pulling teeth to get Viola to cooperate, but that was part of their charm. Viola just never made things easy, and Maria loved challenges.
Now on the dance floor, Maria felt much better, no surprise. Maria was getting attention, it wasn't like Viola could ignore her when they were dancing together after all. Enjoying herself, she almost missed Viola's next question, about met being a euphemism. "Hm?" Maria focused back on Viola's eyes, taking a moment to mull over the question. Technically no, technically yes. Oh, Maria could answer that question so many different ways. Finally Maria moved just a touch closer to Viola as they danced. "Are you really wanting to talk about her right now? I'd much rather focus on you tonight." She 'not really' answered. Evasive little mongrel like her, she just never liked giving a straight answer. But really, she'd rather not talk about Margaux while trying to woo Viola, it was a distraction.

Maria dodged the question with expert ease, and Viola just rolled her eyes at the answer. They were going to assume that that was a yes, and Maria just didn’t want to say it, which was strange, considering that Maria normally wasn’t bashful about her sexual conquests. She wasn’t always overt about them, either, though, so Viola didn’t want to jump to too many conclusions. Viola rolled their eyes again when Maria said that she’d rather focus on them. “Not much to focus on here, I’m afraid.” Viola had been half-hoping that their outfit had been enough to make people lose focus, but maybe that wasn’t the case. “Besides, Elias has always been your focus. Why should that stop on what may be the most important night of his life?” Viola asked, hoping to deflect Maria’s attention to something else. They had to admit they were more than a little worried that their focus would slip sometime during the night, and then they’d end up in a bed – or more likely, a broom closet – with Maria before the night was over.

Maria tilted her head at Viola's pessimistic comment. While a pessimistic herself more often than not, tonight wasn't one for the feeling. "I think there's plenty to focus on." The part Veela slowly answered as she tightened her grip just a touch on her dance partner. If only Viola would let her show them what she meant. Maria would be more than happy to prove Viola wrong, given a chance.
"All I'll say is that I know Margaux won't hurt him, and will ensure he enjoys himself tonight. I don't need to worry about him." Margaux knew about Maria's protectiveness of her cousin, and that having slept together wouldn't change how Maria retaliated if she thought Elias had been emotionally or physically hurt. "But can't I take a night off to ensure you have a good time too..? In whatever way you want..." she added softly as she leaned in to brush her lips against Viola's in a casual and brief kiss. If Viola was interested Maria would do just about anything to make some sort of progress. The kiss was just a hint of that, and she broke it quickly, not wanting to push Viola too much. Maria pulled back to that same distance they'd been at while dancing and met Viola's gaze as she waited for some sort of answer.

Maria tilted her head, and without skipping a beat, Viola tilted their head, too, so that they could still look Maria in the eyes. They didn’t know whether it was some sort of perverse show of dominance on their part or just instinct, but they did it. Someone had told them once that mirroring someone in a conversation showed that you were interested, and no matter what Viola claimed, they knew that they were, indeed, interested in Maria, in a variety of ways. The part-Veela was holding onto them slightly tighter, and Viola’s fingers flexed against Maria’s for a moment. They were determined to meet her blow for blow.
Viola wasn’t sure how Maria knew that Margaux wouldn’t hurt Elias, but they didn’t want to know. Even they knew that sometimes ignorance was bliss. Maria then said that she could take the night off from Elias, and ensure that Viola had a good time, too… Say no. But the Veela charm was hard to resist indeed, and Viola found themself scrambling for something, anything to grab hold on so they wouldn’t end up in Maria’s clutches. Normally they were better at distracting themself and resisting the Veela charm, but it was hard. Maria’s lips on theirs surprised Viola, and they found themself giving up the fight. Was it really so bad to kiss Maria, just one? When Maria pulled back, Viola instantly leaned forward again, fitting their lips against the part-Veela’s once again.

Maria was not expected that. If anything she had expected Viola to push away, to chastise Maria for her forwardness and told her not to do that again. Viola had never let Maria make an advance that Viola didn't first initial. Well, it must be Maria's lucky night then. Not only did Viola not push her away, but Viola kissed Maria back, moving their lips against hers. It was.... well, kissing Viola had definitely been worth the wait and the chase.
The kiss was so sweet in fact that it'd been part of the reason she'd pulled away, not wanting to risk pushing to far and having it end on a sour note. But she'd wanted Viola to know how she felt. Maria was always so dominate, refusing to bend to anyone's will. But for Viola? For Viola she'd try. For just a moment of Viola's attention, Maria would do anything. A little dramatic, but that was Maria for you.
She'd been surprised before by Viola returning the kiss, but that surprise heightened when Viola almost greedily leaned back in to kiss her. No chastising. No lecture. No indifferent look, or attempt to move away. A forceful kiss, very fitting of Viola's personality. Maria wouldn't let this opportunity pass her by. She immediately pressed hard into the kiss, moving her lips against Viola's to return the intimate gesture. They'd stopped dancing, but Maria didn't care. Instead her arms just tightened just a little around Viola.

Viola didn’t often stumble into situations that they didn’t know anything about. In fact, not a single occasion where they had gone into a situation without preparation beforehand came to mind. Part of that was their personality, since they saw so much not to be prepared for a lot of situations, but part of that was that Viola didn’t really do much, period. Viola liked to think of themself as a comet, if you wanted a celestial metaphor. They flew around, bright and distracting, but transient. But Viola got pulled into orbits, sometimes, by people who were bigger and bolder than them. Viola had thought they had avoided being pulled into Maria’s orbit, but if there was anything these last few minutes had proven, it was that they were wrong about that. They were definitely being pulled in by Maria’s gravity, and at a certain point, it didn’t make much sense to resist that. It was inevitable, and resisting the inevitable only ended in pain. Eventually, Viola might escape Maria’s orbit. But eventually was not now.
Kissing Maria was an experience. Viola had never kissed a fire, but they imagined it would be a little like this. They weren’t sure what came over them, but all of a sudden, realization rushed back to Viola. They were kissing in the middle of the dance floor, without even dancing. “I can tell you’ve had a lot of practice.” Viola finally managed to quip. They weren’t sure whether or not the haze was clearing and the pull of the Veela charm was receding, but they felt a little bit more like themself with the comment snapping off of their lips.
