Now that was a question. Why would she want to hurt someone? Maria didn't answer immediately, just stared into his eyes intensely as she mulled it over. Trying to decide what to say, if anything. If she should laugh it off like no big deal, if she should shrug and refuse to give an adequate answer, if she should make something absurd up, or if she should actually answer truthfully. She was still trying to decide when she started speaking, much to her shock. "Because I'm tired of letting people hurt me." That was a little to honest for her own good, and admitting it made her uncomfortable. So she looked away, breaking the eye contact.
She didn't look back until he told her she didn't deserve to know his name. Her eyebrow raised, and a smirk tugged at the corner of her lips. "Are you sure? Like I said, I'll make something up otherwise."

@maria <3 Her response to his question was, well, somewhat of a good reason. But, at the same time it wasn't. It sounded like a pun, but fighting fire with fire wouldn't do anything, it just made it all worse. And Maria obviously didn't know this, or didn't care to know it. Maybe it was her the difference in age between the two of them, the things they had been through, but Samuel couldn't just let her think this was okay. "You need to not think that everyone in this world is going to hurt you. If you think that way, you won't ever be happy."
Samuel's own eyebrow went up at as Maria's expression became very amused. He wasn't sure what exactly she was so happy about, but he also didn't really care. "I said what I said, didn't I?" He didn't care what she made up, he'd probably never see this girl again after today. She was a student, a student who had a lot to learn about life and other people, including herself. "There's your croissant." The server set it down in front of Maria and Samuel took that time to finish his bagel.

Maria raised an eyebrow as he spoke, saying she'd never be happy if she thought everyone would hurt her. Yeah? Well, excluding a few individuals the world was doing a bang up job convincing her of that. "And if you think the world is a happy place and no one will ever hurt you, you won't last long." She quietly respond, that intense stare back. She wasn't to keen on thinking of the best of people. When had that ever done her much good? Without even realizing it she'd dropped her guard enough to let this stranger see underneath her shallow exterior. Let him see the girl that didn't dare trust anyone, who'd been burned enough times to lose complete faith in everyone. While he wouldn't know what happened to her, he could see what her hard past had left.
The look didn't last long. Her croissant being brought out brought all her defenses back up like a gate, shut tight. She nodded to the server. "Thanks." That was to the stranger sitting across from her. It was short and.... sincere. She meant it.

@maria <3 Wow. This girl was something else; he'd never met a person so down about life. It made him curious if her entire family was like that and if she had grown up that way. Samuel always tried to see the best of every situation and if a person couldn't do that, he felt very badly for them. "You're quite the pessimistic person, Maria. That's not too great of a quality." Right behind lying. Although Samuel was sure she'd been this way for a long time, that was the type of vibe she gave off.
He wasn't exactly sure if the thank you was to him or the server, so Samuel just nodded. It wouldn't be fun to embarrass himself, assuming she was thanking him when she might not have been. His bagel was gone, as was his coffee, so he ordered another. "You really do need to learn to control your hands."

Pessimist, realist, whatever you wanted to call it. Maria just didn't delude herself into getting her hopes up that much. She chose not to respond, just shrugging and looking away. What did it matter if someone didn't like her personality? She'd never cared much for what people thought about her after all. She wasn't going to start caring now just because some stranger pointed out that they were bad.
Maria took a bite of her croissant, enjoying the silence for a moment as the stranger went about ordering another coffee. She'd just swallowed when he mentioned her hands again. She set the croissant back down on the plate and folded her arms against the table. "I think you mean the fire. I have very good control of my hands." It'd be hard to ignore the strong undertone there. But Maria wasn't flirting with him. Not yet, anyway. It'd just been a natural reaction. Leaning back, she shrugged again. "I think it's pretty obvious that conjuring fire with just a thought and no spell or wand isn't exactly the most common ability around. I don't know anyone else that can do it, do you?" She sounded a little snippy there, but it was true. How did you learn to control something when there was no one around to help you, or walk you through it? She'd done plenty fine teaching herself how to control this on her own though. It wasn't her fault people were idiots.

@maria <3 She obviously didn't find it important enough to respond to him, so he scoffed quietly to himself and shook his head. This girl was like speaking to a wall. Completely delusional that how she was acting was okay and had no issues. Samuel knew someday she'd be proven wrong, but when that day was, was the question. He couldn't do anything for her, it seemed. Except possibly make her more mad than she already was.
"No, however with enough research I'm sure you'd be able to find someone or something. Giving up would be your first mistake." Samuel usually never brought up any type of religious topics with people, especially those he had just met unless they had said something first. So most of his wise advice wouldn't help her at the moment. "Someday you'll really hurt someone, someone you love, and you'll never forgive yourself for it."

Maria made a disgusted face. While she knew he wasn't saying she had given up, it certainly sounded like it. "Like hell I've given up." She snapped, unable to stop herself. She had more control over the fire than when she was a child. Leaps and bounds. It just.. wasn't perfect. Sure, she could try to find one of her Veela relatives, but she wasn't interested in that. In trying to build a relationship with family that, in her mind, wasn't interested in her. Of course it was certainly possible they didn't even know about her existence but that possibility was so far eluding Maria. She'd done just figuring it out on her own before now. Why did she need someone now?
That look disappeared, and her eyes narrowed. Was he honestly saying she'd hurt someone important to her? Well, news flash stranger, there was only one such person. Only one person she honestly cared about. That she'd do anything for. "I'd never hurt him." She spoke, her voice low. No, never. Not Elias. He was the one who kept her grounded. She wouldn't hurt him.

@maria <3 Her facial expression brought a chuckle out of Samuel. What a face! How even old was this girl? She couldn't be much older than sixteen or seventeen, that's for sure. Her tone of voice even told Samuel that she might not know how to properly express herself without giving attitude or offending someone else. Hm, she was definitely a firecracker. One that Samuel didn't want to delve himself too much into. "From what I've seen, you've given up. You just allow this power of yours to overcome you and hurt others. That doesn't seem like trying to me."
Suddenly her entire demeanor changed, and Samuel's eyes narrowed slightly. Well, he definitely caught a string there. "Maybe that's how you can control it..." His voice was quiet, more like he was talking to himself. This boy, who Samuel was assuming was her cousin that was Durmstrang Champion, was the one she must be talking about. Maybe he'd be her reason to control her power, and learn how to use it only when necessary.

Maria scowled at that chuckle. For some reason she had this nagging feeling that he wasn't taking her seriously at all. As he went on to chastise her like a child her eyes narrowed, staring him down with her usual intensity. It wasn't just her hands that were 'fiery'. Her personality as a whole was almost the embodiment of the element. Explosive, consuming, wild. "I am my power. It's just as much a part of me as everything else. Stop thinking it's like a pet that needs to be tamed, Santo." She let out the Portuguese word with a snap, as if it left a vile taste in her mouth.
He'd caught the hint but now he was muttering nonsense, and she rolled her eyes. "If your trying to tell me something speak clearly. I don't speak gibberish."

@maria <3 He wasn't taking her seriously. She was incredible, that was for sure. Incredibly amusing. She was...he didn't even know how to explain her. "How old are you exactly? The way you're speaking, I can't decide if you're twelve or fifteen." Samuel smirked. Maybe it was rude, but whatever she called him didn't sound like a compliment. "You don't speak gibberish, but you're too daft to call me whatever you said in English. It may be apart of you, but if you can't control it, it controls you."
"I said, maybe you're cousin friend is the way to teach you how to control it." Samuel spoke roughly. He wasn't going to snap at the girl or be rude to her anymore. He was too mature for that, and she was interesting him in this conversation but he wasn't sure why he was continuing it. It's not like he'd ever see Maria again.

Oh, that got under Maria's skin, being accused of being twelve or fifteen. Her hands might be the ones that caught on fire, but her eyes flashed with the same intensity of the flames, her anger obvious. Immediately her hands itched, but it was manageable. No worry of hands igniting... yet. "Why don't you try asking that question again nicely, and maybe I'll answer." Her age wasn't really something she considered a 'secret' so she usually didn't hesitate to give out the information but she didn't take kindly to being insulted.
Maria leaned back, as she crossed her right leg over her left and brushed her hair off her shoulders with a flick. "I speak several languages, excuse me for not limiting myself to just English." She answered sarcastically. Except.. Well, there was a dark tone underneath the sarcasm. Nothing controlled Maria, and it was almost like she was daring him to say it again. Obviously he was getting dangerously close to a 'sore' topic for her.
As he finally repeated himself she raised an eyebrow. Elias as a way to learn control? Sorry, news flash buddy, Elias had problems just like her but creating fire was not one of them. "See, it sounds like your speaking English, but you still aren't making much sense." she answered, hoping he had some point to all this.

@maria <3 Samuel couldn't help it, his jaw dropped, and he laughed out loud. This girl might be really convinced that he was afraid of her and her fire. Well, news flash, he definitely was not. Everything she did was funny to him, though it seemed to be making her even more mad. "Nicely? I did ask nicely. But sorry, I'll reword it for your heiness." He coughed, sitting up higher with an innocent smile. "How old are you, dear miss Maria?"
As she leaned back, he leaned forward, resting his chin on his hands, a large smile on his lips. She was definitely a teenager, whether she'd answer him or not. The flick of the hair told him that. Samuel's own hair fell over his shoulders, his eyebrow moving upwards. "Congratulations? I'm not sure what kind of answer you were hoping for."
"I'm making plenty of sense, you're just confused." Clearing his throat, he took a sip of his coffee and looked into her deep eyes. "What I meant was, he could help you train. Train to control it. Do whatever possible to make you angry. The more you hurt him, the more you'll try to stop and keep the fire contained." It was a decent idea, and would help, as long as this boy was up for it.

And he was laughing now. Maria couldn't decide if he was laughing at her, or he genuinely thought her answer had been funny. She was leaning towards the first option, which did little to improve her mood. His own sarcastic response (the smile did little to mask it), made her eyebrow raise. See, now she gave everyone attitude. But being given attitude? She didn't really like that much. "Hmmmmm. I don't think you deserve to know my age." She finally answered, using his own words against him. He wouldn't give her his name, why should she give him her age?
She shrugged at his next comment. She hadn't been looking for any specific answer. "You don't need to answer. Just stating a fact. Using other languages isn't 'daft'. And besides-" She paused momentarily to finally grin. "You get no say in whatever nicknames I give you, since you're the one refusing to give me your name." Maria tore off a small piece of her croissant and popped it into her mouth, silently contemplating his suggestion. Train with Elias? Risk hurting him? "No." She stated frankly. "I'm not putting him at risk." She'd never burned Elias, she planned on keeping that record. Usually he could calm her down, so she didn't hurt someone but there had been times when she'd been worried she might hurt him and intentionally stayed away for that reason.

@maria <3 Samuel rolled his eyes. Really? How childish could she get? What she said was true, but it was like she was playing a game with him. "Alright then, to each their own. But, I know you're in school. So, you are fairly young, also need some life lessons. Hopefully today was one for you." He finished off his second cup of coffee. This girl obviously had to get back to classes soon, so this conversation shouldn't take too much longer, right?
"I wasn't giving a say in the nickname, I was just 'stating' that I have no idea what it means so it's useless." Goodness, Maria definitely had an argumentative side that was for sure. It seemed like if there was any way she could be sarcastic and rude, she took it. "If you'd really like my name, all you've got to do is ask nicely." He grinned wickedly. "Why not? What if he wants to help? It's a great idea."

Maria looked very smug when he rolled his eyes, knowing that she was annoying him. As he started to response she started to shrug. Obviously she was still in school, considering the boy earlier. She would have lightly applauded him, just to try and irk him even more, but stopped when he said she was in need of life lessons. That smug look immediately disappeared and her expression hardened. "Don't talk to me about 'life lessons'. You know nothing about me." She hissed, her voice like venom with a dangerous look in her eyes. It was more than anger. It was raw, and wild... pain.
She was done with this conversation. He'd struck a serious nerve there, so she didn't even offer a response to what else he said. Slowly she uncrossed her legs and pushed her chair away from the table. She didn't bother finishing her croissant, just left it there as she stood up and looked down at the man with a look that would send chills down anyone's spine. "I rarely ask, and I'm not nice." the poisonous tone hadn't left her voice. With that she stepped away from the table and left the small cafe, refusing to look back at the man with dreadlocks..
(end. You can respond once more if you want )
