Susan had told him to find someone to dance with, and after asking her had failed miserably, Lysander had returned inside to see if he could find someone else to ask. The problem was that, surrounded by so many sounds and colors, Sander couldn't pick one out of the mess that he liked, let alone find the person that the color belonged to. He was hovering around the edge of the dance floor, looking for a familiar face so that he could fulfill his promise to Susan without embarrassing himself hilariously. So far, he was failing. Sander was still apprehensive about using the zoom feature on his eye, so he couldn't see anyone's face. It was all so confusing! Sander sighed, and retreated away from the edge of the dance floor. Maybe he'd get something to drink if he couldn't find someone soon.

Adeline had just finished her third dance with Royal; her brother was a good dancer, great even. But Addie could tell he was itching to get back to his boyfriend. "You go on back to Jonah," she told him, giving his hands a squeeze and smiled. She watched him walk off the dance floor and looked around, suddenly feeling very self-aware that she was a single in the middle of the dance floor of couples. She spun around, looking for the exit when she spotted something else; or rather someone else. Lysander Scamander. They'd had a good conversation a few weeks back about Greek mythology; she'd promised the next time he could talk all about Shakespeare. Well, no better time than the present. "Lysander!" she called, hurrying over to him. Just as she got close she stumbled on the hem of her dress and her hands flew out to the sides. "Woah," she said, trying to steady herself. @lysander

Sander had thought that it was hard to pick out any one sound or color above the din, but he was proven wrong when he heard his voice above all of the noise, teal jumping out at him, bright and vibrant even amongst the other colors. He moved his eye around as quickly as he possibly could, until it finally rested on Adeline, who was already making her way over to him. “Hi, Adeline!” He greeted enthusiastically. It seemed in her hurry to get over to him, Adeline had tripped over something, and it was without thinking that Sander lunged forward to keep her from toppling over to the ground. He smiled awkwardly at her for a moment before lifting her back up to standing. “I am glad to see you.” Sander told her with another smile. He would wait until Addie had recovered from her near fall to pop the question – that seemed safer than asking her to dance right away.

Adeline gasped as she fell forward, and was immensely relieved that Lysander had the sense to reach out and grab her; she was grateful she had not fallen on her face. Otherwise she’d possibly be a bloody mess with the stone floors being so hard. “Sorry, high heels and I are not great friends. Thankfully you were quick-thinking enough to catch me,” she said sheepishly as he helped her back to a standing position. “I am glad to see you too; I was wondering whether I’d see you here or not. You hadn’t mentioned last time how long your stay at the hospital would be.” She smiled and straightened out her silvery dress. “Well, I came over here for a reason; you promised to talk about Shakespeare the way I talked about Greek Mythology. We can either do this here, or out on the dance floor. Your choice,” she looked at him expectantly, waiting for his answer. Adeline wasn’t necessarily forward with people, but she was keen to have a Shakespearean discussion with someone so passionate about it.

Lysander smiled when Adeline thanked him for catching her. “I’m glad I don’t have to wear high heels.” He said, glancing at Adeline’s feet momentarily. They looked uncomfortable and dangerous, two things that Sander didn’t approve of. “And it wasn’t quick-thinking.” He argued. “Just instinct.” It was instinctual for him not to let people get hurt, so when he had seen that she was falling, he hadn’t thought at all, let alone quickly – he had just acted. “I asked if I could be released in time for Christmas.” Sander said when the subject of his hospital stay had come up. Ten days had been more than enough time for him to recover, especially since the second eye hadn’t taken hold. Addie said that she had come for a reason, to have him talk to her about Shakespeare, and Lysander beamed. “If it’s all the same to you, I promised one of my friends I’d find someone to dance with.” Sander said. Susan probably hadn’t been imagining Adeline when she had given him that task, but it was a dance, and he found her voice beautiful, so he wasn’t breaking any of Susan’s rules. Lysander extended his arm to Addie, hoping that she’d agree to let him lead her to the dance floor.

Adeline smiled. “Regardless of what it was, thank you,” she told him firmly. “Well I am happy to be that someone; I just had a practice round with my elder brother so I am ready for anything,” she declared, noticing that the curly haired girl Sander had entered with had gone off with her sisters friend. They looked rather cozy, but she had not remembered her fellow Ravenclaw dating anyone when she had left school. Not that it was any of her business.
She allowed Sander to lead her out onto the dance floor then turned to face him, placing a hand on his shoulder and taking his other hand. “I can’t promise I’m spectacular, but I know the basic waltz,” she admitted as they began to dance. She got in time with the music, not saying anything for a few moments until she got used to dancing with someone that was not her brother. “So tell me. Which of Shakespeares works do you find most fascinating and why?” she asked him, trying to suppress a small smile. If he was anything like Addie with Greek mythology, Lysander was about to go on a tangent.

Sander smiled when Addie thanked him for catching her, regardless of his intentions behind it. “I haven’t yet danced with anyone, so my apologies in advance if I step on your toes.” Adeline was going to be his first dance of the night, and in all likelihood his last and only. He wasn’t going to tell her that, though, because it placed an undue amount of stress on her shoulders to make the dance a good one. Lysander didn’t really care about dancing with Adeline, though. Her conversation was much more scintillating than any series of movements ever could be.
Lysander began to lead Addie in a careful waltz around the dance floor, his movements stiff but as precise as they could be to avoid stepping on her. Adeline asked which of Shakespeare’s works she preferred. Sander wasn’t as familiar with Shakespeare’s sonnets, so he was going to contain his answer to the plays only. “It depends on what kind of fascinating you mean.” Sander answered. “On a personal level, A Midsummer’s Night Dream is the most interesting to me. I want to see what in the character of Lysander made my mother name me after him. On an intellectual level, I much prefer Macbeth. I wish that I could understand why someone was willing to rip their life apart for a prophecy.” Maybe it was the fact that he wasn’t a Slytherin that made Lysander wonder about such a thing. He didn’t have ambition, or cunning – he just had intelligence, and he was fine in using that in whatever way he could, not just the ways that would most benefit him. He was fairly certain that Adeline’s brother was a Slytherin, though, so maybe she would be able to shed some light on their mindset, and why something as unimportant as a few unfounded words could change the course of a life forever.

Adeline had to admit, though Lysander had claimed that he was not the greatest dancer, he wasn't doing a bad job just now. Sure, a little stiff, but that always came with nerves. Besides, hadn't she tripped and almost fell on her face if Lysander hadn't come to her rescue? He was permitted to step on her foot once, she decided with a tiny smile. She listened as he talked about the different plays that he enjoyed of Shakespeare including a Midsummer Nights Dream and Macbeth. She had not read either before, so she was interested to learn more. "Tell me about Midsummer Nights Dream," she said, but then went quiet when he mentioned how Macbeth was about ripping ones life apart for a prophecy. She knew that Hogwarts had a lot of clairvoyants, some that prophecized future events. One girl, it was rumored, had even forseen the Kings Cross attack. "It's hard not to; always wondering if every act you do is leading you closer or further away to making the prophecy come to pass," she relented softly. She wondered if her dad had ever heard a prophecy about his death; he had gotten death threats, sure. But a real prophecy, Adeline had not been privy to it if he had.

Adeline asked him to tell her about Midsummer, and the Ravenclaw lit up like one of the Christmas trees in the hall. “It’s a rather complicated story, mostly because it involves a love quadrangle.” Sander said, deciding that the disclaimer was worth giving. He was going to give a rather truncated version of the story to keep them both from going insane trying to figure out the map of the characters. “Basically, the story begins with a father forcing his daughter, Hermia, to marry a man she doesn’t love, Demetrius. The man she does love is Lysander, for whom I’m named. Hermia also has a best friend, Helena, who is in love with Demetrius.” Sander really hoped that made sense. It did in his brain, but he had read the play so many times that he knew the relationships front and back already. “Hermia and Lysander decided to run away together, into a forest that’s inhabited with fairies. Helena tells Demetrius about it in hopes of currying his favor, but he ignores her and follows Hermia and Lysander into the forest. Helena then follows him.” Goodness, his description was already getting overly long, and he hadn’t even gotten to the good part yet! “While they’re in the forest, the king and queen of the fairies are having marital troubles, and there’s quite a bit of funny magic that goes on, including someone’s head being turned into a donkey’s and people falling in love with who they’re not supposed to.” That was an understatement if there ever was one. “But in the end, they all live happily ever after.” Lysander was hoping that the ‘happily ever after’ was the reason his mother had given him his name. She knew that life could be messy and magical sometimes, but she also knew that, in the end, he would make the right choice. At least that was what Sander hoped.

Adeline made a face at the idea of an arranged marriage; she knew a lot of pureblooded families still believed in the practice of arranging their childrens futures for them but she could not for the life of her understand why. Her fellow housemate Gaius Goyle for example was arranged engaged to Rosaria Flint, although that particular arrangement seemed to be working out just fine for the Ravenclaw. Most of the time though, at least from what Addie had seen, it didn’t work out very well in the end. “Oh, a Lysander, is that where your parents got your name?” she interjected enthusiastically. She had wondered where Sanders’ interesting moniker had originated from, and now it seemed that she had her answer. “Well at least that story has a happy ending; I know Romeo and Juliets’ ending was quite tragic,” she told him after he finished his story, laughing a little. “It sounds like an interesting read; there’s an adorable little bookshop in London by where the Ministry is, so I’ll see if they have a copy lying around when I go into work next,” she added.
The song ended and Adeline stopped; the next song was much faster and while Addie liked it, she wasn’t too sure of her dancing skills to take it on. She looked back at Sander. “Up for a faster pace or shall we find somewhere to sit down for a bit?” she asked him, not really minding either choice.

Lysander nodded when Adeline asked if Midsummer was where his parents had gotten his name from. “I assume as much, since the name isn’t popular anywhere else.” He didn’t know where else the name would come from if not there. Addie commented that at least the story had a happy ending, and Sander nodded enthusiastically. “I have to admit, I’d be rather disappointed if my parents had named me Romeo, or something else like that.” He didn’t think that anyone in their right mind would name their child Romeo, or Hamlet, or Macbeth, but there were plenty of people in the world who thought that his mother was out of her mind, so… “If you’d like, I also have a copy.” Sander offered. “You could borrow it sometime?” Of course, that copy had his notes scrawled in the margin, but it would be cheaper than buying a copy.
The musicians took up a quicker tune, and Sander balked for a moment. Addie asked whether he was up to the song or not, and the Ravenclaw shrugged. “I’m fine with whatever you want.” Sander responded. He enjoyed talking to Adeline, and he worried that a quicker pace might impede that, but he was certain that they would have fun dancing more quickly, too, even if it made it more likely that he’d do something foolish like trip over her feet, or his own. At least he would have fun being foolish, if that was what they chose.

Adeline laughed a little at his comment on being relieved to not be named Romeo. “I have heard of people with that moniker before; I think I’d prefer that over Tybalt for certain,” she said with a small shrug. “I wouldn’t mind the name Juliet, it is rather pretty,” she added as a slight afterthought. Ophelia, Desdemona and Cordelia were other character names that came to her mind, all not so bad. Perhaps Shakespeare preferred his female characters to his male ones, and therefore gave them better names. “I’d like to borrow your copy if you don’t mind, thanks!” she said enthusiastically, then blushed lightly. She knew he was waiting for her to make the final decision on the dance, but saw him balk. Relieved, she tugged on his arm so they could walk towards a table together. Addie sat down and crossed her legs, picking up the menu that lay on the clean, white plate. “How fascinating,” she mused as she looked around. Seeing people speak towards the piece of paper and the food appear a moment later, Adeline’s face lit up in delight. “Marvelous,” she said. “I didn’t realize how hungry I was until I sat down if I’m being honest,” Addie said sheepishly. “Do you mind if I get something?” she asked him, hoping she didn’t seem rude.

Sander smiled when Addie said that she’d rather have the name Romeo than Tybalt; that was certainly the truth. “Personally, I think if you’re going to name your children after Shakespeare characters, you should stick with the comedies instead of the tragedies.” There was less of a chance that your child would have poor self-esteem if they grew up and learned that the source of their name was killed, beaten, or otherwise misfortuned. When Addie said that she’d like to borrow his copy of the book, Sander nodded, making a mental note to send it as soon as possible. “I’d offer to run and get it now, but it’s a rather long trek.” And she probably didn’t want to be carrying around a book for the rest of the night, either. When Addie lead the two of them off the floor, Sander was relieved that they were able to find a table rather quickly; sometimes it seemed at events that the seating was more crowded than the dance floor. The menus and plates on the tables appeared to be magically enchanted so the food appeared immediately, which was, as Addie said, marvelous. “Oh, not at all. I might get something myself…” Sander mused. He had just eaten earlier, when he was with Susan, but he was a teenaged boy, and his stomach was never quite full. Nothing on the menu was jumping out at him, though, so he waited to see what Addie ordered so that he could copy her.

Adeline laughed and nodded in agreement with Lysanders’ assessment. “Very true, same with Greek mythology though, imagine being named something like Narcissus. It’d be a conversation starter for certain, but not in a good way.” Being named after the Greek mythology about the man who fell in love with his own reflection would certainly not bode well for the person in question. Addie gave another smile as Lysander told her he didn’t mind if she ate. It was good as Addie’s stomach had begun to rumble out there on the dance floor; she’d been rather nervous before getting to the Yule Ball that she was quite sure she had forgotten to eat lunch. She pulled the menu towards her and studied it carefully. There were plenty of options, but one in particular stood out to her. “Leg of lamb!” she said clearly; the last Yule Ball at Durmstrang her father had been in attendance and he had told them about the fun menu trick for ordering food. Almost instantaneously, the lamb appeared in front of her, including mint jelly and mashed potatoes on the side. “This looks amazing,” she said, suddenly ravenous. She waited though, out of manners and just being polite, for Lysander to make his order before she tucked into her own plate. “Oh! I didn’t even ask if you were vegetarian or vegan, I’m so sorry!” she exclaimed, suddenly realizing her faux pas. She knew people could get a bit touchy if you ate meat in front of them when they did not; she should have checked beforehand.

Sander smiled at Adeline when she said that being named after someone in Greek mythology would be just as difficult as being named after a Shakespearean character. “If I ever have a child, I will have a lot of names to avoid.” Sander mused. He didn’t see himself as a father anytime in the near future, though (due to his lack of partner in addition to…everything else), so it wasn’t really worth thinking about.
Adeline ordered a leg of lamb and then asked if Sander was a vegetarian or vegan. “I’m omnivorous, for now.” Sander had considered becoming a vegetarian, as he was sure every magizoologist did at one point or another, but then other things had come up – like the fact that in America over the summer he didn’t have the time for dietary restrictions. There were a few months he could have tried it, but then, with the blindness thing. “I have heard that switching to vegetarianism can be good for your health, though. Perhaps I should try it in the new year.” Make it a sort of New Year’s resolution. For now, though… “Leg of lamb.” Sander said, softly but firmly. A plate identical to Adeline’s appeared in front of him, and Sander too, began to eat. Lysander didn’t know what else he ought to say to Adeline, so he ate in silence instead.
