It was a Hogsmeade weekend, so naturally, Fred was in the village. He had forgotten what time he was going to meet with Elias, which was...not a good thing. Fred didn't know why he was so scatter-brained lately, but he suspected a lot of it had to do with taking extra shifts at the shop to help meet holiday demand. Even now that the holidays were over, Fred was still in serious sleep debt, but he could never find time to catch up. His days off were spent writing letters to Elias or writing and then scrapping letters to his other friends. And Fred couldn't take naps, contrary to the belief that many held that he could sleep through any class. Groggy and scatter-brained was not Fred's best look, but he was hoping that Elias would be able to see him, or (more likely) he'd be able to see Elias, since the other boy was so tall. In his searching in the crowd, though, Fred found himself stumbling, his feet twisting around each other until finally, he ended up sprawled out on the ground with a face full of mud. Wonderful.

Someone face planting into mud wasn't what Maria had expected to see today. She was on her way to some... cafe. Maria really didn't know the name but she was sure she'd recognize it considering Viola's description of it. 'Gag worthy'. No doubt she'd know it on sight. She was running early though so she was in absolutely no rush, which is what gave her this splendid opportunity to witness such a comical event. Disgusting but comical.
Maria stopped walking immediately, barely having avoided being sprayed by mud at the fall as she started to laugh. Poor guy. It took a few moments but she managed to stop laughing and instead just grinned at him. "I know a good cleaning spell, if you want." she found herself offering for no particular reason. Why not get at least one act of kindness in today?

It didn’t take long for Fred to scramble to his feet – he wanted to be in the mud as little as possible. A girl, who had stopped when he had fallen, offered a cleaning spell to him, and Fred shook his head. “You don’t want to know the kind of stuff I’ve had to clean off myself.” Fred said with a shudder. Any possible substance that could be splattered, shot out of a cannon, or otherwise conveyed to his robes had been on them at some point or another…perks of being George Weasley’s son, right? Fred pointed his wand at his robes and cleaned them off with a quick spell before turning back to the girl. She was pretty, in a Veela-ish way, but that was really the only thought about her that Fred had. “Thanks, though.” He said a little belatedly, sticking his hand out. “Fred Weasley.” He introduced himself. He was getting better at introducing himself to strangers as a byproduct of being a cashier, that was for sure.

The fallen fellow had managed to scramble to his feet rather quickly. He was just as quick to respond to her question and immediately both Maria's eyebrows rose. Part of her was curious what exactly he meant, but that vain part of her immediately decided she did. It want to know. Mud was bad enough. Thankfully he cleaned up the mess before addressing her again. And when he did.... it was an introduction and an offered hand. That wasn't normally a very exciting thing. But when he introduced himself by a name she recognized...
Fred Weasley.
The name couldn't possibly be that common. And the fact that they were in Hogsmeade... this has to be the Fred Weasley that Elias was interested in. Her head cocked slightly to the side and a charming smile graced her lips as she reached out to shake that offered hand. "Maria da Silva Povoa." she had no idea if he would know who she was, unaware of what Elias had told the fellow. "And I think you know my cousin. We should talk." While her expression and voice had been 'sweet' it was obvious that that last sentence hadn't been a question or a request.

The girl was smiling at him, which probably should have been a good thing…but Fred felt kind of like she was a cat and he was a canary. It was okay, though, because Fred was actually kind of used to people being creepy to him. Normally they weren’t younger than him, but there was a first time for everything! (Really, after working in customer service, was anything surprising? Fred was really beginning to doubt that anything ever would be again.) Fred searched his memory for any mentions of Maria. Elias. Elias had mentioned her…but in what context? Fred was trying to figure it out, when Maria said that she thought he knew her cousin. Oh. Everything was falling into place now, and when Maria said that they needed to talk, Fred wasn’t disinclined to agree with her. “Sure we should.” He agreed, trying to keep up his easy-going demeanor despite his discomfort. “Lead the way.”

Well, at least he hadn't look too startled by her demand, nor that confused when she mentioned her cousin knowing him but failing to state who her cousin was. Either he wasn't easily surprised or he knew who she meant. Because a moment later and he agreed to her demand they talk. Her charming smile turned into a wide grin at his words. Such a courteous and professional response he had. Handsome too, now that she was really paying attention. With striking eyes. Oh, those were great eyes. "There's a bench right over there." She offered, not really in the mood to go anywhere far, or into any of the cafes or shops.
Maria didn't wait to see if he'd follow as she turned and headed for the bench in question. At the bench Maria lounged, an arm over the back and turned to motion to the spot next to her with that same grin. "I assume you know who I mean by my cousin. Elias. He talked about you once, but he failed to mention you were so handsome." Of course Maria had to bring that point up. Elias had good taste in men,.

Maria suggested that the two of them could go sit on a bench, and Fred nodded. Maybe it was better that they didn’t go inside – plenty of witnesses this way, if things went wrong. Fred had never been threatened by a relative of a spouse before (mostly because he’d never had a spouse), but if Maria with Elias was anything like him with Roxy, there was going to be more than a few unpleasant scenarios discussed in the next few minutes. This was actually kind of exciting, because it meant that someone believed that his relationship with Elias was serious, or at least serious enough to warrant some threatening.
“Yes, I assumed it was Elias. Is there another cousin of yours I should be looking out for?” Fred asked with an arch of his eyebrows. He knew that Elias had siblings – the Greybacks – but he had already had his eyes on them for a while, for various reasons. “Elias never told me you were a Veela.” Fred countered. He wasn’t sure how he felt about his maybe-boyfriend’s cousin flirting with him. It was a really good thing he was gay, Fred thought, or he could get himself in some kind of trouble in this situation.

"Elias is my only cousin." That Maria knew about. She knew absolutely nothing about her mother's side of the family, including if her mother had siblings or not. But the way she stated that fact, the intensity and fierceness in her voice... It made her intentions clear. Elias was more than her cousin. He was her closest and best friend. He might have other people that were important to him, and she was having to learn to respect that, but when it came down to it he was the only one important to her. That might change some day, especially with her current involvement with Viola but Maria didn't think that far ahead.
Fred wasn't fooled, he recognized her Veela heritage. He knew she was more then a pretty face. Surprisingly he looked completely unaffected. Maria just smiled sweetly. "Should he have told you?" She answered, not bothering to deny it. "I wouldn't use it on you if that's what you're worried about." Elias would be extremely upset if she did try to seduce Fred and it'd be much worse than the sibling fiasco.

Maria definitely had a bite to her, Fred thought when she responded to his question about Elias being her only cousin. That was just fine by him – one stern talking to was going to be more than enough to set him straight, if the beginning of it was anything to go by.
When asked if Elias should have mentioned Maria’s Veela heritage, Fred didn’t skip a beat. “Elias tells me what he wants to tell me.” He said with a shrug. He didn’t mind that – it just made him wonder if Elias had any Veela heritage in him. “I don’t think you could use Veela charm on me if you tried.” He said with a laugh. “I’m gay as the day is long.” That felt strange to say, in such a public place, but nice, too. He was pretty sure that even if he was bisexual or something like that, Maria still would fail with the whole Veela thing, because being seduced by your sort-of lover’s cousin? That was just gross. “I have part-Veela cousins, too, so I guess that’s another thing I have in common with Elias.” Fred said with a grin.

Fred didn't respond to her comment about Elias being her only cousin. Probably a smart move. But it wasn't like it wouldn't come up again. After all, that fact was the reason she wanted to keep talking to him right now. Not yet though, she'd let him relax a little first.
"Sounds like we're in the same boat then. He only tells me what he wants too." Hence this meeting. While unplanned she wasn't going to let the chance of learning more about Fred pass her by, because heaven knew Elias wouldn't tell her anything of his own free will. As he went on to explain that her charm wouldn't work on him an eyebrow raised, then the other as he stated clearly that he was gay. "Oh, I could use it on you, it just wouldn't work." She grinned widely as she brushed her hair off her shoulders. "No wonder you spotted it to quickly then."
"So, since Elias is my only cousin. I think it's fair to warn you that I can be over protective of him. I want him to be happy, and I really don't like it when he isn't." She explained as she gazed down at her nails, unconcerned. She wasn't threatening him, not yet. But the meaning behind her words was still there.

Fred nodded when Maria said they were in the same boat about Elias and the information they received from him. “I don’t really want to know everything about everyone.” Fred said, shrugging slightly. He wouldn’t mind knowing everything about Elias…except that that sounded really creepy and stalker-y, and Fred was trying not to be either of those things. “Eventually, I hope I’ll learn more.” Fred said, deciding that was safe to say. It didn’t sound pushy, did it? Meeting his sort-of boyfriend’s family was not supposed to be this stressful. But hey, meeting the cousin was a lot better than meeting the father. Fred shuddered slightly at that image – he didn’t think Fenrir Greyback was the kind of person who invited his son’s boyfriend over for family dinners. “Well, if it doesn’t work, it’s not very useful, is it?” Fred asked, somewhat rhetorically. As for spotting Veela heritage quickly, Fred shrugged. It wasn’t like that skill was important, except for in keeping his friends out of trouble…if he had any friends to hold back anymore.
“Got the message, loud and clear.” Fred said, giving Maria a mock salute. He didn’t intend to do anything to upset Elias, but the course of true love never did run smooth. (Ugh. Why did he listen when girls rambled about Shakespeare and love?) He didn’t think that Maria would be paying him a visit anytime soon.

"Really? I like knowing everything about everyone. Especially when they want to be close to my cousin." Maria smiled widely and sweetly as she spoke. Maria was over protective after all. Of course she wanted to know exactly who she was dealing with and who was trying to enter her cousin's life. Because she'd never let him get hurt. Not on her watch. "So, Fred Weasley. Is there anything I should know about you?" She asked with a smirk.
At the salute, Maria laughed. It didn't offend her at all. "Great! At least I don't need to get creative with my threats then. Because believe me, I can be. I inherited more then just my mother's good looks and charms after all. I have a particular knack for figurative and physical burns." She offered with a sweet smile. There'd really be no misinterpretation of her intentions now.

Maria said that she wanted to know everything about everyone, and Fred sighed. “You have a pretty big brain, then.” He said. She must’ve, if she could remember that much information about everyone on the planet. When Maria asked if there was anything she ought to know about him, Fred cracked a grin. “Well, I’m a Gemini, and I enjoy long walks on the beach at sunset.” He joked. He didn’t really want to tell Maria the stuff that she ought to know about him – that he was named after his dead uncle, that his family was large enough that they could fill three Quidditch teams easily, that he liked to joke around and hated it when people told him how much he was like another one of his relatives. That was all stuff he intended on saving for the people close to him, and Maria wasn’t that. She didn’t get a free pass to his head just because she was Elias’s cousin.
“Guess it’s a good thing I’m fireproof.” Fred said without missing a beat. It wasn’t true, but he’d like it to be, and the first step to making anything happen was believing it, right?

"That, or I simply don't like surprises." Maria answered simply. The more she knew about a person, the less likely they were to do something she didn't like without her expecting it. Except Viola. Viola had a shocking aptitude for always surprising Maria. Usually in a good way though. This Fred fellow... Well, anyone that could play along with her so smoothly deserved a chance. He wasn't missing a single beat, almost taking the whole situation completely light hearted. His joking retort only made her laugh. "Rather hard pressed to find long walk worthy beaches around here, isn't it?" She answered in the same fashion. Europe had it's beaches, but Scottland wasn't exactly known for them.
"Oh you are? Have you ever tested that theory?" Maria grinned widely. "Alas, I don't think Elias would approve of my... assisting you with that theory unless provoked." Hell, he wouldn't approve of it even if she was. He'd never been a fan of her burning people. But honestly, he made it sound like she did it every day! "Anyway, I should probably be going. You don't need to tell Elias about our little exchange. It'd only worry him." And get her into trouble with him. But it wasn't like this meeting had been planned! It was simply a coincidence! Who knew if Elias would believe that though...

Fred shrugged when Maria said that she didn’t like surprises. In his line of work, surprises were imperative – you couldn’t prank someone without them being at least a little bit surprised, and if he was going to dish, he had to receive, as well. Fred was a little surprised that he was able to make Maria laugh, but he was going to take it as a victory – at least it meant that she wasn’t spending every moment thinking about how she could throttle him. Unless she could do that while laughing, which would be a little bit disturbing. “Oh, definitely.” He agreed. “But that’s what we have Apparition for.” If Maria hadn’t just expressed a distaste for the unknown, Fred would have Apparated so he was behind her. Antagonizing Elias’s cousin didn’t seem like a good way to make a good first impression, though.
“I haven’t. But if you want to try it out, go right ahead.” He said. Fred was pretty sure that Maria could smell fear, so jumping straight into putting his life on the line, while reckless, seemed better than backing off and letting her know she was scared of him. “I’m going to tell him.” Fred said firmly. “I don’t think he’d appreciate this being kept a secret.” And then they’d both be in trouble with Elias, which neither of them wanted.
