Dear @emilia , Only time I’ve been to Scotland was to be dragged along for family things. They’re not as fun as some people make them out to be. There are lots of old castles from what I’ve heard though. Probably trying to communicate things that are hard for me to put into words. Like I said a few letters ago, most of my photos are because I think something looks cool or interesting. There are definitely rolls of film I have lying around that are happier or darker than others though, and they can be traced back to how I was feeling at the time.

Well, I grew up in Scotland, and I can assure that it’s a lot more than old castles. I suppose most of the places I’d want to take you wouldn’t be tourist spots, just places from my childhood that I like. Either way, they would be Muggle.
That makes sense. So many of our emotions are hard to capture in words. I guess that’s part of the reason I’m a writer, too – there’s so many things to say and I figure maybe, if I write enough, I’ll find a good way to say all of the things I don’t know how to, even if it’s by accident. I think it would be interesting to track a year in your life by taking a photo every day. cordelia regan smith

Dear @emilia , That’s good. I love castles, but the novelty of seeing them has kind of worn off after living in one for the last six years… I’ve done long term projects before, but nothing of that scale. That’s a good idea. Would you say it should be however I’m feeling that day, and trying to capture it that way?

I can see how a castle would become less interesting in that respect. If you ever are interested in Scotland’s plethora of greasy spoons and drive-ins, you know who to call. Hmm – maybe that can be my next project. A Wizard’s Guide to Muggle Scotland.
It’s ambitious, but I think you could do that. I do think that trying to capture a mood in a photograph would be a good idea, but I also think it would be easy to use clichés if you did that, like taking a picture of a rainy window if you were sad. If you think you could do that, though, it would be interesting – and maybe you could write something to go along with it, so when you look back on it you know why you photographed the thing you did? cordelia regan smith

Dear @emilia , Dad would definitely read that. Only to complain how none of that is true about Scotland. I don’t think he’s ever been to a muggle drive-in in his life, but that’s beside the point. I’m sure with a little convincing he’d learn how to drive and take me around to see muggle things. Or I could just do it myself. The only problem I see – and it’s not about the concept – is that I can only shoot on film here. That means I only have so many shots per roll of film, and they can’t be removed to easily hold this project on specific ones (this is a problem I’ve run into with long term projects in the past). What I normally do is designate a roll or two per project, but since this is every day it would be costly. That or I would lose any number of day’s photos somewhere in the hundreds of rolls of film that I have.

Your father sounds like an interesting person. And what does he know about Muggle Scotland!? It would be easy to Apparate to places, honestly – most of them aren’t very crowded so you could Apparate a few hundred feet away and just walk there. People might give you weird looks, but weirder things have happened. I’ll keep that idea in the back of my head for if I’m ever out of fiction ideas, I suppose.
Forgive my lack of photography knowledge, but how easy is it to put in or remove a roll of film from a camera? If you planned out a shot that you liked to describe your mood that day, could you put in the project’s roll of film, take the picture, and then switch back to a different roll for the rest of the photos you take that day, or is that prohibitively difficult? I suppose you're more concerned about taking a picture and realizing after it's perfect, too... cordelia regan smith

Dear @emilia , Interesting is one way to put it. Dispassionate about anything that doesn’t directly relate to his job is another. I always forget about Apparating because I’m still learning. Though that would make things immensely easier. It wouldn’t be possible with the kind of film I use. Once a roll is in, it has to be threaded across the viewfinder (which is where the film is exposed to light and the picture is formed). Once all the film is used, it has to be re-rolled through the camera and into the canister again. Taking it out and switching would either mean risking exposing the film, smudging it with my fingers (which could damage it), or double exposing a shot when trying to use the same roll a second time. Essentially it’s impossible with my camera.

That’s a shame. I find that the people I enjoy the most are the ones that can find passion in anything, even the things that they don’t necessarily like. Maybe you could wait until after school to go touring – take a gap year or something of the sort.
I only understand about half of what you said, but the important bits I gathered, and I guess that means my idea is impossible. I don’t suppose offering to pay for the film would be well-received? I mean, I love helping aspiring young artists, and you shouldn’t let cost prevent you from doing a project as big and as grand as you want. It wouldn’t eliminate all of your problems, but it would help a little, I hope. cordelia regan smith

Dear @emilia , It really is. Mum always says that the war affected him differently than most. Instead of finding things to care about, he’s just empty. Oh well. I’m sure someday he’ll show a side that we’ve never seen before. I might need time to work up the confidence before attempting to work at the hospital. Plus that would give me the time needed to decide between photography and healing. It’s not the cost as much as it is the feasibility of doing it on film. That gap year you mentioned would probably be when I attempted it. The other possibility is to get a second camera that is solely reserved for the project. I have another at home that my parents could send, if they ever figure out what it is I’m asking them for.

Your father’s a war hero? We didn’t learn as much about Voldemort in my school, because America, obviously, but…we learned. I’m sorry that it changed him for the worse. I hope that he does surprise you, and in a good way.
Maybe a gap year would be helpful in more ways than one, then. Remember, not every decision has to be an ‘or’; I’m both a model and an author, because I didn’t want to have to choose to be one or the other.
Getting another camera was an idea I toyed with suggesting, but since I do know so little about photography I figured I’d just wait to see if you thought of it – and you did! If you did it in your gap year, then you’d be able to go home during the summer to fetch the camera yourself, couldn’t you? Then there could be no miscommunication. cordelia regan smith

Dear @emilia , Uh…not exactly. I think it’s because he left instead of fighting. I don’t blame him for it, though I’m sure there are some that do. Not everyone is meant to fight for their lives. Though I do wish he had stood by those that he considered friends. That’s mostly a problem with how Hogwarts tries to lead us into jobs. One path, no deviation. Obviously they want us going into magical fields, so things like the arts aren’t really taught in school. Doesn’t surprise me that a lot try to run off and do the things they really want to. Magic isn’t always meant for everyone. Or just start this summer through my final year. One or two pictures a day would never interfere with studies. And the second camera would mean I could use the normal one whenever I wanted to.

…Oh. I can understand how that would change someone for the worse, though I do agree that some people just aren’t meant for that kind of thing. I am, so I know how easy it can be to judge someone for it…I will refrain from offering my opinion for that reason.
I can see that. It’s strange, because wizards still need non-magical jobs, or at least jobs that don’t use Charms or Transfiguration or whatever. It’s sad that you don’t get a well-rounded education. I think that people running away is kind of typical when they feel like they’re being boxed into something they don’t want to do.
That would be a fine idea, too, though you’d have to note the day you began so that you could make sure you did the full three hundred sixty five. cordelia regan smith

Dear @emilia , It’s fine. What others think of him doesn’t really change my outlook on who he was then or now. I think a lot of people want to forget all of that ever happened, but it’s hard with constant reminders all the time these days… At least photography can be done with or without magic. I kind of like it because of that reason. That would easily be my most impressive project to date. I have a lot of time before I start it to work out all the potential kinks. P.S. When is your book signing in Hogsmeade again?

I think kids always have a little bit of the ‘my parents are heroes’ thing in them, even after they’ve realized that their parents are just flawed humans like the rest of us. It does seem like there are a lot of reminders lately…If you ever have to make that choice, I hope you make it because it’s what you want, not because you feel like you have to redeem yourself. I know we haven’t been talking for long, but I would respect you no matter the choice you made.
That does sound good. Writing is the same way, though it’s honestly the publishing bit that changes more than the writing itself depending on which world you’re in.
I’m sure it’ll be very impressive, indeed!
The book signing is going to be the third weekend in February. I hope you can make it! cordelia regan smith

Dear @emilia , I’m not really the type to stick around and fight if it came to that. I don’t think anyone expects me too either, at least not like they did with dad. Publishing seems easy though. I have like, five copies of the same charms book now because they decide to make an “updated” version every year and we’re required to have it. Talk about a waste of money. Ahhh! That’s so close now. I have a lot of other questions to ask, but I think I’ll save them for then. I’ll write them down for you in case I can’t vocalize them. That’ll probably happen.
