@imogen January 2018 - year three School was so boring. Why did the crusty old professors always have to assign work that required them to go to the library? It was like they actually believed she could read. Technically she could, but pretending she couldn’t was kind of fun. It drove them nuts. Unfortunately today had come with an ultimatum; she actually had to do work because mum and dad were notified about her grades. Being stuck in the library was essentially detention, but where she actually had to find a book and do her homework. Mina was no stranger to detention of course, so this was kind of refreshing. Particularly because she could do things to the other students when they weren’t looking and totally get away with it. Currently she was laying underneath a table, waiting for her next victim to take a seat. She knew there was no way they could see her without actively looking underneath, so it was relatively fool proof. To protect herself from getting yelled at by a professor or the librarian, she had the book she was supposed to be reading, and was using it as a makeshift pillow. Older books were pretty good for that except that they smelled sometimes. This one had a rather musty odor to it and puffed up dust whenever she moved her head, causing her to cough every once in a while.
Waiting was the worst part of her little game. Somebody would have to sit there eventually. After what seemed like years, an unsuspecting pair of legs arrived and took a seat. Perfect. Mina gave the person some time to get situated and do whatever it was that people did in libraries. A few minutes later, she flipped around and went to work tying the two shoes together. Luckily she had a gentle touch, and managed to unlace both shoes and tie them to each other without a hitch. Flipping back to her original position with her head on the book, she leaned back to wait and watch. This was going to be a good one. Unfortunately she set her head down a little too hard and the book emitted the most ghastly smelling cloud of whatever right into her nostrils, causing her to simultaneously cough and gag. Mina immediately sat up and hit her head on the underside of the table, adding more pain to her already searing lungs and eyes. The coughing wasn’t stopping either as the cloud of dust swirled around the underside of the table. There was no way she was going to get away without the person noticing now.

Imogen was beginning to freak out. It was the beginning of her final semester at Hogwarts, which meant that in only a few months, she would be taking the exams that would determine the course of the rest of her life. Imogen knew that plenty of her classmates would think her strange for doing it, but she wanted to begin studying as soon as she possibly could – which was now. She had decided to spend the day in the library so she could begin chipping away at her review, and Imogen had seated herself at one of the library’s largest tables so she could spread out her materials as much as she wanted. Imogen didn’t know how long she had been studying when she heard a cough come from somewhere nearby. Imogen looked around, but, seeing no one else in the library, figured that she must have just been hearing things. However, when the table was jostled (causing a few books to fall onto the floor), Imogen put two and two together. She ducked in her chair to look under the table, but was immediately assaulted by a cloud of dust, which caused her to sneeze several times in rapid succession. When her sneezing fit was done, the dust had cleared enough that Imogen could recognize the figure under the table. “Mina!” She hissed, all too aware of the fact that they were still in the library. “What are you doing!?”

@imogen January 2018 - year three If she could have scrambled out from under the table before the person could poke their head under, she would have. The cloud of dust kept swirling around though as she managed to wedge it underneath her body. The unrelenting capability to produce more and more dust of it was horrid, and the coughing didn’t cease. Of course her kicking and bucking under the table was enough to garner the attention of the person sitting there and it wasn’t long before they too were looking under there to see what was going on. A torrid of sneezes came from the other person before a hiss of Mina’s name. She knew that voice. That meant she wouldn’t be in too much trouble. Taking that as her call to escape, Mina finally gained enough time to crawl out without coughing too loudly, sprawling herself across the floor next the chair the person was sitting at. “Hi Im.” She grinned, hacking once again as she inhaled more dust.
Pushing herself to her feet, she slowly moved across to the other side of the table and took a seat, pushing some of the stuff on the table out of the way so she could see Imogen directly. “I was reading. Duh. That’s what libraries and books are for right?” She propped her chin up with one arm, leaning a little across the table to try and get a glimpse of what her friend was doing. “The book I had was kind of dusty though…” Boring as well. Apparently the school only had the dull kinds of books. “So what’s this stuff?” Mina reached across the table and grabbed a couple pieces of paper, observing them one by one. None of it made any sense of course, but it would be fun to distract Imogen from whatever it was she was doing.

The younger girl was grinning at her, but Imogen was not smiling back at her. Mina’s reason for being in the library – to read – was obviously a made up one, or at the very least, a front. No one read underneath a table, and if the book had actually been used in the last century beyond just as a doorstop, it wouldn’t have created a cloud of dust large enough to choke two teenagers. Imogen wasn’t about to ask the question again, though, because there were more important things to be doing, like actually using the library for its intended purpose: studying. Imogen was about to start ignoring Mina so she could review her notes, but it seemed that the Slytherin had other ideas, like taking the pieces of parchment that Imogen had laid out by her left elbow. “Mina!” Imogen said, a little louder than was appropriate for the library, as she grabbed for the sheets of paper that the younger girl had stolen. “They’re my notes for my Charms N.E.W.T.!” She responded when asked what the pieces of paper were. “I’m trying to study!” Imogen said, growing increasingly more frantic the longer the notes were out of her possession. She didn’t want to make a scene, especially not a scene that would disrupt other students that were trying just as hard as she was to do their work, but she wanted to get those notes back. There were probably better ways to do that than just asking Mina, but Imogen couldn’t think of any of them at the moment, so her current strategy would have to suffice.

@imogen January 2018 - year three She could tell from the look Imogen was giving her that the little fib about reading wasn’t working. Technically she had planned on reading it…eventually. Clearly that was going to happen now, since it seemed to emit a rather preposterous amount of dust from its pages. If anything, she was going to be bringing it up to the librarian to have it cleaned so the next poor soul wouldn’t be subjected to the torture and suffering that she just had. That would be her one good deed for the year. Knock it off quick in the first month and then she wouldn’t be expected to do anything properly the rest of the year, just how she liked it. “Fine. I was thinking about reading it. That better?” She admitted rather stubbornly. That time she was telling the truth. Whether or not Im took it that way was a different story.
“Ha!” She let out loudly, when she realized that Im was right, and the papers were Charms. It had taken her a little bit to figure that out. Flipping over one of the sheets to see if there was anything on the back, Mina handing them over to Im one by one, making sure to get a good examination of each. “Yeah…none of that makes sense to me. Studying included.” She couldn’t even recall the last time she had actually studied. If reading books for class counted as that, then like, two weeks ago maybe. Today would have counted as well since the dusty book was supposed to be for class, but after that last encounter she was done with that. “I thought only Ravenclaws studied. Callie is obsessive about it.” Mina rolled her eyes as she handed the last paper back over to Imogen. “So what’s this charmed newt thing? Didn’t know there were magical lizards other than dragons.”

Mina corrected her story, saying that she was thinking about reading the book, and Imogen just smirked. That was probably closer to the truth, but she still couldn’t believe that Mina would even consider reading a book. For a Slytherin, the younger girl didn’t seem to have much ambition surrounding anything other than getting into trouble. “That’s the last time you’ll ever be able to use that excuse.” Imogen said drily, essentially giving Mina a free pass this time around while letting the other girl know that she still wasn’t buying what was being sold.
The fact that Imogen had been studying seemed amusing to Mina, but since she was getting her papers back, Im didn’t particularly care what Mina thought about her for it. The younger girl was looking at each of the papers before handing them back, which confused Imogen a little. “Of course it’s not going to make sense to you. You’re four years behind me.” Imogen said logically. “I know that you don’t like studying, but I want choices.” Im said with a shrug. She still wasn’t sure where she was going to go after school, and collecting as many N.E.W.T.s as possible was a part of making sure that, no matter where she decided she wanted to go, she’d be able to get there. “Hufflepuffs are hardworking.” Imogen reminded Mina. “Which means that if we want something, we use diligence to pursue it.” There were people who were plenty talented in things, but if they couldn’t put in the work, eventually those who would were going to surpass them. When Mina asked about charmed newts, Imogen nearly choked on her own spit. “N.E.W.T.s.” Imogen repeated slowly. “Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests.” The Hufflepuff said, explaining the acronym. “The highest level of test you can take?!” She continued, mild hysteria beginning to show. “How do you not know about them!?”

@imogen January 2018 - year three “Doesn’t mean I can’t try.” And she definitely would, if given the chance. “Might be a surprise to you, dear Imogen, but I was being honest this time. Really was going to read it eventually since it was for a class.” A class she honestly didn’t care about, but had been threatened with failure if she didn’t pick up the slack this term. While applying herself in class was half the battle, the other half was actually understanding the material, and unfortunately that was where she fell off. Putting forth her best effort didn’t help when she couldn’t actually figure out the course material to begin with. Spells were easy, of course, but the harder, more critical thinking classes like History of Magic and Potions absolutely baffled her.
Imogen had a point though, there was no way Mina would know any of this. In some alternate reality where she actually had a shred of intelligence, maybe, but that wasn’t who she was right now, and she quite liked the way she was. Imogen continued on about having choices and whatnot, none of which made any sense to Mina. “Are there really any jobs out there other than the Ministry or St. Mungo’s?” Her dad worked for the Ministry, so she really didn’t know much about anything other than that, and the hospital was pretty obvious as well. Too many days had been spent there when she was much younger, all so Koda and Sarah could get their Wolfsbane potions. She hated the smell and cleanliness of it, since everything was practically immaculate there. “I’m just going to run off after I graduate. Probably never come back.” That sounded like fun to her, not some boring desk job.
Mina tuned her friend out as she started talking about Hufflepuff qualities, instead opting to grab another sheet of paper from the pile in front of Imogen. Quickly scanning over it, Mina realized once again that she didn’t understand any of it. Bummer. “I don’t know about them,” she started, peeking over the top of the sheet of paper, “because I probably won’t be in any of them. No need to worry about something that’ll never happen, right?” At least she was being brutally honest. “Plus they don’t exactly sound fun. Why would I want to take something that I’ll never apply after graduating?” She passed the paper back over to Imogen. “Who knows, ask me again in my seventh year and maybe I’ll have changed my mind. Doubt it, but you never know.”

Mina said that despite Imogen stating this was the last time she could use the excuse, she was going to try it again – at least, that was what was implied. For all that Mina was saying about being honest about reading the book eventually, Imogen still didn’t believe her. “Since when did a book being needed for class make it a must-read for you?” Imogen asked. She knew of other students who skated by without reading the assigned portions of the textbook, using others’ notes and in-class lectures to learn enough, but not too much. Imogen didn’t mean to imply that Mina was one of those students, but it certainly supported Imogen’s dubiousness, even with the added information that the book in question was a class text.
When the younger girl asked whether or not there were jobs out there that weren’t in the Ministry or at St. Mungo’s, Imogen was quick to answer. “There’s Hogwarts. Quidditch Leagues. Small businesses.” Those didn’t make as many jobs as either the Ministry or Mungo’s, but they were jobs nonetheless. Of the three, Imogen was most interested in working in a small business as a consultant or creator of some sort. When Mina said that she was going to run off after graduating, Imogen winced, and turned to face her friend head-on. “You’d have to come back.” She said quietly. Then, to cover up that moment of vulnerability (which Imogen was rather afraid Mina would tease her for), the Hufflepuff added, “You’d need money. I don’t think your parents will fund you gallivanting around the world forever.” The Wulfes had too many children to do that; if they gave Mina money to run away, then there was sure to be a fuss from all the other siblings about how they didn’t get the same chance or something of the sort.
Imogen didn’t even try to take the sheet of parchment back from Mina again. She’d get it back eventually…probably. “I think you’re smarter than you’re giving yourself credit for, Mina. I think you’ll do wonderfully in N.E.W.T.s.” That was, if she bothered to try. Besides, even if Mina didn’t do well, everyone had to take a few N.E.W.T.s – that was what sixth and seventh year were for. If you didn’t do that, you’d have to repeat a year, Imogen was fairly certain. “I’ll send you an owl in your seventh year about it, then.” It was still strange for Imogen to think that she wouldn’t be in Hogwarts any more after this year, but it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing to say goodbye to.

@imogen January 2018 - year three “It’s necessary because I’ll be held back a year if I don’t read it.” She finally blurted out to her friend. She had been keeping that between herself and her parents, the warning having come right before the start of the new term. Technically she didn’t have to read the book, but it was one of the ones listed that would help her pass the class. And unfortunately for her that wasn’t the only book or class that she needed to step up her game in. Apparently Hogwarts was lenient with students until third year and then they finally started to crack down after that. It wasn’t her fault that she couldn’t pay attention in class or understand how to do the work. It simply didn’t click with her. So here she was, embarrassed that she had finally been forced to confess her inability to learn in front of Imogen, who, for all intent and purposes, was most likely one of the smartest people she knew in the school, and who more than likely should have been housed in Ravenclaw. But not everyone could be Imogen or Callisto, and Mina was on the list that restricted her from even thinking of getting close to them in terms of aptitude and intelligence.
That was also the reason she was already thinking of running off after graduation, assuming she managed to do that in a timely fashion. As of right now, it didn’t seem like her prospects were all that great. “Sure, yeah, there are lots of jobs out there. But nobody would want someone like me, and honestly, I don’t want to work for anyone either.” She took a deep breath, realizing that she was getting even more flustered now that she admitted her flaws with learning. “I’ll find a way. Just you see.” Mina handed back the most recent sheet of paper she had taken from Imogen, and decided to lay her head down on the table. It was frustrating being in this position, especially because it felt like she was being punished for something she had no way to correct. “Thanks Im, but I don’t think I am. I goof off because doing school work is too hard for me.” Letting out a frustrated groan, Mina lifted her head back up from the table and leaned back in her chair, rocking it back and forth on its back legs. This was extremely infuriating.

Imogen fell silent when Mina said that she’d have to repeat a year if she didn’t step up her game in her classes. Im had known that Mina wasn’t the best student, but if she was honest, she was just…shocked. “Mina, I…” Imogen began. Then she realized that she didn’t have an ending to that sentence. Im pushed her chair back from the desk a little so that she could get a better look at her friend, and licked her lips before she spoke. “If you want me to, I can help.” The Hufflepuff said. She had never tried tutoring anyone before, but if Mina needed help, and Imogen could give it, it felt wrong not to try. Im wasn’t even sure if Mina would accept her offer, or if the Slytherin would be too stubborn or too prideful to admit that she needed it, or wanted it. Hogwarts was important to any young witch or wizard, especially in a family like Mina’s, that didn’t really have ties to the Muggle world. Mina couldn’t do what Im had considered doing many a time when school had gotten too hard – she couldn’t just duck out and go on to have a Muggle education.
Imogen frowned when Mina said that no one would ever want someone like her. “If I ran a company, I would hire you.” She said. It wasn’t much consolation, since Im didn’t have any plans of the sort, but it sounded a lot less strange than ‘I would want somebody like you’, so Imogen rolled with it. When Mina asserted that she’d find a way, Imogen nodded. “I believe you will.” She said confidently. Even if Mina wasn’t brilliantly book smart, she was still intelligent, at least by Im’s standards, which was why the news of Mina possibly being held back was such a shock to the Hufflepuff. “Nothing’s too hard if you try.” Imogen winced. She sounded like a motivational kitten poster, and she hated that, especially since it wasn’t what Mina needed to hear. “Let’s go for a walk.” Im said, closing her books and beginning to stack the parchment so she could store it away.

@imogen January 2018 - year three Mina thought about Imogen’s offer in silence. She really needed all the help she could get, and the professors weren’t exactly keen on giving it to her. They had exhausted themselves the last three years trying to get her to pay attention and do the course work, and now it was too late. As far as she was concerned, they would probably be perfectly content with watching her name disappear from the class roster over the next few years, flunking out and turning into just a nameless worker somewhere. That’s what terrified her the most. None of this is what she wanted, only really concerned about having fun and doing things with her friends. Her parents were disappointed in her, her siblings were kind of disappointed in her (it depended on which ones were asked), and the school was most definitely disappointed in her. Imogen was the only one that hadn’t been like that, at least not yet. “You would?” She asked, unsure if her friend was saying that she’d help just because that was the right thing to say in this situation, or if she actually meant it. It was hard to discern between those two things lately.
“Thanks for the positivity, Im.” Mina smiled weakly. “Everyone always thinks these things don’t affect me, but they do. I’m just better at hiding it than everyone else.” And because of that, nobody ever asked how she was holding on. They just assumed that because she wasn’t doing work that she was either actively ignoring it or didn’t care. While that was somewhat true, the fact that she had trouble understanding it also remained true. “Yeah, a walk would be good…” Mina stood up and started to turn away from the table they were at as Imogen finished packing her things up. Stepping away, she remembered that the one book still needed to be read. Reaching back towards it, a sudden realization popped into her head: she had tied Imogen’s shoelaces together while she was still under the table. That wasn’t going to go over well if she stood up. Carefully moving around the table, Mina stood right in front of Imogen. “Before you stand up, I need to tell you something.” She wasn’t sure how to break the news of the prank, but the last thing she wanted was her friend to fall over, especially after everything that was just said. That would be like a slap to the face. The only reason she had tied the shoes in the first place was because she didn’t think she’d be found, nor that it would be Imogen sitting at the chair.

Imogen was more than a little surprised that Mina actually considered her offer, but she was pleased by that, too. It meant that she had a chance of making a difference in Mina’s life, beyond just the difference that she was hopefully making by being friends with the younger girl. Mina had made a difference to Imogen, too, not that she was too keen on admitting that. Saying that she was desperate for friends after being outed to the school didn’t sound good, and it made it seem like Imogen had just scrambled to the nearest person. The younger Slytherin wasn’t Imogen’s likeliest pair, but she had needed someone who knew how to fun when she was constantly stuck in her own head. “Of course I would.” Imogen replied softly. “I care about you, you know that. I want to help you succeed.” They were drifting towards the territory of an uncomfortable feelings discussion, so Imogen left it out at that.
“I might not be the best Hufflepuff in the world,” Imogen said with a wry smile, “But occasionally I do know how to turn on the happy bubbly charming stuff.” She doubted that she was as bubbly as some of her compatriots, but in times of need, Imogen could summon happiness when others might have failed. “I know that they affect you, Mina.” Im added. She knew just as well as anyone that hiding parts of yourself was easy, as long as you didn’t expect to hide them forever. Mina was not admitting that she cared, so Imogen suspected that hiding how bothered she was forever hadn’t ever been on the younger girl’s agenda. “I just figure if you don’t want to show it then you don’t want me fussing over it, either.” Im added, to explain why she hadn’t approached her friend about other things that had bothered her before. Sometimes Imogen felt that, with the age difference between them, she was walking a fine line between Mina’s friend and her caretaker. She didn’t mind either of the roles, but juggling them seemed like a lot of work, especially because soon Im’s only contact with Mina would be through owls.
Mina agreed to a walk, and Imogen was just moving to get up when the younger girl said she had something to tell the elder. “I’m listening?” Imogen half-said, half-asked, curious as to what Mina had forgotten to mention earlier.

@imogen January 2018 - year three It felt kind of good to have someone tell her that they cared about her. Her family did that a lot, of course, because that’s how they were, but lately it seemed like none of them were on her side. Probably because she had been stupid about not doing course work and put herself in this position in the first place and was being obstinate about getting herself back on track. Again, not her fault that she wasn’t as academically inclined as Callisto was, or even as socially active as Koda. She looked a little better when placed next to Sarah, but that was a discussion for a different day. Mina still had a few things to say about succeeding, seeing as Imogen seemed to think that she could actually do that. But now wasn’t the time to argue because she definitely wasn’t going to win that one. Instead, she nodded her head to show that she understood Im’s acknowledgements.
She snorted as Im said that she wasn’t the best Hufflepuff in the world. Damn straight she wasn’t. Dakoda was better. “I don’t really know how to scale Hufflepuffs, but you’re one of the better ones.” Mina shrugged, knowing that a statement like that was more ‘her’ than the previous ones were. That was her way of showing that she was fine. What was more important right now was the fact that Imogen’s shoes were still tied together from earlier, and in a moment it was going to be a nightmare to deal with if she decided to try and walk. Thankfully Mina had the upper hand and managed to get her to stand still for a few more seconds. “So earlier when I was under the table I uh…I kind of tied your shoelaces together…” Mina trailed off, averting her gaze so that she didn’t have to see the potential glare Im was about to give her. “I didn’t know it was you though. Thought it would be funny for whomever when they tried to stand up and leave.” And that was definitely a potential way to ruin a friendship with the only person on her side right now.

Mina admitted that she didn’t know how to scale Hufflepuffs, and Imogen gave the younger girl a wry smile. It was difficult to rank the badgers in particular, just because Hufflepuffs seemed to have a lot more variety personality-wise than the rest of the houses, which lead to a variety of different strengths. Grading them all on the same rubric wouldn’t have been fair. Imogen’s smile changed to a softer one, however, when Mina said that she was one of the better Hufflepuffs. “You’re definitely one of the better Slytherins, too.” Imogen assured her friend. For one thing, as far as Imogen knew, Mina didn’t have any plans to take over the world. And she was a tolerant person, not discriminating against people because of their age, gender, house, or blood status – if that was the case, then the two of them never would have been able to become friends.
Imogen was caught somewhere between laughing and being annoyed when Mina admitted that she had tied Imogen’s shoelaces together. She looked down at her shoes, and sure enough, if she had tried to stand at that moment, she would have toppled. The Hufflepuff made quick worth of unknotting what the Slytherin had knotted, and then putting the shoes back in their correct configuration, with a neat bow adorning each knot. “Thanks for telling me.” Imogen said, deciding that laughing was probably better than annoyance, and thus chuckling. Now that everything was back in working order, Imogen stood, slinging her bag over her shoulder. “So, where to now?” Im asked Mina. She had suggested the walk, but she wasn’t really sure where to walk to, or if there were places (or people) that Mina was looking to avoid.

@imogen January 2018 - year three Mina scoffed lightly at the idea of being one of the ‘better Slytherins’. Like hell she was. There were plenty of geniuses (and not complete psychopath ones, like some assumed), in the years above and below her. For the most part, pedigree aside, her house was full of extremely bright and intelligent people. They were more articulate and competitive than anything else, and their ability to synthesize certain situations and take advantage of what would benefit them is what made the current Slytherins different from Ravenclaw. The only reason she knew was because of her sister. Stating that she, Mina Wulfe, was one of the better ones meant nothing when compared to the rest of the house. She was a flunky and socially inept when it came to make friends her age. Instead she relied on her siblings to give her help with that. Sure, she was at every social gathering and school event causing chaos, or at least trying to, but that was all a show for attention. And nobody really paid heed to that anymore. Escalating that was the only way to get anyone to notice, and that certainly meant she wasn’t one of the better Slytherins, at least by her own definition. “If by better, you mean not stuck up, then I agree.” The current first years were definitely pretentious little brats.
She bit down on her lip as Imogen seemed to glance down at her shoes, finally seeing the damage of the earlier prank. Mina was ready to run if need me, the old dusty book clutched in her arms. She was pretty sure she could outrun Im if need be. The only problem was getting somewhere safe, which most certainly wouldn’t be the common room, because that meant Im would be going in the same direction as her. Mina let out a sigh of relief as she watched Imogen undo the laces and retie them, thanking the Slytherin for letting her know. That was good. That meant she hadn’t almost blown up one of her only real friendships. Things were touch and go right now with a lot of people, at least that’s what Mina felt. “Hmmm…” She tapped her dusty old book’s cover a few times with her fingers. “Great Hall? Kinda hungry after spilling out my deepest darkest secret like that.”
