Georgie wanted to talk to her brother. The only problem was, she wasn't sure if Lance wanted to talk to her. She knew she had been more than a little clingy towards him since they had come to Hogwarts together, but she wondered if the excessive distance she had given him since their father's death was any more preferable. She had invited him to Thanksgiving with her, of course, but other than that, Georgie had kind of...drifted. She hadn't even insisted that he spend her birthday with her. Georgie wanted to talk to her brother, but she wasn't sure what she could say. There was only so much of 'our dad dies, and that sucks' that siblings could go through without it being a little redundant. In the end, Georgie had decided not to go seeking Lance out, if only for the sake of preserving her whole 'distance makes the heart grow fonder' attitude towards him. Instead, Georgie was just hanging out in the Hufflepuff common room more than she usually did in hopes that her brother would find her there and start the conversation that she didn't know how to begin.

@georgiana Today had been a long day between classes and everything else that was going on. Things didn’t seem to be getting easier though, even though he had talked to a number of different people about what was going on. Wasn’t that supposed to help it? Make it all easier or something? Lance didn’t think so, at least it hadn’t yet. All it ever did was make him question everything more, the never ending downward spiral of what to do with his life. It was either suck it up and accept that things were going to be different with his mom back, or pretend like she still wasn’t there and continue on like he had the last few years. There was just one hitch: Georgie. He couldn’t leave her on her own, not after everything they had been through. The problem was that he was positive that she was on their mother’s side, not his. Of course they hadn’t really talked about any of it…but it was still there in his head that this was how things were.
Entering the common room, Lance quickly made his way through it, towards his dorm, only giving a small glance at the rest of the room. It was long enough that he spotted his sister sitting there. Stepping into his room, Lance tossed his bag onto his bed. Staring at it for a few seconds, he took a deep breath and turned back into the common room. He needed to talk to Georgie. They had pushed it off too long. Crossing over to where Georgie was, Lance sat down next to her. He had no idea where to start. “I’m sorry for being so distant. I just…” Just what? He wasn’t even sure of it himself. “I don’t know what to do anymore. It’s like every time something finally feels normal, another thing comes along and turns it upside down. I’m tired of that happening.”

Georgie had seen her brother enter the common room. It was kind of hard not to, given that his hair was blond and it kind of stuck out. He walked past her, though, and Georgie’s shoulders slumped a little. She had hoped – well, hope was stupid. Except when it wasn’t, because Lance returned to the common room and started talking. He didn’t waste any time in getting down to the heart of things, and Georgie had to take a moment that he was talking to her, and he was actually explaining how he felt instead of pretending like the entire problem didn’t exist. They were doing this, then – the whole conversation, and not dancing around things. “Do you ever think, that maybe it would have been better if they never came back at all?” Georgie blurted out. She knew that it wasn’t really what Lance had been talking about, and she definitely did want to address his concerns with lack of equilibrium, but the question had just tumbled out before she could do anything about it. “I think that that whole ‘it’s better to have loved and lost’ thing is total bull.” Georgie said, continuing on her trend of not very thought out slight non-sequiturs. “I get it, Lance. I get why you hate her.” The Hufflepuff said, finally bringing the conversation back around to Lance’s original complaint, albeit in a severely fragmented way. “I just…I don’t know. If they decided to come back and turn my life upside down, I’d rather have the good stuff with the bad, rather than all the bad stuff by itself.” Wow, that was an awkward way of putting things. Georgie had never fancied herself a particularly good orator, but now she was doubting her ability to speak at all, with the way everything had come out. She should have taken the time to think things out and organize them in a semi-coherent fashion, but a part of her still worried that Lance would walk away before she got to say everything she wanted to say.

@georgiana Of course he wished their parents had never come back. While it removed the mystery of them being alive or dead at least they wouldn’t be going through this right now. Lance would take that any day over their father actually being gone for good after just coming back. In a way, he knew this was all just a coping mechanism, hoping for the way it used to be because that had become normalized and he was fine with that. These feelings would become like that someday, but right now he couldn’t even think of it that way. He was still angry. “Yeah I do.” He almost instantly answered, not really caring how it sounded. That had been at the forefront of every thought for the last six months. For a moment there he had thought that maybe he could deal with having parents again; having a full family. Now that was impossible for any number of reasons, mainly because he simply didn’t want it to happen.
Lance listened as Georgie continued, not really sure where she was going with some of her stuff. He somewhat flinched when she said she understood why he hated Barbara. Did she though? Unless she was thinking the exact same thing he was, which he was almost positive she wasn’t, there was no way that she could tell what he really thought of their mother. Hate might have been too strong of a word for it, more like he strongly detested her. There were still things there, memories that he didn’t want to give up just because of how he felt now. Teenage tendencies aside, it was perfectly normal for a child to dislike their parents for one thing or another. For all he knew, this was just a stage that he’d eventually get over. Right now, he wasn’t really considering doing that though.
He took a deep breath in as Georgie stated that she’d rather have the good with the bad to avoid having just the bad. “So you’re saying you’d take dad dying to have her back?” There was no way to put that in the right context, yet it still slipped out. That’s what it sounded like she was trying to say at least.

Georgie didn’t even flinch when Lance insisted that he did hate their mother. She knew that, and him saying it…was he just trying to rub it in? Call her weak because she had let her mother back in when he hadn’t? Georgie honestly didn’t know the reason behind why he said what he said, but she had already known the content of the message, so it wasn’t that shocking. For some reason, Georgie felt like she was at war with her brother, which was shocking. They were supposed to be on the same side.
“No.” Georgie said. She would not choose one of her parents over the other like that. In the months since her parents’ coming to Britain, she had only spoken to her mother, but that was more due to time and circumstance than any real effort on her mother’s part. “I’m saying that if papa was going to die anyways, at least now we have mama back.” She sounded a little juvenile, especially since she insisted on calling her parents ‘mama’ and ‘papa’ like she had when she was little, but Georgie was hoping that that logic made more sense to Lance than whatever he thought she had been thinking. And if he didn’t…That was fine, Georgie supposed. She could handle a little more heartache – she had just been hoping that it wouldn’t have come from her brother. Right now, he and Louis were the only people who hadn’t let her down.

@georgiana None of that made sense to him. Wouldn’t it still have been better for them to never show back up again, and for the two of them to continue like they had the last few years, over knowing that one was truly dead? For whatever reason, Lance liked the mystery of their disappearance more now than he ever had before. He didn’t want to readily admit that somewhere deep down he was relieved to know that they weren’t dead or had simply abandoned them. That meant that he was doing all of this because he was mad that they hadn’t come back sooner. That was immature and unlike him. Lance hated being angry over all this, because the simple solution was to just cut himself off from their mother. It wasn’t because she was back, but the way she handled herself now that she was. He simply didn’t know how to articulate that into words that made sense.
“I understand.” Lance had difficulty accepting that line of thinking, but his sister did have a point, even if they thought differently about the whole returning thing. “I don’t even know what I want her to do. I get that it was too dangerous for them to stick around, and that when they finally came back we were gone. Guess I want a better explanation than that, even if there isn’t one. I don’t know.”

Lance said that he understood where she was coming from, and really, that was all that Georgie wanted. Even if he didn’t accept her choice, to be understood was good enough. She was trying to do the same, but it seemed Lance was having a harder time articulating himself, or at least articulating the reasons he was upset. Georgie probably would have run into the same problem herself, if she hadn’t been capable of disabling her brain-to-mouth filter for that minute or so where she just said everything that came to her mind. “I found out a long time ago that there is never going to be an explanation that’s good enough.” Georgie admitted. Even when her mother had insisted that staying would have put her and Lance in imminent danger, Georgie didn’t think that was a good enough reason. For every scenario that would make it necessary to run away, there was a reason to stay, or a reason to take the children with them, instead of leaving them behind. “And I guess, when they were gone…at least we could make up an explanation that made sense to us.” And yes, it had been comforting to think that maybe they had just died and they weren’t trying to leave them behind. “I guess anger and bitterness and doubt is the price of closure.”

@georgiana Georgie said there might never be a good enough explanation. That killed him. Simply accepting that this was how things were and how they had to be was too hard. That was practically like telling him to forget about it, because worrying about it all the time was pointless. Giving up like that wasn’t acceptable at this point though, even if there wasn’t a proper explanation for anything. For everything to make sense, there had to at least be something that wasn’t passive of the entire issue at hand. Unfortunately that seemed to be the only thing that Georgie could present him with, and at the moment, it was the only he had been given that was remotely close to what he was kind of looking for. Lance let out a deep sigh as he closed his eyes for a second. Maybe this wasn’t worth it at all; the negative emotions and hatred towards Barbara. She had certainly made it clear years ago that they weren’t worth her time, so why not do the same? Being completely neutral in all of it would probably be harder than what he had been feeling the last few months, but at least the pessimism would be gone. That’s what all of this was about, in the end. An answer, whether it was what he wanted to hear or not, was all he wanted before making the decision to accept or reject Barbara’s entrance into his life again. “Then what do I do? Forgiving and forgetting seems too lenient to me…” Then again, that would have been him a few months earlier. Holding onto grudges was not like him at all, and yet here he was.

Georgie wished she had the answer to Lance’s question. He had spent so much of the past five years taking care of her and answering her questions and making sure she was never confused or afraid, and now that she finally had the chance to repay the favor, Georgie didn’t have a clue of what she could say. But she was going to try to say something at least somewhat intelligent, because Lance deserved an effort. “Let it drive you.” She said after a long time. That was what she had always heard people say – you need to take your feelings and let them make you a better version of yourself. “Take the anger you feel at her, and be so good that she’ll regret that she ever left.” Of course their mother would regret her leaving already, but it was easier to regret it when your children were two fiercely loyal and intelligent, and overall wonderful people. That was what Lance was already, so maybe Georgie ought to be taking her own advice. “I’m sorry, Lance.” Georgie said after yet another long pause. “For making these last years harder on you. You shouldn’t have had to take care of me.” She didn’t know if her brother wanted an apology from her, but if it would help him get on better terms with their mother, Georgie figured it was worth the wounded pride that came from having to apologize for being herself.

@georgiana Let the anger drive him. That was…that actually made sense to him. He had been using the anger, just in the right way. It had been directed more at not wanting to deal with their mother at all, whereas Georgie was suggesting that he be like he had always been, just that this time it would be slightly passive aggressive. He didn’t want to be petty, because mending things was the ultimate end in it all, Lance simply didn’t want to be the one to acknowledge that Barbara was right in returning. She needed to truly realize what she had abandoned, and how that wasn’t okay. Obviously that was clear already, but Lance had a feeling that it hadn’t exactly sunk in how much it had affected him and Georgie, and how it was still affecting them. “I think I could do that…might be hard at first, but I understand what you mean.” It was definitely worth a shot. There really wasn’t a negative to him at all, and if it didn’t end up working then that simply meant there was nothing left between him and Barbara. At this point, Lance would gladly take either option.
There was a pause in the conversation, and then Georgie said something that he wasn’t expected, nor ever did for that matter; she was apologizing to him. He didn’t want that, because there was no reason for her to apologize for taking care of her. “You’re right, I shouldn’t have. But I wouldn’t trade anything for it, so don’t apologize. You’re my only family Georgie. Barbara-mom, has to work for that again.”

Georgie let out a soft breath of relief when Lance said that he thought he could use his anger to drive him forward. It probably wasn’t the best advice from an emotional health standpoint, but if Lance was going to be angry at their parents anyways, then it was better if something productive came out of it. And when Lance did get over it – Georgie prayed that he’d get over it, at least – then he’d have something other than an angsty diary to show for his years of torment. “The best things always are hard at first.” Georgie said quietly. Her parents coming back had been hard, but one of the best things that could have happened to her. And loving Louis…well, that was never hard. But that was an exception to the rule, if Georgie was honest.
When her brother said that he shouldn’t have had to take care of her, Georgie was bracing for an outpouring of pent up anger. But…it never came. He told her not to apologize, and Georgie looked at him, slightly slack-jawed. She had never entertained the idea that Lance wouldn’t choose another life. He wouldn’t trade this, trade her, for anything? She couldn’t even comprehend it. Georgie leaned forward and wrapped her arms around her brother. “I know that I don’t say this as much as I should, but I love you, Lance.” Georgie said quietly. He was more than just her older brother – he was her protector, her knight, her everything. He was her best friend, and she just wanted him to stop hurting because of their family woes.

@georgiana Lance swallowed as Georgie stated that the best things were harder at first. She could say that again. They had been through a lot of hard times, probably more than a lot of the other students at Hogwarts. He didn’t need to reiterate their life story to prove that. There were a lot of truths to her statement though, and he knew that. They wouldn’t be right here, right now, if it wasn’t for them being shipped off to England. Things had been pretty good for the last few years, and saying they hadn’t been at this point in time would mean he was lying to himself. This was just another step; another obstacle to climb over and better himself. It’d take work, Lance knew it wasn’t going to be easy. But life wasn’t easy in the first place, and he didn’t expect anything less from it.
It was hard not to smile at the look Georgie gave him as he finished explaining that she didn’t need to apologize to him. That was the least he could have done. Neither of them should have ever been put in the positions they were in now, but here they were. As she hugged him, Lance tried to reciprocate the sentiments, but found his throat catch. He wasn’t sure if Georgie realized how much he needed to hear that right now. Their mother had said it, numerous times actually, while they were around for the funeral, but it had fallen on deaf ears. “I love you too, Georgie,” his voice cracked. “You’ve helped me through a lot more than you can imagine.”

Georgie liked to pretend that she didn’t need people. It was easier, not to need people, and for the longest time, she had done an excellent job of shoving people away. But even when everyone else had been pushed away or left before she could to the pushing, Lance was there. Georgie wished that there were better ways for her to describe everything that she felt for him, but ‘I love you’ came close – or at least as close as she thought any words could. “And you’ve helped me through just as much.” Georgie answered. That was how it went – they leaned on each other, and held each other up even when they felt they couldn’t even stand themselves. She unwound her arms from around her brother, brushing away a stray tear. If only their mother could see them now. She’d probably start crying over how well they were bonding or something. Georgie smirked at the thought. “…Are we good?” She asked her brother. “Because I’m not sure how many more emotions I can handle today.” She was more than prepared to curl up in her bed and take a nice, long nap as soon as this conversation was over.

@georgiana Lance could feel that catch in his throat growing as Georgie said that he had helped her through just as much as she had with him. He knew that already, but it always meant more hearing it in person over assuming that was how things were. She let go of him and he could tell that she was wiping something away from her face. Maybe if his tear ducts hadn’t completely dried up a few months ago, he’d be the same way. Lance nodded his head as she asked if they were good. “Yeah, I don’t think I can take any more of this either,” he laughed awkwardly. Still, it was better to get this out then to keep holding it all in. Everything that Georgie had said earlier about using those emotions to drive him; they were definitely necessary at this point. Standing up from the couch, Lance stretched his back. He needed to think about all of this stuff some more, now that his head was clearer on all of it. “I’m gonna clear my head from all this so I can start new tomorrow,” he stated mostly to himself but loud enough so that his sister could still hear him. “Thanks again Georgie,” Lance added as he stepped back out of the common room to head on a walk. [THE END?]
