Addilyn hadn't been here in months. The last time she even dared wandered over here, was when her and Grey had been fighting. And while nothing dangerous had happened to her, she had had a nice, long conversation with a dog. Whether the dog was real, or someone she knew, Addilyn didn't know. But it had made her feel better, and in the back of her mind, she wondered if that same dog would still show up and repeat what had happened previously. But, that wasn't happening. She'd been sitting here for over an hour, no company, (which she was okay with), but her own self.
While she was at the of the forest, she sat down on a patch of frozen grass with her back up against a tree. She decided to dress a bit warmer than she had been, wearing fleece lined jeans, winter boots, and an actual black winter coat. Addilyn also decided taking care of herself might be a pro, which is why she showered and was actually getting some fresh air. Her sadness wasn't going to make her sick, that was for sure. Her hands, which were in gloves, were stuffed into her pocket, and her knees were pulled up to her chest as she watched many different groups of people walking around, laughing, and enjoying the last few weeks of Winter.

Claire had missed the events of the Yule Ball. The dedicated Auror had decided to work that night, so as many of her coworkers could take it off as needed. That and getting all dressed up for an extravagant dance didn't really sound that appealing. But that didn't mean she hadn't heard about it after. Or, at least heard that something had happened. Between her sister and some boy and her brother practically starting a fight. Honestly, what sort of behavior was that? Of course there was more to the story than she had been told so there must be some explanation.
Claire was patrolling the grounds, dressed in her midnight black Auror's uniform and matching black cloak when she spotted a familiar blonde head. In the forest. What was Addilyn doing..? No other flash of hair colors told Claire that her sister was alone. Of all the stupid things to do. Letting out a breath Claire changed directions and headed for her sister, who had stopped to take a seat under a tree. The frozen ground crunched as Claire approached her sister, not even attempting to mask her presence. "You shouldn't be out here alone, Addi." she softly commented once she was close enough. It's been a while since she had either of her siblings had had an opportunity to talk between just them. Ever since the end of October, when Claire had told them about Casey. A lot had happened since then..

A few more people walked by, and as she began turning her eyes to the left to see some more people, her eyes stopped at the sight of her sister standing in front of her. Addilyn took a deep breath, and then let it out slowly in a long, exasperated sigh. Not the person she was expecting. And how wonderful was it that she was currently in a terrible state; broken up with, crying 24/7, and practically broken.
Claire's comment made her sigh again and she shook her head, pulling her legs closer to her. "I'm fine, Claire." The snappish tone of her voice hadn't been intentional, but honestly, was it so hard for Claire to ever just ask her if she was okay? It wasn't like Addilyn to be out by the Forbidden Forest alone, her sister should know that. Especially in the freezing cold. This was completely opposite of Addilyn Slater. But maybe Claire didn't know that, with how distant she's been.

Claire didn't react at Addilyn's snappy response. Neither her body language or her expression changed. Claire didn't blame her sister for it, considering how... strained their relationship had been in recent months. No doubt Addilyn thought the worst of her oldest sister currently. Despite the slight hostility Claire moved closer and sat down on the spot next to her sister, back against the same tree. Claire didn't speak for a few moments, just stared straight ahead and contemplated what to do. Finally though the words came to her.
"You're fine alone, or you're fine in general? Because it sounds like I'm not the only bad liar in the family." Claire paused for a moment, still not looking at Addi yet. "Do you want to talk about it...?" Claire wasn't going to ask if Addi was okay. Because she knew Addi wasn't. Claire might not know what had happened at the dance exactly, but she knew that look in her sister's eyes. She'd seen it in her own eyes for months now.

She scoffed at her older sister and scooted a few inches away from her. "I'm fine alone and in general, Claire. And I am not lying." This was probably the most Addilyn had spoken in weeks. And she knew Claire probably didn't deserve this treatment, but Addi was just in a bad mood. Being blamed for cheating on Edmund when she didn't, not having any control over it as he was avoiding her all the time. Claire asked if she wanted to talk about it and Addilyn pulled her knees closer to her chest if that was even considered possible. She took a deep breath and shrugged. "There's a lot you don't know Claire. And if I'm honest, it won't make you happy it'll do the complete opposite. I'm not sure you're in the best of moods to get angry."

Addilyn inched away just a little. Claire just sighed quietly and remained where she was, not moving. It was sort of her fault. The way Claire had been treating her siblings.... Well, no wonder her siblings (especially Addi) weren't too welcoming to her presence. She just shook her head at her sister's sharp response, deciding it was best not to answer and possibly push the subject any more.
As Addilyn finally answered her question, acting as if Claire would be upset if she talked about what was going on, Claire turned her head to gaze sympathetically at her sister. "I'll admit I've been... short tempered lately. But that doesn't mean I don't know what it's like to have a lot going on and not knowing how to handle it or who you can talk to." Whatever it was though... Why was Addilyn sure Claire would get angry?

Addilyn stared at her older sister. Her only sister. The one who she trusted with everything and anything, yet lately they'd been so distant that Addi wasn't even sure how much they could be considered close anymore. Claire looked genuinely concerned about her, though Addilyn couldn't really tell if it was truthful or not. Claire had become very good at lying since the last time she's seen her, so who knows? "My boyfriend and I broke up...I think." Her voice was quiet as she looked away from Claire. "He thinks I cheated on him...and he won't talk to me."

Boyfriend?
Both of Claire's eyebrows rose immediately. Claire hadn't even known that Addilyn had been dating anyone. She knew for a fact neither Addi or Grey had mentioned the fact to her. Nor could she recall seeing or receiving any reports of Addi with anyone during her time at Hogwarts. If memory served her correctly, Addi spent most of her time with Edmund, didn't she? Will's little brother. But they were friends weren't they? As Addilyn continued though, explaining that they'd broken up because he thought she'd cheated on him... Well, Claire couldn't help but scoot closer to her sister. It didn't matter that Addi wouldn't look at her, she was still here for her little sister. Love, as Claire knew quite well, could be a cruel and terrible thing. It cut the deepest wounds. Killing someone on the job hadn't bothered Claire in the slightest, but losing the person she loved had destroyed her. "I'm sorry, Addilyn." She whispered, truly meaning it. Reaching out she placed a hand on her sister's shoulder. She wouldn't tell Addi that it would all work out and be fine. That she'd get over it. Of course, Claire hoped it would. But how could she tell her sister something that had yet to happen to her? How could she give her sister that advice when even she was still struggling with it?

She saw her sister scoot closer out of the corner of her eye. Immediately Addilyn had a vision flash through her mind, of two blond girls sitting on a park bench. Addi had only been five and of course wasn’t listening, being her joyful self and had gone running to catch a bird; her true love of animals was apparent. She had fallen, her knee becoming all bloody. Claire had come to her and sat her down, holding her and comforting her as much as she could. And for Claire to place her hand on Addilyn’s shoulder, the tears fell. She apologized, and Addilyn was gasping for breath. ”I-I don’t kn-know what t-to do.”

It was almost as if Claire's hand had melted the ice between them. Claire's only sister started to cry, the tears unrelenting as emotions burst out. Despite her sister's shockingly fast change in emotion Claire's remained as still was water, unwavering and steady. Becoming emotional herself wouldn't help Addilyn. In fact not much would. Broken hearts didn't mend through simple acts of kindness and comfort. They mended through time. Plenty of time. "It'll be okay, Addi. Even if it doesn't feel like it right now. Someday. Until then, it was okay to be emotional and confused and heartbroken.

Addilyn shook her head frantically. "No, it won't be okay." Her voice was gentle, and very close to being a whisper. She felt like lately all she had been doing was crying, and if she was being honest to herself, she was sick of it. Her head was always so heavy in pain and exhaustion, and she just wished to be laughing and happy again. Heartbreak was a terrible thing, and nothing she'd ever wish on anyone. Coming to a small realization, Addilyn blinked as she looked into her sister's identical blue eyes. Her fiance was killed. Edmund was still here. But Claire couldn't speak to him ever again. The younger blonde suddenly felt very guilty for even being upset, and she swallowed. "It's not that important."

Okay, that was a bit dramatic. Claire somehow managed to hold back the eye roll (how she didn't know, but she was glad she had.). Addilyn was still a teenager. She had plenty of life ahead of her. Not only that but Claire remembered from personal experience how fickle teenagers were. One minute in love the next not. It was an emotional teeter-totter. Eventually Addilyn would just totter back to the other side. It took just as much will power to not call out the drama too, but her she managed to bite her tongue.
Then, just like that it was like a switch had been flipped. Addilyn was staring into Claire's own eyes and saying none of this was important. Claire's own expression turned to mild surprise. "Why would you say that? Yes it is. It's important to you."

Claire looked surprised, and Addilyn just wanted to groan and leave. This wasn't what she needed. Her relationship with Claire had grown apart, and she desperately wanted it to grow back together. However with the way things had been going, it didn't seem like that was going to happen. Claire had drifted from Addilyn, and while it had left her hurt, she had also begun to drift. The only good thing that had come from it was that she was now closer to Grey; that had been her entire goal for years now. But as she stared into her sister's emotionless eyes, Addi shrugged. "Because."
Okay, maybe that wasn't the most mature thing to do. But she truly didn't know what to say. She couldn't tell Claire it wasn't important because her fiance was dead and Edmund was alive. Addilyn was who she was; she was the one people went to for advice and a smile, or even a joyful experience. For her to be sitting here, crying about her own life when her older and only sister was in much more pain than she just seemed wrong. "I'm fine, Claire...really. I may just be...hungry."

Because. Oh if there was one word that could hit a nerve that was it. It was a child's response when they couldn't come up with a good enough reason or when they wanted to just keep things to themselves and shut everyone else out. Claire wasn't a fan of it, at all. She was a very serious person so that sort of response just never sit well with her, and frustrated her to no end. Her eyes flashed with her immediate detest, and her teeth gritted for a moment, before she reigned in the emotion enough to soften her gaze and relax her jaw. She didn't respond though, instead taking a deep breath and releasing it through her nose, as if trying to decide how one responded to such a word and giving up.
"If you say so." Claire only managed to respond after Addilyn had spoken again, blaming it all on being hungry. "You should go eat then. Lunch is going now." she pushed herself to her feet. Taking a few steps away from the tree and straightening her uniform. "I should get back to work. I'll see you around." Claire's professional voice was back. Cold and crisp, as if all her emotions had just shut down. With a nod she turned away from her sister and walked back into the woods to continue her patrol of the school's perimeter.
(End)
