june 2023 Summer was here, which meant that Georgie was bored. There was always something new to explore at Hogwarts, but the orphanage had a much smaller campus - if you could even call it a campus - and the fact that they weren't allowed to leave very often killed Georgie. There were only so many trees you could climb and only so much trouble that you could get in when you were constrained to such a small area. Sure, Georgie could petition to leave the orphanage's grounds, or she could do the fun thing, and sneak away. For such an adventure, though, Georgie needed a partner in crime, so when she got up that morning, she walked through the halls of the orphanage calling her brother's name. "Lance. La-ance!" This wasn't atypical behavior for her, but she hoped that Lance was at least polite enough to show his face if he was going to turn her down.

@georgiana School was finally over. It had been one hell of a year and ended with quite the bang too. The freedom and comfort of escaping all of that and going back to the orphanage was welcomed at this point. If no-maj born students were getting picked off, how long would it be before they started targeting ones without families? While it was somewhat irrational to think he and Georgie would be safer at the orphanage than they were at Hogwarts, this was their other home, and it was hard to not to feel the comfort of it. He literally didn’t have to do anything all summer, and it was great. Right now, that consisted of taking a nice, mid-morning nap on one of the window ledges in an empty room. There were always a lot of those, since it seemed like most of the orphans, particularly the younger ones, were always adopted relatively fast. Lance thought that was a good thing, even if it meant that he and Georgie had to say goodbye a lot. That thought was quickly disturbed as he heard his name being called out. It didn’t take long for the echo to be recognizable as Georgie’s voice. “In here!” He yelled out, hoping that he could gain a few more seconds of shut-eye before she got there.

It wasn’t long before Georgie got a response to her slightly obnoxious calling out, and she grinned to herself when she heard Lance respond with ‘in here’. Normally she would need more detail than that, especially since his voice was a little echo-y in the mostly-empty orphanage, but Georgie happened to know that there was a particularly large windowsill in one of the nearby rooms that was ideal for sitting on. When she entered the room, Georgie found Lance on said windowsill, but sleeping instead of sitting. She rolled her eyes at him while he still couldn’t see her. Georgie flopped down on the ground next to Lance, peering up at him. “I’m bored.” She announced. Then, because that wasn’t an uncommon state for her in the summer and she needed to guide Lance into actually doing something with that information, Georgie added, “I think we should do something fun. And maybe a little dangerous.” It probably wouldn’t be a surprise to her brother that she wanted to do something ill-advised and reckless. That was who she was, especially when there weren’t any teachers there to threaten her with punishment. “Let’s sneak off.” She suggested, just in case Lance needed one last push to get off his windowsill and go out into the world.

@georgiana Georgie was quick to find where he was, despite not giving her any proper directions or calling out a second time. It wasn’t difficult to find someone in the orphanage unless they were trying to hide on purpose, in which case, then it became slightly harder. Lance had done that a few times over the years to escape Georgie for a few hours at a time. She wasn’t overbearing by any means, but he did need time to relax every now and then without any interruptions, atypically consisting of Georgie, and sometimes also Georgie. Today he didn’t mind though. They were finally done with school, and finals always drove any kind of interaction out the window. Clearly that was driving Georgie up the wall until they were finally back here.
She sat down on the floor next to where he was laying, and stated that she was bored. “Already? Only been back a few days.” Lance yawned, propping himself up to look down at his sister. He raised an eyebrow at her as she said she wanted to do something dangerous, like sneak away from the orphanage. It took him several seconds to process that. Sneak away? “To where?” He voiced his thoughts. London wasn’t exactly close nor far, so that would potentially strike out Diagon Alley. Unless she was thinking something non-magical. “I guess I’m game. Not really much to do right now other than sleep.” Swinging himself off the ledge, Lance headed towards the door. “Lead away.”

Georgie was surprised that her brother was surprised by her restlessness. She wasn’t exactly known for her ability to stay still and stay occupied. She always had to be doing something. “Of course already.” She sighed. “There’s nothing to do here!” Maybe Lance was better at not doing anything than Georgie was – he definitely seemed to have perfected taking cat naps in a way that Georgie was never going to be able to do. When he asked where they were going to go, Georgie raised her shoulders in an overexaggerated shrug. “What’s on your bucket list?” She decided to ask her brother. Maybe that would give her a better idea than just going to Diagon Alley to wander around. After all, if they were going to risk getting their wrists slapped – or worse – by the orphanage staff, they might as well do something more eventful than just walking.
Lance agreed to go with her even if they didn’t have a destination quite yet, citing the lack of other things to do as the reason. Georgi liked to hope that even if there had been other things to do, this adventure would have at least been something her brother considered doing. Then again, if there were other things to do, then Georgie probably wouldn’t have sought him out in the first place. Lance said to lead the way, and Georgie navigated the pair out of the orphanage, walking nonchalantly down the front path as if it was allowed and definitely not something illegal.

@georgiana He should have figured she’d get bored quickly. She definitely wasn’t wrong, there was absolutely nothing to do at the orphanage. They had been there long enough that the same old games and summer activities had gotten boring. That wasn’t exactly a bad thing since there were always old past times to look forward to. But he was starting to think that his sister didn’t exactly see that the same way he did. Two more years and he’d be able to get her out of there for at least one summer. All he needed to do was get a job and an apartment that could handle both of them. It wasn’t like they had a ton of personal belongings, so all they needed was two rooms and enough space to move around in. The ability for Georgie to come and go as she pleased would definitely sit well with her.
“Bucket list?” He repeated as he walked out into the hallway. There wasn’t really anything off the top of his head. At least not something that could really be done in one day, since that was probably all they were going to have before they were scooped up and brought back to the boring prison. The orphanage really needed to look into getting rid of those archaic rules for the ones that had been there for a much longer time. It took until they were off the orphanage property for him to finally speak up, deciding that there was one thing that he had always wanted to see. “I want to get a piercing. Don’t know why, just want to.”

When Lance repeated her words about a bucket list, Georgie nodded. “You know – the things you wanna do before you die. Kick the bucket, so to speak.” She said. She would have thought that Lance knew that already, but maybe he was just asking to make sure they were on the same page – or because he needed more time to think about what he was going to say. Putting the decision of what to do entirely on him probably wasn’t fair, but life wasn’t fair and all of that pizzazz, so Georgie didn’t feel particularly bothered by being a little unfair. While she was thinking about it, Georgie was going to start writing her own bucket list. Maybe if she felt like it she would write it down when they got back from their excursion.
Once they were off the orphanage’s property, Georgie relaxed a little. Now it would be harder to find them…Maybe. Lance said that he wanted to get a piercing, and Georgie nodded. “Where?” She asked curiously. There was the lip, the nose, the belly button. If he wanted to be boring, he could pierce an ear, but Georgie liked to believe that her brother wasn’t boring. “I kind of want to steal something.” Georgie said. She wasn’t sure what, but stealing something and not getting caught sounded kind of fun. Not in a kleptomaniac kind of way, but they were orphan kids on an adventure – stealing seemed to be kind of expected.

@georgiana Georgie’s question about where he wanted to get the piercing caught him off guard. He actually wasn’t sure where he wanted to get one. An ear piercing seemed pretty standard, but lots of people had those. And he wasn’t exactly fond of nose piercings, and almost positive neither was Hogwarts. Right now though, he didn’t really care what school thought though, or anyone else for that matter. Georgie’s spirit to escape had suddenly gotten into him as they stepped off of the orphanage property. There was no going back at this point. Well, there was, technically, but he was committed at this point. He had to hold by that desire to get a piercing now. “Haven’t really thought it through that much. That’s why it’s on my bucket list.” Lance pointed out. There were a few other things he could think of on that list that were more planned out than others, like returning home to the US, but those were for once he graduated and had money of his own.
Lance stopped as Georgie said she wanted to steal something. Where had she gotten the idea for that? “And what if you’re caught?” The simple answer was for them to magic their way out of it, or pull a lost foreign tourist shtick, in which the two could probably get some sympathy from. But Lance also wasn’t one to want to get arrested by no-maj police officers or warned by the Ministry for using magic out of school. England had been good to them when home hadn’t. “Just let me know when and where and I’ll distract people if you need me to.” He relented. Georgie was definitely getting her way with him today.

Georgie laughed when Lance said that he hadn’t really thought the piercing through much, and that was the reason it was featured on his bucket list. She had thought that bucket lists were supposed to be at least a little thought through, but then again, what was the point in it if you couldn’t be at least a little bit outrageous? “If you get your belly button pierced I’ll steal you ten Galleons.” Georgie offered her brother as an incentive. She’d never seen a boy with a belly button piercing, but there was a first time for everything, and that was a little easier to hide from the orphanage than any sort of facial piercing. If it wasn’t what Lance wanted, though, Georgie would still probably steal him something anyways. And they did have to pay for the piercing, so…
“I’m just a poor orphan who needs to buy some bread.” Georgie said, pulling a pouting face. “And I was afraid to ask because my parents were proud people, they would hate to see me reduced to asking for handouts, et cetera, et cetera.” Georgie wasn’t anticipating needing a cover story, but it was still fun to think of what crazy excuse she could think of. Georgie pointed to a man who was standing on the corner, peering at a gold pocket watch. He was practically begging to be stolen from. “Distract him and I’ll lift his purse. When I’m done I’ll put it on the ground and you can ask him if it’s his. He won’t notice if it’s a couple coins lighter that way.” Georgie said. She was a mastermind, she thought to herself as she sidled closer to the man.

@georgiana Get his belly button pierced? For some reason that seemed…weird. Lance was pretty sure that guys didn’t do that, at least not where they were from. Maybe England was different. “It’s not gonna be my belly button Georgie,” he stated, shaking his head. Ten Galleons was a promising price for it, but he was going to have to pass on the offer. For some reason he really wanted the piercing to be visible, yet not something as stereotypical as an ear piercing. That would garner some attention come school time but not be the kind to get people talking. Lance wasn’t opposed to a little talk about him. Usually it was about him and Georgie being Americans, or along that vein.
Lance laughed as his sister mimicked being a poor beggar orphan. He realized that they were technically two out of those three descriptors, but it wasn’t like they were starving on the streets like she made it to seem. And they most certainly didn’t have parents either. A lie was a lie though, and if Georgie could pull it off, then he was going to make sure he followed through with his side of the plan. She already had a man picked out as well, and Lance bit down on his lip, knowing that someone like that was definitely going to have a decent amount on him, but was probably not willing to give it up. “Maybe pretend like you mistook him for your dad? Run up and hug him from behind and go for it then.” That seemed better than trying to distract him with something else. “I’ll wait around the corner until you drop it.” Lance moved from his sister, and made his way close to the man, but far enough away that he probably looked like another passerby. If things worked out, he’d waltz back around the corner in time to see Georgie place down the wallet and he’d be able to return it.

Georgie sighed overdramatically and rolled her eyes when Lance said that he wasn’t going to pierce his belly button. She had never seen a guy with a belly button piercing before, and the idea that her brother could be the first was an alluring one. Of course, he was the one who had to live with it on his body for the rest of his life, so she wasn’t going to push him any more on the subject. It also meant that she didn’t have to steal another ten Galleons on top of however much she was going to take for the piercing, so that was a good thing. Their plan to get the money was beginning to shape up, and for a moment, Georgie felt a pang in her conscience. She shook it away. Georgie had thought that she was deceptive, but Lance took it one step further. Damn. They were two pretty crappy Hufflepuffs, if being a Hufflepuff meant that you had to be good. They were being loyal, though – not to the man, of course, but to each other. Really, that was the only allegiance that Georgie needed or wanted. Maybe the name Linley used to mean family, but now family went by the name of Lance, and if he wanted to get his whatever pierced, then she was going to make that happen. After nodding at her brother, Georgie ran up to their intended target. “Daddy!” She yelled, wrapping her arms around him from the back. The man, naturally, turned around, and Georgie took that time to grab his purse of coins. She took a fistful while he explained that he was not, in fact, her father, sticking out her lower lip and making her eyes water convincingly. When he finally sent her on her way (with a pat on her head, no less), Georgie stuck the coins she had taken into her pocket and let the pouch fall to the ground. Now the ball was in Lance’s court. lancelot ray linley

@georgiana As Lance turned the corner to prepare his bit, he couldn’t help but grin as he watched Georgie head off in the direction of the target, the man, that they had picked out to steal from. While he wasn’t a fan of committing a crime right out in the open like this, they didn’t have too much to spare between the two of them when it came to money. The amount that was stipend from their savings went towards school supplies and the trip to Diagon Alley right before the fall term. He had a little bit in his pocket already, but it was nowhere near what he believed a piercing would cost.
Leaning up against the corner of a building, Lance observed his sister as she ran up to the guy and called him her dad. There was something wrong with them if that didn’t cause a twang of heartache. But money was money, and they kinda needed it so Lance could get this silly piercing and check it off of his bucket list. There was some kind of exchange before the man patted Georgie on the head and turned to leave. At this point, Lance spotted her drop the money pouch on the ground. Now it was his turn. Passing by her as he hurriedly rushed over to pick it up for the man, Lance felt a smug smile cross his face. That was definitely unusual for him, but he couldn’t help but think that his sister was quite the actress. Maybe there was a future for her in that field.
“Excuse me!” Lance called out as the man was already walking off. If he didn’t hear him and kept going, then it was his loss and the rest of the money was theirs. Except that didn’t happen because Lance felt too bad about it. They had already robbed him of a decent amount of money and his time, they didn’t need to take anything else from him. Picking up the pouch from the ground, he rushed over, patting the man on the back of the shoulder. “I think you dropped this,” Lance panted out, seeing as he had to weave in and out of the small crowd that had formed as he tried to make his way towards the man. All he got was a simple thanks as the man observed it to check it was his and went on his way. Apparently only Georgie was going to get a smile today.
Shrugging, Lance returned to where his sister was stationed. He had to mentally prepare for this piercing he was going to get now. “How much did you manage to lift?” He asked her as he headed off in a random direction. If they kept walking, they’d eventually come across a parlor of sorts that did piercings.

Georgie was a little shell-shocked by this whole experience. She was a pickpocket now, a thief, and now that the deed had been done, she was finally letting herself feel a little guilt. It wasn’t enough to chase the guy down and give him his money back, but she was going to say a prayer for forgiveness that night or something. Not that she was religious – God had stopped being in the picture around the same time her parents had – but it would at least make her feel a little better. Lance returning the remainder of the money also made her feel better, since if he needed to buy something later, he wouldn’t be left totally without means. It seemed the man was a little less kind to her brother than he was to her, not doing any of the head-patting or smiling that he had done when Georgie was in front of him. The Hufflepuff was fairly certain that was because she was younger than her brother and still had a bit of a baby face – that and she was a girl, and Little Orphan Annie had made girl orphans so much more sympathetic than boys. When Lance came back to her, Georgie gave him a smile, trying to gauge if he felt any of the same guilt that she did. When he asked how much she had managed to lift, Georgie opened her fist to show a palm full of coins. “I didn’t count before you got here, in case he was looking.” She explained, already beginning to sort the coins in her palms. Three Galleons, two Sickles, and four Knuts. “Do you think it’ll be enough?” She asked. Georgie knew that Muggle piercings could be expensive, but wizards had to have a better way of doing it, the same way they had a better way of doing everything else. Maybe better meant cheaper, too. lancelot ray linley

@georgiana Peering over his sister’s shoulder to see her hand as she showed him the money, Lance nodded his head contentedly. The Galleons were the real kicker here. The money system in England was extremely strange to back home. Lance could feel his eye twitch at the thought of what home was. He had to mentally correct himself that this was home now, even if the money was weird to him still. “Not bad,” he added as they continued walking down the street. Lance had no idea what the prices were going to be like at a magical shop. Anything was possible he supposed. “Hopefully. If not, we’ll have to find some more.” Lance made sure to keep his voice low since the last thing he wanted to do was alert that the money Georgie had in her hands was pickpocketed from some poor unsuspecting soul. He felt like he should feel guilty over it, but he didn’t. It wasn’t like that man needed the money. Lance had felt how heavy the purse was when he ran it back, there was plenty in there to go around.
They turned another corner and Lance tried to pick out a store front that looked like a place that did piercings. He was sure the first thing that would be asked upon entering was what his sister wanted, since it probably seemed more likely than him getting one. Store after store went by, and there was nothing. This was frustrating. He was invested in this now. Georgie had become a criminal for this cause. Now it was his turn to follow through with all of it. Then he saw it. Up ahead was a tattoo parlor. “How about there?” He pointed towards the neon sign that was hanging out in front of it. As they approached though, Lance could feel his feet start to get heavy. Was this really a good idea? He knew piercings weren’t permanent, but there was the pain, and he was pretty sure they could get infected if he wasn’t careful. There were too many things he realized that he didn’t know about, and they were all flooding into his head just now, enough so that he stopped a few feet short of the door.

Georgie bobbed her head in a nod when her brother said that their haul wasn’t bad. If she had tried to take any more coins she probably would have dropped them, and this way she felt slightly less guilty, since a few Galleons weren’t going to put a man dressed as nicely as that one out of house and home. She flinched a little when Lance said that if they hadn’t already gathered – that was, stolen – enough currency they were going to have to find some more. She didn’t think that the same trick was going to work twice, and even if it would work, she wasn’t sure her conscience would be able to handle stealing from a second person, especially because striking something off of a bucket list was seeming like a less and less substantial reason. As they walked down the street, Georgie could see that Lance was scoping out a good place to get a piercing, so she kept a lookout for the man they had stolen from, just in case he happened to realize he had been duped. The possibility didn’t seem likely, but it was better to keep a lookout just in case, especially Georgie didn’t have a clue what would make a good place to get a piercing. When Lance pointed a place out, Georgie snapped to attention. “Too bad they won’t give me a tattoo.” Georgie commented when she saw that the store front Lance was looking out was technically a tattoo parlor. They normally did piercings, too, if what Georgie had heard was correct. Still, she liked to imagine the shock on everyone’s faces if she came back to Hogwarts with a tattoo on her face or something. (No, Georgie would not ever actually get a tattoo on her face, but imaging people’s reactions to it was funny nonetheless.) She began to walk towards the shop, but stopped when Lance did, before either of them actually walked through the door. “Getting cold feet?” She asked. Georgie was hoping that her brother would buck up and be brave, otherwise they had stolen for nothing. Then again, she wasn’t the one making a permanent change to her body, so could she really blame him for being scared? Georgie decided just to wait outside, looking at her brother to see if he’d make his decision or if they were going to get arrested for loitering. lancelot ray linley
