Viola's expression was serious, but at their statement that they could write him an essay, Brandon laughed. "No, I don't need anything like that. I'll just ask you when I need advice," he teased back. He actually wouldn't do that. Brandon was more one to try and figure things out on his own, but it was fun joking around like this with Viola. He shrugged at their question about what was up with him. "Not much. I spend most of my free time playing." Music, of course, but he assumed they would know that. "Either that or wandering around. I'm pretty boring," he told them casually. He didn't mind, but it was true.

Viola rolled their eyes when Brandon said that he didn’t need an essay. Just for that, they were going to write him one (and force him to read it, too). The boy went on to say that not much was going on his life, which probably shouldn’t have been surprising. It seemed like the only interesting person at Durmstrang was Maria, and that was only because she was flirting with half of Hogwarts. Viola snorted at Brandon anyways. “Yeah, you really are.” They agreed. Viola wasn’t one to be talking, since they were pretty boring, too. Other than spending time with Maria, all they did was homework and people watching. “We need to do something crazy so we have a story to tell if someone asks us what we did today.” Viola decided. What to do, though, they had no clue.

Brandon laughed when Viola agreed with the idea that he was boring. Well, that was nice. Then again, he didn't mind. Viola was straight and honest with their feelings and that was something that Brandon really appreciated. Then he shrugged at their suggestion. "All right. What do you want to do then?" He wasn't sure if they had any idea, but doing something crazy was their idea so he would give Viola a chance to come up with something before trying to think of it himself.

Brandon laughed at their scathing comment about him being boring, and Viola rolled their eyes. It was so weird to have someone who actually got their sense of humor. This friendship thing in general was just so weird. Brandon asked what they wanted to do, and Viola scoffed. “If I had an idea, do you think I’d still be here?” They asked. Viola wasn’t impulsive, but they also didn’t like to hem and haw over decisions. If they wanted something, they went after it, after making sure that it wouldn’t end in complete disaster. “You’re the one who went to this school for years. You have to know something interesting that we can do.” The only interesting place Viola had been was the Room of Requirement, but that was only interesting if you had an interesting idea to do with that.

Brandon rolled his eyes good-naturedly at Viola. "Yeah, but I'm not sure how interested you'd be in the things I normally do," he told her honestly. "I spend most of my time playing around with music, since that's the most exciting thing here to me." His eyebrows furrowed as he thought for a moment. "I guess we could try going to the astrology tower or outside on a walk or something." Really, Brandon wasn't good at finding fun things to do. Viola was about to learn that the hard way.

Viola blinked at Brandon when he said they wouldn’t be interested in his day-to-day activities. “Try me.” They challenged, folding their arms across their chest. It wouldn’t be fun to pretend to enjoy any number of things, but Viola was stubborn enough (and wanted to prove Brandon wrong enough) that they would go along with just about anything. They were surprised when what Brandon said was something they actually enjoyed doing. “I like music!” Viola protested, a little shocked that Brandon would think otherwise. “Do you know how to play any Gwen Stefani songs?” They asked. Gwen Stefani was cool.

Viola told Brandon to just try them and he smiled, "I like finding places and times to practice my music." They seemed receptive to the idea of doing something with music, though a little offended. Brandon shrugged, "Lots of people like listening to music. That doesn't necessarily mean they want to hear me play." That was a little distinctive, but Brandon was trying to explain his previous words. He smiled and nodded when Viola asked if he knew Gwen Stefani. "I know almost everything to do with music. Do you want me to play Gwen Stefani?" He asked curiously. If they were interested in hearing that, he would only be too happy to oblige.

Brandon was such a little musical nerd, and it was cute. It seemed his whole life revolved around music in some way, shape, or form. Viola raised their eyebrows when Brandon said that people liking music didn’t meant they had to like listening to him play music. “Let me walk you through this, B. I like you. I like music. What would make you think that I would not want to listen to you play music?” Viola asked. To them, it just seemed like pure logic. Also, they were really digging their new nickname for Brandon. B was a lot edgier, which was funny, since Brandon wasn’t edgy at all. In any case, it was shorter, and Viola was all about shortening names, if they could. “Hell yeah, I want you to play some Gwen Stefani!” Viola said in a moment of uncharacteristic excitement. “Can you play it on, like, a tuba? I’ve never heard Gwen played on a tuba.” That would be cooler than hearing a song played the way it normally was.

Viola made a fair point, but Brandon shrugged a little. "I don't like to assume that people want to listen to my music. That way I don't have to go through awkward situations where I think they do and I don't, but I won't make that mistake with you anymore," he promised. He laughed when they said they wanted to hear Gwen Stefani on a tuba. "Alright, I can do that. Let's go up to the room of requirement." He started to lead the way down the hall toward the room that could provide him with a tuba. He paced in front of the room a few times and smiled when it appeared. "Come on," he encouraged his friend, walking into the room and picking up a tuba. "Any particular song you'd like to hear?"

Viola rolled their eyes when Brandon said that he had had some awkward situations where he had assumed people wanted to hear his music and they actually hadn’t, and that his not offering to play was a way to avoid any future awkward situations. Only in Brandon’s mind (and in like, everyone else’s, but not Viola’s) would that make sense. Viola bounced on the balls of their feet when Brandon said that he could do what they asked of him. This was perhaps the coolest thing that had ever happened to them, like, ever. When the pair approached the room, Viola stood out of the way while Brandon opened the door, and then followed him. There was actually a tuba, and wow, Viola was actually geeking out a little. “Can you play Hollaback Girl?” They asked. Brandon seemed to know of Gwen Stefani, and that was one of her more popular songs, so Viola was optimistic that their request would be accepted. Viola wished they had a camera or something, so they could record this historic moment forever. “By the way, you’re totally my coolest friend now.” And also their only friend (well, the only person they felt comfortable calling a friend), but whatever.

Viola ignored his comment, instead asking him to play a specific song and Brandon nodded as he led the way into the room of requirement. He messed with the tuba for a few seconds, making sure that everything was working well and that it was tuned, though he'd realized after just a few visits to this room that the instruments it provided were always well-cared for and tuned. Which made playing for people that much easier. He nodded and smiled. "Here you go," he told Viola before he started to play the song they asked him to. As he started the intro, they told him he was their coolest friend and he shrugged a little. Hopefully they would take that as understanding, because he was already playing and couldn't speak back. Once he was done with the song, he lowered the tuba slowly and looked at Viola. "So ... what did you think?" he asked after a moment.

Viola was in absolute, total awe. This was honestly the best day of their life to date, because they had never had someone play a Gwen Stefani song just for them before. They watched Brandon, wide-eyed, for the entire song, taking in the way his fingers skidded across the keys of the tuba and the glint of the golden instrument under the lights of the room. This was the sort of memory that they were going to hold onto for the rest of their life. When the song ended, Viola broke into thunderous applause, which was louder than clapping from one person really ought to be. When they finally finished clapping, Viola was grinning like a lunatic. “Forget Maria. You’re my boyfriend now, and your job is to follow me around and play that song nonstop for the rest of forever.” Viola declared. “You’re actually the coolest, Brandon.” Viola rarely showed this much emotion, but they couldn’t stop smiling at Brandon in that moment.

Viola was obviously pleased by his performance and Brandon was quite proud of himself for bringing that side of them out. Actually, he hadn't seen them show that much emotion ... ever. They clapped loudly and he put the tuba down softly, nodding at the instrument. That hadn't been as hard as one might have expected it to be. He laughed at their comment. "Nonstop for forever?" he teased. "I mean, it was lots of fun, but I don't know if I'd be able to do that." He shrugged when Viola told him that he was the coolest. "Do you want to hear something else?" He didn't want to make them listen to him all day, but if Viola liked it that much, they might want another song, which he would be only too happy to oblige them with.

Viola chuckled when Brandon teased them about playing nonstop forever. “Forever or until I die, whichever comes second.” They teased right back. “I guess you kind of have to be alive for it to work, too…” They trailed off with a smirk. Viola wasn’t sure what Brandon believed about the afterlife, but that was beside the point. It was nice to feel like this, kind of bubbly and happy. Maria had unlocked quite a few confusing emotions, but she hadn’t quite inspired this level of looseness and lightness. Brandon asked if they wanted to hear anything else, and Viola shook their head. “One mind-blowing experience is enough for one day.” They said, sure that they would implode if Brandon did another Gwen song with as much amazingness as he had the first. “Why don’t you play me something that you like?” They suggested. Music was supposed to be a window to the heart or something stupid like that, so maybe Viola could learn something about Brandon.

Brandon laughed at Viola's immediate quip to his teasing. They were getting more comfortable with him, which was something that Brandon enjoyed. He liked making friends and his rather unexpected friendship with Viola was something that helped him feel like he belonged. He shrugged when they teased him some more. "If you say so," he muttered back, pretending to be somewhat offended, but expecting them to see straight through it. In fact, he wasn't sure he'd ever seen Viola so lighthearted and he was proud that he'd been able to help it happen. Viola didn't have any requests, other than Brandon play something that he liked for them. Brandon thought for a moment. That was sort of a hard request for him. Sure, he always had music he could play, but with a request like this he had to choose one song and what to play it on. He thought for a moment before an idea came to his mind. He wasn't sure how much Viola knew about muggle music, but they had requested Gwen Stefani so ... maybe they would recognize this. "Alright, I'm going to do a theme song from a muggle movie," he told her as he closed his eyes and wished for a piano ... or a violin. "Do you want to hear it on a piano or violin?" He honestly had no preference and thought that Viola might like it a bit more if they had a bit of input into the choice of instrument.
