Knowing that their father was no longer in pain and that their mother was no longer having to martyr herself to care for him were the only remotely good things that had come from their father's passing. The ice cream parlor still needed to be run, and Taylor still dragged themselves out of bed to assist Rosalie however she needed. Maybe it made them a terrible person, but they were glad that their father hadn't died during their busiest season. Most people didn't go buying ice cream in January.
They had taken their lunch break early, because of the slow work day. In the late morning hours, Diagon Alley wasn't filled with people, but there were still plenty who were out shopping. Being a familiar face around the street, Taylor usually wound up saying hello to a few people any time they stepped outside. Their pastel uniform was inviting, regardless, so even those who were just passing through had a tendency to take a second look.
This time, however, it was Taylor who made that second look. The young woman who had just walked past them was someone they had seen walk that same stretch of street countless times, albeit never recently. They had run down those cobblestones, too, come to think of it, but that had been the greatest entertainment when a shopping street full of adults had been their childhood playground.
“Magi?” Taylor called after her, walking quickly for the short distance needed to catch up. “Hey.” It was nice to see her again, and Taylor smiled along with their greeting. They had meant to write to her months before, but it had taken a back seat to everything else that had been going on. “Merlin, I haven't seen you in ages.” Not since the summer, at least, though Taylor couldn't even put a finger on when they had last seen Magdalena.
If nothing else, she looked as though she might have put on a little bit of weight since then, Taylor noticed. She didn't look bad; she had always been pretty, not that things between them had ever been romantic or sexual. “How are you?” they asked, hoping that she had been doing well. They knew how quickly things could change in just a short time.
