@maria <3 He had stayed much later than he planned to. Much later than he wanted to, in fact. The day had come and gone too quickly and while Samuel had gotten plenty of things done after work, he just wasn't tired enough to go home yet. He wandered around quite a bit, not sure where exactly was the best spot to relax or do anything. A growling sound reached his ears and he rose an eyebrow down at his stomach but ignored it and continued walking no where.
In fact, as hungry as he was, Samuel ended up at the place he had been shown the week prior. Some far away mountain in the woods just outside of Hogsmeade that Maria had taken him to. Not only taken him, but they had some unusual sort of bonding moment that in his opinion brought them much closer as friends. Samuel had been here for over an hour now; he had watched the sunset, a delicacy he hadn't seen in quite some time. It was still January so it was fairly cold, and he had set up a fire as he leaned back against a tree, looking down at the lights of the village below.

Well, this was not how she'd planned today. Few people knew when Maria's birthday was, mostly because few asked so she never told them. Unfortunately, two people that did know when her birthday was happened to be her grandparents. Her guardians. Two old souls that she hated and spent her whole teenage years trying to escape from and defy as much as possible. Being her 18th birthday of course they couldn't let it pass. A whole package though hadn't been expected. A letter reminding her what the plan was after this school year, definitely. But a package? She never got packages....
And when she'd opened it, she'd just about set the table in the Great hall on fire, and left (taking the package with her) with no explanation to Viola or Elias. Both would know that look though. The one that said she was about to explode and they'd be caught in the cross hairs if she didn't get away. This sort of anger was completely different from the usual. Usually it was a boil, usually steady built but sometimes quick. But this had been a switch. There'd been no building. No simmering. And her hands had almost ignited on the spot. No, she needed to just get away. From everything. Sneaking off school grounds wasn't the best idea, but there was nothing else she could think of. She didn't know the forest and never would have been able to navigate it. And anywhere at Hogwarts wouldn't be safe.
It took some work, quite a bit of work, but by the time the sun set she had managed to sneak off the grounds and trekked up the hill to that secluded spot. Package still tucked under her, she was too busy seeing red to realize that there was a campfire up t here. So it wasn't until she was close enough to make out a familiar head of thick dreadlocks that she stopped. Even though it was dark, and the shadows still mostly obscured her she felt that rage burning hotter at the idea that he was up here alone. It was her spot, not his. "I didn't say you could come up here whenever you wanted, Samuel." Oh, you could practically hear the crackling of flames in her voice, threatening to burst at any moment.

@maria <3 If it would mean anything to her, Samuel would've told her he hadn't expected any company. Considering it was so late at night, he never thought he'd come up here without Maria or at all again unless he was dragged. But it had seemed like the perfect spot to watch the sun set. Though he knew that wouldn't matter to her, and by the tone of her voice, nothing he said would. Her presence was even more unusual as it was not a visiting weekend nor was it the middle of the day.
"You didn't say I couldn't either." Whatever backlash he got from that he wasn't interested in. Maria knew he wouldn't take her disrespect, especially when we was in a bad mood and it wasn't his doing. She also wasn't even supposed to be there, and was lucky that Samuel didn't bring her back to the school at that moment. He could tell something was wrong, and he stood up and walked a few steps closer, the fire glistening on his face. "What happened?"

Maria didn't even bother trying to stop herself from being angry at his presence. Everything made her angry right now. It was like a wildfire that had run completely out of control and nothing would satisfy it. A fire that would burn... and burn... until it had destroyed everything in it's path, consumed everything that it could. Where even the company of those close to her (Elias, Viola, Samuel) would do nothing to satisfy the rage. Burning something though? That might... At least a little... She just hoped it wouldn't be someone.
It would probably be shocking that after he spoke she said... Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Even when he stepped closer and asked what happened she remained just as hauntingly mute. She just.... fixed him with the harshest gaze she could muster (and it was definitely a look to send a chill down anyone's spill) and stepped past him and towards the fire he'd started. She stared at it with that same harsh look, paused for only a moment, and then threw her free hand towards it just as her hand ignited into flames and a burst of flame shot out. The small campfire practically exploded, and when the flames settled the fire had doubled in size.

@maria <3 Her harsh stare caused him to stand up straighter. Samuel looked her up and down, not seeing anything physically wrong, but knowing the way she was acting, there was definitely something she wasn't saying. And... Maria continued to be silent, making Samuel even more confused and concerned. This wasn't her, not normally at least. The normal Maria wouldn't have stayed so quiet, she would've had a rude rebuttal to his comment.
If you asked him what he thought she was going to do next, he probably would've said something relating to fire. In Samuel's mind it was a good thing he'd already started a fire, otherwise Maria might've set the trees ablaze. That would've been dangerous. Samuel watched with lowered eyes as she threw fire, causing it to enlarge. He moved a few steps forward again as she had gotten closer to the fire, though Samuel kept a couple feet between them. His voice was much more gentle this time, "Maria?"

Making an already existing fire bigger did little to quench her desire to burn. It wasn't enough. Not nearly enough. She wanted to set this whole hill aflame, and watch it burn to ash. Everything. But, staring into flames helped. Focusing on the chaotic dance of the fire. She'd always found fire soothing, it's destruction. It was why she always felt better whenever she was setting things a flame. Or simply being around fire. The more, the better. She grit her teeth together. Before it wasn't enough. Not nearly enough. She still held onto that package under her arm, refusing to release the bane of her rage.
Hearing her name spoken so gently stirred her from her enraged trance, her eyes blinking painfully slow as they turned to stare at him. Just as intense. Just as angry. Just as harsh. "What?" Her voice cracked just like before.

@maria <3 She was not in the mood. And Samuel wasn't sure how to go about wording things without making her even more angry. To start, she had a package underneath her arm. Though he had a feeling that's what she was upset with. But why? Who sent her the package? What was in it? And why in the world was it so frustrating to her? Maria looked at him with that same glazed over, angry look and Samuel tilted his head, walking closer once more.
"What is going on? Why are you here so late?" Maybe that was stupid of him, but that was the question that came to him first. And Samuel thought that maybe if he could get her to slowly answer easier questions, asking about the package wouldn't be so difficult. They were fairly close now and he stayed put. The fire was closer to her and burning hot, but Samuel decided to stay where he was even if he felt like he was on fire. There was something wrong and he had to figure out what that was.

Samuel was asking questions. Of course he was asking questions. She'd ignored all previous questions he'd posed until now, so when he asked two more? Maria's intense gaze narrowed into slits. It was a stupid idea for her to be here, in general but especially in the evening, after the sun had set. He could report her to the school. Part of her knew he wouldn't though.
Should she tell him? What was wrong. What her grandparents had sent her. The idea of telling anyone made her even angrier. She didn't want anyone to know just how insane her and Elias' grandparents were. Instead of saying anything yet though, she grit her teeth together and looked back at the fire. Then, without warning she threw the package into the flames. The fire crackled and popped as a new source of fuel started to burn. The package didn't hold up, and there was cascades of white beneath. "They sent it. To make sure it fit." She hissed, her voice straining to control that raw and feral temper of hers. To fit... it was fabric inside the box. Sewn into a dress. There was really only one kind of dress that came in white.

@maria <3 Samuel knew Maria meant to be intimidating. Yet he wasn't afraid of her. There was something about her that left him wanting to know more, even if she glared and made bigger fires and kept quiet. It wasn't like Samuel to just leave it all be, and it felt like Maria was beginning to understand that herself.
She answered his question vaguely. His whole body flinched when he saw her fling the package into the fire. Not that he had known what it was, he just had an initial reaction to a gift being burnt. Though, as the glittery white dress burned in front of him and Maria spoke, he understood completely. Samuel ended up standing right next to her, holding up his hand to touch her arm but stopped mid air. Call him crazy, but he honestly thought for a moment that if he touched her he might poof into ashes, so he decided against it. "Maria..." What was there too say? Sorry wouldn't cut it.

It wasn't burning fast enough. Which only infuriated her even more. Why couldn't it just be gone? Nothing left but ashes. But the cracking of the fire as it burned the fabric was a very satisfying sound. She didn't care what the repercussions might be from her grandparents. Especially when they didn't receive a response. No doubt after long enough radio silence her grandmother would send her yet another howler. Seriously, the woman should stop, they'd stopped phasing Maria in her second year.
Samuel had moved closer, to stand next to her. She caught a glimpse of him out of the corner of her eye, reaching out to touch her... but she didn't feel the contact being made. He must have stopped. "Don't." It was a double meaning. Don't touch her because her anger was burning so hot she couldn't trust herself not to catch on fire without any warning. Don't try to apologize or make it better. Don't try to tell her it was fine. Don't try to fix it, because it couldn't be fixed. This was her life. Her constant since childhood. A fate she'd been fighting since she entered Durmstrang and realized their was more to life then obeying her grandparents.

@maria <3 One word. That's all she said. And it was one that was easily taken in and understood. Samuel knew what Maria meant. He wasn't going to touch her or apologize. All he could do was try to be there and comfort her. Which even then, he wasn't sure he could do. It was oh so tempting to just hug her like the week prior, push her hair behind her ear and move on from this craziness they called life, even if only for a little while. Samuel's hand fell, and he put both hands in his pea coats pockets. Samuel faced Maria knowing full well she might not do the same. "What do you want? What do you want me to do? Putting everything on fire isn't going to help you, you know that." Even if it made her feel better for the time being, it wouldn't change anything.

Setting everything on fire wouldn't help? Maria turned her head to look at him, her gaze as intense as the fire in front of her. "Why not?" She demanded to know. Why wouldn't burning everything help? Why wouldn't it make this all better? "Why won't setting everything on fire make it better?" She continued, just as demanding as before. It was how she'd solved everything other problem before now. How else was she supposed to make it all better? Diplomacy? Talking about her feelings? Both things she hated, and only made her even more frustrated. "What if all I want is to set everything on fire and just watch it all burn?" Because right now? That was what she wanted. That was all she wanted. To burn, and burn, and burn, until nothing was left.

@maria <3 Samuel sighed. He wasn't agitated or annoyed with Maria, but himself. How was he supposed to explain to her that it wouldn't help? All he was glad about was that he had been here before her, and this beautiful mountain wasn't being burned to bits at this moment. Samuel was sure if he hadn't been here, it would all be gone by morning. Her tone of voice sounded chaotic, almost desperate to him. Like she needed to watch this beautiful forest burn to feel better. And he did what she told him not to, because he didn't care anymore. Samuel walked two steps closer and let his hand touch her shoulder, looking into her eyes. "That may be what you want. But it won't fix anything. It will make you feel physically better. But your grandparents won't go away. They're thoughts and remarks won't go. Just because you burn something doesn't make it all disappear, Maria." Samuel's voice was quiet, the crackling of the bonfire snapping in their ears. He hoped his comment made her understand, instead of anger her more.

Burning had always been the answer for Maria. Her 'fix all'. It'd always made everything better, because there'd never been a situation where it couldn't. Not when she was this angry. Not when she could destroy the source of her wrath. So when he spoke? Telling her it wouldn't fix anything there was a moment where she was taken back. She didn't even feel his hand on her shoulder, just met those green eyes with her brown. His words were practically a bucket of ice water being dumped on her head, extinguishing all that fiery rage.
Because was right. About how it'd make her feel physically better but it wouldn't solve anything with the source of her anger. Her grandparents would still be there. They'd still keep pushing, and pushing. They'd keep stirring up these same feelings. Maria pulled away from him, letting that hand that had been on her shoulder drop away as she took those steps back and balled her hands into fists again. "What else am I supposed to do?" She sounded almost desperate. "I've done... I've done everything to try and ensure that no one would want me. And yet...." And yet they wouldn't give up. No matter how much she slept around and ruined their idea of a virgin bride. No matter how much trouble she got into at school or 'home' to ensure that no one in the community would want to have so one so untamed or their sons. No matter how much she flaunted the fact that she was a half breed (both in their culture and physically) so they wouldn't even give her a look.

@maria <3 He was in shock that Maria didn't even flinch. She didn't react to him touching her, didn't try to burn him, and didn't even speak for a moment. The touch seemed to light a fire through his own body and he became more alert. Of course it wasn't an actual fire, but it was like he could feel her skin burning up through her clothes. It was still January and still cold out, so for her to be that warm through multiple layers was incredible to him. But this sudden surprise to him was interrupted by her moving quickly, his hand falling back down to his side.
It seemed to Samuel that Maria might have understood what he said. She wasn't setting the trees around him on fire so that was a good sign, yet he could tell she still wasn't okay. She wasn't acting like herself. But the dress was gone, it was burned to ash, and she still couldn't calm herself down. To think that this was how she reacted every time her grandparents did something was upsetting to him. Maybe if he continued to remind her that her ability wouldn't do anything to change them, she'd be able to control it more. Samuel was sure these sudden outbursts weren't doing anything to help.
Maria spoke and Samuel wasn't sure what to do anymore. He had said everything he could. He told her the truth and even though she didn't like it, she still had more to say. There wasn't anything for her to do, not anymore. Except to live her life, but she's done that in all the wrong ways. Sleeping around wasn't doing anything but hurting herself, though if Samuel tried to tell her that again this time she might actually throw fire at him. Samuel shook his head angrily and stepped forward. Maria just needed to calm down and shut up, and as unfortunate as this was to have to do, Samuel did it anyways. His hands grabbed her cheeks and he pulled her close, the heat from both of them coming together in a kiss.
