@maria <3 He didn't sleep, but ended up heading downstairs to get some food. He had been there very long, and was beginning to get hungry. But Elias knew Maria wouldn't mind, so he had left and ended up down there for awhile, speaking to a few students here and there. After he had finished eating, however, Elias decided it was time to head back to the Hospital Wing to see how Maria was doing.
Slowly, he walked up the stairs, counting how many it took to get to the first floor. And while that could've entertained him for quite some time, it was interrupted by the one thing he never expected to hear. And that was Maria's screaming. Elias looked up, eyes wide, and ran. Ran as fast as he could up every step, down every hall, and burst through the hospital wing doors.
What he saw was going to be etched in his brain forever. The sight of horror on her face, the fear, and the screaming echoed in his brain. The nurses were trying to calm her down and talk to her, but whatever Maria was looking at, whatever she saw in front of her...Elias had to make it go away. "Maria...Maria!" He spoke quietly at first, but the second time he said her name he yelled. Elias ran over to the front of her bed, frantically searching her eyes, desperately hoping she'd see HIM, and not whatever hallucination was presenting itself.
Elias felt himself shaking, and tears fell down his face as he got closer to her. "Maria!" Their screams intertwined together, echoing off the walls of the hospital wing.

Maria would have given anything to see her parents before now. Would have done anything to change their fate. But not like this. She didn't want to see them like this. Covered in cockroaches, pale and thin from decay. Dead eyes. It was a horrible, horrible sight. And that wasn't even counting what they said. In voices so familiar they shook her to the core. Asking her why they'd died. Blaming her for their deaths. Even when her ears were covered she could still hear them. Still hear them over her own screaming.
The healers' efforts to calm her down fell on deaf ears and only really succeeded in backing Maria into a corner. Where she was now huddled in, curled up into a fetal position as she rocked back and forth. Still screaming. Elias' entrance normally would have caught her attention. This time though... it was almost like she couldn't focus on him until his third attempt to say her name, his own desperate scream matching her own. Finally, Maria stopped screaming. But she was crying, hysterically.

@maria <3 Finally. Her screams stopped, and so did his. And the only sounds left in the hospital wing were those of the cousin's crying. Elias stared at Maria, as she sat in the corner huddled into herself, rocking back and forth. He swallowed, his throat hoarse from all the screaming. He didn't know what to do. All he knew was he needed to help her.
Elias feel to his knees, only a few feet from Maria. Tears continued to fall down his cheeks and he slowly crawled over to her, sobs escaping his lips. Only a few inches away now, he sniffled, but held his hand out to her, allowing her to either push it away or pull him in. He hoped for the latter. "They're gone, Maria. They're gone. There's nothing here. It's just me. Only me, focus Maria. It's Elias, I'm here..."

The healers had taken a step back, hoping that someone Maria knew might have better luck in getting through to her. At least she'd stopped screaming, which was a plus, so most of them went back to their duties, a few still hovering. She'd already hurt someone once before during the last hallucination episode, it wouldn't be too shocking if it happened again. And the last thing they needed was another student getting hurt. Especially a school champion.
Maria wasn't looking at Elias. Her gaze, wide eyed despite the heavy stream of tears, stayed trained on a spot a few feet away. Nothing was there to the normal eye. But to her that was where her parents stood. Still so horribly dead. Still so terrifying wretched looking. Still blaming her for their deaths in those painfully familiar voices. Somehow she managed to hear Elias' voice over their own. And though she didn't see him she knew he was right there next to her. But was it him? Or another hallucination? Would he look just like them? She dared not look. He was trying to tell her nothing was there. How couldn't he see them? Maria's heart was beating painfully fast and hard in her chest, and kept rocking back and forth. Sobbing. "They're there.. They're there...!" Was all she said, desperately praying that this wasn't all just in her head. She didn't want to go crazy. Didn't want to lose her mind.

@maria <3 What else could he possibly do? She wasn't going to believe him, wasn't going to know what she was seeing wasn't real. But he had to try. He had to do something. Her sobs and her rocking were scaring him even more. Elias didn't know what the healers were going to do if the hallucinations didn't stop. The only thing he could think of was giving Maria a potion to go to sleep, and that was beginning to seem like the only possibility.
Elias looked down at her bracelet that he got her. Hm...If he felt like he was in danger, would it burn? He didn't feel afraid, but who says Maria wasn't about to throw balls of fire at him in any moment? He reached forward and grabbed her wrist. "Maria. It's me...I gave you this bracelet remember? To tell you if I'm ever in trouble... Or if I'm hurt. I'm scared, Maria. Look at me, please Skupa."

Maria was wearing the bracelet Elias gave her for Christmas. She always wore it, refusing to take it off even if it didn't match her current outfit. Her need to know Elias was alright outweighed her need to be totally fashionable. And up until that moment it'd completely escaped her that it was warm. Just enough that on a normal day she would have noticed it. The slight heat was a sign, that there was something wrong with Elias. In this case that he was scared. But she was too consumed by the incurable itching and the vision of her dead parents that she was oblivious. Until She felt a firm hand grab her wrist. Elias. Maria's eyes tore away from her visions to stare wildly at her cousin, as if she'd been ripped away from the illusions and forced back to reality, if only for a moment. She could still see her parents, behind Elias now. Could still see the cockroaches. "They're dead, Elias. They're dead, but they're here." She was almost pleading. As if hoping he might have an answer to stop all of this. She didn't need to say who 'they' were. He knew who was dead in her life. Her parents, his aunt and uncle. And obviously by the sheer horror and terror in her voice it wasn't a pleasant hallucinated reunion either. Part of her knew this wasn't real, seeing her parents. But fear was a powerful emotion. Especially Maria's. Maria's emotions in general were so extreme and raw. When she felt anything, she felt it in every fiber of her body. At least there was never any doubt of what emotion Maria was feeling, she was quite open and easy to read like that.
Her hands were sparking. Not igniting, thank heavens, but definitely sparking. Not a good sign. She'd clenched both hands into fists and pressed them against her forehead as she rocked even faster on her heels. No, she couldn't lose control here. Hurting Viola had been bad enough. But Elias? Never him. "It's not my fault, it's not my fault..!" She was zoning out again, forgetting that Elias was there as those kept blaming her.

@maria <3 His cousin's reaction was not one that Elias had ever seen before. She looked like she was losing her mind, as if she had no control over what was happening. And really, she didn't. Not right now. Right now, things were happening that Elias couldn't see. That weren't real. But Maria didn't know that. The way she saw it, it was all real. They were all there, happening, speaking to her, crawling around and getting closer. Like a live nightmare, like the boggart in the maze. Elias' heart hurt for her, her pleading repeating over and over in his brain.
The hand he had held, the one with the bracelet on it...there were small flickers of fire here and there. His eyes widened. She'd never burned him before, and he wasn't ever scared she would. But now...she had burned herself for heavens sake. Who would say she wouldn't burn him now, too? Elias looked to Maria, worry running through his eyes as he squeezed her wrists a little tighter. "No, it isn't your fault Maria. None of it is your fault or was your fault. They're lying, Maria."

Maria stopped rocking, going almost deathly still as she felt an increased pressure on her wrists. Though it'd been only a few moments since he first grabbed her wrists it had already slipped from her mind, and remembering his presence was enough to pull her back. The right grip on her wrists and her cousin's words, desperately telling her it wasn't true, finally gave her the strength to close her eyes. To at least shut out the visions. She couldn't stop crying though, her now silent tears streaming down her cheeks and she leaned back into the corner, Stil curled up in the smallest ball. She would have tucked her hands on as well but he still held her wrists tightly, her fingertips still sparking just a little. "I don't want to go mad, Elias..."

@maria <3 "You're not going mad, Maria. I wouldn't let that happen to you, I'm here. I'm going to protect you, Maria." The tears filled up in his eyes as he stared into his cousin's face. He was protecting her, he was doing anything he could possible to make sure she was safe. And as of late, he hadn't done that. He'd been too fed up with the tournament and the task and trying to study this damn Niffler instead of spending time with his best friend. Elias let go of one of her wrists and wiped some tears from her cheeks. "Just breathe, Maria. Take deep breaths." What was he supposed to do other than talk her through this vision of sorts? Elias couldn't stop the hallucinations. He could try to help her ignore them, but he wasn't sure he could.

Maria swallowed hard and opened her teary eyes to look at her cousin as he spoke. About not letting it happening and protecting her. Was it that simple? She wished. How did you stop these visions? And him protecting her... "I'm supposed to protect you though, Elias..." She whispered, her voice quivering. She needed to protect him. He was one of the most important people to her in her life. Her very world half revolved around him. Around her cousin and best friend. She hated that when he already had so much going on already with the Tournament he now had to deal with her onset of insanity.
Her eyes closed once more when he released her wrist and reached out to wipe away some of her tears. Why was this happen? Why did she have to have these hallucinations? What the hell was wrong with her? His request, to take deep breaths was immediately followed. The girl inhaled slowly and deeply, held for a moment, and then exhaled. And then another breath identical to the first. Then a third. Finally Maria moved away from leaning against the wall and into her cousin instead, her arms tucked in tight between them and her face pressed against his chest as she full on sobbed.

@maria <3 Elias looked down at Maria, almost like a glare, but she probably wouldn't realize the difference. He knew she thought she had to take care of him, but hell, he had a mother. A mother who he loved dearly, and he had gone along fine without a father in the picture. Yes, Maria was only a few months older than he, but that didn't matter. She had enough stress and difficulty in her life; Elias was here to watch over her and be there for her. Both of them took up that part in the other's life, making sure they were safe and loved. That's what brought them so close to one another. "Maria, I'll always be here to protect you and to care for you. Obicham te, Maria."
As soon as he spoke those last few words, the girl leaned immediately into him, and Elias wrapped his arms around her tightly. It had been a very long time since Elias had seen Maria this broken. And as she sobbed into him, he felt the tears silently roll down his cheeks. Elias wasn't one to really cry, especially sob, but just hearing his best friend, his cousin, his sister making the sounds she was, broke him apart. The guilt ran through him like crazy, knowing that if they had been spending more time together, this may not have happened. Maria may have been safe, but Elias hadn't been around enough. He had been focusing on the tournament - so much that he couldn't really recall the last time he had spoken to Maria. That's the thought that made a noise escape his mouth, and he squeezed her tighter.
