Maria said that she was capable of many things, and Viola smirked. “I won’t deny that.” They said. Maria did plenty of things that Viola would never dream of doing, both because they didn’t have the guts or the physical capacity to do it. “But trust me, this is the one thing that you won’t be able to do.” Viola sincerely hoped that Maria didn’t take that as a challenge, because as much as they talked, Viola knew there was still a different way for Maria to break them. They didn’t want to think about it.
Viola understood now why people searched their entire lives for love. There was something intoxicating about wanting and being wanted. There was something intoxicating about being kissed, and forgetting that those same lips had met countless others before theirs. When the kiss ended, Viola blinked at Maria. “Thank you.” They said simply. Maria had scolded them before about thanking her for something that she wanted to do, but Viola wanted Maria to know that they appreciated her listening to what they said.

It wasn't that Maria wanted to break Viola, most definitely not. But... She might make them bend quite a bit. In a good way though. Or at least... Maria considered it good. Rather then say any of that though Maria just nodded.
Maria didn't kiss Viola for long, instead keeping it soft but short. And when she broke it? To her surprise Viola was thanking her. Viola had been right to remember Maria scolding them, because her mouth opened to repeat those words without hesitation. "Don't thank me for doing what I want." She kept her hand still pressed against Viola's cheek. "I'm glad you're safe now, Viola. Truly." She whispered once more, her gaze intensely gazing into Viola's. "Please, tell me how I might make it up to you. Anything you want, Viola."

Viola chuckled a little when Maria scolded them once again for their thanks. “I knew you were going to say that.” Viola commented, in case Maria was wondering why that had caused laughter. They leaned into the hand Maria had on their cheek, ignoring the dull throb of pain from where Maria’s fingers cradled them. It was fine, because she was making them feel better emotionally. Healers could give them more pain potion whenever, but they couldn’t exactly erase Viola’s anxieties about Maria – just cover them up. When Maria asked how she could make it up to them, Viola was tempted to insist that they didn’t need, nor want, anything from her. But that was just a lie. “I want an honest answer.” They said, steeling themself for the question they were about to ask. Maria had already promised to be truthful to them, but Viola didn’t want her dodging the question, and this was a great way to do it. “Do you love me? You don’t have to say it, I just need a yes or no.” Viola couldn’t believe that they had asked that. They weren’t trying to pressure Maria, but they needed to know.

Viola's chuckle was music to Maria's ears and it brought a wide grin to her lips. "That's because it needed to be said." She answered. And she'd keep saying it until Viola stopped thanking her for 'doing what she wanted'. She'd tried to keep her hand light against Viola's cheek, in hopes that she wouldn't aggravate the healing skin, but Viola didn't seem to care as they leaned into her hand.
Then the wait began. To see what Viola might ask for. Whatever it was, Maria would do it. She didn't care at the moment of the consequences. Her gaze didn't waver as she waited, almost desperate. Until finally? Viola started to speak. An honest answer. Maria's eyes widened just a touch. To what? Maria had already promised to be honest with them. When Viola finished her request though.... Her eyes went even wider, and the dots finally connected. Did she love Viola. Love. A concept that Maria had such a strong aversion to. A concept that, because of her past was extremely difficult for her to understand, or even accept into her life. This all narrowed down to one large problem. "I don't know." Maria barely found her voice for that answer, speaking so softly that she almost didn't even hear herself. It wasn't the answer Viola wanted, she knew that. But it was honest. "It's been a long time since I've let myself love. Or believed in it. But I know I want to be around you Viola. I want to be yours and you mine." She couldn't admit being in love, because she couldn't even recognize what it felt like. But she could admit what she did know.

Maria’s eyes getting wider and wider at what they said would have been comical, if Viola hadn’t asked such a serious question. The answer…was interesting. It was better than a flat out no, though, and Viola could work with Maria not knowing. They weren’t going to pretend like they could teach her what love felt like, because that was something that Maria had to figure out for herself, but they were willing to wait. Not forever, but pretty damn close. Viola could be a very, very patient first. “I want to be around you, too.” Viola said quietly. If Maria couldn’t say I love you, then Viola would find solace in using the phrases were as close to it as the girl could come. As for being Maria’s, and Maria being theirs – Viola had already made their opinion on that known. “Can I ask a follow-up?” Viola inquired, even though they were intending to ask their second question with permission or not. They asked it mostly so that Maria would be prepared. “If you ever do know…tell me? Even if it’s no.” It was another thing that fell under Maria’s umbrella of honesty, but Viola wanted to be sure that they didn’t have to ask Maria every day whether or not she had figured out how to love. No matter how little they tried to pressure her, it was still going to be pressuring if it happened every single damn day.

Hearing Viola repeat back that they wanted to be around her too was enough for Maria. To know that, while it hadn't been the answer Viola wanted, it was an answer they would accept. It was the best answer Maria could give though. So, at the request to ask a follow-up question Maria nodded. Thankfully she wasn't nearly surprised by this question as she was the first. "You'll be the first to know." Maria immediately promised. Whatever the answer was, she would tell Viola. Part of Maria didn't know if she would ever know for sure. Considering her past... What if she never found out? What if she never figured out what love was supposed to feel like, and how to recognize it? None the less... If she ever did... That was the real request. Not when she found out. If. Viola seemed to know that it might not ever happen, or at least not for a long time.
Maria finally, and carefully, removed her hand from Viola's cheek and let it fall to rest on the crisp white sheet to their side, just a breath away from their hip. "Is there anything you need right now, Viola? Anything I can get for you?' She asked. Maria's protective side had already been showing before now, and it wasn't going to go away anytime soon. Especially since Viola had been so badly hurt. Were they uncomfortable in anyway? Was there something she could do to help them? Even something trivial like going to get them something to eat would be fine. She wanted to take care of her partner.

Maria said that if she ever did figure out what I meant to love someone, they would be the first to know, and that was what Viola had asked for, so they couldn’t be upset, especially since their girlfriend’s response had been immediate. She wasn’t unsure whether or not she would tell Viola, it seemed, but unsure about whether she would know in the first place. Which was fine, Viola told themself. They hadn’t gone into this relationship with any preconceived notions of “fixing” Maria or anything. They had just…wanted to know, they supposed, what it would be like to be with Maria. Being on this hospital bed seemed to be a pretty good metaphor for it; Maria burned them badly, but she was always there to help them heal. Viola wish that they could just stop thinking for a moment, because then they wouldn’t have to overanalyze this and drive themself crazy.
The weight of Maria’s hand falling off their cheek snapped Viola back to attention, just in time to hear Maria asking if they needed anything. They couldn’t think of anything off the top of their head that they needed, but Viola knew that Maria was probably only asking because she wanted to feel useful – that was what Viola would have done in her situation, at least. “Can you get me a glass of water?” Viola asked. It was the first thing that popped into their head, and since they were talking, their throat was beginning to get a little raspy, so maybe the errand wasn’t a total waste of time.

The request for water was so small and insignificant. But it was something. Maria immediately nodded and slid off the bed to stand. "I'll be right back." she explained as she pushed the privacy curtain open to slip out. Finding the water wasn't hard, she asked one of the nurses for it. They seemed quite hesitant at first but since she seemed perfectly sane at the moment they eventually relented and handed her the glass and pitcher, with a message that they'd be checking in Viola in just a minute and Maria would have to be back at her own bed when that happened.
Maria was almost back to Viola's bed when the itching began again. She almost dropped the glass and pitcher right there but somehow managed to get the on the bedside table. "The healer is on her way." she muttered as she fought the urge to scratch.

Viola watched as Maria left, glad that they had given her something to do but sorry to see her go. When Maria returned she seemed…different. “Is everything okay?” They asked softly as Maria plunked the pitcher and glass down on the bedside table. Viola wouldn’t put it past one of the nurses to give Maria a stern lecture on spousal abuse or something of the sort, but they certainly hope that hadn’t happened. From what they could see, Maria had already been beating herself up enough without another person adding to all of that pain. “Do you have to go?” Viola croaked, reaching for the pitcher but then realizing they didn’t quite trust themself to pour a glass of water without spilling. If the nurses were going to be checking them, they’d probably ask Maria to leave. Viola wouldn’t mind if she stayed, of course, since Maria had already seen most of what there was to say, but the nurses were a different story. And Maria probably also didn’t want to see them burned, either…

Nothing slipped past, Viola, did it? They seemed to know immediately that something had changed when Maria came back. "Yes." She answered slowly, struggling to fight the urge to scratch. She didn't want to worry Viola any more then she already had. And if she said the itching was back? Well, it might make them wonder if... everything that followed last night would happen to. If the itching was just the first sign of an impending hallucination. With a deep breath, she lifted the pitcher and poured the glass, only half full. Only after setting the pitcher down did she hold the glass out to Viola to take. "I don't think they'll let me stay, and it'd be wise to be on my best behavior in here." She didn't want to give them a reason to keep her from visiting Viola after all. She'd started to scratch a spot on her arm as she spoke, but immediately stopped herself when she realized what she was doing. "I can come back later though, just a few beds down after all." She teased, smiling in the process and locking her fingers together to stop any potential urge to scratch.

Maria’s answer to their question seemed hesitant, but Viola didn’t want to question her any further. Their girlfriend seemed to have realized Viola’s hesitation to pour their own water, and filled a glass half full for them. Viola took the glass and took a long, slow sip, peering over the top of the glass at their girlfriend. They were probably just worried because of the way their last encounter had ended, Viola told themself. Nothing was wrong – it was just their subconscious projecting onto the situation. “Alright.” Viola said, setting the glass down. “I’ll be sad to see you go.” There. Maria was scratching herself, just like she had been last night, just like she had been before she burned them – Shut up. Viola was just being paranoid, and that was all it was. Viola blinked up at Maria, opening their mouth to say something, when one of the nurses entered. Viola clapped their mouth shut, but then opened it again to ask a totally different question. “I’ll see you later?” Viola asked Maria before she could be hustled away.

To be fair, Maria didn't want to go either. An unusually protective side of her was showing itself, and she had the strongest of urges to protect what was hers. Even from the Healers. Alas, that sort of behavior would be severely punished, and Maria didn't want to get banned from visiting her partner. So, she'd let the healers help Viola. They could heal them up faster then she could, after all. Destroying things? Oh she was a master at that. But healing? Not so much. "I'll just be a few beds down. You can always yell for me. You know I'll come running." She really would. Maria could be summoned almost like a dog by Viola. The curtain was being pulled open and Maria knew her time was up. "As soon as they'll let me come back, I will." She answered firmly as she reached out and squeezed one of Viola's hands. It was a short, but fond gesture and once Maria left, the curtain closed, she let out a breath and finally stopped fighting the urge to scratch...
That was when all hell broke loose. Maria wasn't allowed to return to visit Viola later that day.
