Jamie was having a rather interesting day. She had checked out a book from the library, and upon opening it, had found a piece of parchment, folded twice, stuck in between the pages. She had opened it, half-expecting to find that someone had accidentally forgotten their notes in the book, but it wasn’t the case. Instead, she found…pick-up lines. It was a parchment paper full of pick-up lines. Some of them were good, but some of them were outrageously bad, and Jamie found the fact that someone had written over a dozen pickup lines on a sheet of parchment amusing to no end. She felt as if she had been given a gift. A rather bizarre gift, of course, but a gift nonetheless. The proximity to Valentine’s Day just made it better, because it meant that Jamie felt less strange than normal approaching a person and hitting on them. Smiling with glee, Jamie had made her way down to the Hufflepuff common room, intent on finding some to laugh with – or, preferably, someone to test her lines on.
When she entered the room, Jamie was about ready to burst into laughter. The room was empty with the exception of one person: Cordelia Smith. Cordie was known for her lack of interest in romantic suitors, probably because her one true love was photography. Seeing her react to the pick-up lines would be funny, and Jamie wouldn’t even feel mean, because if Cordie ever found out why she was doing this, she would probably laugh, too. With that thought in mind, Jamie walked right over to the other girl. "Did you just use Stupefy or are you a natural stunner?"

@jamie Empty. That was the general description of the Hufflepuff common room today. Which was perfect, because that meant Cordelia could sit in peace and quiet with little to no disturbance from her housemates. She had found a really fun charms book in the library earlier in the week and figured now was the best time to read it and try some of the spells out. She wasn’t exactly opposed to practicing them in front of others, but not having an audience only made it easier to complete them. Doing everything on her own meant she wouldn’t fear using them in front of other people if the time came for it. That was one of the reasons she was so bent on being ahead in her studies; so as to not make a fool of herself in class.
There were some particularly interesting charms that had to do with levitation control, as well as color changing and other nonsense ones that were fun to mess around with. She was floating multiple empty film canisters in the air when she heard the door to the common room open. Normally she wouldn’t have paid heed to the person, since her concentration was on rotating the film canisters in a circle around each other, but the person had stopped right near her. Cordelia didn’t look up immediately, but feeling the presence of the person there finally got to her. Still maintaining the levitation of the canisters, she turned to face the person, and realized it was Jamie. Except Jamie was asking her a really strange question about casting Stupefy. Cordelia could feel her eyebrows furrow as she tried processing the question. “N-No?” Was all she could manage out in her now confused state.

Jamie was glad that the Hufflepuff common room was empty, because she was sure that there would be someone who bust into outrageous laughed at Cordie’s response to Jamie’s obviously poor pickup line. And while Jamie found Cordelia’s response funny, she didn’t want to be teasing the girl in front of a lot of other people…especially since there was no guarantee that Cordie would realize that Jamie was teasing for quite some time. The other girl seemed to be confused at the moment, which made Jamie doubt her intentions for a moment. She was just being funny, not malicious…right? Right. She was like Lily, poking fun of people for their own benefit. She just didn’t have the same bubbliness to make it go over quite as smoothly, Jamie convinced herself. Well, now it was time to move on to the next pickup line, since Cordie didn’t seem to have much of a reaction to the first one. Jamie looked at the list she had been given, and decided to stick with her previous theme of spells. "Your smile’s like Expelliarmus: simple but disarming." Jamie said, smiling at Cordelia, and then throwing in a wink, too, because if she was going to be using pickup lines, then why not flirt a little while she did it? Jamie hoped that Cordie would have something more to say to that than the first one, but since it wasn’t a direct question, maybe the other Hufflepuff would clam up. cordelia regan smith

@jamie She still didn’t understand Jamie’s question. Why would the other Hufflepuff think she was casting Stupefy? Clearly she was sitting there, minding her own business, and spinning film canisters around in the air. There was no way that could be mistaken for the stunning spell. Speaking of the film canisters, they were still rotating in the circular motion that she had them in. Clearly the question hadn’t broken her concentration that much. She always believed that she had rather strong abilities when it came to ignoring distractions. It was pretty easy to do when the rest of her year goofed off in class all the time. Especially the Gryffindors. She couldn’t blame them though, they always looked like they were having fun.
Cordelia continued to look up at Jamie, hoping to get some kind of explanation, but instead she pulled out a piece of paper and looked at it. After a few seconds, she made eye contact again with Cordelia and laid out another confusing statement. This time she smiled though. And winked. That one caught her off guard a little, one of the film canisters dropping out of the air. The rest were still going though. “Ummm…th-thanks?” Now she wanted to know what was on that paper, since it seemed like Jamie had read off it. Usually people just left her alone to do her own thing, only bothering to talk to her if they had a question about her photographs. Even more so, when was the last time she actually actively talked to Jamie? Pleasantries aside, a year or two ago? She didn’t mind conversations every once in a while, but this wasn’t exactly the kind she was used to, especially when it didn’t really make sense.

Cordelia seemed more and more confused with each passing minute, and once again Jamie had to re-evaluate what to do in this situation. She would tell Cordie at the end of this that she had found a list of pickup lines in a book, Jamie decided, so that the other girl didn’t think that Jamie was coming onto her or something like that. Jamie was far too interested in a mysterious letter-writer to go after someone like Cordelia, who didn’t seem that interested in romance to start with. At the thought of her pen pal, Jamie smiled a little – she’d have to share this list with her at some point, just to see what the other girl had to say about it. Jamie was startled from her reverie by the sound of a film canister plunking to the ground. Jamie wondered how bewildered Cordelia would have to be in order for all of them to fall. “You are quite welcome.” Jamie said with a smile when Cordelia stuttered out her thanks. “You know I play Quidditch. I know a Keeper when I see one.” Jamie was rather proud of herself for finding that one in the list, especially because it flowed a lot better than the previous one had, at least in the grand scheme of the conversation. She continued to grin at Cordelia, a smile that was slightly cockier and definitely a lot bolder than people were probably used to seeing Jamie say. She glanced back down at her list, mentally crossing off the pickup lines she had already used and trying to determine the best one to use next – though that would probably depend on Cordelia’s reaction.

@jamie Now Jamie was going on about how she played Quidditch. She knew that already, as did anyone else that actively paid attention to the sport. While she was no good at it, her father had played professionally, so it wasn’t like the sport was completely alien to her. Watching a photographing matches was also extremely liberating, because the speed of the players really pushed her to the limits, as well as the camera. But Jamie was saying how she knew a Keeper when she saw one. Well, so did Cordelia. It was quite easy to tell which player on the pitch was the Keeper, they were almost always directly in front of the goal posts. Then it hit her. Jamie was calling her the Keeper. And then that went another step further, as each of the questions started to make sense to her. She was using pickup lines on Cordelia. Why her, of all people? Had she been waiting until the common room cleared out on purpose? Another film canister started to dip lower to the ground, but Cordelia caught it mentally, flicking her wand slightly to get it back up to the height of the others. She wasn’t going to let this get to her. While she may have been a little slow on the uptake, it wasn’t like she was blind to these kinds of things. Just ignored them most of the time, or pretended like they didn’t exist. But when there was someone directly in front of her using lines to get her attention, it was hard to block it all out. Cordelia could feel herself start to blush slightly, not from the content of the phrases or the fact that Jamie seemed to be pursuing her for some reason, but from the embarrassment of not understanding it immediately. No wonder the other Hufflepuff kept going. She had even made an entire list in case Cordelia didn’t react to the first few. “I-I have a q-question,” she started, unsure if Jamie was going to speak up and let out another line, or if she had enough time to actually formulate her question. “W-Why are y-you u-using them on m-m-me?”[OOC: plz make her squirm.]

Jamie was slightly mesmerized by the spinning canisters, now that she had noticed them. At first, she had been so focused on her pickup lines that she hadn’t actually bothered to look at the blonde in front of her. The first canister falling had been what had alerted her to their presence at all, but now the lazy spinning, the dipping and dancing – it really was hypnotizing, and it took all of Jamie’s effort not to forget about what she was going to do in favor of just staring. Cordelia finally seemed to catch on to what was happening, if the color of her cheeks was anything to go by. Cordie said she had a question, and Jamie nodded, keeping her lips clamped shut. She was determined to get through all of her lines, damn it! And Cordelia asked her a question that was a perfect transition. "Did you survive Avada Kedavra? ‘Cause you’re drop dead gorgeous." Technically, it wasn’t an answer to the question, because it was just another pickup line, but if Cordelia wanted it to be an answer, it certainly could be. She was really pretty, after all, if not a bit socially awkward. In Jamie’s mind, it wasn’t a question of why someone would want to ask Cordelia on a date, but why not. Sure, she wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and getting her to agree to a date in the first place would take nothing short of a miracle, if Jamie had gotten her read on the other Hufflepuff correct, but Cordelia could be a catch. She was sweet, funny, pretty, and she had a hobby outside of school or bullying other people. It was everything anyone sane looked for in a perfect companion! Except for Jamie – Jamie looked for people who wrote excellent letters and had an air of mystery about her. But it took a special kind of person to date a werewolf, anyways, and Cordelia probably didn’t have enough mettle to actually deal with Jamie as a romantic partner. The Hufflepuff just hoped that her housemate would begin to see this as the teasing it was and have a little more fun with it.

@jamie At least Jamie was one of those people that would let her talk, and get out what she needed to say. Or that’s what Cordelia had initially thought. She had really hoped for a straight answer, but at this point she probably would have been better off conceding defeat. There wasn’t just another pick-up line, but it was a killer one. Figuratively and literally. Jamie got style points for that one. Unfortunately thinking about the line even more didn’t help with her skin tone, and this time she could tell it was actually bright red. Apparently on top of being quiet and shy, she was also bashful. That was a new one. Lily was really the only person she could recall ever complimenting her to that extent, and that was probably with more serious intent than what Jamie was doing. Or was it? Was she just a test subject or was Jamie really going after her? She had been hoping that the answer to her question would figure that out, but instead got the drop dead gorgeous comment. All she could do was stare back at the older girl, mouth slightly agape as she tried to figure out what to say next. This was far more difficult that she had thought it would be.
Somewhat frustrated with her inability to figure out what it was that Jamie was actually trying to get across to her, Cordelia finally let all the film canisters drop to the ground. It was too hard trying to concentrate on them and what was going on in front of her at the same time. Each one hit the ground, one after the other, and she placed her wand down on her lap, looking back up at Jamie at the same time. “I-I’m s-sorry…I d-don’t understand s-still.”

Jamie let out a soft noise of shock when Cordelia let all of her film canisters fall to the floor. The other girl had been so intent on keeping in the air, even when she had been flustered by Jamie and flushed in the face. The fact that they dropped was a wake up call of sorts for Jamie, and she knew that she needed to start taking this conversation seriously, instead of just joking and shooting off pickup lines. She was excited for the prospect of getting through the entire list, but no amount of excitement was going to be enough if she accidentally hurt Cordelia's feelings, and since the other girl wasn't understanding, Jamie was going to take a break from her teasing. "What I'm saying is that I like you, Cord." Jamie said with a shrug. She didn't like her romantically (or at least she didn't think she did), but Jamie wasn't good at showing her affections in non mushy gushy ways. "And I hope that one day someone will love you, like, romantically. If you want that, that is." If Cordie wasn't ever interested in romance, then that was fine too, but the point stood that Jamie wanted Cord to know that she was loved. Jamie took a few steps so she was right in front of the other girl, and pressed a quick kiss to her cheek.

@jamie Cordelia found herself blinking a lot as she process what Jamie was saying to her. This wasn’t a pick-up line. At least she didn’t think it was. Maybe she had misheard the other Hufflepuff. Because that wasn’t something anyone other than her parents ever said to her. And maybe Lily. But the Gryffindor said that to literally everyone, so Cordelia knew not to take it to heart as a romantic confession of love. Jamie was different though. The older Hufflepuff had just said that she liked Cordelia. What did that even mean? Friendship like? Love like? Liked her company? It wasn’t like she had done anything prior to this to earn any of that, at least not that she could recall. To add to that, all she had done throughout this conversation was spin film canisters around in a circle while hopelessly trying to understand what Jamie was trying to say. This last statement was easily the hardest one yet though. “L-L-Like m-me?” Somehow she had finally managed words out, which was almost impossible considering the millions of thoughts and scenarios going through her head. While she didn’t talk much, it wasn’t like she was ignorant of how these things went. People tended to forget that the quiet girl in the corner was a person too and went about their business regardless. That and muggle films did a pretty decent job showcasing everything…
Jamie continued on about how she hoped that one day someone would love Cordelia romantically, and that only helped to create more questions than answers. What was Jamie trying to say here? Going back through the series of events, Cordelia came up with a list: first, Jamie had approached her and started using pick-up lines. Funny ones, some a little more intense than others. Second, she confessed that she liked Cordelia, or something of that sort. That was still a little hazy. Third, Jamie said she hoped someone would love her one day. In her mind, that somewhat contradicted the confession she had just received. And fourth…fourth was Jamie walking up to her and kissing her. On the cheek. Cordelia sat still on the couch, only managing to stare up at the other Hufflepuff. She still didn’t understand. Why couldn’t she figure it out?

Jamie was beginning to think that she had royally screwed everything up, all for the sake of using a bunch of crappy pickup lines that she had found in a library book. The Hufflepuff took a deep breath as she tried to organize her thoughts into an explanation she could give Cordelia, without making it seem like the other girl was naïve or babyish or like Jamie was a bully. She had just thought that this was going to be fun! Jamie had gotten in over her head, she thought to herself as she chewed on her lip. “I like you.” Jamie confirmed. “You know…you’re a good friend, and you’re nice to people, and if you were into girls as much as you were into photography, I could see us having dated or something.” Okay, that wasn’t the best explanation that she could give, but it hit on the most important points: Jamie really did think that Cordie was a good person, but this wasn’t intended as any sort of romantic overture. “Long story short, people don’t appreciate you as much as they ought to.” How often did the world get a person like Cordelia Smith, who was even-tempered and nice and genuinely a good person? Not very often. And sometimes people took advantage of Cordie’s willingness to follow through with just about anything. Jamie’s own little experiment had shown that Cordie didn’t really know how to say no to people, and Jamie wondered if it was wrong to feel protective of the other girl. “And I tried to show my appreciation in an unorthodox manner.” That was a stretch, since that hadn’t been Jamie’s intention to begin with, but it was a kind of acceptable excuse, and it would make things a lot less awkward for both of them…so maybe this could all end well soon. cordelia regan smith

@jamie Somewhere along the line, Cordelia was starting to think that maybe she was the one being confusing here. She knew her rather brief and awkward responses, if they could even be called that to begin with, were tough to understand sometimes, especially with the addition of the stutter. That had been a point of contention throughout her schooling, and the quiet, stuttered out responses were more than a challenge for most people. The look on Jamie’s face was starting to make Cordelia feel like this was just another one of those situations. She had somehow managed to flip her confusion back around to the other Hufflepuff. It wasn’t the first time this had happened either. At least that’s what she believed had happened. Jamie’s confirmation that she liked Cordelia, and then the further explanation why started to make some sense. Maybe the confusion that she had read into while observing Jamie was actually her way of thinking; mentally processing things. Cordelia knew her habit when it came to that was to look away from whoever she was talking to. That was sometimes brought up as being rude, but it was difficult to think when someone was staring back at her. This situation was somewhat of a good example of that.
The explanation behind the previous comment helped out slightly, though she still wasn’t sure what Jamie was trying to get at. Cordelia was pretty sure she wasn’t interested in girls more than as friends, though that had never been a thought that had crossed her mind before. She understood the comparison that the older girl was trying to make though. Whenever anything was used as an example against photography it became way easier for her to process. The fact that Jamie didn’t think she was appreciated enough was a nice sentiment, but Cordelia didn’t know how to tell her that she was perfectly fine without appreciation from others. The better way to put it was that she didn’t know how to tell her without making it sound rude. Obviously receiving appreciation for something she did, like excellence in charms or through her photography, left her with a better feeling than comments said out of habit. If she needed those to thrive, than she would be more outgoing. That said, she understood what Jamie was getting at. Kind of. At least in the unorthodox way that she mentioned. “Th-Thanks,” she smiled. Hopefully that would show Jamie that she did actually appreciate the sentiments. “S-Sorry for n-not understanding r-right away…I have t-trouble m-making s-sense of s-stuff when it happens f-fast.”

After the train wreck that was the conversation and her explanation, Jamie was glad that it ended with Cordelia thanking her. “It’s not really something I need thanking for.” Jamie said. She felt guilty accepting any thanks, especially since she had obviously made Cordelia feel awkward and a little confused. She didn’t want to be thanked for something that actually made someone feel worse because they felt like the owed her the thanks. Jamie was half-tempted to just turn tail and run away, but she wasn’t going to be able to avoid Cordelia until graduation, so running away now would just make any conversation they had after that point even more awkward. Cordie apologized for not understanding sooner, and Jamie shook her head, her blonde hair flying around her face in a whirlwind because she was moving so quickly. “It’s my fault. I wasn’t exactly clear about my intentions.” It had changed from what was supposed to be a lighthearted ribbing to something like an appreciation session, and Jamie wasn’t sure how she felt about that. Why couldn’t things ever just be simple? “In the future, I’ll try to go slower.” Jamie promised. Or just avoid harebrained schemes like this altogether – that seemed like the better way to go about it. “Do you, uh, want to talk more, or go back to your…” Jamie made a twirling motion with her hands to mimic the film canisters that Cordelia had been twirling earlier. She was all too eager to give her housemate something else to do so she could make her escape with a minimal amount of kicking herself, but Jamie wasn’t sure if that was going to happen.

@jamie Now Cordelia was confused again. Was thanking Jamie the wrong thing to do? She had been complimented on a few things after all. At least, that’s what she had thought had happened. This was all a mess, and it wasn’t getting any better as it went on. She thought it had in the last few minutes, but maybe she had been too quick to assume that. But then Jamie’s second comment, about not being clear in the first place, made a little more sense to her. The other Hufflepuff definitely had come across as rather odd at first, but Cordelia had managed to understand it in the end. Kind of. So maybe it wasn’t her fault for misunderstanding the whole thing in the first place. Getting asked rhetorical questions and pick-up lines out of the blue like that would probably confuse anyone initially. She probably wasn’t alone in the boat. “N-No harm d-done,” she responded, unsure of what else to say. It wasn’t like Jamie had intentionally tried to confuse her like that. These kinds of things happened. Obviously not the confessions of love thing, but her getting confused at others and vice-versa. She probably would have understood it better if it was the former.
Jamie’s question about talking more left Cordelia at a crossroads. She could either say yes, and they could try and move on from that awkward exchange, no thanks to her own flaws and in which there would probably be another misunderstanding on her part, or she could tell Jamie to move along. Being left alone now to play with her spell again would be nice, but she also knew she didn’t have the heart nor the words to tell Jamie to bugger off. Cordelia looked back and forth between the empty film canisters, which were now unmoving on the ground, and Jamie. She really did want to keep practicing that spell. “I-If y-you w-wouldn’t m-m-mind?” she finally decided, hoping Jamie would understand. There were plenty of other times to talk, and right now she wanted to get back to her work.

No harm done. That was perhaps the best answer Jamie could have gotten to her question, and her shoulders sagged a little in relief when Cordelia accepted her sort-of apology… which didn’t actually include the words ‘I’m sorry’. Jamie bounced on the balls of her feet, hoping to bolt out of the situation as soon as humanly possible. She normally did well with social interaction, but once she made a faux pas, Jamie was eager to leave. And she had made more than one faux pas in this conversation with Cordelia. The Hufflepuff studied her housemate while the other girl tried to decide whether or not she wanted to talk any more, crossing her fingers (literally) that the answer would be no. Luckily, Cordelia seemed just as willing to be done with this whole thing as Jamie was. “I don’t mind at all!” Jamie chirped, her voice slightly forced. Since she was already on the balls of her feet it wasn’t difficult to begin walking forwards, towards the entrance to the girl’s dormitory. “I’ll see you later, Cord! Have a good time with your thing!” She rushed out before diving through the door and into the solitude of silence.
