The last two weeks had not exactly been the greatest in Viola's life. In fact, they had been...arguably the worst. They hadn't experienced a lot of bad things in their life, so Viola felt pretty secure in saying that their girlfriend going insane, burning them to a crisp, and then going insane again, to the point she had to be restrained...was the worst thing that had happened to them. It was strange to think to think of it in those terms, especially because Viola didn't want to be a victim in this entire situation, but now that the thought had crossed their mind, Viola felt really, really heavy. And they didn't like that. What they liked even less was that, after the two weeks from hell, they had hardly seen their girlfriend. Viola and Maria had been two ships passing in the night, seeing each other but never really having the time to speak since Viola had been released from the hospital wing. Viola wasn't certain, but they would definitely bet money on Maria still blaming herself for the entire situation, and Viola couldn't handle it. They just wanted Maria to know that they didn't blame her. If anyone else did, then Viola would shut them up with a fist to the jaw, because none of this was Maria. Maybe it was the Maria that she liked the world to see, the crazy girl on fire, but it wasn't the real one, the one that Viola had seen. The one that Viola loved. Viola had gone on a walk around the grounds in hopes of clearing their head, but they were also half-hoping that Maria would show up somewhere so that they could talk to her, and hug her, and let her know that she was not alone.

Maria had been having a very, very rough few weeks. She'd endured three days of pure, psychological hell. Hallucinating some of the deepest fears, constantly bombarded by disturbing and horrifying images. Half of the time she'd actually had to be restrained and periodically sedated. For her own, and other's safety. And then? They'd just stopped. Just like they'd come. So sudden it was shocking. Of course it was tough convincing the Hospital wing staff that, and they'd kept her restrained another 24 hours before finally daring to undo the restraints. During those days one of the tests had finally come back positive with traces of a substance in her bloodstream. Somehow, someway, Maria had come in contact with a seriously powerful Hallucinative. Intentional, accidental, no one knew. Or even what it was. It was out of her system before they could do further testing. Either way, after several more days, and countless tests they finally released Maria from the hospital wing.
That was a week ago. And in that week Maria... hadn't really been herself. She was still trying to understand what happened to her after all. As she gathered her thoughts, and tried to regain at least a little normalcy back in her life she'd pretty much stayed clear of everyone she knew. Brushed them off if t hey tried to talk to her. She just needed time to think. But already the extrovert in Maria was sick of this self imposed isolation. Maria, despite not wanting to let people get close to her also didn't like being alone. It was why she took on so many lovers. The obvious choice would be to go find one of them right now, to try and get back to normal as quickly as possible, but she wasn't actually much in the mood. (As insane as that sounded.) In fact, she wanted one of those few people she actually trusted to be around. At Hogwarts that currently meant only two individuals. Elias and Viola. She didn't really like the idea of going to find either of them, since they'd both witnessed her total and complete psychotic break...
It seemed fated had other plans for her though, as there was Viola now. Maria had been sitting on one of the low stone walls, chucking rocks towards the Whomping Willow to see if it might react. It did, sometimes, batting at the stone projectile as if it were a pesky wasp. Upon spotting Viola, Maria immediately stopped throwing rocks, dropping the last remaining one to the ground. Maria remained absolutely silent as her dark eyes focused intensely on Viola. Maria always seemed to have some sort of intensity to her gaze, even in times when she felt like absolute shit, like now.

Viola knew that it wasn’t possible for someone to just pop into existence in front of them – at least not on the Hogwarts grounds – but they hadn’t been paying enough attention in their wandering to realize that they were approaching the Whomping Willow, or another person. Viola not paying attention was a rarity in and of itself, but the fact that they hadn’t noticed Maria – the one person they always noticed…had never happened before. Viola wondered if that spoke to their own mental state following the events that had transpired or if they were just (finally) having an off day. That didn’t seem like something that they ought to dwell on, especially now, since Maria was staring at them like they were trying to set them on fire or something. Viola fidgeted uncomfortable at that thought. Being set on fire once was enough for anyone in a lifetime.
When they were within a few meters of Maria and she could see their face clearly, Viola quirked their lips in a smile, making a beeline to sit down on the stone ledge that Maria was perched on. “Fancy seeing you here.” They commented, as if it wasn’t at all strange to find their girlfriend in such an isolated location, having apparently spent the past few minutes throwing rocks at the tree, if the semi-circle of pebbles at the edge of the Willow’s reach were anything to go by. “Wanna make out?” Viola wasn’t going to lie and say that the thought of using reverse psychology on Maria hadn’t crossed their mind, and that this wasn’t, at least in some part, a ploy to get Maria to talk about her feelings. On the other hand, though, Viola was still a little freaked out by how hesitant Maria had been to touch them in the hospital wing, and they wanted to make sure all vestiges of that fear, on both of their parts, was wiped away, and there was nothing like a good make out session to do the trick.

Maria didn't know yet if she wanted to go to her partner, or call out to them, or wait and see what they'd do.... Or even ignore them. Okay, maybe not ignore. She'd never be able to ignore Viola. Not in a million years. Somehow she seemed to settle on the 'wait and see what happened' option. After all, she still wasn't sure how Viola was feeling about the whole... well burning thing. Aside from the conversation in the Hospital wing the day after, Maria hadn't had a chance to really talk to her partner. But they were both a little occupied. Hopefully they'd filled Viola in on what had been happening to Maria (at least what they could piece together), so at least Viola wouldn't think Maria had just been going crazy for the hell of it. Something had been manipulating her.
Soon though, Viola moved towards her, and took the spot on the stone wall next to her. That first comment was enough to finally break Marias sullen mood and slow grin started to appear. And then they had to ask that question, and Maria started laughing. Oh merlin, she'd needed that! Just a good laugh. It was enough to break her current vow of silence and she reached out to drape her arms around Viola's shoulder, the one farthest from her, as she rested her forehead against Viola's closer shoulder and just laughed for several minutes. It really wasn't funny, at all. For Maria, that was a pretty legit question, one she'd take in a heart beat normally. But today? It just made her feel normal, and normal was good.

Viola wasn’t sure how Maria was going to react to either of their comments, but total silence, followed by laughter was not on the top of their list. In fact, it wasn’t even on their list, because Maria wasn’t normally silent around them, especially when anything resembling physical affection was on the table. Instead of responding to their offer to make out by actually doing the act, Maria had fallen out in laughter. There were several good things about this, the first being that Maria was actually touching them, casually, like she had never even been afraid of them at all. The second good thing was that Viola did not have an ego, especially not one that could be bruised when their girlfriend laughed at the idea of kissing them. The third (and final) good thing was that now, when Maria begged to kiss them later, Viola would have an excuse to tease her and say no. Things couldn’t really get any better than that. “So, should I pursue a career as a standup comedian or are you just really punchy today?” Viola asked when they thought that Maria was almost done laughing.

Maria laughed longer than she'd expected, not moving from that casual embrace she'd made without even thinking, forehead still on Viola's shoulder. Eventually though the fit of laughter started to subside and Viola seemed to pick up on it, speaking up once more. Slowly her laughter finally stopped and she lifted her head off Viola's shoulders, shaking her head just a little to get the hair from her eyes. "I don't think most people would like your sense of humor." She answered at all. Viola was a rather dry person, and didn't beat around the bus. A trait that, obviously, some people didn't appreciate. She did feel 'punchy' though. Tended to happen when you're thoughts were constantly consumed by the insanity of the last few weeks. And now she was just waiting to see what her grandparents might do in retaliation. No doubt send another howler. Not because she'd gone crazy, but because no doubt they'd been told about her 'partner'. Her grandparents were quite tradition, and were currently trying to marry her off as soon as she graduated (they seemed to think she'd actually come 'home', despite being an adult and no longer having to live by their rules.) They didn't know about her... romantic antics at school, let alone Maria's preference (or rather lack there of.). She'd definitely get an earful if they didn't die of a heart attack.
One of her hands left Viola's shoulder and wrapped around the back of their neck as her head lowered back to Viola's shoulder once more. "Definitely 'punchy' though." Not really her usual word choice, but it described how she felt pretty well.

Maria said that most people wouldn’t like their sense of humor, and Viola snorted, shaking their head a little. “I don’t care what most people think anyways.” They said, running their fingers through Maria’s hair idly as they said so. Being in a job that required people to be looking at them all the time probably wouldn’t be Viola’s cup of tea. Their mother would probably cry with joy if she knew that they were so much as considering performance, even in jest, but Viola’s mother fell under the ‘most people’ of whose opinion Viola couldn’t care less about. The unspoken words, which Viola hoped Maria heard anyways, what they did care about what the part-Veela thought. She didn’t seem to have any problems with Viola’s sense of humor, though, at least none that they could see.
When their girlfriend moved her hand to the back of their neck, Viola leaned into it a little. Their hand immediately moved back to Maria’s hand, continuing to stroke softly, wondering if they were trying to calm Maria or just be close to her. “I can deal with punchy.” Viola said with a smirk. “You still haven’t answered my question though.” They pointed out. Maria wasn’t going to get out of the kissing just by bursting into laughter. It was contrary to Viola’s normal role in the relationship – normally they were not the one doing the chasing – but it was worth the shot, especially since if Maria did try to kiss them, they were going to dodge.

Maria started to grin at that little snort and comment of Viola's. While their attitude and Maria's were polar opposites at time, Viola definitely had attitude, and it was one of the most attractive traits of theirs. "What about what I think?" She teased, though she knew Viola would probably take the bait and take a shot at Maria's ego when they answered. They always did, but Maria secretly liked it. It was entertaining.
She felt Viola lean in closer, and she closed her eyes, just enjoying the comfort of being this close to Viola. It felt like it'd been so long since they'd had this sort of contact. Maria, being a highly physical person, had missed it. She'd missed all the physical contact while going crazy, but she'd kept her distance out of fear that she might lose control again. Now though... She knew she wasn't going to spontaneously catch on fire. "You better be able to deal with it." She answered quietly, still teasing a little. Though at the demand for an answer, Maria finally pulled her head away from Viola's shoulder and opened her eyes so she could stare at her partner. Viola was never the one to initiate that sort of thing. Maria practically had to force Viola to make out with her (not always, but sometimes). So whether Viola honestly wanted to make out, or if they were saying it to try and help Maria feel better... She wasn't sure. She didn't say anything for several moments, until she leaned back into Viola. Not to kiss them though. Instead she... was hugging them. Her hand around the back of Viola's neck stayed firmly there while the other moved to wrap around Viola's waist and tightly hold them. "Just let me enjoy you being here first." She whispered. Maria had let all her defenses down around Viola some time ago. Viola was one of the only people (there were a few others, but not many) that she let herself be truly and totally honest. And so, while that sort of sentimentally honest answer might be unusual for Maria in general it wasn't for when she was with Viola.

Of course Maria had to ask the one question that Viola had expected her to. Maria was great at reading subtext, but she was even better at forcing people to say what they wanted to leave as just subtext. “Depends on the day of the week, if I’m being honest.” They retorted drily. If Maria wasn’t smart enough to know that Viola caring about their opinion wasn’t variable in the slightest, then maybe they needed to reconsider this whole relationship thing, because they thought they were being rather obvious about it. (Then again, Viola’s obvious was secretive to some, given their nature…so could they really blame Maria if she was confused? And Viola still wasn’t convinced that their girlfriend was confused in the first place.)
“I think if I can deal with fire monster Maria, I can deal with punchy Maria.” Viola responded. Whether or not they had actually dealt with Maria when she was being a fire monster was left to be contested, but the point still stood. Viola had seen Maria at her worse, and they weren’t going to complain when she was better. Different, maybe, but definitely better, since no one was in danger of being flambéed. Maria seemed to have caught on to the fact that there was something strange about Viola’s demands, staring at them for a bit before leaning back. Viola wasn’t sure what they were expecting, but a hug was not it. One of the joys of dating Maria was that there was nothing predictable about life, ever. Maria whispered to them, and Viola’s arms reflexively tightened around their girlfriend at the words. “When will you learn that I will always be here for you, my Maria?” They asked, voice low and slow. They had walked through hell, fire and all, for Maria, and Viola wasn’t going to stop walking through hell for Maria unless she asked them to – or, more likely, forced them to. “If we go down, then we go down together.” Viola’s voice was a little louder, but still slow and firm when they said those words, turning their head the slightest bit so they could press their lips against the shell of Maria’s ear.

There was that sassy response Maria was expecting. That typical Viola answer that was more insult then anything else. Of course Maria knew better then to believe it. It was just fun to get those sort of answers out of them. It was part of Viola's charm. "As long as one of those days is Saturday." She teased a little with a smirk.
Maria almost twitched when Viola said 'fire monster', remembering what she'd done to Viola. She hadn't seen the burns immediately after, only seeing Viola after the healing process had begun. But from the state of the healing skin and what she'd been told... It'd been pretty bad. Maria lifted a hand to gently stroke Viola's cheek. "I promise you won't see her again." The 'fire monster Maria'. Never again. She'd spoken firmly, hoping that she sounded confident in the answer. In reality though there was a fear, that it all might come back. That she see things again. If it ever did happen... She hoped Viola wouldn't be nearby. While it had been the most terrifying time of her life, and being alone had made it a hundred times worse she also didn't want Viola to ever be hurt by her hand (or rather fire) again.
Maria's arms tightened around Viola as they spoke, saying that the would be here for her and that if they went down they'd go together. Her eyes squeezed shut and if it was even possible her hug became even firmer, as if to prove that Viola wasn't going anywhere. Between their position and her eyes behind closed she couldn't see Viola, but she didn't care. She could feel them. Their heart beat. Each breath being drawn and released. and then that kiss near her ear. "I thought I was losing my mind, Viola... I.... I've never been so scared in my life. And now.... Now I'm terrified that it's going to happen again." Maria almost choked on her words, fighting to get her thoughts out, the ones she knew Viola was waiting for. "I feel like it's going to happen again and this time it'll break me." Maria had thought she was strong before this. Thought nothing could ever break her. How wrong she was. She'd never felt so powerless, and it was almost crippling to think it might happen again.

Viola rolled their eyes when Maria said they were allowed to have varying opinions of her opinion, as long as they cared about what she thought on Saturdays. “That can be arranged.” They said drily.
Viola softened a little when Maria stroked their cheek, promising that Viola would never have to see the fire monster version of her again. Viola didn’t know what to say what they wanted to say – that they honestly didn’t care if they saw the fire monster again, as long as Maria wasn’t ever in such an altered state. That was, if Maria chose to throw fireballs at them of her own volition, Viola would gladly take it. “I dealt with her once. If it ever comes down to it, I can deal with her again.” Viola said, trying not to sound overconfident but wanting Maria to know that they didn’t fear her. The first night, they had been freaked out, but not afraid.
There was something about the way that Maria was hugging them now that made Viola think this was much more than a hug. They were two people, lost in different ways, clinging to each other in hopes that they were going to be able to find themselves, or each other, if they just held on hard enough. The overwhelming scent of Maria – smoke and fire and ash – washed over Viola as they continued to hold their girlfriend, and they let it calm their breathing and slow their heart. They listened to what Maria said, about thinking that she was losing her mind, and Viola’s heart nearly broke in two. They just wanted to make Maria feel better, and they didn’t know how. All they could do was keep gripping onto Maria like they were hanging on to dear life, and let her know that she was not going to be alone. It was only when Maria said that she was afraid she was going to break that Viola knew what to say. “My Maria, you do not need to be afraid to break. If you do, I will put you back together again.” Viola had spent the past however many months trying to figure Maria out. They had studied their girlfriend, her quirks and eccentricities and strengths and flaws, and they knew her like the back of their hand. Maria needn’t fear breaking, and even if that was the only thing that Viola could promise her, they hoped it was good enough.

Maria peered into Viola's eyes for several silent seconds, as if searching them for... something, her fingers having just pulled away from that gentle stroke. The same fingers that had burned Viola so viciously only a few weeks ago. "I don't want you to have to deal with that. I wont hurt people I care about." Had Maria ever admitted aloud that she cared about Viola? Possibly, she couldn't remember. Either way, right now it seemed to be the closest Maria could get to the L word.
Maria clung to Viola tightly, refusing to release them or loosen her embrace even in the slightest. Those three days... They'd been..... Honestly Maria was at a lose for words to describe how awful it had been, and very rarely was Maria unable to find a word. She spoke multiple languages, which gave her access to a plethora of expressions that didn't exist in other languages. And yet none of them could sum up how she'd felt. They made it sound so easy. Like if she broke they could just piece her back together like a puzzle. The idea, that it was so easy, was reassuring. But it didn't passive that fear. Viola didn't know what she'd seen. Didn't know what had been haunting her for so long. Memories that she'd tried to buried, things she'd suppressed to a deep part of herself in hopes that they would disappear eventually. Things she'd shared with no one else. Not even Elias. (Things that she had shared in her insane state but had no recollection of.) Despite not remembering the days well, she remembered what she'd seen clear as day. Every time she closed her eyes she saw them all again. "I am afraid, Viola..." She whispered, wishing desperately that she wasn't. "What if I'm still hallucinating and none of this is real?" What if she'd wake up in a few minutes, back in the hospital wing? Was this reality? Or simply another intricate hallucination?

Maria said that she didn’t want Viola to have to deal with the fiery side of her, and they wished that they could make her understand that even if they didn’t want that, either, they were more than willing to. Viola didn’t want to love anyone by half; if loving Maria meant loving her when she was on fire, then Viola was going to love Maria when she was on fire. Picking and choosing the parts of someone to love was just idiotic. Viola paused a little when Maria said that she wouldn’t hurt people she cared about. That was about the closest to a confession of love that they were probably going to get from Maria, and they wanted to savor it.
Maria was afraid. Maria was afraid, and Viola wasn’t sure what to do. They had tried to reassure her that there was always going to be someone there, that there wasn’t a part of her that she could lose that wouldn’t be able to be recovered. And when Maria said that she thought that her life wasn’t real…Viola damn near broke. They took a deep, steadying breath so that when they spoke, their voice didn’t shake. “What can I do to prove to you that this is not a dream?” There had to be something that they could do to make this seem less like a hallucination and more like a reality. Viola just wanted to make things better, but everything that they thought of had the potential to blow up in their face. They wanted to know what Maria thought, what would make her believe it. “Anything you want, Maria. Anything. Because this is real, and I am real, and I will not stop until you are sure of that.” In the end, this was all for Maria, and Viola should have been embarrassed by the lengths they were willing to go to make their girlfriend less scared. They weren’t, though, because love was stupid and made people risk their hearts for people that had already burned them before.

Maria hated being afraid. She hated admitting it even more. Even to someone she trusted whole heartedly. Hell, she didn't like admitting she trusted someone that much. And yet, she was, and had admitted, all of those things. But Viola made Maria feel and admit many things, both good and bad. As much as she hated feeling vulnerable, she also... liked having someone like Viola around. Someone who she could let in. Because heaven knew Maria was so secretive and closed off she needed people that she could let in.
Her eyes were closed as she held on to Viola, as if to convince herself they were there. What do they do to prove to her this was real? Maria didn't respond, just turned her head so her face was buried into Viola's shoulder. If only she knew. She wished she knew, desperately. Viola continued to speak, about anything she wanted to help convince her that this, and especially they, were real. If she'd been in a different mood this would have been a huge opportunity for her. And she would have jumped at it. She wasn't though. Instead, she found herself asking for something that she never would have thought. Something that terrified her, but she also knew would never happen in her nightmarish terrors. It was a different kind of fear, and the only thing she knew that was absolutely opposite her deepest fear. "I don't want to be alone, Viola." She whispered against Viola's shoulder, pausing for a moment as she tried to decide if she should really continue with her thought. "Say it again. What you said in the Greenhouse." She couldn't even bring herself to actually say the three words herself. And as much as she didn't want to hear them, she knew she needed to hear them. Because only those words wouldn't exist in her nightmares of abandonment.

Seeing Maria like this was strange. Normally she surprised Viola, but in a way that was a mix of annoyance and amusement. In this conversation, Maria had just saddened (and yes, surprised) Viola with how much she was afraid of losing her grip on reality. Viola had never thought their girlfriend to be particularly entrenched in reality in the first place, but it obviously meant a lot to her. But the next thing that Maria said was surprising in a way that…wasn’t bad. It still wasn’t good, but Viola felt a flutter of hope in their chest. Maria said that she didn’t want to be alone, and Viola wanted desperately to tell her that she wasn’t alone. That flutter of hope quickly morphed into something much more violent. Their heart was thudding against their ribs and their lungs felt like they were going to explode, because…this was not what they had expected. Not even in the same universe as what they had expected, and Viola wondered for a moment if they were the one who was losing their grip on reality, because there was no way that Maria would actually ask to hear those words. Love terrified her, and she wasn’t even able to say the words herself, not even to ask Viola to say them. But Viola had promised anything, and anything they would give, especially when it was something as mundane as saying the words that they had been feeling for quite some time now, but had kept holding back because they didn’t want Maria to feel pressure to say them back. “I love you, Maria.” The words came easier this time around, and Viola wondered if the omission of the word ‘my’ had been any part of that. “And I will keep loving you, because you took this world, this stupid, fascinating world, and you set it on fire.” In every way imaginable, Maria had set Viola on fire, and it was impossible not to love someone who did that, who changed the world like that. It was terrifying, the way that Viola burned after being nothing but embers for their whole life. The brief memory that fire always ended with ashes flickered across Viola’s mind, but they couldn’t bring themself to care. They had now, and now was bright and burning that even when the ashes and the cold and the dark came, they would remember the fire and the warmth and brightness that was loving Maria da Silva Povoa.
