It was the first weekend in February, which meant that Poe was visiting Hogwarts. He had considered telling Spike that he was coming and making a day of it, but after some consideration, Poe decided he didn't want to have to explain his entire purpose for visiting and reveal that he was an Animagus. The security that he had had to go through was different than it had been before, probably due to the fact that the head had changed. Poe was rather glad that Professor McGonagall hadn't seen him, or she probably would have commented on how scruffy his beard was and how he had dark circles under his eyes. Poe was beginning to look like a legitimate poet, and he didn't know if he liked the whole artsy-bohemian look. Maybe he'd need to shave that night...
In any case, Poe had found a secluded space on the grounds on which to have his lesson with Grey, and had sent the boy a short, simple letter with directions. He didn't think it'd take long for the owl to reach the castle, but depending on where Grey was, it was possible it would take the Gryffindor some time to get down to where Poe was located, so he settled down on the grass, eyes forward as he tried to focus and begin to draft what he was going to say to Grey.

@poet This was a strange day. Grey was actually excited about something, about learning magic no less, and it had been enough that he decided to get a good night’s sleep the day before. And it worked. Motivation was a scary thing. He was conflicted in the effectiveness in it, because he had come to the conclusion years earlier that he worked better under high amounts of stress and exhaustion. Yet here he was, happily taking a letter off an owl with directions to where to meet Poe on the grounds so that he could start training to be an animagus. He had spent quite a few hours in the library reading up on the process of becoming one, and the biggest trick to it was that some people would go through all the steps and it still wouldn’t work. That would be a slight inconvenience, but he had faith in his abilities. Producing a patronus was also supposed to be a difficult task, and that had been simple for him, the same with most of the spells he had learned in Transfiguration over the last few years. Becoming an animagus was simply the next step in his studies.
Directions in hand, Grey made his way out of the castle and across the grounds. They weren’t difficult to follow, but the location they were supposed to meet at was way out of the way of where students would typically go. That was probably because Poe had mentioned in their letters that he was an animagus as well, and the general public knowing that wasn’t a good idea. Security reasons, or something like that. After a few minutes of walking, Grey made it to the supposed location and spotted a man sitting on the grass. Walking around to the front of him, Grey realized that he had seen this guy around the castle last term. Except he had a lot more facial hair this time. “Poe?” he asked, glancing down at the paper the directions were on, as if that had the answer to his question.

Meditating (which was more like thinking silently) on the grass really amped up the whole ‘weird poet’ side of the former Auror, and he was relieved when he heard footsteps behind him, signaling that his charge was approaching. Poe didn’t turn around, just relaxed his shoulders a little bit and waited for Grey to come around his front. When his name was spoken, Poe nodded, smiling easily at the younger man and standing up quickly so that he could extend his hand. “You must be Grey, then.” He said, looking the Gryffindor up and down. It was strange to finally have a face to put to all of the stories he had heard from Rai and Finn (and from Claire, though those stories were different) and to see the person who he had been corresponding with since January. If Poe was honest, Grey looked different than what he had expected, though the poet didn’t know how he expected the Gryffindor to look in the first place, so why he looked different, he didn’t know.
Poe wanted to begin immediately, so he didn’t waste any time in beginning to start his lesson of sorts. “You said your Patronus is a crow, right?” He asked, though he had just reread the letter that stated as such, so he could be sure. “Can you cast that for me?” A person’s ability to cast a Patronus could serve as a sort of magical litmus test, and while Poe was sure Grey wouldn’t have taken on such a challenge if he wasn’t sure of his magical skills, Poe wasn’t familiar with him at all, and seeing how the younger man cast spells, especially difficult ones, would be a good jumping off point for how Poe could teach Grey how to become an Animagus. If Poe was satisfied with the Patronus, then he could also maybe prod a little more into what memory Grey had used to cast it, and thereby see what motivated him, and what made him happy. It was a rough plan at best, but Poe found that he enjoyed things the most when he dived in headfirst.

@poet The man’s acknowledgement meant that he had to be Poe. Grey reached out and shook his hand as it was offered. He was definitely a lot scruffier than the last time he recalled seeing the ex-Auror. Apparently that’s what quitting your job did. From what he recalled, Poe also trained Finn and Rai, at least initially, and then Claire had somewhat taken over that job. Grey realized that the man in front of him probably knew more about him than he did about himself. The aforementioned three weren’t exactly known to keep their mouths shut about him if asked. At least Finn and Rai probably had nicer things to say about him. He was still on the fence about how Claire would react when asked about him. They were in that mutual agreement that they understood what had been going on with the other and that was that. There were far more pressing issues that each of them had to deal with anyways. “Nice to meet you,” he stated as he shook Poe’s hand.
Grey nodded his head as Poe asked him what his patronus was. They were jumping right into things weren’t they? Pulling his wand out of his pocket, he concentrated on happy thoughts, or whatever it was supposed to be to conjure a patronus. It had been a while since he had cast the spell; things had changed, surprisingly for the better. That made it that much easier. Incantation and wand flick in sync, the silver light emerged from the wand and formed into the crow that he was familiar with. The happy memory might have been a little more recent than his prior one had been, but that hadn’t changed the patronus at all. That was good. He kind of liked the crow. “Looks like it normally does. Any critiques?”

Poe was trying not to overanalyze things, especially since he already had a lot of impressions of Grey based on everything that he heard, but he had to admit that the young man’s handshake was good – firm, and not too awkwardly long. Even if Grey wasn’t what Poe had expected, he was still doing a fine job of making the former Auror not dislike him – though Poe didn’t dislike people often, so he didn’t know why that was a thought that crossed his mind. The Gryffindor didn’t seem to be fazed by Poe immediately jumping into the lesson, or at least didn’t show it if he was slightly surprised by the lesson beginning so abruptly. Poe studied Grey as the younger man concentrated, pleased to see that it didn’t take Grey long to find a happy thought to use. Some of his ex-trainees seemed to have trouble with that part of things, which Poe could understand. When things were going badly, like they had been for the past year, sometimes it could be hard to find a memory happy enough to use for the charm. When Grey asked if Poe had any critiques, the poet shook his head. It was a normal Patronus – bright silver and corporeal. It could be brighter, but Poe hadn’t seen an astoundingly bright Patronus in quite some time. “Nothing I couldn’t also say to myself.” Poe told Grey, hoping to acknowledge that there was always room for improvement, but not just for Grey. “If I may, I’m curious as to what memory you used to produce the Patronus. If you’re interested in making it stronger, selecting a different one might help with that end.” Grey probably didn’t want to make his Patronus any stronger, since he said the Patronus was on par with his normal caliber, but it was a way for Poe to stick his nose into things without seeming too suspicious, and he couldn’t help that he was curious about the part of Grey’s life that he wasn’t privy to via their letters.

@poet That meant it was a good one, right? Grey knew that sometimes others were surprised by the fact that he could conjure a Patronus; not everyone could after all. The added bonus of being categorized as a rather dry, boring person that needed sleep all the time apparently meant he was also completely void of happy thoughts. That wasn’t true. There were plenty of things that made him happy. Like coffee. Though that wasn’t exactly the kind of feeling or memory that he would use for a Patronus, let alone admit to anyone. He figured something like that could work, potentially, if it was with the right person and in the correct mindset. The Patronus was conjured through strong feelings and emotional memory. In that regard, virtually anything could bring one forth.
Poe seemed to want to know if picking a different memory would make the Patronus stronger. Grey didn’t think so. The one he had just used was different, more in the moment. Applicable to things as of late. It had room to grow. The old one had capped out where it was though, and he was positive that he’d never turn back to it again, unless this current one soured. “I think it has the chance to become something better, stronger,” Grey stated, keeping it vague on purpose. “But right now that’s all I can do.” His initial owls with Poe had been on that subject, about Rai. He didn’t want to make it seem like he had moved on as fast as he had. Except he had. At least he thought he had. There were a lot of things to figure out still, but the fact remained that he knew that the memory he used had potential to evolve into something more than it already was. “Do you need to see other spells too? Or was that just a way to see the potential of me being an animagus?” He had no clue how these things worked, or if there was even a correlation between the two, other than some animagi having the same forms as their Patronus.

Poe wondered what was going on in Grey’s head, that he thought that the answer to his question was going to satisfy the poet’s curiosity. He didn’t really answer the question at all, now that Poe thought of it – just said that whatever memory he used had a chance to become even better. At least, that was how Poe was choosing to interpret what the boy said. It was too bad that he was here to teach and not to gossip, Poe thought with a sigh. Maybe later he could do some poking around – he wondered if Grey’s little sister would like to have another rendezvous with the dog she had met before, and if she could be persuaded to talk a little about her brother’s love life… No, that probably wasn’t good idea, regrettably. “That’s good for now.” Poe reassured Grey. Most people couldn’t cast Patronuses, since they were such high-level magic, so the fact that the Gryffindor could cast one before even graduating was heartening, and spelled good things for his future, both in becoming and Animagus and otherwise. When asked if there was anything else that Poe needed to see, the Hufflepuff hesitated. “How about you show me your favorite Transfiguration spell, for kicks?” It was good that Grey was obviously a powerful wizard, but power could be unevenly distributed amongst the subjects, so seeing Grey’s Transfiguration aptitude separately was probably for the better. And, if he couldn’t know about Grey’s Patronus memory, at least he could learn a little bit more about the boy by seeing what his favorite spell was. Hopefully it wasn’t anything too embarrassing or loud, Poe thought with a smirk. It would be his luck that Grey’s favorite Transfiguration spell was changing mice into elephants or something conspicuous like that. Poe didn’t want to die by stampeding elephants – that would make for a horrible obituary.

@poet He wasn’t sure why he was holding his breath. Probably expected Poe to try and delve deeper into his thought process behind the Patronus. The scariest part about it all? Grey wasn’t even sure if that memory, or thought rather, was a possibility yet. It would be a nice one though. Grey was positive he wouldn’t forfeit the details of it until it became a reality, so for the time being it would be better if Poe backed off and moved onto other kinds of Transfiguration. Poe said it was fine though, hopefully getting the hint, and instead asked for his favorite spell. That was a difficult one. He could tell the man the one that had been used the most against him over the years; the colour changing charm. It didn’t help that his name fell perfectly on the colour spectrum. Grey was a shade as far as he was concerned, but that didn’t stop the jokes. Having clothes and personal belongings changed colours all the time had made relatively apt at switching them back, much to his torturers’ chagrin. They clearly messed with the wrong Gryffindor. Especially one that had taken an interest in Transfiguration at an early age.
“I think I have one,” Grey stated, stepping away from Poe and turning so that he could see the spell. “I’m better at conjuration spells, so this is one I’ve been practicing lately. It started out with just writing letters with it, but I think I can fully form a whip out of it.” Wand pointed away from both of them, he cast the Flagrate spell. The fiery rope whipped out of the wand tip as the motions finished, and Grey pulled it back, snapping it forward again like a certain adventurous muggle film figure. He had probably watched that movie one too many times. It may have been an influence for learning this spell. The rope scorched the ground where it struck, and he immediately reeled it back in as much as possible. He didn’t have it down pat yet, and the last thing he needed was it going out of control and lighting the entire grounds on fire. “It’s a work in progress I guess. I haven’t really found a practical reason for using it yet, but maybe someday,” he shrugged.

Grey said that he thought that he had a spell that he would classify as his favorite, and Poe nodded, gesturing for Grey to go ahead and perform whatever spell it was. He assumed that it wasn’t anything illegal, because even if Poe wasn’t an Auror, showing an illegal spell on the Hogwarts grounds was asking for trouble. Grey stepped away from Poe, and the poet raised his eyebrows, intrigued by whatever spell would need there to be such a healthy distance between both of them. Grey explained that he had been practicing the spell, and had been writing letters using it, which was again, not all that informative but extremely intriguing. Poe waited patiently for Grey to cast the spell, and as soon as he saw it, all of Grey’s build up made sense. Even though the fire whip was pointed away from both of them, Poe felt a rush of dry heat on his face, and he watched with eagle eyes as he saw the whip momentarily touch the ground. The last thing he needed was to get kicked out of Hogwarts because it got set on fire under his supervision. When the spell was reeled back, Poe felt another blast of warmth on his face, and he reflexively reached his hand up to his face, wondering why his beard felt the slightest bit singed. “Work in progress.” Poe repeated, trying to keep his voice calm. “I still have both of my eyebrows, right?” He asked. Poe’s beard felt intact, but feelings could be deceiving, especially when it came to fire. “Practical reasons for that spell are few and far between.” Poe agreed, though he was going to try his damndest to think of one so that Grey had a reason to continue to try to perfect the skill. “It’s more of a last resort than anything.” He finally decided to say. “If someone’s antagonistic and they won’t stay away, the smell of their own flesh burning will definitely be enough of a deterrent that you can Apparate away safely.” It wasn’t an Auror’s first choice, since they worked with tight constraints and needed to justify every decision they made, especially one with potentially deadly consequences. If the choice ever came down to his life or another’s, though, Poe was certain both he and Grey would have no trouble breaking that spell out.

@poet Grey was having a difficult time trying to figure out if Poe had been impressed by the fiery whip or not. The older man was difficult to read at times – Grey had had the same issue interpreting some of the letters that they sent back and forth too. That was most likely a trait that came with years of being an auror. Being able to hide one’s true intentions from the average person was key in his opinion. It only made sense that Poe would be like that. His sister was pretty good at it too, but she had also always been that way. Clearly there was a reason that being an auror suited her so well. He nodded his head as Poe repeated that the spell was a work in progress. Grey still didn’t think it was anything impressive, but it was out of his element when it to actually utilizing something that could harm another human being. Usually that was too much effort. He preferred digging up dirt on people and then slamming them in his paper if possible. Sometimes he wished he had control of the gossip paper for those instances. He let out an awkward laugh as Poe asked him if both of his eyebrows were still there. Grey had heard that before recently. “Yeah, they’re still there.” There was no messing around today. Last time where singed eyebrows were in question, maybe. But not today.
“It’s good for leaving permanent marks on stone, though I’m not exactly into vandalizing every little thing just to practice it.” And to address the bigger picture, he was pretty sure it could kill someone in its whip form. If he wanted to restrain a person, there were other, less lethal spells for that. Anyone that was conjuring up a whip of fire was doing so to cause bodily harm. “Pretty much,” Grey responded as Poe pointed out that it was a last resort. The additional factoid about using it to stop someone so he could get away brought up a good point though. He realized that there were a lot of things that he still didn’t know about aurors. Supposedly that was all detailed during the recruitment process. Any questions he had about that could be asked a later date. Right now he was supposed to be learning about how to be an animagus. “So does that mean I have enough power or whatever to transform into an animagus?”

Poe gave Grey a slightly lopsided grin when the Gryffindor said that his eyebrows were indeed still there. He hadn’t expected anything less, but it was better to check than unwittingly be walking around with only half an eyebrow. That would make McGonagall scold him even more than the beard would, he was certain. Poe shuddered a little. He had fought Dark wizards before and apprehended dozens, if not hundreds, of criminals, but Minerva McGonagall still made him a little afraid. She was a force to be reckoned with if there ever was such a thing, and she would not take kindly to him doing something stupid.
“So if a bunch of black marks randomly start showing up on stone buildings in London, I know who to apprehend.” Poe said with a chuckle when Grey said that the spell was also good at leaving permanent marks on stone. The Hufflepuff wondered how his young charge had figured that out, but figured that it was better not to ask, so he couldn’t be held liable. Again, if McGonagall discovered he was even tangentially related to vandalism on the Hogwarts grounds, she’d have his hide. Hogwarts was big enough (and old enough) that even if Grey had managed to mark some of the stones, it was likely that no one would be able to find his marks, or would attribute it to something else, like the battle that had occurred there over two decades ago. Grey asked if he had enough power to become an Animagus, and Poe nodded. He had almost forgotten that was the purpose of their meeting. “Oh, definitely.” He said. Honestly, Poe wondered if more of the transformation came from believing that one was able to do it, hence why he wasn’t being shy with the positive reinforcement. “The only thing that might potentially be a problem is that your Animagus will likely be a bird. That works out an entirely different set of muscles, and you’ll have to learn to fly without anyone teaching you – unless you happen to know a bird Animagus.” Poe was setting out the challenges in front of Grey so that he really knew what he was in for. Once he agreed to all of the stipulations, though, Poe was going to begin actually teaching the Gryffindor lessons that were precursors to transformation.

@poet It took a second for Grey to get what Poe was saying when he mentioned finding black marks on buildings. That was certainly a sign that he didn’t have any malicious intent with the fire whip spell. “Yeah I guess you do,” Grey laughed awkwardly. “Should probably work on a counter curse for it so I can scrub them clean after I get dragged in.” Honestly, that wasn’t a bad idea at all, especially if one didn’t exist already. He had never contemplated creating a spell to clean up another one, but it couldn’t be that hard if he put his mind to it. Right now he didn’t have the time for it, seeing as this new training to be an animagus was taking precedent, as well as normal school work and finding a good replacement for the newspaper. Once the latter two were finished he could get to work on it though.
The more important question at hand was whether or not he was ‘strong’ enough to be an animagus, if that was even a thing. He was sure weak-minded people couldn’t pull it off, but any amount of dedication towards it would eventually lead to some kind of breakthrough. At least he knew how to push himself when it really came down to it. If the potions professor ever heard him saying that they would probably chew him out for it. Grey couldn’t even recall the last time he had cared about the class. Only Merlin knew how he ended up in the NEWT level class. Sheer luck he supposed. Poe agreed that he had enough of whatever it was that an animagus needed, probably a high aptitude for concentration and the idiocy of putting one’s body through a possibly permanent transformation. He couldn’t help but grin at the answer though, because that was what he had been expecting to hear. The additional comment about being a bird and having to work different muscles didn’t really matter much to him. This was going to be hard work no matter what animal he turned into. Thinking it would be easy was the first step to failure in his mind. “Who says I’ll be a bird? You did say that the patronus doesn’t always match the animagus.” Grey countered back. “I would prefer a crow though…”

Poe’s comment about knowing who created the black marks seemed to make Grey slightly worried – at least, the boy was acting a little more strangely, and his laugh sounded forced when he did it. The Gryffindor mentioned working on a countercurse for the black marks, and Poe laughed. “That wouldn’t be a bad idea.” He agreed. He doubted that anyone would ask him about the marks if they were found in the school, since he didn’t work there anymore, but even if they did, Poe wasn’t going to throw Grey under the bus. It wasn’t like they could get mad at him, since he had never actually seen Grey burn the stones – and he had never expressly admitted to doing it, just agreed when Poe made a comment about the culprit. Still, not having to lie by omission would be preferable.
“More often than not, an Animagus form matches a Patronus, unless there’s a specific reason it wouldn’t.” Poe explained. “So while you’re right that you might not be a bird, chances are that you will be.” The fact that Grey would prefer that form made it even more likely that he would take it. For Poe, there were several factors that led to his Animagus form being a dog instead of a goose. For one thing, he had never actually seen a goose up close – the only version of the animal that he had seen not flying several hundred meters overhead was his Patronus. Grey had no doubt seen a crow much closer up than Poe had ever seen a goose, and transforming into an animal required having a clear picture of what it looked like. The Hufflepuff had also gone into becoming an Animagus with the intent of using it in his Auror career, as well. The transformation magic was strange, and he still didn’t understand it fully, but Poe was certain that it took the preference of the user into account. A goose was not that great when it came to protecting other people, but a dog that was both common and extremely powerful suited that bill. “Plus, I’m the only one I know that has a different Animagus form from their Patronus, and I want to be special.” Poe added, cracking a smile.

@poet The last thing he needed was to be scolded for making a bunch of marks around the school while testing out a new spell. Not knowing a counter curse, or at least a way to clean it up would just be another smudge on his record at Hogwarts. All those times being caught entering the common room late by Cecelia, or aurors yelling at him this year would be nothing compared to vandalism. Sure, magic could almost fix anything, but also it couldn’t fix everything. In a few months he was expected to be just another law abiding magical citizen floundering around trying to find his way as an auror in training. Being law enforcement meant keeping a squeaky clean record. Tardiness was a non-issue once defacing property showed up. So far he was positive that he hadn’t tested the spell on anything that actually mattered. A rock here or there on the grounds wouldn’t be cared about in the slightest. There was far more terrible things the students were doing to the castle and grounds than that anyways. He only had to wander into supposedly empty classrooms at night to figure that out.
Well, that was a good point. Poe would know more about this stuff after all, seeing as he was an animagus. Grey’s relatively smartass comment hadn’t really been warranted either, more so that he wanted to show that he knew some things too. “Is there a reason for that? Or just the practicality of turning into a dog instead of your patronus?” Being a crow sounded freeing. Kind of. He didn’t know what being a bird entailed, aside from flying around, but he could already do that on a broom. That was a question Poe probably wouldn’t be able to answer either. “Do you know anyone that can turn into a bird?” He realized that made it sound like he was questioning Poe’s ability to teach the ability, since he was a dog. “In case I have questions about flying.”

Grey continued on with the questioning, which was just fine by Poe; it was a lot easier to teach by answering questions than to teach by preaching, and more often it seemed like people understood more that way, too. Poe had half a mind to show Grey his own Animagus form, but it seemed kind of silly, since it wasn’t something that the Gryffindor could look at and then copy into his own body. There was a lot of theory and a lot of stubbornness that came with the transformation, which was why he needed to help Grey in the first place. “I think that utility is a part of it, yeah.” Poe said with a nod. “I also think that my Patronus and my Animagus form show different parts of my personality.” He explained. “The goose shows my love of flying, I think. My endurance and my ability to be a lot scarier than people originally think of me.” Poe wasn’t intimidating in the way he looked – not overly strong and with a tendency to smile even when he probably shouldn’t. People wouldn’t think of him as a dangerous Auror unless they had seen him in action before, and most of those who did see him in action knew better than to judge a book by its cover anyways. “And the dog shows how much I care for people. That I have an instinct to love, but also one to protect.” It was why Poe had always found it fascinating that the Patronus took one form, and very rarely changed forms. There were so many different aspects of a personality that it wasn’t possible that any one animal could cover them all. Of course, if Patronuses changed more regularly, it probably would have been difficult to use them as identifiers or indicators of an Animagus form, but still… it was worth the thought.
“I don’t, unfortunately.” Not many people in the Auror department were Animagi due to their time going to other things, and Poe couldn’t recall anyone that he knew that was a bird Animagus. “I might be able to access the registry for you, and see if I can find the contact information for bird Animagi.” Poe wasn’t sure if he had the ability to check the Animagus registry, if he was honest, but he could at least try to get the information for Grey.
