It was Valentine's Day, and Oscar was nervous. He hadn't ever really done the whole Valentine's Day thing - Valentine's Day was something surrounding love, after all, and of all the girls he had been with, Oscar had never really loved anyone until he had met Anna. Honestly, it was still an emotion that he was struggling to understand and untangle, but he figured that, on a day dedicated to love, he ought to give the person he first experienced romantic love with something special. Persuading the house elves to allow him to section off a part of the kitchen was harder than it normally would have been, since apparently at least one other person had had the idea, but after some serious begging, Oscar had a table for two in a relatively quiet corner of the kitchen. He had Transfigured a tablecloth (albeit a shabby one) and set a candlestick on top of it, so it looked somewhat classy despite the fact that the table was in the basement of a castle. Oscar had to try a few times to light the candle since his hands were shaking slightly from nerves. He didn't want to ruin anything about the night for Anna. He hadn't told her what he was doing, just to come to the kitchens instead of the Great Hall at dinner and wear something nice. Oscar was wearing the dress robes he had worn to the Yule Ball and standing by the table, eyes on the door as he waited for Anna to enter.

Anna had no idea what to expect. It was Valentine's Day today and she was excited and nervous about the fact. Oscar was her first boyfriend, so she didn't really know what to expect, if anything. Then again, he asked her to meet him in the kitchens, so that was an indication that he was planning something ... especially since he asked her to dress nicely. Anna spent more time than she normally would have trying to decide what she should wear. Eventually she just decided on the knee-length white dress she wore to the Yule Ball because it was the only dress she brought and she figured that dressing nice meant not wearing pants. Probably. So she made her way down to the kitchens, wondering what Oscar had planned and hoping that she wouldn't be overdressed. When she arrived at the kitchens, she opened the door cautiously and stepped in, looking around. The house elves swarmed around her. "Oscar?" she asked them and they instantly pointed to a corner of the room where he was standing next to a nice-looking table. Anna smiled as she made her way across the room toward him. "Hi," she told him, a little shyly.

Oscar hadn’t ever been this nervous about seeing Anna before, so the feeling of butterflies in his stomach was strange. Even after she had become Champion and he had wondered if their relationship was going to change, or after he had realized his feelings for her, he’d never felt so shaky. Oscar rubbed his sweaty palms on his robes, hoping that Anna didn’t realize that he was nervous. The door to the kitchens opened, and Oscar straightened noticeably, smiling broadly at Anna. She said his name, and he just raised his hand in a little bit of a wave, not wanting to make too much of a scene so that she could take everything in. It was definitely different from the way the kitchens normally looked, so he couldn’t blame her for being a bit overwhelmed. “Hi.” He responded when she greeted him. “Happy Valentine’s Day, mamour.” Oscar added quietly, leaning over so he could kiss her on the cheek. He then pulled out one of the chairs for her, still smiling. “I thought we should do something special for our first Valentine’s Day together.” He explained, in case she was wondering why he had gone through all of the trouble.

Anna wasn't exactly sure what all Oscar had to go through to get this ready for her, but she was touched. He was so sweet and she loved the fact that he was trying to make this special for her. He was grinning as she approached and Anna couldn't help but smile back. Then he kissed her cheek, wishing her a happy Valentine's Day. "To you too," she whispered back as she sat down. This all felt kind of surreal to her. Was Oscar really putting all this effort into making her day special or was she going to wake up in the morning and have all of this be some sort of wonderful dream? "I think that's a great idea," she told him, "but just so you know, doing anything with you counts as special." Cheesy, yes, but Anna figured that was fine. It was Valentine's Day, after all. Wasn't today all about being cheesy for the people you cared about? She watched him from across the table, feeling lucky once more that the two had been able to move past their rocky start. "So what are we going to eat?" Anna asked curiously.

Anna whispered back a response to his greeting, and Oscar paused. Had he accidentally overwhelmed? She had looked happy when she had come up to him, but he knew this was a lot to take in, and her quiet voice made him uneasy for a moment. When she spoke again her voice was louder, and strong, too, so Oscar breathed out a sigh of relief. He hadn’t accidentally done something to make this Valentine’s Day horrible. Anna said that his idea was a great one, but that anything with him counted as special, and Oscar let out a little laugh. That was exactly the kind of sentiment that Valentine’s Day was supposed to inspire, but there were still some days that he couldn’t believe that anyone would say something like that to him, or that he’d feel something similar for someone else. Love was a strange, powerful thing indeed. Anna asked what they were going to eat, and Oscar grinned at her as he sat down. “Guess.” Just because it was Valentine’s Day didn’t mean that he was above his usual shenanigans, and he was eager to see what Anna thought they were going to dine on. It certainly wasn’t something traditional, but Oscar hoped she liked it anyways.

Oscar was quiet for a short bit, then he laughed at her cheesiness and Anna grinned. She was so excited to be able to spend time with him right now, she really didn't even care what they did together. The fact that he planned out a special dinner for her was so adorable to Anna and she couldn't wait to see what he had planned. Anna rolled her eyes a tiny bit when Oscar told her to guess what they were going to eat. "Ummm .... something French that you want me to try?" she said, starting vague. Then she laughed as an idea occurred to her. "Or crepes?" That would be funny, considering that making crepes was one of the first things they ever did together. She chuckled a little more and shook her head. "That's all I've got. What is it?" She watched Oscar carefully, her eyes alight with anticipation.

Oscar snickered a little when Anna asked if their dinner was going to be something French he wanted her to try. That encompassed most of his food ideas, that was certain, but he couldn’t help but feel like she was trying to avoid the question by being overly vague. Oscar was about to tease her about it when Anna guessed again – correctly. He was a little put out – Oscar had been hoping for a long-winded guessing game that only ended when their food was served. It was okay, though, because it was Valentine’s Day, and it was supposed to be about being happy with Anna, not getting everything that he wanted. He nodded after she said crepes, and the house elves seemed to take that as their cue to bring the food to the table. “I did not make these ones.” He admitted, though Anna knew he knew how to cook them – they both did. “I thought the house elves could make them a bit fancier.” And they had. The crepes still had steak, but it looked like a much more expensive cut than Oscar would ever be comfortable trying to cook, and the herb butter was applied more evenly, and smelled even more aromatic. The house elves came over and poured the pair glasses of champagne. Oscar raised his glass in a toast. “To us.” He said softly. It was easy to say something like ‘to love’, but that night, they weren’t celebrating love in general – they were celebrating the love between the two of them, and that was so much more special than just regular love.

Anna could tell that Oscar thought her first guess for food wasn't a good one, but she could also tell by his facial expression that her second guess was right on. He looked maybe a little disappointed, but really ... they made crepes together so it felt only natural for her to guess that they were going to eat them tonight. She smiled when he said he didn't make them. "They look great, and I love your idea," she told him, excited to eat them. She liked crepes. Always had, but savory crepes- which she hadn't known about until Oscar- were quickly becoming her favorite kind. Anna raised her glass when he did, echoing his phrase, "To us." She could hardly believe that after everything that happened during the past few months, she and Oscar grew so close. She was delighted to be spending tonight with him, and not just because it was Valentine's Day. She loved every moment she got to spend with him. She took a sip of the champagne and then smiled at him, "So what have you been up to all day?" She'd hardly seen him, which wasn't particularly common for them, so Anna thought it a decent question.

Anna echoed his toast, and Oscar grinned sappily at her. This was strange and wonderful, being able to spend Valentine’s Day with Anna. If anyone had tried to tell Oscar this was going to happen when they had first met, he would have laughed, but fate had strange ways of pushing people together when they needed each other, the way that he needed Anna. Oscar began to eat his crepes, cutting it neatly with his knife and taking a bite while Anna asked her question. Oscar swallowed, and then smiled again. “I spent a lot of time making sure that all of these plans were straightened out.” He would have hated for their special night to be ruined because he had failed to confirm something. “I tried to learn a spell to let me summon doves, but I did not start practicing early enough.” Oscar continued. Doves were supposed to be romantic, though Oscar wasn’t entirely sure why that was. “I hope that you will be okay without them.” He added. He didn’t see Anna raising a fuss about a lack of doves, though. Oscar took a sip of champagne, and then returned to his crepe, glancing at his girlfriend.

This whole dinner felt ... surreal to Anna. She adored the chance to spend more time with her boyfriend, privately and he was just being so sweet. She absolutely loved it. As she noticed him start to eat, she followed suit, cutting her crepe so she could take a bite. It was delicious. She was so glad that Oscar introduced her to savory crepes all those months ago and even more impressed that he asked the house elves to make them for her. She watched him, smilng between bites as he explained a bit about his day. He mentioned trying to learn how to summon doves, but not being able to do it with such a late start on learning the spell. Anna's smile widened, "We don't need doves for this night to be perfect," she told him easily. "Thank you for organizing all this," she gestured to the table and the space around them. "It's incredible." He might think she was exaggerating, but Anna definitely was not. She felt lucky to be spending this time with her boyfriend. She continued to eat more of her crepe, savoring every bite.

Oscar wasn’t sure which one of them was more excited to be there: him or Anna. She seemed enraptured by the whole experience, with the food and the table and the mood lighting, but he was just enraptured by her… as he had been for many months now, and as he would continue to be, probably for the rest of his life. Anna said that she didn’t need doves for the night to be perfect, and Oscar smiled softly at her. “I am glad you are not disappointed by the lack of birds.” He hadn’t expected Anna to get mad at him for that one detail being off, especially since she probably hadn’t even thought about it until he brought it up, but still… it was nice to have that reassurance. Oscar just kept on smiling when Anna thanked him for organizing the dinner – as if it was some kind of burden for him to show the one he loved the way he felt about her. “No thanks necessary. Your happiness is enough for me.” Oscar didn’t know why he kept finding himself nostalgic, but with those words, he was tempted to blurt out that her happiness had always been enough for him… even if that wasn’t quite the truth. “I hope that this is not our last Valentine’s Day together, Anna.” Oscar told her. Of course, no couple ever celebrated a day of love expecting to break up, but as far as Oscar could tell, there was never going to be an end to the ways that Anna impressed him, and he hoped that he could spend the rest of his days finding all those ways, with her by his side.

Oscar was watching Anna closely. She could sense it, even as she glanced once more around the room. She could hardly believe that he put so much effort into this, into trying to make this day special for her. She turned her attention back to her very handsome boyfriend and grinned at him. How could things be better than they already were. He started speaking, saying he was glad she wasn't disappointed and that her happiness was all he wanted. "Well, you've done a great job at making me happy," she told him. If that was all he wanted, Anna was going to make sure that he knew he achieved his goal. He said he didn't want this to be their last Valentine's Day together and Anna shook her head firmly, "It won't be. Think of it this way, Oscar. This is the first Valentine's Day we get to spend together and I'm sure there will be more." Most people their age probably wouldn't say something like that, but Anna was convinced that she was right. She loved Oscar and he loved her back. Why wouldn't they be together for years? She didn't think she would be able to be this happy without him and she wasn't planning on trying either.

Oscar didn’t know why he was so relieved to hear that he had done a good job at making Anna happy. He knew that – she told him nearly every day, and he told her just as often. Still, there was that niggling doubt in the back of his mind, the fact that he always seemed to be so… dark compared to her. Even on the night of the Yule Ball, he had been the darkness floating next to her, in bright white robes. But, Oscar reminded himself, darkness showed the starts. Sometimes someone needed to be surrounded by someone who wasn’t as happy or as sure of themselves as they were, so that they could see just how bright they really were. Anna declared that this wasn’t going to be their last Valentine’s Day together, and Oscar smiled at her. “If there is one thing I know about you, Anna Weasley, it is that you are very stubborn.” He said, taking another sip of champagne before finishing his sentence. “So if you declare it, it must be.” Even if their relationship did take a turn for the less happy, Oscar knew that Anna would fight tooth and nail to save it. They both would – they had been through too much together just to give up.

Anna wasn't quite sure, but it seemed like Oscar was ... relaxing a little more now that she told him she was happy. Was he worried about that? Anna couldn't imagine a moment when she'd been more content than she was in this instant, and she started to wonder if she was open enough about this. How good of a girlfriend was she if the guy she loved worried about her reaction to something as simple as a dinner? (No matter what day it was on) Still, despite her sudden nerves, Anna really hoped that Oscar could tell how much she was enjoying herself now. She grinned when he smiled at her, shrugging when he teased her for being stubborn. She couldn't argue that, it was true. "Good. As long as you're not just walking around, waiting for it all to end any moment. I expect you to help me, you know," she teased with a wink before taking another bite of her crepe. She looked down, surprised when she saw that it was now gone. Did she really eat so quickly? That wasn't really a question. She could tell by how full she was that she had eaten it. So Anna sipped her champagne as well, wondering what came next, if anything, but not wanting to ask Oscar just in case this was all he planned. It was perfect and she didn't want to ruin it by assuming more was coming when it might not be.

Oscar nodded when Anna said that everything was fine as long as he wasn’t walking around expecting everything to end. He didn’t know how to explain that he didn’t expect an ending, but rather feared one. “Why would I want this to end, Anna?” Oscar asked, his brow furrowing slightly. “You are the only good thing to have happened to me in a very long time.” Amidst all of the death and destruction and sadness that seemed to swirl around him, Anna was always a bright, bright light. And that was part of the reason he was terrified of what would happen if their relationship ever ended. Oscar didn’t know what he was going to do if the light went out. A part of him knew that it wasn’t any way to live, loving only one person and devoting his entire life to them, but it seemed the more he tried to reach out to other people, the harder it became to actually connect. Anna hadn’t come easily, but fate had insisted on pushing them together, and it didn’t seem that it was going to do anything similar for others. The rather somber tone of their conversation was broken up by an elf coming to the table, carrying a chocolate cake that looked about as large as it did. Oscar had only asked for two slices of cake, but the house elves had never done anything in moderation. With the cake on the table, Oscar glanced at Anna. “Would you like to cut it?” That way she could determine the serving sizes – Oscar wasn’t sure he trusted himself with that task.
