As soon as he saw this booth, he knew that Lucia would want to participate in the game. He'd spotted the "Chocolate Frog Races" sign easily and had wondered how long it'd take her to spot it herself. It'd been just a little bit longer than he expected, of course, because she had been distracted by the cotton candy machines that had been in front of them. He'd bought her a bit swirl of the puffy sugar and once she'd turned around her gasp was audible and excited. A small smile came to his face when she turned and begged him if they could play that one next. It was hard to deny her anything really so they strolled over to the booth just as a new race was beginning. He watched her watch the frogs jump across a track to the finish line and she cheered for the one she thought would win. Once the round ended Yadi handed the carnie tokens for himself and Lucia to play the game. She bet on her frog and he bet on one. Soon the signal for the race to begin started and he found himself cheering along with Lucia for their frogs to win.

Royal was not pleased. He had intended to come into the carnival, find the a game that was worth one token, and then be able to leave. But then, upon his entrance, he was given another handful of tokens! He still wasn't entirely sure what the strategy was in giving away things that could have theoretically been used to generate profit, but that was something that was definitely not his problem. Since Royal was resigned to his fate and figured that as soon as he got rid of his tokens, more would magically appear, he no longer had the strategy of finding the easiest to complete games, but rather the ones that were in his path anyways. The first of those games was the Chocolate Frog races. The carnie standing in front of the ring asked him for what frog he wanted to bet on, and Royal furrowed his eyebrows. As far as he knew, there was nothing that made one Chocolate Frog superior to another in terms of speed, so it really would be a shot in the dark. Eventually Royal picked a number, and found himself staring at the frog when the race began, as if somehow willing it to be faster would actually make it so.

Racing chocolate frogs. Interesting. She picked a frog at random, not really sure if there was a strategy to it, and paid her tokens. She moved to where the racers where to be racing, and stood a little apart from the crowd. It was amazing that she was even at this carnival at all, really, with all of these people around. She was still not so good with crowds, which was why she had been taking a lot of breaks stepping outside of the carnival or leaving early. She had Cecelia and Phil for some of it, which made things easier. Still, she was using this as a sort of test. Stay with the crowd just a little longer each day... The frogs started racing and she instinctively moved forward, watching hers go. #13 SUZIE

Jamie was having a fun time walking around the carnival and seeing all of the games with Liona by her side. The more interesting ones were the games that had less obvious magical equivalents - not just the ones that used spells to replace some bit of Muggle machinery. When Jamie had seen the sign for the Chocolate Frog Races, she had immediately been intrigued, because she hadn't been able to think of a Muggle equivalent. There were horse races o course, and sometimes snail races if people were looking to be funny, but that was nothing like the unpredictable hopping madness that she expected would result from releasing a dozen chocolate frogs at the same time. She was eager to see what that looked like, though betting on a particular frog proved difficult. Eventually, Jamie asked to see the cards that had come included with each frog, and selected the frog with Nicholas Flamel's card in it. He was the best of all of the options, power-wise, and Jamie was just hoping that the frog that was included in the package would be just as powerful (and fast) as the wizard included on the card.

It was still difficult from Imogen to find any modicum of enjoyment in the carnival, but after she had stopped expecting herself to be a professor and savior to every lost or wandering child, things had become slightly less stressful. She still wasn't much in the mood for playing games, but she had gotten a bite to eat and watched a few more shows, and it had been... okay. The professor was still wandering around the grounds of the carnival, looking for something new to focus her attention on, when a chocolate frog hopped past her foot. Curious, Imogen looked at the place where the frog had come from, and saw that there were a great number of people gathered around... something. And the frog by her foot was certainly not the only one in the premises, because one frog had just leaped far above the heads of the crowd. She meandered over, and saw that the frogs were... racing. Interesting. Im didn't pay much attention to which frog won, but when the next race was about to start, a carnie asked her if she'd like to bet on the winner. Imogen chose a frog utterly at random and handed over a few tokens, more interested in watching the peculiar sort of race than actually winning anything off it.

Georgie was just about ready to return to the castle after a long day of wandering around the carnival. One last thing had caught her attention, though: a sign with a large frog painted on it, and no words to accompany the picture. The sign had an arrow pointing to a nearby booth, and Georgie decided that investigating a little before she left wouldn't be a bad thing. A carnie was yelling about taking the last round of bets, and Georgie shoved a few tokens at him, though she wasn't sure what exactly she was betting on, or why. When she saw the cardboard boxes rip off the top of several Chocolate Frogs, Georgie just snorted to herself. The idea was somewhat ridiculous, in her opinion... not that anyone was asking for it. She was trying to figure out which frog it was that she had actually bet on, but couldn't for the life of her tell what was distinguishing each frog from the ones next to it. She hurried off as soon as she was handed her tickets, not wanting to miss curfew or face the ire of her brother because he thought she had abandoned him too or something equally daft. As if she could actually leave Lance behind.

Royal didn't know why he was back at the Chocolate Frog Races. He had seen his first time that there was no strategy to the game, and had gone on to play several games that did involve either skill or strategy, with various amounts of success. It wasn't like leaving the arena and coming back to it was somehow going to change the mechanics of the betting, nor would it change his opinion of its absurdity. Yet here he was, handing over his tokens in exchange for picking a random number and hoping for the best. That was the only strategy that Royal considered feasible in any way, though the spools of tickets that some people had clutched in their hands begged to differ. Either that, or they had been playing for so long that no matter how many tickets they earned for every play, they still managed to amass quite a few. Royal was still working on his plot to foist his tickets off on some unsuspecting first year, but since his source of tokens kept getting renewed, that proved rather difficult. Maybe he could burn through all of his tokens like this, Royal thought with a slight smirk as he watched the Chocolate Frogs begin to hop towards the finish line.

Scorpius was starting to get tired. Not from the games - those were fun. He never would have guessed that he would be having this great of a time at a carnival, especially when he was on break from doing work. After running from stand to stand, and resting his legs for a few loops on the ferris wheel, Scorpius could feel his feet starting to ache. By this point in time, he had easily run up and down the midway a couple dozen times. Normally that wouldn't be too bad, except that he had literally been running. After a certain point in time, he had decided that if he was going to make a day of this, he might as well get something out of it. And so he did, and it was a workout.
Now he was kind of regretted making that choice. The food he had eaten wasn't exactly sitting well with running around, and there were still plenty of games to go. Being able to do whatever he wanted for the first time in a while was amazing, especially because there was no one there to tell him not to have fun. At school, he had to keep up appearances. Here, he felt like he could do whatever he wanted. So now he was standing in front of a stand that apparently raced chocolate frogs. Interesting concept. Scorpius had been tricked from a distance, similar to the butterbeer one, and thought they were selling chocolate frogs. Instead he was greeted by the game. Stepping up, he chose a frog. He had a feeling this one would pull through with a win.
