There was a carnival going on near Hogsmeade, and there was exactly one person who could convince Viola to even consider going. Sadly for them, they hadn't planned another date for March, and since they tried to do something with Maria at least once a month... it was an easy out for them. Besides, there were a ton of things that they could do at a carnival. And maybe the excitement of it all would help them forget that had come over them when they had been helping Maria come back from her nightmares. This wasn't going to end, an all Viola needed was a light-hearted date was exactly what Viola needed to remind themself of that. In the spirit of a real date, Viola had asked Maria to meet them at the carnival instead of walking from the ship together - it felt more romantic when they weren't constantly together all the time (and Maria wasn't pestering them about what they were going to do). Viola waited by the gate, with a rose hidden behind their back while they waited for Maria to arrive.

A carnival! Maria LOVED carnivals! Okay, so technically she loved anything that involves crowds and loud music. Carnival games and food was an added bonus. Of course it was completely natural for her to go with Viola. They were her partner after all. Viola had insisted on meeting at the carnival though rather then walk down together. Maria was fine with that, it gave her plenty of time to get ready. Yes, even carnivals brought out her vain side that demanded perfection in her appearance. Once she was satisfied with her appearance she left the ship and headed out to the spot Viola said to meet.
Of course Viola was already there. Facing the right direction to see Maria coming. Darn. Maria liked sneaking up on Viola. Oh well. Flashing her most charming smile, Maria quickly approached her partner and wrapped both hands behind their neck (partially to ensure they didn't try to escape. But also because she liked being possessive and that was a very possessive gesture.) and leaned into quite firmly kiss her partner. It wasn't a long kiss, but enough to moderately satisfy Maria for now and when she pulled away that same smile appeared once more. "Hey." at least it was a proper greeting.

Viola had always known that Maria could be possessive. They had forgotten that that possessiveness occurred at all hours of the day – not just close to when they could slip into each other’s beds. They returned Maria’s kiss with as much enthusiasm as they could muster in the morning, which admittedly wasn’t that much. The kiss was short if not entirely sweet, and Viola just shook their head a little at Maria when she grinned at them. She was crazy. But they loved crazy. More specifically, they loved her (as strange as that still felt to think). “Hey.” They returned, chuckling at how casual Maria could be about kissing first and greeting later. “Do you know why they’re have a carnival?” Viola asked. They had half a mind to believe that it was some complicated publicity stunt or foreshadowing of the Third Task, but they didn’t have enough connections at Hogwarts to confirm or deny that. They extended their hand for Maria. If this was going to be a proper date, they needed to hold hands, right? Viola gestured their head towards the gates of the carnival, inviting Maria wordlessly inside so they could keep moving while she answered their question.

Viola was giving her their 'you are crazy' headshakes and look. Maria felt like Viola spent half their time giving her that look. Considering her antics though... Maria didn't blame them one bit. If anything she commended them for being smart enough not to accept everything she did as normal or even sane. So that look only made Maria's wild grin grow even wider and untame.
Immediately Maria took Viola's offered hand, entwining her fingers between theirs she squeezed gently. "Who knows. Maybe they hold one every year." she answered lightheartedly as they walked and Maria swung their joint hands just a little. She was in a rather good mood today. No classes. Spending the day at the carnival with Viola. "Have you ever been to a carnival before?" she asked. Her gaze had begun to wander, and practically light up. While it was such a stereotype to say it... carnivals brought out her inner gypsy.

Maria said that they could have a carnival every year, and Viola raised their eyebrows. That was a possibility, yes, but they didn’t think so many Hogwarts kids would be there if it was a yearly occurrence. They weren’t going to voice that suspicion, though, because they would rather enjoy the carnival and the warmth of Maria’s hand in theirs. It was strange, to act so… couple-y. Yes, they were a couple, but there were some days Viola was still shocked that Maria could do more than kiss and… more than kiss. When their girlfriend asked if they had been to a carnival before, Viola nodded. “My mom took me to one when I was… twelve, I think.” Viola’s mother had a habit of swooping in once a year, normally during the summer time, and taking Viola on some crazy, half-assed journey she dared to call an adventure. When they were eight, it had been going to some water park. When they were thirteen, it had been learning to ride a horse. When they were sixteen, it had been learning how to drive a stick-shift. None of them were really any sort of bonding experience, just enough of something that their mother didn’t feel as bad about going globe-trotting without her children. It was fine – Viola had never expected anything from their mother, really – but Viola would be lying if they said they didn’t go into the carnival with some reservations and bad memories.

Viola didn't say anything to Maria's initial statement but she didn't mind. A carnival was a carnival. Who cared why it was there? It was a chance to get out, have fun, play games. Who was she to question such an opportunity? But that was her outlook on life in general. She didn't question often if it was something she found enjoyable. The carnival in particular was... exactly how you'd imagine one. Bright lights, vibrant colors everywhere, game booths and ticket stands. A few rides. An elaborate mixture of food. It all added to Maria's good mood.
Maria tilted her head to look over at Viola at the mention of their mother. The pair had discussed their parents once. But since then... parents was almost a taboo topic. Neither really mentioned them. And from what Maria remembered she knew that Viola's mother wasn't really in the picture that much. "Well, I'll have you know I've been to plenty of carnivals, so I'll show you how they are really done." she smugly proclaimed, giving Viola's hand a squeeze before pulling them down one of the paths lined with vendors, games, and food stands. "What do you want to do first?"

Maria looked over at them at the mention of their mother, and Viola wondered if they had been wrong to bring her up at all. They could have just said that they had been to a carnival before – which was the truth, but not the whole truth. Viola hated dealing in half-truths, of course, but they had already proved to themself they were willing to sacrifice the truth if it meant protecting Maria. And while their family history wasn’t exactly sordid enough that Maria needed protecting from it… it was definitely better that their girlfriend not realize that Viola’s attitude of not caring what people thought stemmed partially from the fact that their mother didn’t give them much thought in the first place. Beside, their past paled in comparison to Maria’s, and they didn’t want things to get competitive about who had it worse. Maria said that she had been to many carnivals, and Viola laughed. They should have expected that. “How many carnies have you slept with?” They asked breezily. The question was perfectly nonchalant, but despite having come to terms with the fact that getting Maria to stop sleeping around was impossible, Viola was still morbidly curious about how many other conquests Maria had had. When Maria asked what they wanted to do first, Viola shrugged. “You’re the carnival expert. What do you think we should do first?”

Viola's question really wasn't that surprising. In fact it was perfectly expected. Maria's track record justified such questions. Especially from her partner, Viola. Who, despite dating two months now she's still never gone all the way with. What an odd idea... Maria flashed an impish smile at Viola. "Any guesses first?" She asked slyly. She waited a few moments, to see if Viola would guess or not. Regardless of if they did or not Maria spoke again after giving Viola the chance. Her smile softened before she spoke. "None." that would probably be a shocking answer. Maria tried to sleep with anything that moved. And yet... she shrugged and looked away, as if her next comment was slightly embarrassing. "I've never been bored enough at a carnival to try."
Maria rolled her eyes as the decision was turned back on her. Sure there was plenty she could do! But she wanted to know what Viola wanted! So still holding Viola's hand tight she turned and started to pull her partner towards the games. "Games it is!" of course the stall she approached had a potentially explosive outcome. Explosive Kerplunk.

When Maria asked if they had any guesses, Viola knew that the answer wasn’t going to be typical. Their guesses, therefore, were over a hundred and zero, since those were the only numbers that Maria would consider anomalous. They were relieved to hear that her answer was actually the latter, because if Maria had slept with that many people… well, Viola actually didn’t know what that meant. Sleeping with one persona and sleeping with a hundred wasn’t that different in the end, was it? Merlin, Maria was starting to rub off on them. “That’s impressive.” They said. After having spent the better part of two weeks trying to entertain Maria enough that she wouldn’t stay, Viola had realized that trying to keep Maria occupied was a very difficult task. A carnival was a production with many more people than Viola had access to, though, so maybe that was why.
Maria declared that they were going to begin by playing games, and Viola grinned as they were pulled through the crowd. They should have expected that, considering the way Maria liked to have fun. The game they were in front of was called Explosive Kerplunk, and Viola raised their eyebrows. “If you want to play that, you can, but I intend to go home with as many fingers and toes as I came here with.” This just seemed slightly dangerous.

Maria rolled her eyes. Was it really that impressive? Okay, probably... Considering her track record of course it was surprising. And yet here she was with the one person she was developing actual feelings for, feelings that justified the exact behavior that Maria took for granted and practically abused, and she felt no compulsion to force such behavior on Viola. She wanted it to be Viola's choice when they went down that path, and not because she'd manipulated them. "At least you don't have to compete with them for my affection. That belongs solely to you today." Tomorrow... She couldn't make any promises. But at least for today she wanted no one else.
Viola's hesitation was understandable. It would be quite a tragedy for Viola to lose a few fingers playing a game. But magic would sew them back on. Maria didn't say though though, it might ruin the mood. Instead Maria moved closer to Viola and raised their conjoined hands to her lips, brushing a kiss against the back of Viola's hand. "Life's no fun without a little risk. Come on, Viola." She quietly begged, her voice sickenly sweet as to try and tempted Viola into cooperating.

Viola gave Maria a strange look when she said that they didn’t have to compete with the carnies for her attention. They didn’t think that Maria had ever made a promise like that before. She had never been able to say that she belonged to just Viola, even for a period as short as a day, because that had never been true. There had always been someone else. And that promise… felt big, especially for how small it was. Like Maria was actually beginning to commit to them. It was stupid, Viola knew, to be reading into that innocuous comment that much, but they felt a strange sensation curling through them. It was… hope. Hope that all that they had been doing with Maria, and for her, was finally beginning to pay off. “Thanks.” Viola said after a pause, smiling a bit at their girlfriend. If only she knew everything that had gone into that one word.
Viola snorted when Maria said that life was no fun without a little risk. “If I didn’t believe in a little risk, why would I be dating you?” They retorted. Anyone and everyone knew that dating Maria wasn’t a guarantee of anything. Their girlfriend was as wild as the fire that she controlled. She changed by the hour, or even the minute. “I’ll play.” They finally said grudgingly. Viola was having a harder and harder time saying no to Maria lately.

Maria didn't like that look Viola was giving her. As if they were reading into her comment far more than they should. Even Maria didn't fully understand why she'd said it like that. Why she felt so... content with just Viola. She'd never felt content with anyone. Never felt like one person was ever enough. But Viola was changing that. Changing her. Eventually that look turned into a smile and 'thanks', and Maria found herself smiling a little back, though not saying anything about it.
That wide mischievous smile of Maria's appeared. "I think I'm more then 'a little' risk" A fact they were both keenly aware of. Risk or not though, she was still Viola's girlfriend. But then they were agreeing to play and Maria had he most excited expression. "Great!" She sounded quite smug about getting Viola to give in. So, steering Viola they stepped up to the booth and Maria eyed the set up. The explosives were balanced on top of the sticks that players were meant to remove one at a time, trying to avoid setting off any explosives. Maria handed over the tokens necessary for both of them to play.

Viola snorted when Maria said that she was more than ‘a little’ risk. “You prove my point, then.” They said breezily. If they were opposed to risk then they wouldn’t even be there, arguing about how many risks they wanted to take. Luckily enough for them, the risk they took in Explosive Kerplunk turned out to be a good one, because there weren’t any explosions to singe them or remove their extremities. Maria wasn’t so lucky, but Viola could have sworn that she was more pleased that way than she would have been if she had made it out of the game unscathed. What happened next was honestly a blur of being dragged from game to game. About halfway through, though, Viola stopped having to be dragged. They weren’t exactly running from game to game, but they were definitely less reluctant than they had been in the beginning. After some time of playing games, though, Viola had to insist they halt. “I’m hungry.” They said. It should have sounded like a complaint, but Viola wasn’t sure they had ever complained legitimately, instead of just to bug Maria. “I don’t suppose you have carnival food recommendations?” They asked. Maria knew everything there was to know, and they assumed that extended to food.

Maria could only grin wildly. Of course she was a risk. She'd never deny it. Between just her overall personality and her actions you were never bored around Maria. "I think you like taking plenty of risks, Viola. Even if you don't like admitting it." otherwise they would have put up more of a fuss to playing dangerous games.
Viola's luck was holding up as they played the game, nothing exploding on them. Meanwhile Maria's did. It wasn't really an 'explosion' though. More like a large fire cracker going off. All she did was laugh, actually pleased by the outcome. No one had ever accused her of being totally sane, today was just proof of that. But hey, she was having fun! What else mattered?
A slew of games, and laughter later and Viola was calling for a time off. Maria stopped walking towards a booth they hadn't gone to yet and turned back to her partner with a look of realization. As if food had completely slipped her mind. Now that Viola mentioned it though.... oh great, Maria's crazy smile was back. "Wait here." she ordered sternly before leaning in to plant a quick kiss on Viola's cheek... and then quickly hurrying out of sight. She'd seen a rather intriguing food stand earlier, but no way would Viola agree if they saw it.
A few minutes passed and Maria returned, still looking chaotically ecstatic (but that wasn't new) and she held out one of the two skewers in her hand to Viola. "Today is for taking risks." well... whatever it was she'd gotten she wasn't telling Viola.

Viola just shrugged when Maria said that they liked taking risks more than they let on. Arguing the point probably wasn’t going to do anything other than make Maria surer that she was right, and take too much time away from them having fun together. Maria continued to lead them through the maze that was the carnival – maybe, Viola thought with a smile to themself, having been to so many carnivals made it easy for her to figure out how they were organized, even if everything seemed like nothing more than organized chaos to Viola. Maria told them to wait, and Viola didn’t have time to so much as open their mouth in protest before Maria whipped way into the crowd.
When she returned, Viola was still waiting, though they were noticeably less amused than they had been when Maria had left. Being alone in the middle of a strange place with absolutely no hope of getting out if their girlfriend didn’t return hadn’t exactly bolstered their spirits. The skewer of whatever that Maria was holding didn’t do anything to improve their mood, either. Maria proclaimed that the food choice was to continue in the vein of taking risks, but Viola thought that she was probably just trying to torture her partner for some unknown reason. Viola didn’t want to show fear to Maria, though, so they stuck the skewer in their mouth and bit off a bit of the mystery substance… only to promptly spit it out. “You know, if you wanted to break up with me, there are easier methods than poison.” They said crossly, glaring at Maria.
