"Yeah that might be easier, but it's not near as accurate." he continued. "Good and bad are such blanket terms, something that I think it bad, you might think is good, and vice-versa, so who's to say what someone's true alignment is?" he asked, not really expecting an answer so much as just posing a question to be thought on and maybe reflected upon at a later date. He thought about it often, which was why he perfected to see people on a spectrum rather than a scale with two sides. She sparked in interest in something that he said and he found her interest interesting. "No one really knows what someone is thinking or hiding." he shrugged. "Not even me." he didn't mean that to sound cocky, more meaning that not even someone trained to read people would be able to gather all of the information without serious detective work. "There are always double crossers, Severus Snape, famous double crosser." he explained. "And there are always people, who, say, bully people because they're actually not confident in themselves but feel that if everyone else is made to feel inferior then they can feel superior and no one will see why they bully." he added.

Phoebe nodded slowly as she listened to Riley explain how it isn't accurate to label something as "good" or "bad" because different people believe different things are good or bad. However, her nod was more to show that she understood, not that she agreed. Everyone was allowed to have their own opinions, sure, but Phoebe was the kind of person who thought her opinion was the only right opinion. She didn't say that out loud, since she knew others wouldn't exactly think positively of her if they thought she was close-minded.
To answer Phoebe's question, Riley said no one could know what someone else was thinking or hiding -- not even him. While that wasn't the answer she had been hoping for, (being Phoebe, she was probably hoping for him to tell her a random person's darkest secrets,) she found it a little comforting that he didn't know everything about her. "Not unless they're a Legilimens, that is," she replied, mostly as a joke.
When Riley brought up bullying, Phoebe raised an eyebrow without realizing it. What did bullying have to do with all this? Perhaps she was just feeling self conscious because she was a bit of a bully to some of the Muggleborns she knew. Well, she was only a bully to those Muggleborns because they deserved it. It wasn't because she felt inferior. Why would she ever feel inferior to a Muggleborn? Great, now she was questioning herself. "I guess I could see that happening..." she said vaguely, with a shrug.

Riley wasn't trying to make Phoebe uncomfortable, but then again, he wasn't really going out of his way at all to make the girl comfortable either. They were in an interesting conversation, one he would most likely remember for a while and ponder on in private with his notebook in hand. He could see her getting slightly uncomfortable and maybe a little frustrated as the conversation went on however it didn't really stop him from speaking. If she wanted to leave she would. He had no real desire to leave, he had come up for some fresh air and to look at the stars and that was what he planned on doing, at least for a while longer. "Yes, unless you're a Legilimens." he agreed with a semi proud smile, she was joking, which was a good sign. At least a sign that he hadn't scared her off. Riley liked people, even if they sometimes found him a little creepy. He was a good boy and a huge people pleaser. "It happens a lot more than people realize, sometimes even without the person who's doing it realizing." he shrugged casually. He had seen it in many forms. He then looked down at the girl, deciding to change the subject a bit. "You're a 5th year, right? How are you feeling about the OWLs?" he asked.

Riley claimed that bullies sometimes didn't recognize their own confidence issues, to which Phoebe just shrugged again. She was plenty confident, so she didn't know why the conversation was affecting her so much. However, she was relieved when Riley changed the topic to OWLs. "I guess I'm a little stressed, just like everyone else," she responded to his question. The teachers seemed to enjoy reminding their students every five minutes about how important these test scores were and how it could change their lives and all that, and Phoebe wasn't immune to it. In fact, she was a little more worried than she thought she would be because she honestly had no idea what she wanted to do with her life after school. Astronomy and Defense Against the Dark Arts were enjoyable, she supposed, but not anything you could make a real career out of. Unless you wanted to become an Auror, which she definitely didn't. "It's kind of unfair how these tests you take when you're fifteen or sixteen years old determine the rest of your life, at a least a little bit... How did you feel before you took your OWLs?"

He wasn't at all surprise that she was stressed about her OWLs, it wasn't uncommon for Ravenclaw's who strived for greatness to be the most stressed over big tests like this, especially if they already knew what they wanted to do with their lives and their careers depended on these scores, which she then commented on. "Um, well I wasn't too stressed about them. I mean, I don't really plan on using a lot of the skills that we study in Hogwarts in the future career, so my marks couldn't really do anything to hinder my future, but I understand that it's really stressful if you plan to work for the ministry or hospital or something." he shrugged. He was planning on going into psychology, but he also got good marks on his OWLs anyway, at least good enough to continue all of his favorite subjects, though, he was a little disappointed that Hogwarts wouldn't let him take an independent study for all of his psychology studying. "What field do you plan on going into?" he asked her.

Riley stated that he didn't plan on using any of the skills he gained at Hogwarts in a future career anyway, which made Phoebe feel a little better herself. Even if for some reason she didn't do well on her OWLs, she would still have options. She wondered if there had ever been a student who failed all of their OWLs and what happened to them afterwards.
"That's the thing, I don't know," she replied when Riley asked what field she wanted to go into after graduating. "And I don't want to be limited by my test scores... If that makes any sense. For example, what if I find out when I'm older I really want to do something that requires a History of Magic OWL, but I failed? I mean, I probably won't be interested in anything that has to do with History of Magic, but you get my point." That was a really long ramble Riley probably wasn't interested in, but hey, he was the one who asked. "What about you?" she questioned.

Riley hadn't always known what he wanted to do. He always knew that he wanted to do something that involved his self-taught skills, but he hadn't come to a conclusion until just a few months ago actually. He knew he couldn't hold a muggle job, his parents would never allow him to. And he knew he didn't have to listen to them, but he wanted to. It wasn't the biggest request and it would make them happy. But, that didn't mean that he couldn't have a non-magical job. He could be a writer or journalist that catered to wizards for example.
"To be honest, if you really want to go after a career and you failed an OWL I really don't think it would completely close the door. I'm sure there are other things you can do: more training or apprenticing or something." he shrugged. Of course, he didn't know for sure, it was just speculation, but he couldn't see how one test could determine everything, especially with two years of education left after the test. "Me? I think I'm going to open a Psychology practice. There's a huge market missing in the wizarding world for therapists. And with my skills I think it would be fitting." he admitted. It wasn't set in stone yet, but ever since the idea popped into his head he couldn't see himself doing anything else.

Riley suggested that failing an OWL didn't necessarily close all the doors. "I guess," Phoebe shrugged. "I don't know if that makes the testing any less stressful, though." Still, the fact that he was trying to make her feel better made her think he wasn't a completely terrible person. Of course, the only reason she cared was because she didn't want him to go telling everyone any of the things he might have concluded about her.
"Yeah, that sounds interesting," she replied, mostly just to sound polite, when Riley described what kind of career he was looking into. What he said was true; she had never heard of a wizard psychologist before. That probably meant it wasn't a very successful business, or maybe he was just the first person to ever think of it. Whether it was a good idea or not, Phoebe was a little jealous he had it all figured out and she... well, hadn't.
She took another glance up at the dark sky before making her way casually to the door that led into the castle. "Well, I should probably get back to the common room. I don't want to get in trouble for being out past curfew or anything..." she said, although in reality she was just ready to leave. She didn't feel there was anything useful to come out of this conversation and, honestly, she wasn't sure why she had stayed this long anyway.

Riley didn't think that it was that weird that he knew what he wanted to do and she hadn't quite figured it out yet. He was a year older than her, and he would have had to figure it out next year anyway. When she was his age and in the same place that he was in her education, she would probably have a slightly better grasp on her ideal career too. It really was something that came with age, at least in his experience. He didn't know what he wanted to do until just a few weeks ago when he began to talk about his idea seriously. She had time. He wouldn't say any of this out loud because he knew that she didn't want to hear it. And he didn't want to impose. He wasn't a psychologist yet.
She insisted that she should get back to the common room. He nodded. "I'm going to stay a while." he insisted. He didn't mind if she was leaving, he knew she was uncomfortable in this situation, especially after having found out about his skills. He turned back to the sky, leaning over the railing a bit, hearing her disappear behind him. It had been quite an interesting night. He had enjoyed their conversation, at least a little bit. She was a complex character, and he knew that she was hiding a lot more than she was showing, which always made him uneasy, however, since he knew that she was hiding, it didn't phase him. he continued to look at the stars, taking a deep breath and just thinking; which was what he came up here to do in the first place. he certainly had a lot to think about.
