Despite losing out on three rounds worth of fairies, gaining back a few in the previous round was good for Émile’s morale. If that hadn’t happened…well, he wasn’t sure if he was going to become one of those losers that gave up during hardships or if he would fail in general. Those thoughts were behind him now though, just as the other rounds were. This was the tenth and final round; it wasn’t like it would kill him to wander out into the fog one last time to possibly find a few fairies to bring back. At least then he could kind of put on a show, and make it looked like he cared about winning. The only way that would happen was if the other champions were worse off than he was (which he doubted), or if he managed to beat one in a duel and get just enough fairies to scoot into first. That was a long shot, but he had seen the impossible become possible before. Like Greyback becoming a champion. The thought alone made Émile smirk. Here they were, in the third task of the Triwizard Tournament, and Durmstrang’s champion was better off sitting on the sidelines than competing. Even if he won this task, he was still going to be in last place. Émile was sure the boy was frustrated, because it frustrated him as well. There had been so much hope for Greyback. It was such a sad story to witness.
Heading north of his base, or what he assumed was north, Émile kept himself next to another one of the impassable walls. Like earlier, he knew this would be helpful in returning to his base at the end of the round. Walking for quite a bit longer than he had in the previous rounds, he finally stopped in what looked to be a fairy clearing. Except that there weren’t any around. That figured. Here he was in the final round, in a clearing, and not a single fairy was in sight. Body still aching from the beast attacks, Émile decided that he had enough of waiting idly and turned around to head back to his base. The final gong was probably going to go soon.
Then he saw it. The furry shape of a creature running along the ground in front of him. A niffler. That was funny, considering they had already used a niffler as one of the creatures in the second task. So far, he had yet to see any overlap between the tasks, but this was most certainly the first. The real question though, was why was there a niffler inside the arena? They were attracted to coins and jewelry; shiny things. Émile answered his own question as he worked it through his head. The fairies had a certain twinkle and shine to them. Of course a niffler would find that enticing. It would also explain the empty field that he had arrived in. The creature probably got there seconds before Émile had, and snatched up all the fairies. That meant if he grabbed the niffler, he could possibly get them back for himself.
By the time he put all of this together, Émile looked up to see the niffler waddling off. That wouldn’t do. Wand out, he stunned the little creature where it was, and made his way over to it. Picking it up, Émile examined it. Somehow, in the final seconds before it was stunned, it managed to protect the pouch that it shoved its treasures into. He was fine with that. The walk back to the base would be long enough that the stun would wear off by then. Grinning, Émile did just that.
The walk back seemed to go by in a flash. There was a spring in his step as he arrived at the cage, just in time for the stun to end. The niffler struggled a bit, but Émile made sure that he had a hold on the beast’s legs. The idea was to shake all three fairies out of the pouch, and then let the little guy go. He wasn’t one to torture an animal just for the likes of a contest. Napoleon would be pissed if he ever learned of it. Cage door open, Émile shook the niffler. The first fairy came spilling out, and then the second, third, fourth, fifth-all the way until he counted twenty-two fairies. A couple solid shakes of the niffler before letting it go left Émile in disbelief. He had lost out on at the most, nine fairies. And in one stroke of luck, he had almost tripled that. Slamming the cage door shut, the final gong of the task went off. The extra fairies were going to pay off in the end. He could already tell.

The potion was disgusting, but Anna decided it was worth it when she realized that it was healing her wounds. That was nice. All of a sudden her wrist wasn't hurting any more and the major aches and pains that she felt left, leaving her ready for the next round. At least, physically read. Emotionally ... well, let's just say that Anna didn't really want to head back out just to find more stupid fairies. However, once the bell sounded again Anna set off. She figured she didn't really have a choice, since this wasn't really a private task. Everyone who came to the school for the task could see her. Searching for the fairies was what she was supposed to do and if she just stood by her base for no reason, she would be mocked for sure by everyone who saw.
Something felt off. Honestly, Anna couldn't put her finger on what was wrong, but something was. As she walked, she felt a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. At first it was just a light feeling, like maybe she didn't eat something so good this morning, but as she continued on, Anna's heart started sinking as well. Something was really, really wrong here. She looked around herself, trying to find what was wrong, but she couldn't see anything, just a rock nearby. Shaking her head at herself, Anna kept on going, telling herself that she needed to focus on finding more fairies. The faster she found fairies, the sooner she could get back to base. She wasn't sure how many more rounds there would be, but she was sure there couldn't be too many more. Since she didn't get any fairies the last round, she needed to do it now.
Still, each step somehow felt harder and harder to take. Then, she saw something glimmering in the distance. Anna gave a small smile as she reached the fairies. She grabbed one of each color, figuring that was still the smartest way to go and then turned around to head back, noticing another rock, which was strange since she didn't remember seeing any on her previous searches for fairies. Oh well. Anna kept going, taking deep breaths and telling herself that this round was almost over, but the sinking feeling wouldn't leave. She started to feel a little jumpy, looking around herself at small noises, but there weren't many of those. The area near her was actually pretty quiet. Eerily so. Anna felt more and more nervous, which shifted to dread as she continued on. It didn't take her this long to get out here, did it?
As she continued on, Anna started to become overwhelmed. This whole tournament was just too much. Creatures attacking her at every turn, being injured repeatedly. It was amazing that nothing permanent happened, though that was probably part of all the planning they'd done. Wow, she was being pessimistic. A pounding started in her head and Anna decided she was thinking too much, but at the same time she couldn't stop. After a bit, everything seemed to get too overwhelming and Anna sank to her knees, trying to fight off the despair, but knowing she was failing at the same time. There was no point. She couldn't do this anymore; Anna was done with the task, in fact with the entire tournament. It wasn't worth it.
All of a sudden, Anna heard a cry. Turning, she saw a small, hairy creature with a large grey head charging her. Her eyes widened in surprise as the creature jumped toward her. She turned quickly, momentarily forgetting her hopelessness as adrenaline started to surge through her veins once more. She was being attacked. The creature missed, spun around quickly and headed for her once more. Anna threw out her hands to help block herself from the creature, momentarily forgetting that she was holding the fairies in her hands. The two fairies in her left hand flew away quickly and Anna found herself just holding the blue one now as the creature rounded for her again. She thought she recognized it as a Pogrebin. They learned about those in class. If she was right ... Anna directed a good, solid kick in its direction and felt her foot connect with the creature. Giving a loud, shrieking cry, it turned and ran away.
As soon as it got a distance away, Anna felt the sense of doom start dissipating. The Pogrebin was causing that? No wonder things got bad. Now that her head was a little more clear, Anna hurried back to her base. Almost as soon as she got there, she heard the gong sound. This time it sounded a little different and Anna knew what it meant almost instantly: the task was over. Smiling in relief, she leaned against her cage, waiting to see what came next.
