She was quiet for the longest moment and Zaire reveled in it, eyes searching over the crowd and watching as they began to move forward once again. Bit by bit they were getting closer to the front of it and soon he wouldn't have to deal with her random need to continue the conversation with him. He walked up a bit to close the gap in the line, reluctantly thinking about the things she'd said. Now he didn't have to wonder why he'd never associated with her before. He'd always deemed her to be an idiot, not that he'd ever actually noticed her before he'd been forced to even though she was in his house, he'd never felt that she'd actually belonged there. In his head, she was practically alone. Maybe that was why she'd chosen to speak to him. She didn't have anyone else to talk to. Ugh. She chose then to speak again and he rolled his eyes for what felt like that 10th time since she'd cornered him. For a moment it seemed like she was done speaking then, and started to let himself settle in the quiet before she spoke again, asking him if the ministry's plan had worked. How she still managed to sound so lost, he wasn't sure. He gave a short shrug in response because he was tired of the conversation. That is, until she opened her mouth again. She she comes back, she'd said. And there was not doubt in his mind the she the simple girl was referring too. He didn't react outwardly, keeping his body in check. He needed to be careful. This needed care. He had been responding, at least in part, to every thing she'd said so far. If he didn't respond, it would seem a little bit odd, wouldn't? And it wouldn't be wise for him to give his full allegiances away in this line. Of course he knew that purebloods were the only real capable wizards and witches out there. That didn't mean he had to endorse Elaine to this girl. He kept the nonchalant bordering on annoyed tone he'd been using the entire time when he responded. "Isn't that what all of this has been for? Isn't that what the ministry is supposed to be for? To protect us?" The ministry was stupid. And what Elaine had next, they wouldn't be ready for. And he couldn't wait. It was one step closer to those who were supposed to be in power.

“Isn't that what all of this has been for?” Zaire asked. “Isn't that what the Ministry is supposed to be for? To protect us?”
It was true that they had remained safe. Hogwarts hadn't been attacked all year, and—with only a month of school left before the summer—it seemed that they would make it through without another incident. The Ministry had been protecting them, though Max knew that the Auror patrols—however helpful they were in deterring anyone who wanted to cause chaos—wouldn't last forever.
“They're supposed to protect us,” Max said in agreement, “but… they can't act like we didn't see everything before.” The Ministry, in other words, couldn't shelter them. They could try, perhaps, but it seemed like a waste of time and resources to try to convince an entire school that everything would be perfectly fine, in spite of the murders and the kidnappings and the explosion at King's Cross. “But they're not going to say anything until she's dead or locked up in Azkaban.” Unless Elaine Dupree had hidden herself in some remote location without access to the Daily Prophet, Max didn't think that the Ministry would risk letting a fugitive in on their plans to thwart her.
“Maybe I've been too busy revising for History of Magic,” Max went on, attempting to make a joke, “but history always repeats itself, doesn't it?” That wasn't to say that one of the Champions wouldn't survive the Third Task, because that must have been in the back of everyone's minds, but the wider themes were making themselves apparent.

Never. He would never let that happen. Not just him, most of the purifiers wouldn't let that happen. Elaine wouldn't fall, Elaine would fail. That was what crossed his mind as the Greyback girl alluded to it happening, alluded to Elaine dying or being locked up in Azkaban. She would succeed where Voldemort's stupidity and ego failed. Zaire nodded instead as she talked because she was right, the Ministry couldn't act like the events didn't happen. And the Purifiers wouldn't let them forget that they happened. Once they think they're safe, something else will happen. A threat. A reminder. A promise for more. Until they surrendered. "I don't think they know what to say. It's been tragedy after tragedy with nothing to show for it." he forced himself to sound sad about it but he really couldn't care less. Let the Ministry crawl around in the dark. They weren't going to find anything. Elaine had too much reach, she had too many resources. She was always three steps ahead. She gave that corny line about history repeating itself and he nodded once again. "Let's hope so." He didn't know what Elaine had next, but he hoped with left the Ministry on their knees. The line seemed to be moving at a slightly faster pace. Only slightly. He felt disgusted that he even had to allude to the fact that he wanted Elaine to go down. He knew he needed to have patience, and he did, but he couldn't wait until he didn't have to hide it anymore.

“I don't think they know what to say,” Zaire contributed, and Max was willing to give the Ministry the benefit of the doubt. Sure, they had employees whose sole purpose was to inform the public about what the Ministry needed to relay, but sometimes that was nothing more than issuing reminders about wizarding secrecy and how this activity or that creature needed to be licensed—little things that didn't have much bearing on her life but that had been violated enough that someone felt the need to say something to drill it into people's heads that they needed to use more caution.
“It's been tragedy after tragedy with nothing to show for it.”
Max could only hope that the silence from the Ministry was because they were onto something. If Hogwarts students were turning into mini Elaines right and left—which they weren't—then maybe the Ministry would have felt the need to speak up. “They want to make us look good.” The whole world had its eyes on the Tournament and Britain's handling of it. The last thing that the Ministry was going to do was to continue to comment on the kidnappings or murders. Parents throughout Europe would want to know what was happening to their children while they were visiting Hogwarts, and—truly—the school didn't need any more negative press.
As for the repetition of history, Zaire said that he hoped that history would repeat itself. Max, whose intention in making the comment had been to convey that she didn't want history to repeat itself because it meant that things with Elaine Dupree would only get worse before they got better, paused. Voldemort had been—ultimately—defeated, so she guessed that that was what Zaire had meant; she guessed that he was just looking at the bigger picture.
Seeing that the queue had moved again, Max stepped forward. “That she'll be defeated, you mean? For all we know, she could surprise us and just turn herself in, and life would go back to normal.” For the most part, things would be alright again. She doubted that Elaine would go down without a fight, but she wasn't much older than they were. For how long could a girl who wasn't yet out of her teens keep adults twice her age looking over their shoulders?

The girl made some comment about the Ministry wanting to make them look good and he wasn't sure if she meant the students or Hogwarts as a whole. It didn't make much sense to him because their silence left everyone in a panic. Then again, it didn't really matter to him considering he was on the side that was causing all of the panic. "Meanwhile all of our parents are left in a panicked state, wondering how safe their children really are at this school," he commented darkly instead. He had overheard a few classmates saying that their parents had wanted to pull them out of Hogwarts and homeschool them or send them somewhere else. That was fine too. The school probably didn't need them anyway. The line was starting to move a little bit steadier now; she moved up in the line and he followed just as she questioned his words. He quickly thought back over what he'd said, wondering if he'd made a mistake. "Voldemort was defeated, wasn't he? Unless I've missed something," his words were full of sarcasm and he couldn't settle on if that had been the right move or not. He hadn't said outright that he wanted Elaine defeated but he did stick to his words. Lying wasn't usually in him, but he would do what he needed to, when he needed to. As much as he didn't like it. Why was he even talking to her again? He picked back over the crowd, noticing that they were closer to the front now. Soon they would be inside and he would make sure he wasn't sitting next to her so he wouldn't have to continue the conversation.

“Meanwhile,” Zaire voiced, “all of our parents are left in a panicked state, wondering how safe their children really are at this school.”
Max knew that her own mother and stepfather were concerned for her safety. They had been since the first murder, yet they had never expressed a desire to pull her from Hogwarts. It must have seemed too drastic for them, Max thought, although they had neither the time nor the resources to work with her on completing her education at home. It was her mental health more than her physical safety that had seemingly become of greater importance to them after the events of the past few months. If they had discussed doing anything, they hadn't let her in on it, and Max wondered if it was because they didn't want to push her over the edge.
“The Auror patrols sound scary, until you bring lots of Ministry officials to Hogwarts. And then that justifies them a bit.” High-ranking officials—some of them from outside of Britain, probably—weren't going to risk their own lives. If any of them were killed or injured while carrying out business related to the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts, the resulting scandal would be greater than any students' deaths. It went without saying that they must have considered their lives more valuable.
The threat that Elaine posed wouldn't last forever. Of that, thought Max, she and Zaire were in agreement, but that didn't stop Zaire from being snarky in his reply to her. “Voldemort was defeated, wasn't he? Unless I've missed something.”
“Yeah, Shafiq,” she informed him, already a few steps ahead of him; he had missed something. “The queue's moved up again.” At least one of them had been paying attention to it; though, the nearer they got to being inside the Quidditch pitch and in the stands, the more Max was looking forward to finding someone willing to switch seats with her. As eye-opening as her conversation with Zaire might have been, that didn't make her any more of a fan of his.

He ignored the comment that she made about the aurors, partially because it was a useless comment, mostly because the line was beginning to move more steadily and he was more interested in getting into the arena and finding seat. "Sure," he replied distractedly anyway. He didn't even dignify her lackluster response with an answer. He rolled his eyes as she moved up to close the gap the line's movement had made and it continued on for a few short moments until they had reached the front. He nodded his head in greeting at the official who seemingly controlled the line's motion and as he got inside, it was clearly defined where the crowd for each champion was. There were signs and school colors strung out around the Quidditch pitch for each champion. The energy from the crowds was intense and the task hadn't even begun yet. He hadn't been lying before, he really didn't care about any of the champions but he was definitely looking forward to what the final task brought. He figured it would be something dangerous like the previous Triwizard Tournament, though he wasn't sure how they would put them in any more danger than they had during the second task. Thinking about it still made his blood boil. He looked at the Greyback girl once more before he headed off towards the stands. He figured this was where their time together ended. She would probably head over towards the Durmstrang area to cheer their champion on. Champion was definitely not the word he would apply to the guy. Shoving his hand in his pockets he used a quick gait to head to his seat.

Zaire, who—in Max's opinion—must have been trying to play it off as though he hadn't lost track of the queue, gave her a quick response. It wasn't much longer at all before they no longer had to wait. There stood the official, to whom Zaire nodded and to whom Max did, as well.
The seating, once they were inside, was clearly divided between school lines. Each seemed to have their designated section of the Quidditch pitch's stands. There was the deep red of Durmstrang—the same color as the paint on Max's own face—for Elias; there was the Gryffindor scarlet for Anna, and there was the light, airy Beauxbatons blue for Émile. Already, everyone seemed fired up and ready for the task to commence.
Max watched as Zaire started off to find someplace to sit. He, like most, was going to the Hogwarts section, she guessed. If she could find herself a seat directly in the middle of the Durmstrang and Hogwarts sections, Max thought, that would be perfect. Assuming that Zaire would veer off so that he would be firmly among the rest of their Hogwarts peers, she continued forward, keeping an eye out for a seat.
@zaire OOC: I think we can just end here, unless you want him to react to her going the same way?
