Getting over the absence of Adrian was difficult at first, but Lily was starting to figure it all out. The dating aspect aside, he was still her friend and what he chose to do was the right way to go about it all. The first few days, even weeks, were the toughest though, because convincing herself of that was painful. She knew all of that already though, and time healed it. It wasn’t like she would never see him again either. One day he would come back from America. If not, she’d find his address and stalk him. Simple as that. Escaping Lily Potter was harder to do than most thought. Once her mind was set, she was going to do whatever she could to get her way. The means necessary and the consequences that could follow didn’t matter to her at all.
Which was why right now she was going to Honeyduke’s to buy a boatload of candy. Sadness and misery were always filled in sufficiently with sugar and manmade energy. She could do with a little of that right about now and for the coming weeks. And who didn’t like candy? Dumb people. That was who. The Gryffindor wasn’t the best academically, but she wasn’t stupid. Sugar and candy was her motivator and enabler, and she was perfectly fine with that. Bursting through the door to Honeyduke’s, Lily took her first inhale of her perfectly legal addiction. The sugar in the air was practically made for her. Everything about Honeyduke’s was perfect. If playing Quidditch didn’t work out in the future, she had no problem begging her parents to let her work at the candy store. That would literally be the best job in the world. All the candy! All the people to talk to! Absolutely A-Okay with her.
Lily made sure that she grabbed one of the larger shopping baskets as she began her browsing of the billions of billions of wonderful candy bars and other sugary delights. There were certain things that had to go into the basket, such as muggle candy bars she couldn’t get unless she was home. Those took priority as she happily hummed to herself, oblivious to everyone and everything around her.

Albus wasn’t sure what possessed him to go into Honeydukes that day. He had a decent sweet tooth, but he wasn’t brave enough to want to push through the throngs of Hogwarts students inside the candy shop just to get something that was just as easily available via owl order. Once inside, Albus discovered that it wasn’t actually as crowded as he anticipated, probably because others had gone through the same thought process as he had about the candy store being too crowded. He walked right past the display of Chocolate Frogs, not even wanting to look at the candy. He was absolutely certain that there was some conspiracy, because every single Chocolate Frog he had ever purchased had contained his father’s card. Every. Single. One. Albus wasn’t an arithmancer, but he knew that had to be virtually impossible.
Once he was safely past the shrine of all things unholy (also known as the Chocolate Frog display), Albus was able to relax somewhat, and began browsing the displays of candy. He looked up at the sound of footsteps behind him, but was too slow to see the face of who had just brushed by him – all he saw was a flash of red hair as the person rounded the corner. Considering that most of the people with red hair in the school seemed to be related to him, Albus ambled around the corner, and found himself face-to-face with his sister. Al looked at her, and then at her basket of candy, which was practically overflowing. “If you need help eating yourself into a sugar coma, I’m always available.” He drawled.

After cruising through the muggle candy section, and practically filling her entire basket with the items there, Lily moved down the next aisle. This was the chocolate frogs wall! Letting loose a ton of them at the same time and then trying to capture them one by one was hilarious. Ticked everyone off in the common room though, because one or two always ended up avoiding her grasp and appeared later in the day. She didn’t care. It was the hunt that she was all about. Since she wasn’t allowed to chase things down as a wolf, she had to get it out somewhere. Chocolate frogs always seemed to do the trick. Plus, hitting them with levitation charms from across the room and right into her mouth was absolutely hilarious and the epitome of laziness. Hopefully nobody expected anything less of her. Back to the chocolate frogs though! The best part of them, aside from eating them, was getting the card inside. Seeing that goofy picture of dad moving around was always great. And the little description they gave him too! Lily tried to make sure that she collected all of those ones, tossing them all into a shoebox back home. One day, those would be super hard to find, and then she would have a lot of money by selling all of them. Muggles apparently did that with sports cards, so why couldn’t she do it too?
Shoving a handful of chocolate frog packages into her basket as well, Lily pushed by the only other person in her aisle and went on to the next one. She didn’t have time to stop and see who it was. Her candy was waiting! The next order of business in the new aisle was getting a sizeable amount of licorice wands. The more realistic ones were her favorites. Faking people out with them was a great prank for a laugh or two. Especially with the younger students. It was harmless, and in the end she always gave the licorice wand over to them to make up for it. A voice came from behind her as she tossed a few of the wands into her basket. “You? Sugar coma?” Lily almost laughed at her brother as she turned to face him. “I thought the only sugar you were trying to get was from Dusti,” she winked, before laughing again. “Kidding! Which do you think will knock you out first? A box of Skeletal Sweets or Sugar Quills?”

Albus narrowed his eyes at his sister when she made the comment about him only getting sugar from Dusti. Here he was, trying to make an effort to be a good brother, and she just made fun of him? She said that she was kidding, but it seemed like Lily was always kidding. Couldn’t she take things seriously every once in a while? Albus forced himself to take a deep breath in and let it out slowly so that he didn’t lose his cool on Lily. He was trying to be a better person and a better brother, and he didn’t want to start that by snapping at Lily. He pondered the question that his sister asked him – Skeletal Sweets or Sugar Quills? “It’s probably easier to eat more Skeletal Sweets in a shorter amount of time.” He decided. Since Sugar Quills were made for sucking on in class, they were hard to bite into, and therefore harder to eat several at a time. If his goal was actually to enter into a sugar coma, then Albus needed to ingest the highest amount of sugar possible in a short period of time. “Maybe I can just make a potion that will put both of us in sugar comas.” Albus said after a long pause. That seemed like it would be a lot more cost effective than buying the ton and a half of sweets necessary to sugar them both out, and it had the added bonus of giving him a project to work on in his spare time. That would keep him out of trouble enough that he probably wouldn’t end up shoving his foot in his mouth or further worsening his relationship with his family, he hoped.

Lily was too busy with moving onto the next thing to wait and see what Albus’s reaction to her dig about him and Dusti would be. Obviously she was joking around, though the rumor she had heard about the closet incident still made her simultaneously giggle and gag. Whether or not that was true was dependent on how her brother would respond to it, but she had done enough already today. No need to make Mr. Serious cranky just because she was messing around. They were here to get candy after all, and sugar was supposed to fix everything. “Skeletal Sweets it is then!” Lily slid her way down the aisle back to the shelf where the skeleton shaped candy was. There were a few already in her basket, but she needed more. Like, a lot more. There was no telling exactly how much sugar her body could withstand. Al on the other hand…she had a feeling that he would be tapped out long before she was. That was practically a given. It was also precisely why she had given him the option of the Sugar Quills. They were tame compared to the skeletons. The quills lacked a certain level of crunch that her teeth desired when it came to hard candies, whereas the skeletons were basically like biting into bones. At least that was what she had convinced herself over the last year. It made for a more exhilarating experience and took off the wolfish edge she sometimes felt coming on.
“Like Lucozade?” she responded immediately to her brother’s offer of a sugar potion. The muggle energy drink was her absolute favorite. Of course she was banned from having it for rather obvious reasons. But if Al could make it, there would be no need to sneak off and smuggle it back into the house during breaks. Getting it to school was way harder, and she usually only managed a bottle or two per term. They never lasted more than a day or two.

Lily was eager to agree that he needed Skeletal Sweets, and prompt began to half-run, half-slide down the aisle to go grab more of the candy. Al didn’t go with her, but when she returned to where he was, her basket looked much, much fuller. He was tempted to ask her a snarky question about how much candy she needed, but bit his lip to keep it from slipping out. This whole ‘being a better person’ thing was turning out to be a lot more difficult than he expected. Everything that he heard or saw made him assume the worst, and it was hard for Albus to break that sort of conditioning, even though he desperately wanted to. “Thanks.” Al mumbled, though he probably sounded too sullen for the thanks to mean much to his sister. He wanted to rip his hair out, because even though he was trying, no one was going to see it, and… ugh.
Lily asked if his theoretical potion was going to be like Lucozade, and Al didn’t know how to answer. “Sure, I guess.” He said with a shrug. He didn’t know much about Lucozade except for the fact that Lily wasn’t allowed to have it. He wasn’t that adventurous when it came to food and drink, so trying something crazy that Muggles had dreamed up wasn’t high on his to-do list anyways, even without knowing how the drink affected his sister. Albus was aware that two of his great-grandparents were Muggles, but considering he’d been raised by a wizard and a witch, he’d never been that in touch with Muggle culture. It was probably good that at least one of the Potter children had a fondness for something Muggle, even if it was only just cuisine. That would make their grandpa Arthur happy. “I can probably find a way to make it taste… what flavor is that stuff again?” Albus asked. He doubted that Lucozade had much of a flavor other than sugar, but hey, if he was going to bother experimenting with a sugar potion, he was going to make it even better than Lily’s famed energy drink, with an actual flavor and everything.

Had she heard that correctly? Did Albus Potter, her brother, say ‘thanks’ to her? That really was an important question after all, because she couldn’t remember the last she had heard it that earnestly, even if it was slightly mumbled. Lily plucked a couple more things of Skeletal Sweets off the shelf before skipping back down the aisle and dumping them into her basket. She could have easily done that the second she grabbed them, but that defeated the purpose of acting silly. Every action had to be done with the goal that someone was going to see it. Al was the perfect person for it too, because he always had the best reactions. “You’re very welcome,” she grinned up at him. “You’ll get used to that eventually. The best thing to do is spend time with me.”
Lily set her basket on the ground as she walked past him to look at one of the larger packs of candy. She was getting close to her limits in terms of money, so it was either going to be this lump of sugar or the Skeletal Sweets she dearly desired. This was always the problem she had coming into the candy store. Self-restraint was non-existent with her to begin with, and throwing candy into the mix was only asking for trouble. Not wanting a comment from her brother, she put the box back on the shelf and turned to answer his question about Lucozade. “Let’s see…there’s orange, cherry, pink lemonade, Caribbean crush…” Lily said, counting each flavor with another finger. “Basically a lot. And they’re great,” she nodded her head. If Al could manage to recreate it in a potion, that meant she didn’t have to worry about smuggling bottles of it into school. There would be a little more convincing needed to be done to get him to make a constant supply though, and she knew that was going to be the most difficult part of it. “Dibs on being taste tester. I’ll do whatever you want me to do if you can figure out a way to make it.”

Lily was smiling at him, and that was kind of weird. Not because his sister didn’t like to smile, but because normally he wasn’t the one she was smiling at – or if she was, it was because she was making a joke at his expense. Albus had made his decision to get better, but it was so weird, because it involved a lot more than just being nice to his siblings – it also appeared as if he was going to need to be okay with them being nice back to him, instead of just assuming they were preparing to pull some huge prank on him. Lily said that he would get used to her eventually, and Albus cracked a smile of his own. “Maybe this summer.” He said. It was difficult to promise spending time with his sister when he still had things to do at Hogwarts, but summer was on the horizon and he knew his sister was always looking for reasons to get out of their house. Whether or not his parents would trust him to supervise his sister, Albus didn’t know, but he was going to try anyways.
The answer to his question was a lot more complicated than Albus had expected, because apparently Lucozade cam in many, many flavors. The first few Albus understood – orange and cherry were normal, pink lemonade was a little more out there – but the last one flabbergasted him. “What the hell does Caribbean Crush taste like?” Al asked, spluttering a little. As far as he knew, the Caribbean islands were just that – islands, not a flavor. He wondered if it was one of the ridiculous made-up flavors, like blue raspberry. Albus wasn’t a fan of those kinds of flavors. Lily said that she would do whatever he wanted if he managed to remake Lucozade for her, but Albus had a condition to work under first. “You have to promise you won’t tell mum and dad.” The Slytherin said. Merlin knew their parents would be angry if they found out he was trying to supply Lily with an energy potion. He stuck out his hand for his sister to shake, aware that it was probably overly formal for an agreement with his sister but wanting to make sure they were on the same page.

It was surprise after surprise today apparently. First, Al had actually said thanks to her, and while that happened on occasion every now and then, the second surprise was that he actually said he might hang out with her over the summer. Normally she would have been joking about that, and maybe it was initially, fully aware that he would rather do his own moody thing or whatever he was trying to be these days. Now that he sounded like he was actually considering it though, Lily’s grin grew. “Really? Because I have like, loads of things we could do. Obviously you just have to trust me on some of them, but we probably won’t get too hurt,” she said quickly. So many things she could do with her brother! Mostly she just wanted to drag him around London and force him to do stupid muggle things and watch his reactions to them, but she was sure she could find something more dangerous if she tried. There was a world of possibilities out there after all.
Lily snorted as he asked what the one flavor of Lucozade was. “Language, Albus!” she yelled, definitely way louder than was allowed in most indoor spaces. She didn’t care. “And it’s like uhh…tropical? Fruity? I don’t know. I just drink it and it makes me all jittery and stuff.” There really wasn’t any other way to put it then that. Who actually drank those things for the flavor anyways? That was like saying coffee was consumed for the love of bean flavors. Only stuffy hipster snobs did that, and she was most certainly not one of those kinds of people. They ruined fun more often than having fun. “Lips sealed bro,” Lily smirked, pulling her finger across her mouth to imitate the zipper. That would be just as much of a secret as basically everything else she did in her life. Those were her awesome stories to tell people, not others to go around blabbering about. If their parents wanted to know, she would tell them, and make it one hell of a story at that.

Lily seemed overly surprised about him saying that he could spend time with her that summer, and Albus had to admit he probably deserved that surprise. He hadn’t been a good brother, but did everyone really need to bludgeon him over the head with it? Probably, Albus admitted to himself. He needed the constant reminder of how much of a jerk he had been so that he could constantly try to be better. No reminder meant he could continue living in blissful ignorance, and that meant no self-improvement… even if it did sound like an attractive option. Lily said he had loads of things for them to do, and Albus blinked. “Nothing that could get either of us killed.” He’d take the fall if he let Lily skydive and his sister ended up a pancake, after all, and he’d rather not have that on his conscience.
“You’re not my mum.” Albus said with a roll of his eyes when Lily reprimanded him about his language. He was seventeen years old – he was aloud to use the word ‘hell’ without his little sister tattling on him. And if she did tell their mother that he was using that word, then he would tell her the entire context of the conversation, and then Lily would be out of luck when it came to Lucozade. In fact, Al wouldn’t be surprised if the stunt would make their parents consider not letting her have anything of the drink whatsoever. “Tropical and fruity.” Albus repeated with a sigh. He wasn’t a flavor scientist, and that wasn’t much to go off of. Maybe he’d just dump so pineapple and coconut in his cauldron and call it a day. But no, Lily would whine about how it wasn’t as good as the real stuff, and Albus still did have his pride to protect. His sister said that her lips were sealed, and Al raised his eyebrow questioningly. He wasn’t sure how much of a secret his sister was actually capable of telling, but if she did end up telling their parents… well, it wasn’t like he wasn’t already in trouble with them anyways.

“Pssssh,” Lily rolled her eyes, a devilish smile forming on her face. “You know I can’t guarantee that Al. Just one of the perks of having me as a sister. Think of it as a reward for playing this game of life.” Laughing a bit at her stupid comment, Lily took a few deep breaths to get more serious. Obviously if he didn’t want to do anything crazy dangerous, she wasn’t going to force him. No one wanted to get killed from playing around, especially not by a prank or some crazy shenanigans or hijinks. She knew better than that. Dying meant no more playing around. That was that. The end. Unless there was another side full of fields that she could run across forever as a wolf. She would take that. Who wouldn’t? “Okay, okay. Nothing that could get us killed,” she relented. Had to make sure Al knew she was joking after all. She knew it could be difficult with her sometimes, with all the jokes she had and things she did on a daily basis. It was amazing anyone actually trusted her, now that she thought about it. Definitely her shining personality got through to most people. That had to be it.
Mimicking the motions their mum made when she was disappointed in one of them, Lily stared at her brother. Arms crossed, eyebrow raised, and tapping her foot, she shook her head. “Getting you ready for summer break Alby. Better have a job lined up or mummy is going to be hounding you nonstop.” As for her own summer, it was going to be spent wandering around trying to find people to annoy in London. All the soon to be graduates couldn’t escape her forever. One last pester before she would let them be for a year, and then once she was done with school, she would be right back at it.
“Tropical and fruity,” Lily repeated the words once again. “Like, I don’t know. Refreshing and a bunch of different fruit? Basically an island paradise in your mouth. Minus the sharks.” She didn’t need to repeat the part about drinking it because it got her all hyper. That much was clear already. “So you could do it right? And keep me supplied throughout the year?” The resupplies would be the most difficult part. She required obscene amounts of caffeine already, and their poor owls wouldn’t be able to carry in cauldrons of drink on a daily, or even weekly, basis. And absolutely no one would believe that Albus was going to Hogsmeade to visit his dear sister Lily. Not even she would be won over by that story.

Lily immediately said they she couldn’t promise that they wouldn’t get killed in whatever scheme that she had cooked up, and Albus gave her a withering glance. People often wondered why he got so annoyed with his Gryffindor siblings, but this was exactly the reason – they insisted on putting themselves in bodily danger, and expected him to go along with it. He had a sense of self-preservation, and that was something that was to be ridiculed, apparently. And calling it a prize in the game of life? Not likely. One reckless sibling Al could deal with, but he was reminded of why this whole ‘changing’ thing was difficult. Practically everything his siblings did exasperated him and reminded him of why he had decided to distance himself from them in the first place. Lily eventually said that she wouldn’t do anything that would get them killed, but the damage was already done, because Albus wasn’t entirely sure what was the truth and what was a fiction. He couldn’t read Lily, because his sister was almost always riding on some sort of high that he couldn’t understand.
Albus rolled his eyes when his sister began mimicking their mother. It was actually kind of scary, considering how much Lily had taken after their mother, appearance-wise, since she was the only one of the Potter siblings to have inherited the red hair of the Weasley family. She said something about having a job lined up for the summer, and Albus sighed. “As far as mum and dad know, I’m still going to go into Auror training.” He informed his sister. Of course, it was pretty obvious by his wording that that was no longer his intention. “She didn’t hound James.” Albus pointed out. His brother had taken as long as he wanted to get a job, so even if he didn’t get a job lined up, he would hope his parents didn’t hound him about getting one. That would just ruin his already fragile opinion of them.
His sister reiterated what she wanted from the flavor of her energy potion, saying that she wanted it to be refreshing, and fruity, and like an island paradise. Albus wasn’t the best with metaphor, especially not ones related to flavor, so his sister’s ramblings still didn’t give him much clarity – even if they did give him room to tease her. “What if I want there to be sharks?” He asked his sister. He could just throw in a little habanero pepper to add some bite. Maybe the pepper could keep her from chugging gallons of the stuff, too. Lily asked if he could do it, and Albus nodded. “Resupplying might be a little difficult, depending on how they handle the incoming mail.” Albus admitted. He had never thought that glass bottles were the most efficient for storing potions in, and mailing a hundred vials of fake Lucozade to his sister didn’t sound like a fun endeavor.

Another eye roll from Albus had Lily shifting her hips to reiterate her mum-mimicking. What a fun tongue twister that was. If she hadn’t been trying to be serious for like, ten seconds, she would have burst out into trying to say mum-mimicking as many times and as humanly possible as she could. But there were more important things at hand, like continuing her glare at her brother to nail down the thingy she was trying to get to. He said something about Auror training, and how they still thought he was doing that, and then tried to divert the conversation away from himself to James. She wasn’t having any of that. “James is James. You, are Albus,” Lily stated, poking him right in the middle of the chest and leaving her finger where it was as she continued. “They probably won’t care if you take a while to decide, but you also need to do something important.” Lily started to giggle nervously as she remembered that it would be her turn next year. “At least something more important than me. Can’t be too hard. Just use that noggin of yours and do some thinking.” She wanted to ask what he wanted to do, but there had already been enough smart talk from her to last the rest of the school year.
What if he wanted sharks…that was hilarious to picture in her head. Tiny great whites and hammerheads, their fins skimming the surface of the sports drink as it spilled into Albus’ mouth. There was definitely a way to make mini-sharks and add them to it. If Albus didn’t know, then Uncle George would. That was basically what his whole life was dedicated to anyways. Making stupid joke things for her to test run. She would absolutely play with mini-sharks. “We can arrange for sharks. I know just the person for it too,” she said, completely forgetting that all of her thoughts had been in her head. Sometimes they slipped out of her mouth, so trying to figure out thought from verbal communication was difficult every so often. “Just meet me here. In Hogsmeade. It’s not like it’s illegal for you to come visit your wonderful, adorable little sister once a week,” she batted her eyes at him for the full effect. That would beat having to send owls with vials attached to them. She didn’t want to make the poor birds do work she knew she could get Albus to do.

Lily reiterated that James was James and that he was Albus, and the Slytherin rolled his eyes. “I know who I am, Lily.” He responded. And he knew who James was, too, which was why he wasn’t all that surprised that their parents favored their older son. Albus wasn’t like either of his parents in the way he saw the world. He wasn’t a hero, nor was he ever looking to be. He didn’t crave adventure the way his Gryffindor family seemed to, and that put them at odds. Of course, there was a lot more hurt there that Albus didn’t care to think about at the moment. It was already hard enough for him to keep from snapping without dragging himself down with worries about the past. “I know what I need to do, Lily.” Albus answered softly. He knew what he wanted to do with his life, but he wasn’t sure that his parents would approve of his choice. He had slowly pulled back on his plans to move out of his parents’ place. Asking for a forward on his inheritance had been too forward of him, and he wasn’t sure if his chosen career would be able to support him and Dusti even if they did have a house over their heads. “You’re important, too.” Albus answered automatically when his sister said he had to do something more important than her. Sure, she was wild, and crazy, but that didn’t mean that she couldn’t contribute something meaningful to the world at large. It wouldn’t look the way that people expected it to look, but Albus was all about taking peoples’ expectations and shattering them, so he didn’t care about that part.
Lily said that they could arrange for sharks, and Albus forced himself not to roll his eyes at that. He was the one who had brought up the shark thing, after all, though he was curious as to who Lily was thinking of to add sharks into his drink. If he wanted to be rude, he could just add shark as one of the ingredients, but that would probably be unnecessarily expensive for a joke. Lily said that he could just meet her in Hogsmeade once a week, and Albus raised his eyebrows. “Once a week sounds excessive.” He told her. That would mean him having to brew the potion on a tight schedule, which might not be possible when he was working. “I can do once a month.” Albus offered, figuring that was a worthy compromise.

Albus stated that he knew who he was, and she pulled her finger away from poking his chest, just so she could cross her arms again. “Do you?” she asked. She knew who he was. He got annoyed with her a lot, and they didn’t always see eye to eye on things. He kept to himself, while she was all up in everyone’s business. That was how she liked it though, so trying to understand what Albus really wanted to find in himself was difficult for her to comprehend. She had always figured that because of how happy she was with her own life, she assumed everyone else could discover that for themselves as well. Or not. Most of the time Albus seemed to be on the latter half of it. He then added that he knew what he needed to do, and Lily kept her mouth shut. Sounding like a broken record wasn’t going to accomplish anything with Albus. “Awww thanks! I knew you thought that about me,” she gave him a cheesy grin. Whatever she did in the future was going to be full of excitement. What that was going to be, she had no idea. Going with the flow and wherever the wind took her usually worked.
But the more important conversation they were having was definitely the drink brewing. She couldn’t understand what was so difficult about producing enough for her every single week. That sounded easy. If only potions was one of her stronger classes, then she wouldn’t even need Albus. “You don’t want to see me every week?” Lily pouted. The odds of the puppy-dog face working on Albus was slim to none, but a guilt trip was a guilt trip nonetheless. One of these days she was going to have to master the crocodile tears. That would really sell it. For the time being, it would have to be the quivering lip and drooping shoulders to sell her sadness.
