Albus glared a little at his sister when she asked if he really did know who he was. He had been thinking about that a lot – too much to be healthy, some might say – but he really didn’t need to have another existential crisis brought on by his sister’s question. Maybe he didn’t know who he was totally, but he was getting there. Wasn’t the journey supposed to be more important than the destination for this kind of thing, anyways? Albus wasn’t sure he believed that, but in any case, finding himself wasn’t going to be his number one priority until after he was graduated and had an income and time to find himself. Albus supposed that was why people had midlife crises – they kept putting off finding themselves until they had more money or more stability, or more time, but then never got around to it and realized it when they were old and miserable. Lily gave him a grin when he said that she was going to do something important, too, but the effect was kind of ruined by her saying that she knew that was how he felt all along. That was the thing with trying to be genuine with people – they just shoved it back in his face with jokes and sarcasm. It didn’t do much for making Al want to continue on that path, that was for sure.
Albus sighed when Lily asked if he didn’t want to see her every week. “That’s not what I said.” He responded flatly. He had said that it wouldn’t be feasible, and that was true. He was going to be working, not gallivanting around Hogwarts doing whatever Lily did. He wouldn’t have enough free time to brew her potion every week, and if she actually stopped, and thought, she would realize that. She began to give him a face that was probably supposed to make him feel bad, but just made Albus roll his eyes. “I could just not make it at all, if you’re going to be so unreasonable.” Al said. Hopefully that would shut her up.

He didn’t respond at all to her comment about him knowing himself, and she figured as much. Albus never wanted to talk about himself. Always guarding those little secrets about himself up there in his head. What she would do to get some of those out of him…probably things that would require her tying him down or knocking him out, neither of which would be particularly easy nor something she would want to do to her own brother. It would be way easier if he just spilled the beans and stopped trying to be such an adult, if that was even what being an adult was about. She still had a few years to go before figuring any of that crap out though. One more year of school and then running around the world doing Merlin knows what to kill time until she had to actually get a job. Which again, could be literally anything. Everything and nothing interested her at the same time. Picking and choosing between which of those to follow was stupidly hard. Whatever her job would end up being, she would make it important even if it wasn’t, because that was what she did. Albus would probably settle for some boring Ministry desk job where he would file paperwork all day. She would rather die than do that for the rest of her life.
Her pout didn’t seem to have any effect on him (no surprise there), as he tried to explain that he hadn’t meant it that way. Obviously she knew that, but it was always worth the guilt trip regardless. The eye roll and subsequent threat made had her mouth dropping open. “No!” she shouted, not meaning to be as loud as she was. “I can be reasonable. See?” Lily followed up with quickly, wiping the pout off her face and replacing it with a smile again. “Take your time making it. Please?” She needed that energy-potion-drink-thingy like her life depended on it.

Albus’s threat not to make the potion seemed to have whipped Lily into shape, and she immediately screeched that he couldn’t do that. He was sure that there were some other patrons in the shop that were quite confused as to what was happening between the two siblings to generate such a reaction… but they didn’t realize that the Potter children were just very emotional people (as much as Albus hated to apply that label to himself). Lily said that she could be reasonable, removing the puppy-dog pout from her face, and Al had to hold back a laugh at the sudden change of demeanor. Sometimes it was ridiculous, how easy it was to manipulate Gryffindors – especially his sister. All you had to do was threaten to take away the thing they wanted in that very moment, and they were putty in your hands. Al was surprised to see just how malleable his sister had become, though. He hadn’t thought he’d ever see the day where his sister said please to him, yet here they were. “I will do that.” Al said when Lily said he could take his time on the potion. “I’ll spend the summer developing the recipe so that when school starts you can have an… immediate supply.” Oh Merlin, his parents were going to kill him, Al thought. At least he had done Potions projects before, so it wasn’t like it would be totally out of left field when he began spending his free time over his cauldron. As long as their mum didn’t find out, Al would be golden.

She wanted to growl at him. And not the cute, flirty growl she used with most people. Like the ‘I want to beat you up’ growl, because she wanted to do that to Albus right now. It was partially her fault that she had set herself up to lose on a bluff; he had his sneaky snake skills to slip ideas into her head that she wouldn’t get what she wanted if she continued to act like a brat, and it worked. Sixteen years and he was still getting one-up on her when she least expected it. Stupid Albus and his stupid brain. Despite her giving in, he still seemed to relent some and agreed that he would take his time over the summer to develop it. Mostly so she would have an immediate supply, as he put it. The thing was, Albus didn’t understand that his ‘immediate supply’ would be gone in a matter of days. He was better off completing tons of small deliveries to her throughout the school year than dumping her off with a boatload of the substance. Everyone knew better than to give her a metric crap ton of sugar and expect her to not consume it. Didn’t they spend the last ten minutes grabbing candy off the shelves of Honeyduke’s? Her basket was filled to the brim with literally everything.
But Lily wasn’t going to dispute the terms anymore. She was getting her supply, and she trusted Albus to make something remotely close to Lucozade. If he botched it, oh well. There were still other family members to get her the drink that would love to visit her every weekend. She actually would prefer that to happen, just so she could end up holding that over her brother’s head. Then they would see who would be the last Potter laughing (though the answer would probably be James). “Thanks for being the bestest brother ever, Albus,” Lily turned on the schmoozing again, managing to only go in for a side hug since her basket was towering with candy. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go burn off the rest of my money for the year and put myself into a sugar comatose. See you in like a week when it wears off.” Laughing at her own stupid joke, she waved goodbye and ran up to the check-out to purchase her glorious sweets.
