Today was like any other day. Classes were in full swing and people were getting ready to take the end of the year exams. Nevena would study went it got closer to the exams, but she honestly didn’t need to study that much. She never did and she always did well on her exams. There was one class that always got her and she did need to do a little extra in it, transfiguration. Maybe she would study some in the common room, though if there were too many people she would head to the library.
Walking down the stairs from the dorms with her book in her hand, she noticed no one was in the common room. She smiled and sat down on a couch next to the fireplace, with a comfy chair between her and the fire. She snuggled up into the couch and opened her transfiguration book up. She started reading the chapter that they were currently in. She didn’t know how long she had been sitting there reading. If anyone was to come in she wouldn’t know it.

There was something special about having the common room all to herself. Cordelia liked the serenity of the crackling fireplace and the softness of the chair that she was currently camped out on. She had dragged it away from its normal spot in the common room to a nearby corner, turning it around so that she could still feel the warmth of the fire from one side, but also have the escape of a cold, shadowy corner. The balance between hot and cold was nice, because it allowed her to retreat one way or the other if one became too overbearing. There was a certain threshold that she could handle before it got too much. Especially if she had the pleasure of having both her giant blanket over her legs and her cat curled up on her lap. Today, both of those things were occurring, and Cordelia was conflicted on what she would do if she got too warm herself. It was either her own comfort, or the cat’s. She wasn’t too keen on giving the orange tabby a chance to bolt around like the wild animal he was most of the time. That would mean having to move to stop him from disturbing any other Hufflepuffs that would occasionally sit down for a few minutes. While most seemed to have no problem with it, Cordelia preferred not to take that risk. She had enough trouble as it was trying to communicate with her classmates. Having to profusely apologize for her cat would probably be too much.
And yet, try as she might, Pyro still managed to bolt off of her lap the second she decided to switch from facing the fireplace to the corner wall. The cat didn’t like being sent to the chilly embrace, so apparently he thought it was better to run around like a crazed beast than to just move to the other side of Cordelia’s chair, which was still emblazoned by the fireplace’s light. She didn’t think much about the cat’s antics past that though, at least not until she heard the footsteps of someone coming downstairs from the dorms. That meant that her cat was more than likely going to harass whoever it was. Shifting herself around on her chair, Cordelia peered across the common room to see what was going on with the new arrival and Pyro.
