He didn’t blame her for being confused with what he had said, it was pretty confusing for him also. He had an appointment set up with a woman at the Ministry of magic thanks to her sister, whom he had ran into on his first night in London at the Leaky Cauldron. Hopefully, that woman would be able to put it all into order for him. He really didn’t know too much about his birth family or even what would happen when he found them, or, how he would find them. But it was something that he had chosen to do and it was something that he was excited to do.
“Um, no… well I don’t think so at least because I was still born in South Carolina...I think at some point they must have moved here… or something.” he said, reaching his hand back and scratching the back of his head in his own confusion and with the awkwardness of the conversation he just wanted something to do with his hands. “I don’t know where they are now… all I know is that they have two other kids and they’re both at Hogwarts, so I hopped on a plane and here I am.” he explained, maybe now his being here would make more sense to her. “It sounds crazy…” he sighed. “I just… I can’t not know… I can’t pretend like I don’t want to meet them.” and as much as he missed his adopted family, he was still a little mad at his parents for keep it all from him and his sister, who had also been adopted.

@luke All of this was mind blowing for her. She could only imagine what must have been going through Luke’s head the entire time she had been rambling on about stupid things she was dealing with. Discovering a family that you never knew about was…she didn’t even know if she could put that into words since it was something she would never actually experience. Finn nodded her head as she listened to him explain that he was born in South Carolina, which probably meant that his family was originally from there. Why anyone from South Carolina would move to England was a little confusing, but then again so had the two of them. There were younger siblings as well, which she could resonate a bit more with. If she hadn’t known she had a younger sister until her early twenties, she probably would have wanted to go find her as well. There really was nothing to lose at this point in life. And the worst that could happen? His family would turn him away again. As hard as that would be, it would clear up some confusion on the whole thing…
“I don’t blame you. I think I would too,” she said slowly, making sure to pick her words carefully. She still wasn’t sure how touchy of a subject this was for him, but it couldn’t have been that bad if he was talking about it. “That’s a lot to take in at once though. Kind of changes a lot of things, doesn’t it?” Specifically about how his family, or adopted family, took him in. From what she could remember, there weren’t too many issues there, and if there were, Luck had never detailed them to her. Having a birth family now as well…there was so much! Birth parents and younger siblings to add on to an already decent sized family, and then having to get to know them on top of that. “Is there anything else you know about them? Like a last name or your birth parents occupations?” Finn didn’t want to outright say that she had ways of finding people, but she kind of did. That was only if Luke was willing to let her though. At the end of the day, this was still his to conquer. She could only make it slightly easier.

Luke felt kind of weird just dumping all of this onto the girl over coffee, but she was an old friend, someone that he trusted, and honestly it was nice to talk about it with someone. He had talked with the woman at the pub about it on his first night before he decided that not everyone needed to know his life story, but that was different since she was a professor at Hogwarts and knew the students. She knew his siblings and confirmed that they were at the school. Getting all of this out to someone, especially someone he was going to start living with was a good feeling. It felt like a bit of weight off of him. Someone else knew. Someone who knew him and knew that he meant no harm to anyone in coming to find the family. Everyone seemed skeptical of him when they found out about his situations even though he only had the most honest intentions.
"I mean, yeah. I don't feel any differently towards my adoptive parents, they still took me in and treated me like I was their son... I am their son... but what gets me is that they lied to me. And not just to me but to my sister, Tennessee too. They adopted Tennie too." he admitted with a sigh. Adoption was a kind, selfless thing and they had been the perfect people to do so, but the lying about it for so many years was what ticked him off. Tennessee was only 2 years younger than Luke and had been adopted when she was 3 years old, meaning Luke was already adopted by the time that Tennie came to them. And their older sibling, Taylor would have been 3 or 4, young enough that he might not remember it being weird. "I know their last name is Linley and that the kids go to school at Hogwarts. That's it. I've got a meeting with a woman in the Ministry for Magic that I guess can tell me more." he admitted with a shrug.

@luke Finn took some issue with Luke’s concept of his parents, his adoptive parents, ‘lying’ to him and his sister. It wasn’t necessarily that they were lying, more that they were pushing off the inevitable of telling them about being adopted. She could see how that would be something difficult to comprehend at any age. They were still family after all, even if half of them weren’t blood related. “Did they tell her yet? I don’t really know when a good time for any of that would actually be…” Not to say that Luke looked like he was taking all of this well. It was probably a mixed-bag of emotions and thoughts to take in at once. Just listening to it all gave her that, so she could only imagine what he was going through, or rather, had gone through already.
They arrived at the coffee shop and Finn held the door open for him. With his siblings at Hogwarts, it probably wouldn’t be too difficult to find his parents as well. While the magical community in England was expansive, it was nothing compared to back home. She had plenty of friends spread across North America doing different things, and was still able to find them. Obviously having the perks of being an auror aided in that, not that she would ever tell them that. Unfortunately the magical governments had more than one way of locating witches and wizards when things went awry. Ways that she wasn’t particularly proud of using most of the time. The same kind that she could use to find his parents and siblings if he wanted her to. Before she could offer her services though, Luke continued on, stating that he had already been in contact with a woman in the Ministry. That could help, but even their reach was limited. That was why she had left MACUSA and refused to join up with the Ministry aurors. “If you need help or anyone to go with you to meet them, let me know.” It was still his journey in the end though, and she couldn’t take that away from him if he didn’t want her there.

Luke understood that it was a touchy experience and the subject of adoption at that was often one filled with controversies and differences of opinion. And he was sure that he’d get over his current, intense feelings of anger towards his adoptive parents, who truly were great people who cared about him and never, even for a moment, treated him as if he weren’t part of the family. Or Tennessee. “Yeah, she found out the same time that I did.” he said. “We found our birth certificates and everything sort of came out when we noticed that it wasn’t our parents names on them…” he said as they walked into the coffee shop. He had been so lost in his thoughts that he hadn’t even been paying attention. She held the doors open while he entered the cafe. He should have jumped at the opportunity to do something chivalrous. He never would have missed that if he was thinking correctly.
“Thanks - but I think it’s just something I’ve got to do on my own, ya know? I’ll be fine. I don’t know what got into me there.” he said. Maybe it was because he hadn’t yet really had a chance to just rant about it. He had ranted with Tennessee about it, but during that time, he was trying to make sure that she was okay and that she wasn’t feeling unloved or abandoned. He was close with all of his siblings, but this experience brought him ever closer to Tennie. “Hey coffee’s on me, alright?” he insisted, wanting to treat his friend after not having seen her for a while. It was nice to just have some familiar company now for the first time since he had been in this country.

@luke She wasn’t sure what was a worse way of finding out they were adopted: from their adopted parents sitting them down and telling them everything, or via the way that Luke had discovered it. Finn made a distorted frown of sorts at the thought of discovering something like that herself, but made sure Luke didn’t see it as he passed by her to enter the coffee shop. Once again, she found herself only imagining what that could feel like – and she would more than likely never understand other than from another person’s account of it. She didn’t want to keep prying into his family’s business, but there wasn’t another way for her to really get a feeling for how he was handling all of it. “Do you know if they ever intended to tell you? I mean, I suppose it’s better to find out now, in this way, than another twenty years down the road…” She had read stories about no-majs discovering they were adopted only when their parents died and they had to go through old documents. Surely it was better to heard everything from them while they were still around, then always wondering when it was already too late.
“Of course. You’ve got it under control. Or at least you’re convincing me that you do. I think I’d still be trying to process it all,” Finn said. Hopefully that would instill more confidence in him, if he needed it. His convictions were clearly strong, seeing as he had already moved to a new country just to find his birth family. That was more than most were probably ever willing to do. That and knowing how he operated normally, it would be very un-Luke to sit around and not want to figure out everything. “Thanks. A medium is fine,” she responded to his offer of buying coffee. A large would probably end up keeping her awake all night, not that she had anything to do the next anyways. Keeping a regimented schedule was what currently kept her sane without a job. “Not to jump away from everything we’ve been talking about, but I think we should nail down a good time for you to move in. Staying in a hotel can get expensive after a while…”

Luke hadn’t ever thought about the proper way to tell someone that they were adopted. But he never thought he’d need to. He figured that the best thing to do was let them since birth, that way it was all out there. He never thought it was right for a family to keep secrets from each other, that was the exact opposite of a family, wasn’t it? Since he never knew anything about it, and since there were baby pictures of him in the books as well as the pictures of his other siblings, he never had reason to suspect. “Yeah, from what it sounded like, they were gonna wait until Tennessee graduated and then tell both of us.” he told her. In a way, it made sense. They wanted to tell the two of them together so that they didn’t have to go through it twice, so that there was less of a chance of Tennessee being upset that they had told Luke and not her. So that all the secrets could come out at once and then get done with.
Finn commended him for having everything under control and he couldn't help a small sound escape his lips, not a laugh, not a sigh, possible something that hinted towards disagreeing, but also agreed that he was taking the necessary steps. He tried to figure out what was necessary to accomplish his goals. He liked to get things done, he was never a procrastinator and never one to put something off for another day. He nodded when she said she wanted a medium and ordered both of their coffees. He handed over the necessary cash, still trying to figure out what the bills in his wallet meant. “Oh yeah.” he nodded. “Well let’s see. How soon is too soon? I work over the weekend, but I’ve got a day off early next week.” he admitted with a shrug.

@luke Luke’s response made sense. Once again, she found herself at a loss for how to interpret it, seeing as she wasn’t adopted nor was her sister. At least she didn’t think either of them were. Despite the two of them being magical and their parents not, they still looked like them and always had. What a scary thought to have implanted in her head that was. “That makes sense,” she reasoned. “I can’t imagine what knowing would be like without her knowing as well. Not sure how fair it would be to either of you, you know?” Finn hoped that all of that made sense to Luke, because it kind of did to her. Just because they were adopted, they were still members of the family. She assumed things like that should be common knowledge amongst all parties involved. Secrets never served well in the long run. If she had been in the same position, she probably would have blabbed about it within a day or two, the guilt of knowing having eaten her alive. She couldn’t even lie about eating more cookies than she had initially said she had eaten.
Finn took hold of both coffees as the barista handed them over the counter while Luke finished paying. She held his out for him for when he completed the transaction. Contemplating when he should start moving in, she mimicked his shrug. “Honestly, I’m fine with whenever. I’d hate for you to have to keep paying for a room when you could move in on that day off. If that works for you?” Her schedule had literally nothing on it. Stakeouts and meetings could be pushed off. Luke moving in was way more important anyways.

The waiting made sense to Luke, a lot more so now, once he was past the initial anger and disrespect over having found out for the first time that he was adopted. But the fact that his parents had kept it from any of them at all was more of the issue now. He couldn’t know what they had been thinking. He could ask, but he wasn’t sure he wanted to know. All they had told him was that they wanted him and his sister to feel like they were equal members of the family and thus they never told either of them that they were adopted. They wanted them to feel like they belonged. And Luke had felt like he belonged, and then all at once he felt like an outsider. He had to imagine that Tennessee did too. But she was still back in America with the family. Maybe she was getting more information than he had gotten since she hadn’t run away like he had. He didn’t regret coming to England though, it was the right decision. “Yeah, it does make sense.” he agreed. Not really sure what else to say.
Luke paid for the coffee’s and then took his from Finn once he was finished. She insisted that she didn’t mind when he wanted to move in and he could do so on his next day off. He nodded. He didn’t have that much stuff, he didn’t think it would take more than one trip to get everything from his room now to the flat. And then he could go out and actually buy furniture as necessary now that he had a steady job and a source of income again. “Okay - I’ll move in on my next day off.” he agreed, taking a drink of his coffee. Feeling some pressure leave him as he did so. Things were falling into place. "Thanks." he insisted.

@luke Finn didn’t even try to hold back the grin that formed on her face as Luke said he would move in on his next day off. This was going to be awesome! Just like the old days, but with more freedom to do whatever they wanted. Obviously he still had work to attend whereas she didn’t, although that wouldn’t stop her from dragging him away on his time off. Catching up with school friends was always great, and Luke made that her second friend here, after Karen (and Kara). She was finding that it was easier to adjust to England when she had them to talk to, and the addition of Luke would certainly help, even if it was for her own selfish reasons. Having a little bit of home all to herself made the move that much more worth it. Leaving home hadn’t been easy, especially explaining to her superiors why she didn’t want to be an Auror anymore. The looks they had given her were still imprinted in her memory. If she ever attempted to rejoin them, there would definitely be some problems. Assuming the same people were still in power. Anything could change over the course of time. “You’re welcome!” Finn said, grin still cemented in place. “I know what it’s like, especially right at the beginning. And I can’t exactly leave you like that.” Her own experience had been made easier with the company of her dog and owl, and occasionally Karen when she wasn’t busy, but that had been it. The only positive human interactions Finn had made since moving, had been while attending meetings with the Order. “This is going to be fun,” she added, a chuckle escaping from her as she took a sip of her own coffee. “Now that that’s out of the way, let’s discuss how we’re going to be moving everything over.” They had time to kill, and she wasn’t willing to put down a boiling hot coffee. Might as well get all the logistics down while they were already at it. [The End]
