Luke's question was accidentally a loaded one. There was no way he'd know about the whole.... drama behind her becoming a Hit Witch, so she didn't blame him. But it left her in a position of trying to come up with some sort of reasonable explanation. And it wasn't exactly working. "No, I didn't." She answered truthfully, deciding the most direct answer was the best. "I was an Auror before. Hit Witch suits me better." It probably sounded odd, giving up being an Auror for a Hit Witch. Auror's were well known. It was a 'dream career' for many people. Meanwhile Hit Witches and Wizards got lost in the Auror's shadow, but she couldn't exactly blame people. After all, their job consisted of putting down dangerous targets. No one glorified killing. So they glorified dark wizard catchers, forgetting that sometimes catching was impossible.
Claire's lips quirked upward in mild amusement at his words. "Never a dull moment." She answered. But a job that put your life in constant danger was bound to be exciting, a little too exciting for some people. Her parents hated it, but at least their son had decided to join the Auror's program. They could still get an Auror in the family. It just wouldn't be her anymore. She was bound for bigger things. And it'd all started when she realized she had no problem putting down a target.

Luke was a bit surprised how open she was with sharing her career. It seemed to him, without knowing much about how the ministry functioned, that a job like that would be one that people would want to keep on the downlow. It wouldn’t be something that you’d tell a stranger in a bar. However, maybe he was wrong. Maybe Hit-wizards and witches weren’t just people who killed people for a living, maybe they were just the ones that got called in when the aurors needed help and didn’t have the necessary training to complete the mission, or, when they didn’t need to bring the criminal in alive and just wanted to take them out. Luke, who was never much of fighter, found all the careers like that interesting. And was glad that someone was willing to do it so he didn’t have to. “Well I’m glad you found your calling.” The American insisted. “I can imagine. You must work well under pressure then?” For having been in the house of the warrior in Ilvermorny, Luke wasn’t a fighter. He was protective and he would fight for things and people, but he wasn’t a physical, or magical fighter. He just never gave up and always pushed himself to do whatever he could to fix whatever the situation was.

Claire really wasn't shy about her employment. After your name got into a Daily Prophet article for killing a Purifier it didn't really matter. She already had a fairly large target on her back. His comment on finding her calling made her lips twitch a little in a smile. "You could say that." She answered slowly, though she wouldn't explain exactly how she found that calling. She wasn't drunk enough, nor did she ever plan on becoming that drunk. "It's easy to work under pressure when you know little else." the blonde explained. She'd always lived under the pressure of her parents. Do better in school. Work harder. Set a better example for her siblings. Being idle and not having some sort of pressure on her shoulders... She didn't really know what that was like. The most relaxed she ever got was nights like this, when she had a drink or two, before going back to her high stress life. "Sometimes it's easier to live with stress and pressure then to live without it." She added after a moment's thought. What would she even do if things changed? Anything less just seemed.... wrong and boring and useless.
