It was an odd time of evening for an owl to be hovering outside the dorm window. Still, mail had come at weirder times. Andy cocked her head to the side and then opened it, letting the owl in. Oh, she knew that owl. It was Arthur. Irinas curtains around her bed were closed so Andy awkwardly coughed. "Hey Irina, Arthur's here. He's got a box," she said. The bird landed on the window sill there. He looked rather proud of himself, Andy thought. And, she didn't want to pry, but she leaned forward to look at the box to see if there was some clue about who it was from. All she saw was: Irina, Alles Gute zum Geburtstag. Andy's eyes widened. Was that German? She had one guess as to who it could be from. A part of her really wished she wasn't here for this, but another part of her had been looking for a reason to get closer to Irina for a while now. What better reason than to be there for her when she heard from her ex-boyfriend who she hadn't heard from in months? Yes, this could be a good thing... If she played her cards right and was supportive. She just hoped Irina was going to be okay with this. But if she wasn't, Andy would be there. Irina Rose Krum

It had been a long day for Irina, as it had been her eighteenth birthday. She had gotten permission to meet her parents in Hogsmeade for a birthday lunch; though seventeen was a more important birthday in the Wizarding World, eighteen meant that she was a recognized adult in both worlds now. She had received a new, sturdy backpack from her father, one that she could take with her if she got into the Cursebreaking program on excavations, and her mother had presented her, in typical Elena fashion, a beautiful diamond pendant with matching teardrop shaped earrings. April was her birthstone, her mother reminded her with a smile. Irina had loved both of their gifts, but she could tell they were wondering if there had been anything from Daniel that day. She knew they didn’t know about his gift, or curse depending on which way it was viewed, so they couldn’t comprehend how he could just leave. Irina had done well getting back to her old life over the past few months, but she did allow herself to be a little sad on the way back to the school. She wondered if he had remembered it was her birthday; not that she was really expecting anything from him, but they had grown up together after all. After dinner with her sister, Irina trudged up to her dorm room, ready for a nice bath and an early bedtime. As she entered though, she first saw that she was not alone, and that Arthur was waiting patiently for her with a parcel. Her pulse began to race as she looked up at Andromeda. “Perhaps it’s from my brother,” she suggested, though the look on her roommates face told her otherwise. Taking a deep breath, she sat down on her bed and picked up the parcel. Hand shaking slightly, she looked at the note and recognized the language, and the handwriting. It was from Daniel. She stared at the box in silence for a few moments, then looked back up at Andy. “I don’t know if I can open this,” she said weakly. It had been what she wanted, hadn’t it? A confirmation that not only was he still alive, but that he remembered her birthday? Her fingers scraped the side of the box nervously as she looked pleadingly at her roommate to tell her what to do. @lestrange

Irina guessed the box was from her brother, and Andy couldn't shake her head like she wanted to. NO, instead she watched as Irina, hand shaking, looked at the note. Then, unexpectedly, Irina looked to her and said she didn't know if she could open it. Andy's brow furrowed and she nodded, "I... I can do it," Andy offered, holding both of her hands out. "I'll open it," she reiterated. She gently reached forward and took the parcel out of Irinas hands. She kept her eyes on Irina until the parcel was completely in her hand. Then, she looked down at it and slowly, carefully opened it. After removing the stuffing in place to keep the object safe, Andy pulled it out. It was a snowglobe, about six inches tall. It was a beautiful wintery scene with some trees and an igloo inside of it. Andy held it by the base with both hands, then looked up at Irina to see what she thought of this. Irina Rose Krum

Irina didn’t realize she was holding a breath until she watched Andy open the wrappings of the parcel, and let it out slowly as her roommate opened it. It took her a few moments to register what Andy was holding, as if her mind had tried to shut out a lot of what had happened in the beginning of the school year. Not because the memories were bad, but that they were good, so good that sometimes it was painful to even recall them. She leaned forward to get a closer look. It was a snow globe, with a few trees and snow and...an igloo. Irina’s face flushed pink unintentionally, and she sat back. “Igloo,” she said out loud softly, feeling numb.
A dry sob rose up suddenly from her chest and burst through her lips. Before she could pull herself together, the tears started pouring out of her eyes, and she wiped her cheeks furiously. “Sorry it’s just..” Irina trailed off, sniffling a little. She was friendly with Andy, but she didn’t know how to tell her that she’d lost her virginity to her boyfriend in an igloo they had made from hand under the willow tree last November. She hadn’t really told anyone about that really. “Igloos...were special to us,” she finally said softly, knowing Andy would know she meant her and Daniel.

Irina leaned forward and Andy held the snowglobe out, watching the fellow lions face. She blushed, commenting on the igloo, which Andy didn't get. Then Irina made a sobbing sort of sound and Andy jumped, startled, but made sure she still had a firm grip on the snowglobe. Oh no. Irina was crying now. Was this how people felt when Andy started to break down around them? Helpless and maybe a little awkward. Irina explained, sort of, that igloos were special to them. Definitely Daniel, then, Andy guessed. She knew that tone of voice. It was something like love. It was something more too, Andy was sure, something Andy hadn't actually experienced yet. Andy had a feeling though, because of how Irina was reacting. "He must miss you," she said firmly. There wasn't any point beating about the bush. It was clear from this birthday gift. Daniel didn't seem like the type to send it to be cruel. Irina Rose Krum

Irina looked up, her eyelashes damp from the tears she was trying to withhold. “Miss me?” she repeated, as if she was confused by the statement. After going so long without hearing from him, she had begun to convince herself that he was never coming back, and she had to move on with her life. It had been too good to be true; a romantic fairy tale story of the brothers’ best friend and the sister frolicking off into the sunset and their happy ending. Now? Well, Irina knew that the Cursebreaking gig was hers, and that was what her tunnel vision was showing for her future so far. And up until now, that had been okay.
She glanced down at the globe in one hand, and her other automatically went to her neck where the pendant necklace he had given her on New Years Eve remained. She pulled it out from under her shirt and studied it wistfully. “He gave this to me on the day we broke up. New Years Eve, but before midnight,” she told her by means of explanation. She gently set the globe on her bedside table and pulled open the drawer, pulling out the box it had been nestled in. “It came in this,” she added, extending her arm out so Andy could take the box. “It had a poem...a stanza of sort in it. It was his grandmothers,” she continued. She wasn’t entirely sure why she was telling her roommate about this; she liked Andromeda well enough of course, but she had always been closest to Anna out of all their roommates, and she hadn’t even told her about this. Her conflicting emotions she supposed were what stopped her, but she felt okay telling Andy about it. Almost like Andy was meant to be the one she told first.

Irina didn't seem to understand the concept of Daniel missing her, and Andy thought of a way to explain, but she waited. She didn't speak for a moment and Irina filled that moment with words, and a shared story, of her own. Andy leaned forward to look at the necklace, and then the box. "They're beautiful," she said. The necklace was his grandmothers, so that was kind of a big deal, wasn't it? Andy kept her eyes on the necklace for a moment, trying to think of how to formulate what she wanted to say... Once she had an idea, she looked back up at her roommate. "I do think he misses you. Even if he hasn't said anything... there are a lot of ways to miss someone," she explained slowly. "Last school year I completely shut Phil out, panicking when his parents had given us a talk about being careful since we lived together and all... I decided it was best to completely put him away until I could sort things out," wasn't that kind of what Daniel was doing? "And... even though I was horrible to him and didn't give an explanation... I missed him," she explained with a breathy tone, "even when he was across the room from me. I missed every inch of him, Irina and... even though it was my own fault I didn't have him..." she paused, looking back down at the snowglobe, "it's very possible for someone to miss someone, even if they're the ones who left."Irina Rose Krum

Irina gave her a small smile as she traced her fingers around the locket she had grown so accustomed to wearing. “Sometimes I move to take it off, but something stops me. Like….a part of me remembers what he said the last time we saw each other, and I just keep holding onto that,” she told her, feeling a little embarrassed to admit that out loud. She didn’t ever want to admit feeling weak, but it was like one little hump of hers that she couldn’t seem to get over. She had no idea what she’d do, how she’d react if and when she saw him again. Would she slap him? The thought had certainly crossed her mind more than once. Or would her reaction be one of mingled relief and bitterness? A hug, an awkward handshake, or, Merlin forbid, one ran away from the other? She was thankful that her friend had taught her basic meditation and yoga; without it she probably would have lost her mind by now.
Irina tilted her head to the side, listening in silence as Andromeda got what she was trying to say out of her mouth. A lot of what she was saying made sense; she hadn’t actually known about Andy shutting Phil out last year, though it made sense she supposed - it can’t be easy to be in love with your adoptive brother. But, in a sense, wasn’t Daniel like a brother to her? He was her brothers’ very best friend, and she’d known him since they were in diapers. Andy got to the point she was making; even though she was the one that had pulled away, she had still missed Phil terribly. Irina couldn’t know for sure if Dan felt the EXACT same way as Andy did last year, but the thought of it seemed to lighten the burden on her heart she had been carrying since January. “You make a strong case,” she finally said, her smile widening marginally. “Thanks, Andy.”

Andy could understand Irina not being able to take off the necklace. Andy would have behaved the same way, if she had something from Phil like that. Especially if he had left her the way Dan did. Somewhere in all of Andy's words and Irinas feelings, the girls were finding some sort of common ground. A bonding, something they had experienced only a little in the past. It was sad, in a way, that it had taken them seven years and several tragedies to get even here. Irina said Andy made a strong case and thanked her, and Andy nodded. "Listen, I..." she paused, her eyes finding Irinas and trying to convey her message just through her gaze... she wasn't sure it if was working. She wanted to say she was sorry for the years of silence, for not being a good friend, for not being a good roommate, for being nothing for so long. Nothing but silent, really. Irina sensed Andromeda was trying to say something that was difficult for her to externalize into words. She held her roommates gaze steadily for a few beats, and realized what exactly she wanted to convey. Irina wasn’t a mind-reader, but she had a hunch it had to do with their relationship the past seven years. They had been friendly of course, but never really had much of a deep friendship like she and Anna had, and she had always had a sibling-like relationship with Phil. Irina had always assumed it was because they were different, but over the past year she had discovered that perhaps the two were more alike than they had originally thought.
As Andy made to speak again, Irina was surprised to find that she no longer needed to hear it. That she had gotten the message loud and clear; Andy could imagine what this meant for her, and if Irina needed someone to talk to, she could count on her. “Hey, it’s okay,” she said softly. She reached out and placed her hand gently on Andy’s wrist. “Me too,” she added, smiling and giving her wrist a soft squeeze. Inhaling deeply, Irina took her hand back and got off the bed. “Well, I don’t know about you, but I could use a pick me up from the kitchens. I’ll see you later,” she said airily. She gently set the snowglobe next to her bed and took a good long look at it. She didn’t know what it meant, now or for the future, but if she had the right support system, everything would be okay. She looked back at Andy and gave her a final smile before disappearing through the door down to the Common Room.
