It took Luke a minute to truly catch on to what he had said. Oh crap. He had used a wizard word in front of a muggle! She would ask questions and then he would have to figure out how to talk himself out of that whole bloody situations and make en excuse to depart quickly so he wouldn’t have to report the incident. He had just got to England, he didn’t want to get thrown out already for being so reckless. However, when she brought up that she played Quidditch, he felt every muscle in his body relaxing. She was a witch! This whole time he had been talking to someone of his own kind. “Oh god, I almost talked myself into a whole with that one." He admitted with a sigh. “Gotta watch my tongue better, I guess.” he laughed, scratching the back of his head. She agreed that it didn’t work for everyone, having to know exactly what they wanted to do right out of school. “Yeah, I just feel like I need more time to decide and try some things out.” he admitted.

Jess grinned when the boy realized that he revealed he was a wizard. "Yeah, lucky for you that I knew exactly what you were talking about," she said with a teasing wink. "Any other secrets you want to get out of the way before they just slip out?" Jess teased. She hoped Luke wouldn't take offense because it was all meant in good fun, but she didn't really know him so she had no idea how he'd respond. She shrugged, "I don't think there's anything wrong with that. It's important to really figure out what you want to do with your life before you start getting into it." She gave a laugh, "And make sure that you have fun doing other things while you can ... like jumping in lakes!" Jess laughed yet again. She couldn't help it. She felt somewhat giddy knowing that she somehow found another wizard to spend time with. What were the chances of that?

"I'm normally a little more careful." He laughed, acknowledging that she was just teasing him and wasn't actually accusing him of having loose lips. He was glad that she was being such a good sport about it and wasn't someone that would try to report him for trying to expose magic to a muggle. That had never happened to him back home in the States, but he knew of a person that something along those lines did happen to. It was a lot calmer over here, that was for sure, which was great because he actually kind of liked muggles. She agreed that there wasn't anything wrong with taking some time, not that he was really looking for her to agree of disagree, but it was always nice to talk to a stranger who understood. She concluded by talking about jumping in lakes. Lakes? "Woah there, I agreed to a pond," he teased. "Lakes are a hole 'nother thing."

He said that he was normally more careful and Jess laughed. "I'm sure you are," she answered, still teasing a little bit, "but I'm glad you let that out this time. If you hadn't I would've gone through the whole conversation assuming you were a muggle." He probably would have done the same thing, which wouldn't be bad, but it also wouldn't be as cool as actually running into another wizard. She might actually get to see more of Luke, which would definitely be cool. Jess laughed when he started to tease her about jumping in a lake instead of a pond, and then rolled her eyes, "Lakes, ponds ... same thing. One's just a little bit bigger." Of course they weren't the same thing, but Jess was having fun messing around with him. "All right, I meant we should find a pond so we can have fun jumping in it," Jess amended, then quirked an eyebrow at him, "if you're still up for it, that is?"

Luke nodded when she said that otherwise she would have gone through the whole conversation assuming he was a muggle. "Yeah, me too. I didn't think I would run another another wizard like this in the middle of muggle London." he admitted with a smile. What were the chances? He was glad that she was a wizard, not that the conversation would have been any worse if she was a muggle, but there was something so much easier about talking to wizards as a wizard. plus, he hadn't had too much muggle contact over the past few years, except when working at the farm, and he wasn't as confident with muggles. "Yeah, let's do it! Do you know where any ponds are? Maybe at a park or something? I see ducks everywhere, there have to be parks around here right? I don't know the area." he explained. He was eager to do the deed and as time was passing and he still had to get to work in a few hours, he wanted to make sure he would have time to pop home and change before his shift.

She laughed when he admitted he would have treated her as a muggle as well. Of course, that seemed only natural. "I know. I guess you and I are just lucky," she suggested with a grin. Really though, who would have expected that kind of luck? To run into someone with magic when you weren't even really trying. It was interesting, to say the least. He agreed, sounding somewhat excited when he asked if she knew where any ponds were. "I think there's a park this way," Jess pointed to her left, "but I can't remember if there's a pond there or not. We should try it out," she suggested, starting to walk in the way she'd indicated, assuming that he would follow along behind her quickly. What else would he do?

He nodded when she said that they had just been lucky. True they had. Or maybe wizards just had a way of attracting each other. Either way, here they were now. She said that she thought there was a park over that way and they walked in the director that she was leading. It was nice to be with someone who knew where they were going. He had no idea, but he was happy to learn so he could apperate his way around London in the future. "From what I've seen of London so far, the parks are way different than parks in America. I mean, I guess here, what we call parks, you just call playgrounds, or something? We don't have a lot of the really big, massive expanses of grass and trees, mostly it's just little patches of land with some saw dust and a swing set." he admitted. He knew there were massive parks in places like New York City, and he was sure there was something like that in Myrtle Beach, likely downtown or somewhere, but the normal park was just a little play set, typically near a school. It was fun learning new things about this new country that he got to call home.

He started walking with her, which Jess expected but was glad for all the same. She was being weird enough without making things even more awkward. He started talking about London parks verses his parks at home. "Are there a lot of the playground parks in America?" She asked curiously as she walked along. "Wait ... so there aren't lots of parks with ponds in them and such?" Jess asked another question. She liked playgrounds just fine, but she didn't do much with them now. She was too old. Now she liked going on walks, which was better when you went to a park that had a pond or a garden or something. As they walked closer, she realized they actually were close to a park ... and it did have a pond. She laughed triumphantly. "Hey look! The park does have a pond. I was right!" She beamed at him, though she was really just proud of herself. Way to remember things.

Luke nodded when she asked if there were a lot of parks in America, it seemed there was one every couple of blocks in the residential neighborhoods. And there was always one by every school, he supposed for when the kids got breaks in their lessons and were allowed to go outside and play in the fresh air. Ilvermorny didn't have a playground, but they did have lawns and grounds, as he assumed Hogwarts did and the kids always went outside between their lessons, the castle was so stuffy. Ilvermorny was in a colder state than he was used to so the castle was kept very warm, but that didn't do good things for air circulation. "There are some parks with ponds and stuff, but that's not really the norm as it seems to be here... or at least in this district." he admitted. He had wandered through some of the bigger named parks so far in his stay and he had seen ponds and bodies of water in them all. They came into view of a pond and he smirked as she pointed it out. "let's have at it, then." he laughed, heading straight towards the water.

They were walking as he explained that ponds weren't really common in America. They were still there, but just not as much as in England apparently. The thought- surprisingly- made Jess feel a little sad. She loved the ponds and fountains. Mostly she just loved any kind of water. There was a special kind of beauty in it and she was curious why people wouldn't want to have it in their parks. Or maybe there just wasn't room for it or something. Oh well, it wasn't really something she should get upset about. "I like the water and ponds," she said simply by way of response. Then there was a pond in front of them and Luke pointed, heading straight for it. Jess chuckled, hurrying so she was beside him instead of behind him. "Okay, so are we just jumping in together or separately or ...?" she trailed off, a little surprised by how many questions she had. It wasn't like this was a big deal. Why did it matter how they jumped in. Wasn't the whole point to jump and make a new friend in the process?

They got to the pond and she had another question. She wanted to know if they were jumping in together or separately? "Well it might be awkward if we take turns." he said, teasing, of course. He hadn't expected it to be a separate thing. He had expected that since they agreed to do this together that they would see it through together? "Well uh, maybe we just go on the count of three?" he asked, looking at the water, which was a little murky. And there were ducks in the pond just a little ways down. It didn't seem very deep, but he had a feeling it would at least go to his waist when they really got into it. This was when it got a little awkward. He hadn't thought about the fact that they'd both be wet afterward and both of their clothes would be sticking to their bodies. He was fairly confident, but being in a new place, that wasn't particularly warm, and with a strange girl, put him into a slight uncomfortable place. "Just like run in?" he suggested. He waited for her to answer before starting the countdown, "1... 2..."

Jess laughed when he mentioned that it might be awkward if they took turns going into the pond. Of course it would, she was being ridiculous. Honestly, she was just surprised that someone was actually going to do this with her and was a little worried that it would turn out really strange. Hopefully it'd be fine though. "Yes, you're right. Sorry, I don't know what I was thinking," she apologized easily, nodding emphatically at his suggestion of going in on three. Her excitement was starting to build at the thought of jumping into the pond. She nodded, "Yep, let's run in on three." He started counting, but the time before he said three seemed to take ages, so after a moment Jess said, "Three!" and started moving into the pond. She gasped a little at how cold it was, but soon enough she was in the middle of the pond, laughing. It went a little higher than her waist, but she now realized how anticlimactic this was. She'd need to remember this for the future: jumping into a pond sounded a lot more fun than it was. She turned to the boy next to her, Luke. "Sorry, I thought that would be a lot cooler than it was," she tried to explain why she was laughing. "Uhh ... if you want I'd be willing to buy you a drink at the Leaky Cauldron after we both have time to dry off and get comfortable again. Kind of a "thank you for letting me be crazy"?" She looked over at him, still chuckling a little at how ridiculous she was.

They ran into the water when she said the magic number. It was cold and it barely grazed his hips, but there it was. Why she had wanted to do so in the first place, he had no idea. But, it was fun, he supposed. It was a new experience that he at least had never had before. Now he could say that he ran into a pond in a London park. That had to be on the bucket list, right? It was now, if only so he could cross it off. “That’s okay.” he shook his head when she started to apologize. It was funny, at least, to see all the muggles walked by giving them odd looks for being in the pond, it was murky and he didn’t trust that the bottom of the pond wasn’t covered in slime and rubbish that idiots would toss in. She offered to buy him a drink in thanks, and, if he was wearing a hat, he would have tipped it to her. He needed to find more of a reason to wear his cowboy hat again. He missed it. His head felt empty without it. “I’d love that. But I’ve got to get ready for work pretty quick here. Another time?” he asked, fully intending to take her up on her offer.

He really didn't seem to mind her silly decision to jump into a pond and Jess found herself feeling quite grateful for that. The guy was nice and she definitely hoped to run into him again. In the least, she had a feeling they could be friends, once she proved that she wasn't really as crazy as she probably seemed to be right now. Oops. She might want to work on that so she didn't ruin other possible friendships. She smiled at him when he shook his head at her apology, saying it was fine. That was a relief. At least he didn't hold the fact that he was all muddy against her. He said he had to get ready for work and Jess nodded, "Oh okay, that's fine! Yeah, you should go get cleaned up," she giggled a little, figuring she was probably even a bigger mess than he was. "Just let me know when you can ... or maybe we'll run into one another again sometime," Jess added. She wasn't really particular about the details, just was looking forward to the chance to show him she wasn't crazy. --- the end --- @luke
