Peyton had left the evening feast in the Great Hall a little bit earlier than many of the others, and while it was mostly because she had taken her fill on food, it was also because she wanted to get some alone time. Sitting among her sister’s and friends, laughing as they talked and ate their fill of food, she took one final sip of her drink. With a quick smile, she excused herself before removing herself from the Hufflepuff table and made her way out of the room filled with the aroma of smells and the laughter of friends. Many of whom were speaking and laughing quite loudly, probably because the Triwizard winner had been of their school. She was happy for the winner, as was the whole school, but right now the peace would be best for her, especially for a small headache that formed in her head. It wasn’t long before the sounds and smell disappeared as the large doors closed behind her, bringing silence around her. And quickly she began to walk, her ponytail swaying behind her as she moved. Her hand delicately reached up and removed the hair-tie from around her thick mane of hair and let the wild curls fall down her back; a headache would surely be stopped from continuing once the tightness of the tie was gone. It wasn’t long until the brightly light area turned into the dimness of the dungeon, the same place in which the Hufflepuff resided. And it wasn’t long before she stood before the security device that stopped anyone but a Hufflepuff, and possibly school staff, from entering the dormitory. And soon, she found herself inside, the familiar and cozy common room welcomed her with a nice little fire in the hearth, and she smiled. The smell of the warm fire crackling made her smile even brighter before she made her way through the common room and to the female bedchambers, where she was welcomed by her young kitten laying peacefully on the bed. She smiled, scooping up the young kitten who curled into her body and purred blissfully, and then she quickly grabbed the book she was reading. She made her way back into the common room and quickly sat down on the many sofas that sat within the room, curling into her body with the book held above her lap and the young kitten, in which she had named Kitty, curled once more into the small cradle of her flesh. She smiled, reading the book and delicately ran her fingers over the soft fur of the gray shorthair that Kitty sported.

@peytonbainbridge Classes had finished early for Cordelia today. That meant being able to go back to the dormitory and taking a quick nap before getting up to finish some work prior to dinner. At least that had been the plan. Plans and the Hufflepuff never actually seemed to work out though. Waking with a jolt as her cat walked across her bed, her hand automatically snapped over to her wand and wristwatch, igniting the tip so that she could see the clock face. The darkness in the dorm should have been enough of an indication that it was night already, but the hands on her watch told her exactly what time it was. To be more specific, it was nearing the end of dinner. Groaning, Cordelia dropped her head back into her pillow as she stared blankly up at the top of her bed. This was a drag. Not being able to do the work she had planned was one thing, but to get food now, she would have to go into the kitchens and beg the house elves for something. Normally they were fine with that, but lately she had been pushing their kindness a little too far with her…experiments. She didn’t want to disturb their work unless it was absolutely necessary. That was the only way that they would stay on good terms in her mind.
Patting her cat on the head a few times and letting out an enormous yawn, she rolled out of her bed and grabbed the notebook that she was supposed to be using to take down notes for a class reading. Obtaining the correct book as well, the blonde slowly shuffled out of her dorm and into the common room. It was quiet, though not for long according to her watch. Once dinner was finished, the horde of students would be upon her. Glancing around the common room to see who else was there, she spotted another girl already sitting on one of the sofas with her own cat. Cordelia didn’t mean to stare for as long as she did, but she couldn’t help it. Seeing someone else with a cat that actually enjoyed being cuddled was like driving a dagger into her heart. Her own would do so on occasion, but he was too high energy and wild to be held down too long. She almost said something to the girl as she continued her stupid staring thing, but didn’t, instead looking down at the book in her hands, and then around the common room to try and find somewhere good to sit. Somewhere where she wouldn’t be disturbed would be great. Sitting out in the open like the other girl would only invite people to try and talk to her, and being put on the spot suddenly like that would never work out well in her favor.

The fire crackled, the clock ticked and the cat purred beneath her book as she slept soundly on Peyton’s lap. She knew that the time would slowly tick on, and eventually, the people of Hufflepuff would come shuffling in well-fed from dinner, but the chaos they would bring would both annoy her and her reading time, but also scare away her cat quite quickly. She was all but prepared for it, especially when her sisters would walk through the door and promptly drag her away from the sofa and her book. But the sound of footsteps coming from somewhere else, her eyes glanced towards the door. She frowned when it did not open, was there someone else in the room with her that hadn’t been there before? How had they gotten in? A small wave of panic set in, what if it had something to do with the killings and she was next? The sound of footsteps stopped, and Peyton didn’t dare move, but nothing happened. The clock continued to tick and nothing, so slowly she turned around to face the person. And of course, Peyton almost jumped when she realized that it was indeed someone there, someone that she had seen around the school and in the common room more than once. She swallowed, watching the young girl stared at her for a few more moments before she decided it was time to break the silence. “Are you okay?” she questioned the other blonde.

@peytonbainbridge Even though she knew that she was staring, Cordelia hadn’t realized that she was still doing it. Apparently she wasn’t looking around aimlessly enough, because the girl on the sofa piped up, asking her if she was okay. She hadn’t expected any kind of noise to break the silence, and stepped back slightly when the question was asked. Cordelia was almost offended that the silence was no more. Even with the clock ticking and the fire crackling in the background, the sacredness had been disturbed, and it was partially her own fault. Now they were both going to be acutely aware of each other. The Hufflepuff preferred being completely anonymous and hidden when working in the common room, but that was gone. “…uhh…” Cordelia started, unsure of what to say. Yes? No? Was it easier for her just to go back into her dorm now, instead of continuing to get in the other girl’s way? Was she even in her way to begin with? There were more questions forming than being answered, and Cordelia knew that she was to blame for that. “I-I-I’m f-fine,” she finally responded after a few more seconds of silence. There really was no other way to answer that. ‘Fine’ could mean a lot of things, and yet only a few things at the same time. Her very own universal word to answer in a million different ways. “A-Are y-y-you okay?” Cordelia bounced the question back, tugging on one of her sleeves as she stood awkwardly in the middle of the common room. She wanted to face palm after that came out of her mouth. If only talking when put on the spot wasn’t so difficult. Then she wouldn’t say stupid things like that.

Peyton had never been one for attention; she was one of those people that rather sit in the back and just be smart in silence. She didn’t like attention in class or out, and she wanted to wiggle herself out of her skin as she noticed the other girl from her house staring at her. People staring at her, she wasn’t used to it unless it was to tell her that something was in her teeth, or on her face, or in her hair. Quickly she licked her teeth, as if fearful that something was there. Instead, she was met with the girl’s voice, a stutter of sound before she quickly told her that she was fine. The silence that had come to her question and the girl’s answer, it had been enough to make the air stale and silent. Peyton smiled, nodding her head as if in a way to tell the girl that she was glad that she was fine. She thought that would be the end. Instead, she was met with the same question she had previously asked. Peyton’s smile didn’t disappear as she answered the girl’s question, “I’m great,” she said before moving slightly. “Did you want to sit?” she questioned, motioning to the space of couch that was next to the area she occupied.

@peytonbainbridge So maybe it wasn’t the other girl’s fault that Cordelia felt out of place and awkward. Being able to communicate properly with other people was the first step in eliminating any semblance of that fear, which would in turn stop her from asking stupid questions. The one that she had asked her housemate back was most certainly a stupid question, and Cordelia fully expected to receive an answer back that wasn’t quite as nice as the response she actually got. A normal person, meaning someone that wasn’t Cordelia, probably would have either already moved on and gotten to their work, or had a simple conversation and left it at that. Instead, she continued to stare at the girl as she processed the words ‘I’m great’. How was she supposed to respond to that again? She bit on her lip as she clicked it through her brain one more time before finally answering. “Th-That’s go-good.” Merlin have mercy on her soul. Stating the obvious once again was never going to get her anywhere.
The girl offered her a seat, and Cordelia drifted her gaze towards it. That was the good couch after all. But sitting meant talking, and while her housemate didn’t seem particularly imposing, and more of a sweet character than anything else, Cordelia still hesitated for a second. “I w-was g-going to d-dinner…b-but it’s uhh…” she looked at her watch once again, somewhat indicating the time. “K-Kind of l-late now.” It wasn’t like she was extremely hungry though, and if she was going to go to the kitchens, once the house elves were finished cleaning the Great Hall would be the best time. They actually liked doing more work after they were supposed to be done for the night, for some reason. Hours spent in there trying to escape the crowded dining hall led her to figuring out the best times to sneak in and grab a bite. Moving slowly towards the couch, she took a seat in the open space, her eyes shifting to the other girl’s cat. “Y-You’re l-l-lucky y-you know. M-Mine can’t s-sit still for l-long,” Cordelia pointed out, motioning with her finger towards the animal.

Peyton, noticing that the interaction between herself and the other blonde was moving towards the awkward side, hoped that her overly nice personality wasn’t going to scare her away. Peyton was someone that just sucked at social interactions with others, and while she was a nice person, there were times when she should just shut her mouth and let people go. And from the hesitation in the girl's eyes clear as day, she felt like inviting her to sit was overstepping some boundaries that were never to be crossed. But the girl responded once she seemed to compose herself, stating that she was going to dinner though she was late for that. Peyton frowned for a moment, why had the girl been hiding in the common rooms when dinner was being served, why was she waiting for everything to be done to head to eat. She wanted to ask, but she refrained from doing so. Once again, she didn’t want to scare the girl with her curiosity. Thinking the girl was going to leave the conversation at that, she watched as the other blonde moved towards the open space that she had left open and took a seat, Peyton almost smiled with pride that the other girl wasn’t going to abandon her and leave the conversation at an awkward stalemate. Instead, her eyes focused on the creature that currently was sitting in her lap, stating that she was lucky to have an animal that could sit still for long. Peyton smiled, “She usually doesn’t unless she’s getting pets or taking a nap,” she breathed out in a smile as she stroked Kitty behind the ears, hearing the young cats purrs. “I’m Peyton, sorry I didn’t mention that early,” she said with a sheepish smile on her face.

@peytonbainbridge So maybe she was slightly off about the cat being the calm type. The owner would know better in the end after all. Cordelia’s own feline typically just got in other people’s way if she wasn’t restraining him somehow. Pets and naps always succeeded in that. Unfortunately naps only lasted for so long, and pets couldn’t always be done when she wasn’t working on anything else. Pyro could sense the dedication and devotion that the Hufflepuff was putting into scratches and pets, because if he didn’t like the lack of attention, it was a paw batting or two, and then a wild run around the room looking for someone else to help him out. She knew that it was her own fault that he couldn’t sit still, since she didn’t have the ability to keep him occupied all the time. Maybe one day she’d get him a friend to hang out with, at least then they could pester each other instead of her constantly. It sounded like this girl’s cat was similar in that manner then. “M-Maybe the-they’re m-more similar than I th-thought,” she voiced, watching the little cat get her own scratches. If Pyro saw this right now, he would probably get jealous and try to steal the attention away from the other one. That was just who he was.
The girl introduced herself as Peyton, and Cordelia realized that she probably should have known that already. It was rather embarrassing not knowing the names of her own housemates most of the time. Especially as a sixth year. Other years and houses aside, she was pretty sure she knew all of her classmates…at least she thought she did. “C-Cordelia…and its o-okay.” If Peyton hadn’t given her name out, Cordelia would have never asked for it. She was absolutely terrible when it came to that level of socializing, especially if she had to ask personal questions. She didn’t deserve to know details about people she barely knew. “Wh-What’s her n-name?” The Hufflepuff asked, pointing at the cat. She liked knowing the names of animals though, mostly because then she could make connections with the owners through them. It was easier on her that way.

The little creature within her lap purred, loudly enough that Peyton could have sworn the whole castle heard it. Of course, Kitty adored the attention that she was getting, and Peyton enjoyed giving it to her. While she usually didn’t have the time during the week between classes, meals, exploring and even studying to pay much mind to the little kitten, she always tried to make room for her when she didn’t have time, and the cat was in glory. Peyton enjoyed this time with her little cat, the two of them curled up in the common room, Peyton reading and petting the little feline while she slumbered and purred. Not many cats were like this, sitting for long with this much attention. She once heard from a friend that their cat always hated being in the same spot for so long and always ignored the pets after a while, Peyton was just glad that she got the cat young enough to teach her in respect to long pettings and naps. The feline was her cuddle buddy, and she wouldn’t change it for the world. Peyton smiled as the other girl voiced the words that her cat and Kitty were more similar than she thought, and she smiled. The conversation quickly turned to that of introduction, and she was quick to learn that the young woman was named Cordelia, and she smiled. “Well—it’s nice to finally know your name,” she smiled brightly. Peyton knew most of the people in her house, usually those that she had classes with, but some people depending on their year she didn’t. Sure, she had seen most of them around, either in the common room, the dormitories, or even in the great hall, but it didn’t mean she always knew their name. The introductions were quickly changed from their names to that of the feline that was currently curled in Peyton’s lap. She quickly laughed, embarrassed about the name that she was about to reveal, “It’s kind of—her name’s Kitty.” The words came out of her lips just as she tucked a strand of loose blonde hair behind her ear, of course, she used the hand that wasn't being used.

@peytonbainbridge Cordelia returned a small smile to Peyton as the other girl said it was nice to finally know her name. Unfortunately this happened all too often, her earlier thoughts on how she should have known most of the house coming back to the forefront of her mind. Some would call that sad – sometimes she did as well – but it wasn’t completely her fault that she didn’t know what names belonged to which people. That required talking, and talking was tough for both her and the person on the other end of it. Conversations held with her required a certain level of patience from the other party. So far it looked like Peyton had that skill. Cordelia wasn’t going to push it though, assuming things changed from how they currently were. “N-Nice to m-meet you,” she stuttered, maintaining her smile still. Whether it was nice to know each other’s names was a debate to be had in her head later – the real question was going to be if she even remembered Peyton’s name ten minutes from now.
The kitten’s name was kind of…? Cordelia only had to wait half a second to hear the name, Kitty, but the odd hesitation and laugh that the owner let out kind of explained it all. The cat was an animal after all, she was under the impression that love and affection was all it really needed in life. Naming animals was their own way of labeling their furry friends. “I l-like it,” she said, not sure if Peyton was embarrassed by the name or thought it was silly to name a kitten, Kitty. “M-Makes it easier to c-call her I-I’m sure.” Unlike her own cat, who refused to sit still unless he was treated like a king. Cordelia usually capitulated and gave him what he wanted too.

Peyton smiled as Cordelia mentioned that she liked the name for the kitten, no matter how simple the thing was. Naming a kitten – Kitty – some people saw it as weird, primarily because of how it was just nickname for the longer word. Though, Cordelia mentioned that it was easier to call her, and she smiled, she had never thought of it that way. “I’m so glad you see it that way! People seem not to understand why I just went the simple route – leads into awkward conversations sometimes,” she said as a small blush tinted her cheeks before she cleared her throat. She tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ear before she spoke once more, “You mentioned you had a cat – right? What’s its name?” she questioned, curious if the girl had a much more creative name then her own.

@peytonbainbridge Naming the kitten Kitty lead to awkward conversations? Cordelia couldn’t really see how that would happen since it was extremely logical. Not everyone had to come up with a genius name for their pets. Sometimes the simple ones worked the best. One of her favorites had been a dog named Dog. That had been one from the neighborhood she grew up in. While her family was one of the only magical ones in the area, that didn’t stop her from running around outside during the summer and interacting with the muggle kids in the community. Dog, the dog, had been dubbed thee by one of the muggle children because it was his dog. Cordelia had always wanted a dog, but they already had her mother’s cat, who while extremely old and probably part Kneazle, was still a great creature most of the time. It still didn’t take kindly to her own cat. That was also because Pyro had an unlimited amount of energy and constantly pestered his older sibling. She had witnessed the old cat slapping the younger one plenty of times, usually following the orange tabby attempting to bat at the other’s tail. Pyro wasn’t known for his brains.
Speaking of Pyro, Peyton was asking about his name. “I d-do,” Cordelia smiled again. “His n-name is P-Pyro. It’s silly th-though, b-because I have tr-trouble s-saying it…” Her smile dipped into a frown briefly, knowing that it was completely her fault for choosing a name for the cat that she would have problems with. Stupid stutter, always getting the best of her even while she tried to conquer it. “B-But he’s an orange t-tabby. And l-likes to run a lot, so he l-looks fiery I g-guess.” That had been the reason she had named him that, after all. Like she had already said, it was silly. An eleven year-old’s logic when naming a pet didn’t have to be sound.

The moment that Cordelia told her that she named her cat Pyro, she was a little curious to learn where that name had originated. But before she could ask, she quickly told her that it was silly because she had trouble saying it, which caused Peyton to frown. “I think you said it perfectly,” she said with a smile, “And it is so not silly, I love it,” she said with the same smile that she held before, only it grew. Cordelia was quick to give her a little background on the naming process, telling that the cat was an orange tabby that looked fiery as he ran around and she smiled, “It’s a perfect name for a beautiful cat. I’ll have to meet him one day,” she said with a smile. Loads of students had cats for pets within Hufflepuff, so she wouldn’t be surprised if she had met little Pyro before among them all.

@peytonbainbridge Cordelia wasn’t sure why she always felt embarrassed to give out the name of her cat; as she had just been telling herself about Peyton’s name scheme, it didn’t matter what other people thought. Applying her own advice to herself probably would have been the best idea she had ever had. Unfortunately she knew she was too wishy-washy when it came to those things, and would most likely never follow through with it. It was so much easier to not talk to anyone, that way she wouldn’t have to give out her cat’s name, or the reason why she had named him that in the first place. Repeating the same story over and over again got redundant – going from the quiet girl that stuttered to the cat lady obsessing about how Pyro came into her life was too much for her. Peyton said she liked the name though, and that it wasn’t silly at all. The smile the other Hufflepuff gave her looked genuine enough. “Th-Thanks,” Cordelia responded, looking down at the notebook she had forgotten about since walking towards the couch. There was work to do still, and then dinner. Her stomach wasn’t sending alarms off demanding food yet though, so that meant she would be able to do a few assignments first. Peyton continued on as Cordelia shifted slightly to move the notebook in front of her, stating that she wanted to meet Pyro one day. If he hadn’t been so lazy when she left her dorm, he would have been out in the common room right now. “I’ll remember to b-bring him out m-more often then,” she confirmed, before standing up from the couch. “I uhh have to d-do some w-work though. N-Nice t-talking to y-you Peyton.” Giving her fellow Hufflepuff a small wave, Cordelia awkwardly moved her way over to one of her normal chairs in the corner of the common room, thinking the entire time that it would have been easier just to go back into her dorm to do work. Maybe later… [Cord End]

Peyton smiled as Cordelia thanked her, “You are very welcome,” she said with a perky voice and a huge grin on her lips. It was then that Cordelia told her she’d make sure to bring him out more often, and that made Peyton excited, “I’d love to meet him!” she said “Maybe he and Kitty will be friends,” she added with a small excited laugh. Not long after the words left her lips, Cordelia stood up from the couch and quickly told Peyton that she had some work to do, it was there that Peyton took note of the notebook the girl was holding, and quickly nodded her head. “Oh yes, of course, I didn’t mean to keep you away from your work,” she said with no ill-will in her voice. She understood that people had things to do, and she respected that Cordelia was doing her work, while other students would probably lazy themselves around. “It was nice talking to you as well, I’ll see you around,” she said as she waved back to Cordelia and watched her leave, allowing Peyton to go back to what she was doing moments before she noticed Cordelia.
