@karen Coffee. That was the only supplement capable of keeping Finn up late at night. She had tried to substitute it with potions of non-drowsiness and no-maj caffeine pills, but both left her feeling sluggish. Especially the potions. They had a bad habit of acting like alcohol on her, and blackouts frequented from overuse of them. So those had been immediately eliminated from her longer nights on the job. That had all been tested back home in New York City though. London was a little different from there. Coffee seemed more accessible at late nights for some reason, so there she was sitting in a diner reminiscent of back home. It was almost uncanny how similar this restaurant was to some of the ones she had frequented back home. One that she had become a regular at was practically convinced that she was an undercover police officer or detective, and would routinely give her free coffee or meals. They were kind of right. She tried her best not to pose as a no-maj officer though, because things got ugly when they stepped in. Her tattoos did enough as they were, and while she loved being able to express herself through them, there were times where both law enforcement and riff-raff thought they meant something else.
Finn had eaten dinner at the diner as well. A steak. She missed the ones from back home, but this place seemed to have a halfway decent one. The coffee was just the follow up to it while she waited for Karen to arrive. Or would it be Kara this time? At least it was easy to tell between the girl’s personalities these days. There were times during school where it was…difficult, to say the least. Wrapping both hands around her coffee mug, Finn pressed the edge of it to her lips once again, taking an elongated sip. This was going to be a long night.

Karen was the one taking over tonight. It wasn't that she didn't want Kara to have her turn but... she wanted to see Finn, too, and it was hard to during the day. She had eaten dinner during the end of her shift and was ready to head over to meet Finn at the diner. She had her glasses on, a sign that she was in fact Karen at the moment. Sometimes she honestly forgot about them, especially in school when her personalities switched without warning way more often. But, since she was in better control, it was easier to make the distinction with her glasses and with the way they had grown up to be very, very different people. Karen arrived, seeing Finn instantly. She smiled a little, crossing the restaurant to take a seat across from her fellow American. "Coffee?" she assumed. That was Finn for you. Karen didn't like coffee, really, it was a little blasphemous for an American, she supposed. But, she had really taken a liking to the tea obsession over here. finn kylie nottingham

@karen Finn looked up just in time to see Karen outside the diner. Sometimes she got lost in her thoughts and coffee. It was better to do it in a place where people weren’t trying to hex her. So that meant at home and in the no-maj public. No witch or wizard was that crazy that they would attempt to take down an ex-MACUSA auror in the middle of a British diner. At least she hadn’t met any with a death wish like that yet. There had to be at least one out there somewhere. While thinking through all of this, Karen entered the diner and headed straight for the booth Finn was sat at. “The greatest creation of mankind,” she grinned as she set the mug down on the table. “Still not your thing?” How someone could not drink coffee was, well, Finn didn’t know. She could put down the dark liquid by the pot if it was available. That was probably because she was a New Yorker. Coffee and bagels basically made up their chemical composition. Finn didn’t have a problem with that at all.
“Curse-breaking going alright? Looks like you have all of your body parts still,” she laughed, making sure to keep the curse-breaking part quieter than the rest of the sentence. There was always something they needed to keep hush-hush about when out in public. It was honestly a nuisance, but rules were rules. She had to abide by that standard no matter what, especially because of her former occupation. Probably wouldn’t hold over well if an ex-auror snapped the statute of secrecy. Oh the horrible things that the dark wizards would do then. There would be no telling what kind of hell would be unleashed.

At Finns words about coffee, Karen chuckled and shook her head. Classic Finn. "No, I'm afraid not," she answered, knowing that Finn didn't understand that. The waitstaff member came over and Karen simply and quickly ordered an herbal tea, nothing else, and then turned back to Finn as her friend asked about curse-breaking. Karen laughed, "I do, yeah. I think It'd look pretty cool without an arm, though... or with a mechanical one," she said with an eyebrow raise. "It's going well. I do all of the research part and then Kara usually handles the action parts, which can be sparing at time," she said, feeling a little bad for her alter ego. Still, she liked the work that she got to do herself. "And how is... you know, I'm not actually sure what you're doing here," she half teased, but honestly she didn't know what Finn was doing in England other than occasionally running around with Kara in the middle of the night. She didn't want to think about how terrifying that was for the people Finn and Kara went after... what a team. Yikes. finn kylie nottingham

@karen Tea it was for Karen. Things hadn’t changed after all. “Honestly, how do you keep yourself awake without coffee? There’s no way tea can replace it.” Unless her friend was also drinking it by the pot. That was possible. In the end, caffeine was caffeine after all. Finn made sure to snag another coffee from the waitress as Karen ordered her tea. The cup she had was on its last legs. The pearly white bottom was barely visible as she swished it around. This was her third or fourth cup at this meal alone. There were plenty others earlier in the day. Early meaning two p.m., when she had woken up. This was basically lunch time for her.
“Mechanical definitely. No offense, but you wouldn’t be that handy with only one arm,” Finn joked, hoping the pun held over well with her friend. “But that’s good. You know how I am. Research would drive me crazy unless it was for going after an organization or something like that. Kara is kind of the same way.” Her kind of research had to be in the field, roaming the streets and underbelly of the city. The type of thing that was seen in detective movies. Funny enough, she thought she looked like a detective half of the time, and so did the criminals that she took down. Who would have guessed she was one of the good guys in an underground bar full of black market dealers and petty criminals?
Now it was her turn to explain her job. Or lack thereof one. She was pretty sure Kara had never asked that question, but there was an understanding between the two of them that brute force said as many words as necessary. “Nothing and everything. If that makes sense,” she said slowly before finishing off the rest of her coffee. “I’m starting to go a little crazy without a job, but I’d hate to lose the freedom.”

Finn asked how she kept herself awake, saying tea could never replace coffee, and Karen just laughed. "Practice," was her chosen answer. Really, though, she didn't know. Especially since Kara kept the body up so late almost every night. It was a miracle, really, that she was still standing. She had contemplated this before and had come up short. But she still didn't like coffee. Finn agreed about the mechanical arm and Karen laughed as her friend said she wouldn't be that handy with only one arm. "Amazing," Karen muttered, chuckling still. Then Fin said that research would drive her crazy unless it was for undercover work, basically, and said Kara was the same way. She nodded, "exactly. And this is more... well, books and stuff," she admitted. And she loved it. Finn said she was up to nothing and everything and Karen raised an eyebrow. It didn't make sense. "So... you're just... robbing banks with Kara for money, then?" she half teased, but was partly concerned. Kara and Finn were good people, but... "Or rather, Robin Hooding it? Stealing from evil rich people for," she gestured to Fin, "the poor?"finn kylie nottingham

@karen Karen probably had the willpower and concentration of a highly trained monk if she was able to make it through an entire day without coffee. That seemed impossible to do, especially nowadays where there was literally a no-maj coffee shop on every street corner. Sometimes they went a little overboard and put them directly across from each other. Finn would be a liar if she said she didn’t spend an inordinate amount of money on coffee from Starbucks every day. It was starting to get to the point where the store closest to her apartment remembered her typical order. Not that it was anything special though – just a large black coffee. The fact that they would have it ready for her when she got to the register was impressive though. Making things easy on the baristas probably scored some brownie points with them.
“Books are fine. Just not your kind of books,” Finn laughed. Unless they fell into that strange category where she would be dragged in just by the sheer uniqueness of the topic. There were some weird things about magic out there, and getting caught up in their endless loop of books and papers was tough to break at times. “Fist fights and duels are still my thing. Sorry,” she wasn’t sure why she was apologizing. They understood each other fairly well, and Kara understood her even more than Karen did at times.
Finn almost spit her coffee back out at the robbing banks part. “If only,” she laughed, attempting to finish what she had started. “I have a decent sized nest egg that I’m going to start dipping into soon if I’m not careful,” Finn stated slowly, shrugging at the thought. “But live fast, die poor, right?”

Finn laughed, saying books were fine, just not her kind of books. Karen shrugged, "that's fair," she laughed. Finn said fights and duels were still her thing and Kara waved a hand, "don't say sorry, I like about you," she confirmed. She was sure the 'sorry' was just a force of habit, not that Finn was actually sorry about loving those things. That would be silly. Karen was just glad Finn wanted to be her friends, even though she wasn't like Kara. Karen laughed as Finn reacted to the 'robbing banks' idea. She talked about her 'nest egg' and Karen pursed her lips a little, "I'm not sure if 'careful' is buying nine cups of coffee a day. Coffee isn't cheap," she chuckled. She raised both her hands in a surrender pose at Finns last comment. "I can accept that. Just need to find somewhere I'd like to spend it. Might head home to visit mom and dad, and Alexis... I have a friend with a plane. He might take me."finn kylie nottingham

@karen It was strange to think that people would actually like her for being a physical brute at times. Obviously the people she had to chase down hated it, her friends and former classmates seemed to think that it was interesting. No one had ever pegged Finn Nottingham as the type to graduate and immediately go into the auror training. Hell, she hadn’t even thought of herself as the type to do that. But she had, and now she was working outside of the law on so many different levels. Funny how that worked. The whole notion that she could have been doing something else with her life right now, or even after getting out of school, was strange. Enough that she couldn’t get it out of her head. “What did you think I was going to do after school? I don’t think I ever expressed any interest in anything…” Maybe the only thing was sitting inside all day and avoiding human contact while playing video games. She could blame her parents for enabling her for the first eleven years of her supposedly normal no-maj life, all in good fun of course.
“Hey!” she grinned, trying not to start laughing again. “It’s more like seven cups a day. And most of those I make at home.” Trying to defend an addiction, even if it was only caffeine, was hilarious. There was absolutely no reason for her to drink that much throughout the day, especially considering her size. Any normal person like her would be wired off a cup or two for the entire day. Seven to ten cups barely kept her awake as it was. Trying to break that habit in the future was going to be a fun time.
Finn nodded her head as Karen said she understood the money thing. There was no use letting it sit and being afraid to use it when she wanted to do something. Spending didn’t always mean being irresponsible. She raised her eyebrows as Karen stated that she had a friend that could possibly bring her back home. “How’d you come across this friend with a plane? Those aren’t exactly cheap…” This guy sounded like he had a decent amount of money himself, and knew how to spend it. That was exactly what she had been referring to.

Finn asked her what Karen thought she would do after school, saying she didn't express interest in anything. "I guess I just assumed you'd save the world," she chuckled, "though, I assume you would be more interested in a less structured way of doing so. You just seemed... level headed enough but crazy enough to manage it," she added. Then Finn protested that she made most of her coffee at home and it was less than Karen assumed. Karen grinned, unable to help making fun at the girls addiction. "Such an american thing, isn't it?" she teased. She was American too, obviously, but it was still fun to make fun of her own country and their habits. Finn asked how she came across a friend with a plan, raising her eyesbrows. "He's a... we kind of ran into each other while Kara was out one night," she explained slowly. "For some reason I took over in the middle of it... so we met him. But that was before we had to go on that curse breaking trip to Norway," she had met Poe in early January but then left for five months for a job. "But we've reconnected and whatnot," she waved a hand, looking down at the table to try and hide the red growing in her cheeks. "I guess he's got a plane."finn kylie nottingham

@karen “Me? Save the world?” Finn laughed, contemplating the idea. Karen wasn’t necessarily wrong – she had dropped everything back home to come over here and do what needed to be done. Whatever that entailed. She still hadn’t figured it out in the last five months. As for have a less structured way of going about life, she definitely understood that. “Being a little out of it helps get the job done, though sometimes I wished I had gotten a comfy desk job and called it at that.” That would have meant less doing what she wanted, and more following the rules. Aurors had rules, but they didn’t always have to be closely followed. Now she was free to do whatever she pleased. “It is. I’ll always defend my coffee. Our founding fathers got one thing right about tea. It deserves to be tossed away.” Hopefully a bit of no-maj history didn’t go unnoticed with her friend. Those were the kinds of things she wished were taught in school, but weren’t for whatever reason. They needed to have an understanding of the people they were meant to integrate with. The no-maj borns like herself couldn’t bridge the two classes of people together on their own.
Finn was intensely interested in this plane guy that Karen was suddenly bringing up though. Running into him in the middle of a job? That meant he was either law enforcement or a crime fighter like herself. Or something else. Finn hated being as paranoid as she was sometimes, but it was a hard habit to break. Everyone she encountered lately was basically a criminal of sorts, herself included. Luckily her crimes were kept to breaking and entering to stop deals from being done, and probably magical assaults against the hardcore crowd. She helped the aurors though, so they couldn’t completely hate her for that. “So you’ve reconnected?” Finn grinned, trying to keep her smugness at a minimum. “Does that mean coffee, or like seeing him?” she pried more, narrowing her eyes at her friend.
Letting Karen sit on it for a few more seconds, Finn finished off of her coffee and collected her things on the seat next to her. Standing up, she stretched and pulled money out for the check that had been set on the table much earlier. “There’s this pretty cool place I’ve been going to lately to break up the monotony of work. Want to check it out?” Finn omitted that it was an arcade, mostly because it was one of those places normal, working adults didn’t find themselves. The establishment had been hard to come by, and the last time she had seen an arcade of this scale had been on a brief trip to California a few years back. This one was her new hang out, and she had absolutely no problem being the oldest person in there.

Finn was always so confident and it was honestly hard to keep up sometimes. Karen was confident, too, but... she was more reserved than confident, if she had to choose between the two. Finn was gentle about her confidence, though, more than Kara was. Karen shrugged, "desks jobs aren't all bad, but it's good to have a variety. Cursebreaking has both," she explained. In fact, Finn wouldn't be too bad at the job herself. Finn spoke about the tea being tossed away and Karen laughed, "well, I'm sure Kara would agree with you. Perhaps you two need to start your own Boston Tea Tradition and do some tea dumping," she chuckled. Finn then asked about reconnecting with Poe over 'coffee' or seeing him. Karen felt her face grow warm. "I think... seeing him. Maybe. Sort of? I don't know. He's so cute," she blinked after blurting that out without planning. "Um... yeah, I like him. I guess. He's nice. You'd like him. He's an auror," she wasn't sure if she had already said that or not... was it hot in there? Finn spoke of a cool place she'd been going to and asked if Karen wanted to join. She was sure Finn wouldn't take her somewhere totally terrible... "sure, I could use a little fun. I miss out on that most of the time," she half joked. Really, she was okay with her quiet life apart from Kara's... not so quiet one. finn kylie nottingham

@karen “See! Why couldn’t I do that? Still don’t know what I found so appealing about running around cuffing bad guys,” Finn laughed, shrugging off her choice of job. She wasn’t doing it anymore (at least not legally), so problem solved in her opinion. It had gotten old too. Six years spent doing the same thing was long enough. Probably after everything was fixed in London and she went back home to New York, it would be to the comfy desk job they were discussing. The aurors wouldn’t want her back if she got through this with any semblance of breaking the law. She had heard that they were more lenient at times in the Ministry, but MACUSA held them at a ridiculously high standard. If they had any idea what she was doing right now, it was probably grounds for instant extradition back to New York City and a criminal hearing. “That’s a good idea! Next time we’re both back home then. They might not like us doing it over here,” Finn laughed.
Finn practically jumped over the table when Karen said the guy she was seeing was cute. That was what she was trying to get at! “So a flyboy and an auror? Sounds a little too dangerous for me,” she laughed again. “I think I need someone a little less intense. To combat myself.” Having a clash of strong-willed personalities would never work. She knew that. It was the same reason she refused to even think of her male counterparts in the auror department as potential partners. As for being dueling partners, that was a completely different story. “You’ll have to introduce us then. If you don’t mind sharing,” Finn gave her friend a cheesy grin. She wanted to pick the guy’s brain on a few things concerning the auror processes in the Ministry. How they worked compared to MACUSA.
Her grin growing as Karen said she wanted to check it out, Finn moved towards the door of the diner. The walk to the arcade wasn’t that far from where they were – just around the corner and down another block from that. She had specifically picked out this place because of how close it was. “Don’t say that. I think you’re both pretty fun. Might be in different ways, but fun is fun no matter what,” she said as she briskly made the turn into the final stretch towards the arcade. The neon flicker was illuminating the street in front of them. There was no way Karen wouldn’t know where they were going now.

Karen chuckled as Finn wondered why she herself couldn't do a desk job, and that she found cuffing bad guys more appealing - even if she didn't know why. "Well, maybe you just prefer to be a hero. Not in a prideful way, just in a... helpful way," she guessed. For Kara is was all about the pride... she didn't necessarily not care about the individual, but it wasn't that important to her, either. At the tea dumping idea, Finn said she liked it and that it should happen next time they were back home. Karen laughed, too. "I'll put it in the notebook so she can bug you about it later," she said, whipping out the small notebook her and Kara used to write to each other and jotting down a quick note with her blue pen. Finn was rather excited about Poe, and about hearing of him. Flyboy... auror... yeah, that was about right. Finn said that was 'dangerous' and Karens cheeks flushed bright, bright red. "He's not that intense, though. I mean... not like, with me. I mean, kind of intense in a poetic way," she said, knowing she wasn't making any sense. "I'll definitely introduce you... and of course I don't mind sharing. I share him with Kara, so," she explained. "I mean, that isn't that bad. I thought it would be weird but... whatever makes Poet happy makes me happy," oh, had she mentioned his name to Finn before? Finn might recognize it because of the Order, even though Karen hadn't heard about it yet. Karen had know way of knowing if Finn would recognize it, though. Karen followed Finn toward the arcade, happy to be moving her feet for a bit. "Thanks," Kara said, blushing a little. They reached the arcade and Karen grinned, "I mean, I am pretty competitive," she said. finn kylie nottingham

@karen A hero. Finn wasn’t sure if that was the word she would attach to herself, but it made sense if she was seen that way. If being a hero was what she was as an auror, then right now she was a vigilante. Probably didn’t help that she had been calling herself that in her head most of the time while out patrolling dark alleyways and wandering through abandoned buildings looking for crime to stop. Too much time had been spent growing up reading Batman comics, and now she was trying to live vicariously through them in her own way. Having a costume would be the absolute limit to that though, and she had yet to reach that point. ‘Yet’ being the key word there. A few instances had called for changing her hair color, which was already a frequent modification as it was. Fake names and different hair colors were most likely the start to it all though if she wasn’t careful. “I like the helpful way. If only I had a vendetta or a dark backstory, then I could be a real hero,” she laughed. Keeping positive and upbeat prevented from either of those from becoming a reality, and it wasn’t like anyone would ever find an interest in her family. A bad guy killing no-majs was so cliché that it almost never happened anymore, at least not in America. “Sounds good,” she responded as Karen pulled her notebook out to write down the discussion they had been having. It was always fascinating to hear what the other ended up putting down in the notebook, and how one interpreted what the other was trying to say.
Yes! An introduction. She was sure she would hit it off with Flyboy, mostly because she trusted Karen’s choices. Her friend was smart, and letting the wrong person in was not something Finn could see her doing. Finn laughed as Karen tried to explain what sharing the man with Kara was like, and then called him a poet as well. If the pilot and auror gigs hadn’t have been brought up already, then she would have thought him being a poet would be strange. Clearly this guy was multitalented, as were Karen and Kara, though for vastly different reasons.
“Competition is good,” Finn nodded her head as she stopped in front of the arcade entrance. “So that is why we’re going here.” Pointing up at the sign, she grinned at her friend before entering the building. The bombardment of lights and sounds from the arcade machines was exactly how she had left it. It was wonderful.
