They nodded when he asked about the Arrows. So he HAD already told them. They wrinkled their nose at the mention of their classmates and he felt a slight glimmer of... something. It was hard to tell with how numb they were. But then, at the mention of Adonia, he definitely felt something come from them. He instinctively leaned back slightly, but then returned to where he was. Their eyes closed and his brow furrowed, accompanied by a frown. Guilt. Guilt was there. "There's nothing wrong with not thinking about Adonia and Brandon right now, Vi," he said. "You have every right to just worry about yourself. I do that all the time," he admitted. It was true, too. Sometimes it was impossible to focus on other people because of how badly they were hurting. It was just easier to worry about himself, and he didn't think that was a bad thing.

Viola tried their best not to glare at Dan when he said that there was nothing wrong with them not thinking about Adonia or Brandon. There was nothing bad about it, except that there was a chance that they were feeling just as lost as Viola was right now, and it was possible that they had no one who could come and find them. Dan said that they had every right to worry just about themself, though, and Viola’s shoulders slumped slightly. If they were honest, it would be easy for them to use their classmates – especially Brandon – as a crutch. They would worry about him instead of worrying about themself, and then not really think about their own pain until long after Brandon had healed. Viola blinked a few times at Dan. Maybe it was wrong for them to assume that their classmates didn’t have anyone to help them through the pain. If someone had told Viola that it would be Dan that they looked forward to visiting, then they would have laughed in their faces. But here he was, the only thing resembling comfort in a world gone dark. Viola offered Dan a smile – a real smile, not one of their half-baked expressions. He deserved to know that he was… good. For them, and for the world.

Their shoulders slumped slightly and he sighed, shaking his head little. He didn't want to make them feel bad. But then Viola offered a smile and he sat up a little more, leaning forward toward them. "Lovely," he complimented softly. He thought about touching them, offering a hand or something, but didn't know if they would like that. He didn't know if he would like it either. Maybe all those dormant emotions they were hiding would burst out and wrap around him like tentacles pulling him into a never ending pit of misery. He'd been to plenty of those, though, so what was one more? He held out a hand, but didn't make contact, "kinda calloused, but pretty warm. Not bad if I do say so myself," he mused about his own hand.

Lovely. When had been the last time Viola had ever been lovely? Even when they had been with Maria, they had never been lovely. They had been the water to Maria’s fire, there to quench her and compliment her, but never to be lovely. Oceans weren’t lovely – they were awe-inspiring and scary, but they were not lovely. Confusion spiraled through them, and their smile faded slightly as Viola tried to puzzle out what it meant to be Viola Chase and be lovely at the same time. Dan reached out his hand for them, and Viola hesitated for a moment, unsure if they were willing to subject Dan to the numbness that they were feeling. They had been happy, though, so why not? Viola tried to focus on their better emotions – their warmth towards Dan, the pleasant confusion at being called lovely, and all the things in between, before resting their hand on top of Dan’s. He was right – his hands were warm, and even though they were calloused, they felt familiar. This was the closest Viola had ever come since losing Maria to feeling like things made sense – to feeling like they had come home.

Her confusion and fading smile confused him, too, but he didn't dare question it. If he had done something wrong he didn't want to make it anyway worse, though he had a feeling he hadn't done anything wrong. After a moment, they did reach for his hand and rested their hand on top of his. He felt confusion again, but it wasn't painful or angry - so he could only hope that was a good thing. There was a kind of... admiration there, too, or something like that. He could tell their surface emotions were focused on something specific, maybe him, since he was there, but he wanted to try and find something more.
He slowly closed his eyes and tried to feel something deeper but... it was like nothing. Literally, nothing. He wasn't good enough at this to dig as dip as the emotions actually were. He opened his eyes again and gave a short nod, "you can tell me, if you want. I mean, not out loud but you can tell me."

While Viola appreciated that Dan was able to communicate with them better than literally anyone else in the world at that moment, there was a sort of sadness that came with trying to speak through emotions. They could only convey so much, especially when Viola wasn’t the best at feeling at the moment. But Dan had asked them to tell him, and Viola was going to try as best as they could. They closed their eyes so they couldn’t be distracted by the hospital around them, and focused on the warmth of Dan’s hands, the way his callouses felt against the softness of their palms. You make me happy. Viola willed their thoughts to turn into emotions, and willed Dan to be able to understand how monumental it was for them to be happy when the entire world felt like it was crushing them. With you, I can breathe. Comfort, familiarity, gratitude, hope, warmth, happiness, home, serenity – all of those feelings coursed through Viola, a rush of golden emotion that chased away the shadows, if only for a little while.

He was ready for a storm of pain but there was... only happiness. Well, wrapped around something else. A darker thing was lurking, but that happiness kept it at bay. Shielded them from it, even. There was gratitude and comfort, hope and calm... a surprising amount of non destructive emotions. Surprising to the point that his brow furrowed and he closed his eyes, trying to see if they were just faking it... they weren't. They really felt those things, if only for now. Dan relaxed his brow and smiled, but kept his eyes closed. "Not quite what I had in mind about sharing with me, Chase," he said, shaking his head a little. "But, honesty is the best policy. Or so I hear," he opened his eyes again and looked at them. "Anything else?"

Viola wasn’t sure what Dan had wanted them to share with him. Wasn’t it good that they were sharing good emotions with him, instead of letting him be bogged down in all of their bad? Viola gave him a quizzical look, hoping that he would elaborate a little more so the next time he asked for sharing they would know what to do. Dan hadn’t expected them to speak, had he? No, Dan wasn’t ridiculous enough to believe that they would start talking just because someone asked them to. If Viola ever spoke again, it would be because they wanted to, and felt like they could – not because anyone else pressured them into it. When Dan asked if there was anything else, Viola shook their head. They would feel more when Dan was gone, because he wouldn’t be there to shield them. But for now, this was alright.

They were confused by his comment, and he shrugged. "I just meant sharing the pain you're hiding from me," he said, not even realizing that this could sound insensitive. He just said what he said, not sorry about it. Viola shook their head when he asked if there was anything else they wanted to share and he nodded, "well, in that case," he pulled his hand back, letting out an involuntary sigh of relief. "We'll just keep talking about nonsense. Like nargles. I mean, do they really exist? Is that still up in the air?" yes, he did spend the rest of the afternoon talking about silly things, not really trying to break into their emotions anymore. But, when things were silly, that always made him feel better, so he went with that.
