Once she got the wrapping off, Kinsey opened to box to find a t-shirt with ... I heart Brighton? She turned to look at Riley, a smile playing at the corners of her lips. Did this mean what she thought it did? She pulled the shirt out of the box, holding it out in front of her and a card fell onto the table. Before she could open it, Riley explained that they were going to visit Brighton over the summer. She grinned at him. "Riley, thank you! That sounds," she hesitated to find the right word, "perfect!" She opened the card and glanced down, seeing receipts and train tickets. She closed the envelope, careful to not let anything fall out as she placed it safely in the box. She looked up at Riley again. "You should move your seat over here so you're next to me while I open these," she said, pointing to a spot right beside her. Really, she just wanted him close enough that she could give him a hug before she chose her next present. She laughed as she looked back at the shirt on her lap, hardly believing that they actually were going to do this. Kinsey felt so excited.

Riley smiled as he watched her with his arms folded on the table. He loved when she smiled. It brought a smile to his face also. So much of what she did made him smile. How he had got so lucky to have found her, he had no idea. None whatsoever. They had met in less than romantic circumstances and now they were dating and had been for a few months. How crazy. She opened the package and she loved it. He saw the excitement unfold on her face. He knew that he was going to get stuck doing something with his family that involved travel over the break and he wanted to make sure that Kinsey knew that he wasn't forgetting about her. So he wanted to make sure that she felt special, even with the school year coming to an end and with the possibility that they wouldn't see each other as often for the next few months. "Okay." he laughed, moving his chair over by her, happy to be next to her. "Open another one." he told her, smiling wider than maybe he ever had.

Kinsey watched as her boyfriend moved to sit beside her. The past few months with Riley had been amazing. Well, not the entire time, since they did get into that fight, but they were past that now and she loved all the time she spent with him. For the first time, she felt wanted and pretty and she owed that to Riley. She knew she lived almost six years hardly knowing him, but she couldn't imagine not knowing him anymore. Once he was seated next to her, he told her to open another present. She shook her head at him, "I have to do something else first," she said before wrapping her arms around him and giving him a big hug. She didn't care what presents he got for her, she liked them because they were from him and she wanted to make sure he knew she was grateful. "Thank you," she said as she pulled away. She looked at the remaining presents and chose the bigger one, pulling it towards them and glancing at Riley to see if his expression would give anything away.

Instead of opening another present like he had told her to, she shook her head and insisted she had something else to do. She hugged him and thanked him. He smiled and shook his head. He knew that he had gone above and beyond today, but it was her birthday and there was never a thought in his head about not doing so. "You deserve it Kins." he promised. "You deserve all of this and more." he leaned in and kissed her gently. When he leaned back out, she took another present, the large box. His favorite present. The one that he had known from the very beginning belonged to her. The hoodie from the very first night. The jacket he had been wearing and gave to her to keep her warm while she cried on the bench and he held her before the rainstorm set in and he brought her inside. It wasn't a big present, but it was meaningful to him. he wanted her to have it. He wanted her to keep that little piece of him with her. And he made sure that he sprayed it with his cologne before he wrapped it up.

Riley told her that she deserved this. She wasn't exactly sure what she'd done to deserve anything from him, but she wasn't about to argue with him and ruin all of his plans. The knowledge that she actually was going to get to see him this summer made her happier than she could admit. Sure, they talked about it a little bit, but he actually planned something out and bought tickets. It would happen. She smiled when he kissed her, feeling certain that this night couldn't get any better than it already was. Then she opened his second gift. She recognized it instantly and her mouth fell open. He was giving her his hoodie? The one from the night they met; the one that helped her sleep that night. Her surprise turned to excitement and she pulled the hoodie out of the box, stuffing her face into it. It smelled like Riley and her mind went blank as she held it. After a few moments, she lowered her face from the hoodie and looked over at him, her eyes wide and a smile on her face. "Riley, I ... I don't know what to say," Kinsey whispered, still holding the hoodie tight. "I mean, thanks," she looked back at the hoodie, slightly disbelieving. Did he really give this to her, for her to keep?

Riley felt a little weird at first giving her the hoodie. Mostly, just because he wasn’t sure if it meant as much to her as it did to him. Whenever he saw it he thought of her, because he had let her keep it that night and he almost didn’t want her to give it back. He loved the idea of her having it and it keeping her warm and being with her when he wasn’t able to be. He knew she suffered a problem with a bully and he wanted to always be with her so that she never had to go into a situation which might end in her tears. However, he knew he couldn’t always be there. But if she had the hoodie, even if her bully was being mean to her, she would have no cause to doubt that Riley loved her. Which, he knew wouldn’t fix the issue, but maybe it would offer some sort of comfort. At least while he didn’t know who the bully was and couldn’t do anything about it. However, by the look on her face when she realized what was in the box, he could tell he did something right, and he silently screamed inside with pride that he had done so. “Yeah, well I feel like it belongs to you.” he admitted with a smooth shrug. “It can keep you warm over the summer and such when I can’t be there.” he added.

He said that he felt like it belonged to her, that it could keep her warm over the summer and such. Her expression fell just the tiniest bit as she thought about that. "I'm going to miss you a lot," Kinsey admitted in a soft voice, looking up at him. He was right, of course. Without him around, she'd probably keep the hoodie close wherever she went, but it was still such a weird thought. He'd become such a large part of her life over the last few months and the thought of not being with him all the time was strange. She wouldn't have to deal with Dom either, which was a good thing, but for the first time she didn't want to spend all of summer reading. She smiled, "It's a good thing you got those tickets, so I know I'll get to see you at least a little." She tried to keep the tone light, not wanting to ruin all his work by thinking about the future. It would come. Kinsey didn't need to rush it. She bit her lip before asking him a question that should have been a given, but she couldn't help herself. "We will write over the summer, right?" Was that what couples did when they couldn't see one another? Kinsey wasn't sure, but she was certain she'd want to talk with Riley, since she wouldn't be able to see him daily.

Riley hated that he had made her feel bad, he hadn’t meant to do so, especially not on her birthday, but it just came out. And it was something that they should figure out at some point, but he wasn’t sure if he wanted it to be tonight. “I know.” he nodded. He would miss her too. He wasn’t sure that he had ever missed someone as much as he knew he was going to miss her. He never had a reason to miss anyone that much. “Kinsey we’re going to see each other.” he promised, taking her hand in both of his. “Do you think I could spend the entire summer away from you? I’m not even sure I can spend a week away from you.” he admitted. And then he sighed. “But I’m going to have to… a few weeks actually… my parents sent word yesterday… they’re taking Lydia and I to Switzerland this summer.” he told her. This probably wasn’t the best time to tell her, but the conversation had worked its way here. They were going skiing in the Alps. As a family. His parents obviously didn’t know or care that he hadn’t spoken to Lydia in weeks. “Of course we’ll write. But I honestly think we’ll see each other a little more than you think. At least I want to.” he insisted.

It was obvious that Riley could see where her thoughts were taking her, that his were almost on the same wavelength as he took her hand, promising that they would see one another. She nodded, watching him and smiling a little and shrugging when he mentioned Switzerland. "Well, you did tell me that your parents liked to take you around the world during the summer, so it's not really a surprise," which was true, even though she hated the thought of not seeing him for that long. Kinsey sighed, "I think my family will be having a small vacation as well. I'm just not exactly sure what we'll be doing." So it wouldn't be just him leaving. She nodded when he said they'd write, non-verbally agreeing with him. "I want to see you," she responded, squeezing his hand as she did so. "As often as we can work it out." Naturally, Kinsey would love an excuse to see him every day, but she knew that wasn't really feasible.
She took a deep breath, glancing back at the table in front of her and noticing the smallest package, the one that was still there. She glanced at Riley and smiled, "You ready for the last one?" Kinsey tore off the paper from his last present, not even caring about what was inside. She already had everything she could want. Whatever else he had for her was just a bonus and she knew she'd like it.

She wasn’t as upset about him having to go abroad for a few weeks of the summer, and for that he was thankful. He hadn’t imagined that she’d throw a fit or anything, but he had thought there was a possibility that she’d get sad or upset that they would be away from each other for so long. It seemed like she was expecting it, which made it a lot easier for him to tell her. And she was going on a little family trip too, which made him feel a lot better about leaving her. However, he wondered how well she’d get on with her siblings over the trip, particularly Diana after everything that had happened. “Absolutely! Whenever you want.” he promised again. That was the end of the conversation, she grabbed and tore into the small gift, and he gave a laugh. This one he had got in Hogsmead, and he had thought it would be the one she would like the most, but boy had he been wrong. Under the wrapping was a small box that she would probably recognize as containing Jewelry. And indeed it did. A delicate, heart shaped pendant hung from a silver necklace chain in the box. Something he wasn’t even sure if she’d want to wear. But he saw his dad get his mom jewelry every year and it seemed to be safe bet.

Kinsey's eyes widened when she saw what was inside the last gift. Sure, she didn't think she would care what it was, his other two gifts were amazing ... but so was this one. How come he knew exactly what to give her? She touched the necklace and chain slowly, turningb and smiling at him. "It's beautiful, Riley," she told him softly. "You want to help put it on?" She turned around so she wasn't facing him so he could do the clasp for the necklace. Kinsey wasn't really one for jewelry, but that was probably due to the fact that she didn't have much. She was certain that she was going to love wearing this around, especially during the summer when she wouldn't really be able to see Riley much. This was something she didn't have to take off, like she probably would his hoodie. Her family was going to think she was so weird. Oh well.

“Sure.” Riley smiled when she asked if he could help her put it on. He was glad that she liked it, or at least that she was pretending to like it if she didn’t like it. He knew that dressing up wasn’t entirely her thing, and he didn’t want to change that about her, but he honestly thought that every woman loved jewelry. Plus, buying jewelry for your girlfriend felt very grown up and official. They were already officially dating, but, in his mind, this was almost another level. He clasped the necklace around her neck and smiled. “That’s really all I had planned for the evening.” he admitted with a laugh. There was so much more he had thought about. A candlelit boat ride, a romantic stroll around the grounds. However, he had decided, in the end, to keep it simple (enough) and just allow them to enjoy each other's company. “Happy Birthday, Kinsey. I love you.”

Once the necklace was on, Kinsey turned around and smiled at her boyfriend, raising her hand to touch it gently. It was so pretty! Laughing, Riley told her that was all he had planned. "All you had planned?" she teased, not expecting an answer. "It's perfect Riley. Thank you so much." Honestly, she just wanted to spend the rest of the evening with him, and there was no way that wouldn't be happening now. She leaned over and gave him another hug once he told her that he loved her again. "I love you too,"she sighed happily. She couldn't imagine this going better than it did. --- the end --- @riley
