Cecelia was a vampire. She knew, intellectually, that she was a vampire, and that that changed everything, but in a way, the past three days had been an out of body experience. She had done what she did because she knew it was the right thing to do, not necessarily because she had wanted to do any of it. Cecelia knew that didn't change anything that had happened, but she still felt... weird. She knew that the Healers would attribute her discomfort to her recently-acquired affliction, but that wasn't it. She wasn't hungry for blood or uncomfortable because there was still a sliver of sunlight coming in through the closed blinds of the hospital room window. Cecelia felt strange because she didn't know how anyone would react to the news. She had sent out owls to her friends and family telling them why she had disappeared, and that she was okay, and not to worry, and all the other platitudes she was supposed to get so there wouldn't be a riot at her hospital door.
The only people she had actually invited to visit her in the hospital were Grey and Braelynn (though she had obviously extended the invitation to Zander, too, since it didn't make much sense for Bay's alias to visit on her own). She wasn't sure she wanted to know what everyone else thought. Waiting for someone to appear, though, was... difficult. Cecelia knew she was being paranoid, and that it took time for owls to arrive and people to read the letters. She wasn't being abandoned, people just hadn't received the letters yet. Bay and Zander weren't even in England yet! Cecelia had to reassure herself constantly that someone was going to come for her eventually as she waited, tracing the edge of the hospital blanket as she waited for someone, anyone, to appear.

@cecelia Grey felt stupid. Not because of the letter he had received from Cecelia, stating that she was in the hospital and had become a vampire, but because he hadn’t noticed anything was wrong to begin with. They had quite literally just gotten home from school, and then she was whisked away by a vampire for three days. He remembered from class that it took that long for a person to become one – the grisly process only served its purpose in churning his stomach over and over again. And here he thought trying to force his own body to turn into a bird was a detestable thing by some people’s standards. He didn’t want to think of what the vampire may have put her through in those three days, but it was clearly enough that she had decided to become one instead of the alternative, which was most likely death. That was the game played when it came down to it.
Regardless, the whirlwind of thoughts and emotions were shoved aside the second he finished reading the letter she had sent him. There wasn’t much in it, aside from why she was in the hospital and the room number. But that was enough for him. Telling his parents that he was going out for a bit, he quickly made his way to the hospital, not really thinking about much of anything as he went. He knew that reading her words on paper and seeing her in person would be vastly different; trying to comprehend Cecelia as a vampire was both odd and interesting. The letter wouldn’t do any of it justice, though he also didn’t want to treat her like some sort of exotic animal and that he was making a trip to the zoo just to see what she looked like now. There was genuine concern mixed in there.
The witch at the front desk pointed him in the right direction, and Grey sped through the hospital, despite only ever being there a handful of prior times. He could tell which room was hers, because there was a healer stationed outside of it. That was probably to prevent her from attacking anyone, as gruesome as that sounded in his head. Quickly explaining why he was there, the healer unlocked the door apprehensively. Grey pushed his way past, and through the door.
She didn’t look all that different, sitting there on her hospital bed, from how she normally did. Grey assumed the physical characteristics of vampires weren’t always quick to set in. It had only been a few days since it happened after all. Taking a few steps into the room, he stopped a couple of feet away from her. He realized he didn’t even know what the proper way to go about all of this was. Physically she looked fine – maybe slightly paler than usual, and he could see a hint of red in her eyes, but that was it. “Hey.” Was his genius starting point.

Cecelia knew that Grey was coming before he came into the room. As much as she would have liked to say it was because she smelled him or something, she was making a concerted effort not to do any smelling of another person’s blood, or even the blood that they had given her at the hospital to satisfy her blood cravings. She didn’t want her life to change more than it already had, and if she was constantly focused on the way other people smelled, then life was certainly going to be different, and more awkward. No, the reason she knew that Grey was there was because she heard talking outside of her door. The Healers made a point not to talk about her case in front of her, probably so they avoided offending her, and outside of her door was close enough to in front of her that there were no conversations held there. The only reason people would be speaking outside her door would be if there was a visitor, and considering Braelynn and Zander weren’t expected in England yet, that really only left Grey. Cecelia was in the process of finding something witty to say when the door opened, revealing her boyfriend.
A breath rushed out of her in one relieved sigh, one that Cecelia couldn’t explain. She had already known that Grey was going to come in, but there was something so real about seeing him in front of her. It made her feel infinitely better, knowing that one of her best friends still accepted her. Grey’s position as her boyfriend wasn’t totally irrelevant, but it was his status as her friend that made Cece feel better. Grey began the conversation with perhaps the best conversation starter Cecelia had ever heard – ‘Hey’. “We need to stop meeting this way.” Cecelia said, trying to inject some humor into the situation. This was the second time in as many months that Grey was walking in to her sitting alone on a hospital bed, and Cece hoped that the pattern didn’t continue. Being in the hospital wing, or the real hospital, was kind of exhausting. Cecelia tried to find something else to say, but in the end, she was at just as much of a loss for words as Grey was. “Guess I’m a vampire now.” The two of them were quite the pair when it came to starting conversations in the worst way possible.

@cecelia Grey wasn’t sure what to expect from her. Whatever it was, it wasn’t the response that she came back with after his infinitely wonderful greeting. Chuckling, he looked down at his feet, nodding his head a few times. She definitely wasn’t wrong about that. Two hospital visits aside, there had also been the meeting in the Prefect’s bathroom back at the start of the fall term. Obviously he had been in the wrong by getting the password and managing his way in, but Cecelia had been an emotional wreck at the time. He hated the fact that this was now the third time where he was late to whatever had happened. The first was unavoidable because there was no way he could have foreseen it. The second was beyond his control because it was a Quidditch accident. This time though? He had sat at home, twiddling his thumbs while waiting for his training program to start, completely unaware of the fact that she had disappeared for three whole days until everything was said and done. That was the part that frustrated him the most. “Yeah,” he let out a sigh. "We really do.” There would probably dozens of hospital visits for him over the next few years. That came with the job. So the odds of this being the last one was silly to even think about. Hope had kept stronger things alive though.
There was more silence. He wasn’t sure where to go from there. He had questions, but also didn’t want to ask them. At least not yet. There was a time and place for finding out how this had all happened, and grilling her with them while she was still in the hospital and figuring all of this out would make him a shitty person. Cecelia broke it with a comment about being a vampire now, and he found himself nodding his head again. Forming the words was far more difficult than moving his head. That much had always been true for him. “I guess you are,” he confirmed, still unsure of where either of them were taking this. They could point out the obvious all day, and while that wouldn’t be anything new in terms of how their normal conversations went, he felt like there had to be something else he could say. “But you’re still Cecelia. And being a vampire won’t change that. Not for me, at least.”

Grey sighed after he agreed to her statement about needing to meet in medical settings less, and Cecelia let out a sigh, too. She knew that there were times when people went to the hospital for happy things, like births and… well, actually, it was really just births, wasn’t it? And Cecelia didn’t plan on having children anytime soon (and didn’t think anyone she was close to was planning on it either), so she couldn’t imagine a good reason to come back to St. Mungo’s for at least another ten years. Of course, Grey was also going into a line of work that was dangerous, but Cecelia would rather not think about that. She could handle being in the hospital much better if she was the one that was injured – Grey getting hurt wasn’t a possibility that she wanted to consider at the moment. Not when she felt so… fragile. Cecelia didn’t like ever admitting that she wasn’t strong enough, but the truth was, she wasn’t and she never had been. If she had been stronger, she never would have made an Unbreakable Vow, and then who knew how the past year would have played out. If she had been stronger, she would have told the vampire to go stuff himself, and then maybe she wouldn’t be in the hospital bed. But she hadn’t done either of those things, hence her being in her current position. If nothing else, though, Cecelia’s weakness had played a part in her becoming close to Grey, so she couldn’t regret it entirely.
In the silence, Cece wasn’t sure why she had even asked Grey to come. This was foreign territory for both of them, and maybe it would have been easier to process if she had allowed them some time apart first. Cecelia wasn’t the kind of person who needed her boyfriend at her side at any given moment. But, the Gryffindor thought to herself, even if she didn’t need Grey there, she was glad that he was. “Would be kind of a stupid trick to play.” Cece was sure that if she had busted out some confetti and a ‘just joking’ banner she probably would not have a boyfriend any longer. But it wasn’t a joke, as much as it still felt somewhat surreal. There was another beat or two, and then came the words. Cecelia thought that Grey’s confession that she was still Cecelia, and that her being a vampire didn’t change anything, was perhaps the nicest thing that anyone had said to her. For a moment, she felt like she was drowning, unsure of what any appropriate reaction to that would be. It took a surprisingly short amount of time for Cecelia to respond. “I’m glad that you’re in my life, Grey.” Everything was a little dark and a little scary, but having him there was like having a flashlight in a dark night – it didn’t suddenly make the sun rise again, but it illuminated the shadows and helped keep fear at bay.

@cecelia Cecelia didn’t respond to his statement, but he knew they were on the same page when it came to hospitals. No one wanted to be cooped up in a hospital bed for their entire life. Now that she was a vampire, there was still going to be that almost medical, sterilized feel to everything, or at least he assumed so. He was unsure if that was something that came along with the requirement of blood drinking, or the fact that she was here right now, and that was all he could associate with the newfound power she had. A past him would have called it an affliction, similar to what older texts and muggles considered vampirism. But it was something much more than that now, and it was very real in front of him. Afflictions were a sickness, and while she certainly was going to have a hankering for human blood in order to stay alive, being a vampire was anything but having a malignant illness. Like he had just said, she was still Cecelia, and that wasn’t going to affect how he perceived her in the slightest. There would be a change in lifestyle, sure, but that wasn’t a problem for him at all. He didn’t really like the new sleep schedule anyways.
“It kind of would be,” he cracked a smile at her. There were certain things that jokes weren’t supposed to be made from. This was one of those. If Cecelia was Lily Potter, maybe, but she wasn’t, and he knew there wasn’t going to be any hearty laughing over her now having fangs and the ability to turn into a bat whenever she felt like it. Unfortunately they had to be serious about this, and for once in his life he couldn’t simply shrug it off like he did with everything else. Stepping closer to her bed, he sat down on it next to her. If one of the healers had be in there, they probably would have advised him not to do that while so close to a newly turned vampire. They had said as much to him as he walked in. Deciding to be apprehensive right now wasn’t what he wanted to do though. “We all need someone else to help us get through this confusing existence we call life. At least we get to share that and figure it out together,” he said as he leaned back on the bed. That was a newer concept he had adopted once the ball started rolling with her. In a way, he wished he had figured it out years earlier. On the flipside, things happened for a reason. This was just another one of those.

Grey smiled at her comment about it being a poor joke, and Cecelia relaxed a little at his acceptance of the joke. The mood was getting lighter by the moment, which Cecelia was grateful for. She knew there were going to be more visits before her stay at the hospital was over, and she could guarantee that not all of them were going to be as pleasant as this one was. Grey came closer to the bed, and Cecelia didn’t move. A part of her wanted to flinch away from him, to insist that her control wasn’t good enough and that she didn’t want to bite him. Another part of her wanted to reach out, though, take his hand like she had the last time she was in the hospital and remind herself that things in the world. The two impulses appeared to cancel each other out, though, and Cecelia just watched, staring as Grey sat down next to her, as if she wasn’t a newly turned vampire. It was one thing to say that she was still Cecelia but another thing entirely to have someone actually act as if that was the truth. After a moment, Cecelia reached out like she had wanted to all along, laying her hand across Grey’s. Her skin hadn’t looked pale to her before, but when her hand was on top of her boyfriend’s, Cecelia could see how the color looked even whiter than was typical for her. Color was being drained from her veins, but Cecelia didn’t care about that as much as the fact that it was unbelievably easy to ignore how Grey smelled, even when he was this close. She could do this.
“We’re lucky that we found someone as young as we are.” Cecelia pondered. Her sister was married, for Merlin’s sake, and they were only seventeen! That was a concept that was equal parts confusing and wonderful for Cecelia – how someone could be so sure, at their age, that they had found the person that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with. Cecelia supposed she was lucky not to learn of Braelynn’s survival and her marriage to Zander until after she already was beginning to understand what had led her sister to make those decisions. Otherwise Cecelia might have spent her days judging Bay for being foolish and loving too hard, too soon. Cecelia still wasn’t going to throw caution to the wind, of course, but she knew that she already trusted Grey, and like he had said, she was prepared to share her life with him. Cecelia turned to look at Grey. “Can I kiss you, or would that be weird?” There were, after all, fangs to deal with, and they were in a bed, and… Cecelia cut that line of thought off. She just needed an answer to her question.

@cecelia He was unsure of how she would react to him sitting down. It was one thing if he backed away, afraid of her. It was another if she physically moved herself from him. He knew there would probably be lots of uncertainties going forward. The last time he had interacted with a vampire had been, well, not very much. Most of it was from books or comments made by other students while at school. Despite their overall acceptance (or at least appearing like it was) of werewolves, any sort of vampire whether full or partial had been nonexistent. He had always supposed that it had something to do with their distaste for the use of magic and wands, instead relying on their own abilities. Cecelia was going to be an oddity in that sense; while a full vampire now, she was a witch first. That kind of identity crisis was bound to be stifling and all he could do was be there to help her figure it all out. Sitting down on her hospital bed was his way of showing that, amongst the many other things he was trying to convey via actions instead of words. Sometimes he wished he could say things more eloquently in the moment.
Instead of any of the things he thought could happen when sitting down on the bed, Cecelia placed her hand over his. That simple action meant more than he even realized initially. He wasn’t scared of what she was now, and she wasn’t scared of being near him. Maybe he was reading too much into it, but that was what made sense in his head. Her thought on finding someone at this age had him nodding his head. It was an interesting concept. None of this that they had was because of impulse – rather it was built upon over the course of months. Grey had never actually contemplated how he would end up in a relationship aside from the fact that it would eventually happen one day, and now was apparently that time. Obviously it wasn’t happening, but sometimes he didn’t think it would be all that farfetched if instead of being dosed with love potion again, someone was slipping him Felix Felicis.
Shifting his hand enough so that his fingers could intertwine with hers, Grey caught himself chuckling at her next comment. He knew he shouldn’t have because she was being serious about it but still couldn’t stop it from escaping him. “It’ll only be weird if you let it be,” he said, taking a deep breath to put the last few chuckles in their place. “And even then,” Grey continued as he rested his free hand on the side of her face. “I’ve been having a terribly difficult time turning down anything concerning you, Cecelia Rousseau. So if you think it’s going to be weird, then make it weird and count me in.”

Something about her question about kissing him had been funny to Grey, and Cecelia blinked at her boyfriend, trying to figure out what he was thinking to elicit that sort of reaction. She couldn’t figure it out, though, especially because his next words weren’t outright rejection, like might have been expected if someone laughed at the request for a kiss. Grey said that the kiss would only be weird if she let it be, and it was Cecelia’s turn to laugh. “You know, we’ve gotten through a lot of weird already without letting it change how we feel about each other.” She said. His sister had killed hers, after all, and that alone probably could have scared away lesser people, or allowed their relationship to deteriorate before it even started. Cecelia’s mind was quickly distracted from thoughts of their past by Grey’s hand cradling the side of her face. The present was demanding her attention, and Cece focused on breathing so that she wouldn’t accidentally suffocate herself because she was so close to Grey. Grey said that he was having a difficult time turning down anything that concerned her, and Cecelia closed her eyes to distract herself from the flutter in her chest at the words. Grey said that he was in, no matter if it was weird or not, and that was all the nudge Cecelia needed to close the miniscule gap between their lips and kiss him.
It wasn’t weird, and that was a relief. The list of things that hadn’t changed that much since her becoming a vampire was slowly growing longer, and Cecelia needed that reminder. Even if things seemed to be changing at a breakneck pace, there were still some things that were the same. “I’m really glad none of the nurses walked in.” She whispered to him. That would have been quite the scene… especially if they hadn’t realized that the teenagers were kissing and thought that Cecelia was biting Grey.

@cecelia He chuckled at her response about how much weird they had been through. The fact that neither of them had allowed any of that to stop what they were now was impressive, because there were surely darker things at hand that they really hadn’t discussed outright. She was a vampire now too, and so far that didn’t have him running in the opposite direction. If that, coupled with everything previously going on their lives hadn’t turned him away, then he was finding it hard to think of anything that could. Grey didn’t want to think of it like he had to be there for Cecelia because she didn’t have anyone else; he wanted to be there. He was going to be there. Hopefully him being in the hospital right now was a sign of his dedication going forward. Having never done this relationship thing before, things like this were hard to wrap his head around unless they were explicitly said. It seemed to be right though because his and Cecelia’s lips were touching as she kissed him. Any silly worries that he had about anything were gone in that instant. She was still her, vampire or not. He knew it already, but the kiss sealed the deal.
Grey snorted as she said she was glad none of the nurses had walked in. It had been hard enough to tell them off when he entered, he hadn’t even thought about the part where they could potentially be checking in every now and again. The same relief that she was still the same person despite being a vampire was also the reason that they would be making sure everything was fine. “There are plenty of worse things they could have walked in on. Things that would make me sound check empty classrooms at school,” he freely admitted. It had happened one too many times. Teenagers were teenagers after all. He was sure she had caught plenty during her tenure as a prefect. It was hard not to at Hogwarts. “So when do they let you out of here? This bed is pretty comfortable, so I can’t blame you if you push the release off by a few days,” Grey joked, patting the sheets a few times. Still, the place was freakishly sterile and nothing beat being home. Personally, he would be driven crazy being stuck in Mungo’s for longer than a few days.

Cecelia squeezed her eyes shut when Grey said that there were plenty of other things that the nurses could have walked in on. It was true that they had probably walked in on people kissing hundreds of times before – hospital rooms seemed to bring out a lot of emotion people – but it was still weird to think, especially since Cecelia and Grey hadn’t done much of the whole kissing thing. And thinking about them walking in on the other things that Grey referenced? Cecelia was mortified even thinking about it, even more so when thinking about those things happening in empty classrooms. Cecelia could think of more than one of her classmates who probably would participate in those sorts of behaviors, and probably wouldn’t be as embarrassed if someone were to catch them in the middle of it. Even when she had patrolled as a prefect she hadn’t caught anyone red-handed. There were plenty of disheveled looking people, but none that were completely unclothed or in flagrante.
Cecelia was rescued from her series of flush-inducing thoughts when Grey asked when they were letting her out of the hospital. “They haven’t told me a specific date.” She sighed. “I’m more in the hospital to learn control than to deal with any sort of injuries, so really, it’s just a matter of when they think I’m ready to be released in the general public.” Cecelia was sure that if her nurses could see how easy it was for her to resist biting Grey despite how close he was, they would consider bumping up her release time… but at the same time, like Grey said, she wouldn’t mind pushing back her release by a few days. Not because of the beds, but because of her own comfort. She knew that she would never bite Grey, or anyone that she knew, but she was worried that her resolve would crumble if she didn’t know the person as well and wasn’t as repulsed by the idea of biting them.

@cecelia Grey realized that he may have said a little too much when bringing up the fact that the nurses could have walked in on worse. Obviously it could always be worse, there was no denying that. His earlier snort turned into a chuckle as he watched Cecelia close her eyes, probably trying to remove those kinds of thoughts from her head. “Sorry,” Grey continued laughing, attempting to stop it in order to be more serious about it all. “But I’m not wrong, am I?” Taking a deep breath, he calmed the laughs down. There were a few things he would miss about Hogwarts, but stumbling upon a supposedly empty classroom at the wrong moment was not one of them. Even worse was walking past a storage closet and hearing…he didn’t want his imagination wandering off right now. Suffice to say, he didn’t have to deal with walking in on any of that anymore and that was perfectly fine with him. He wouldn’t be losing any sleep over it at all.
He listened as she explained why she was still in the hospital. That much he knew, the process to even get to where he was right now had been awful. Strong arming his way past healers and nurses probably hadn’t been the smartest thing he had done but he also liked to think that he knew Cecelia well enough that she wouldn’t fang out on him the second he walked into the room. It all went back to his first thoughts on trust when he had entered. But her concerns about everyone else made sense too – he was just one of the few exceptions. It was like they were puppy-proofing the entirety of London from the potential problems Cecelia might cause. That was a big ‘if’, mostly because he was sure she already had the self-control to not go gnawing on every neck within her reach. “Once you are discharged and everything is sorted out, I’ll pick up some take-out and bring it over. Always found that it helps with not cleaning dishes for a day or two. If that’s okay with you.”

Grey apologized for putting the images in her head, but they weren’t exactly the kind of images that were easy to erase. Cecelia pouted at him for a bit before realizing that she wasn’t much of a pouter and probably looked ridiculous. Besides, it was kind of funny, even if it was equally parts mortifying. Cecelia smiled tentatively at Grey, still hyper-aware of her fangs, when he said that he wasn’t wrong. “No, you’re not wrong.” She agreed, as much as she wished that the answer would have been otherwise. Grey’s laughter eventually faded, and Cecelia tried not to stare at him too much. It was nice to have someone who was so happy around in a time like this. It wasn’t like Grey was particularly peppy or happy-go-lucky, but he wasn’t constantly bemoaning the state of affairs – he took life as it was, both the good and the bad, and that was something that Cecelia admired greatly. Even in times like this, with her in the hospital, her life sure to change, it was okay to have a little bit of smiles and laughter.
Cecelia was pleased that Grey was already talking about her being discharged, mostly because it made it seem closer than it probably was in reality. She didn’t want to be cooped in the hospital forever, even if she had made peace with needing to be in it a little longer. Grey mentioned takeout, and Cecelia’s brow furrowed. “I don’t think I’ve ever had takeout before.” She said slowly, still racking her brain. Washing dishes wasn’t exactly a concern of hers, not with the way she had been brought up, so she had never needed to get food just to avoid washing. Even after further thought, Cece couldn’t think of a single instance where she had ever eaten takeout, not even as a treat. “It sounds like a fun experience, though.” She offered. “And, of course, I never mind getting to spend time with you.” That was getting into the dangerously-sappy territory, so Cecelia just shut her mouth and waited for a response.

@cecelia Cecelia admitted that he wasn’t wrong, and he tried not to give up his victorious grin to her pout. The addition of the fangs was funny, though it was more of an adorable funny than a laugh out loud one. This was part of who she was now, fangs and blood-sucking and all that fun stuff. As far as he could tell, those newly acquired attributes hadn’t changed her core yet, and he believed that she had enough resolve to never let that waver. All of the things he had heard about, when it came to her family and growing up, had already built something that vampirism would have great difficulty tearing down. These were his own observations, of course, but it was one of the reasons he had found her so interesting in the first place, and why he was where he was right now.
His eyes widened, and his jaw probably dropped too, as Cecelia said she had never eaten takeout before. That was blasphemy. He had to show her the way. Takeout was a special something – even he didn’t know how to describe it, aside from that it was stupidly expensive with the added delivery fee but always worth it in the end, no matter where he ordered from. “An experience is one way to put it,” he chuckled, trying to think back to the last time his entire family had been home and ordered. That was one of the times where criticisms weren’t being slung through the air at each other, and where they could converse like a normal family. A smile formed on his face as she said she didn’t mind spending time with him. “It’s a date then,” he confirmed. “I don’t think they’ll be too happy with me dragging outside food into here the next time I visit. It was hard enough talking my way through the nurse outside,” he motioned towards the door. Surprisingly, none of the nurses had checked in yet. It was reassuring that they trusted Cecelia as much as he did. Hopefully that meant it wouldn’t be long until she was out. They couldn’t keep her locked up in here forever.
