@katie Lance had no idea how today had come to be. He had been wandering around Diagon Alley yesterday, minding his own business and trying to find something to do while Georgie was gone on her vacation, when a girl he had never met before decided to get up in his face. The strangest part about it was that she was also an American, and like some of the other chance encounters he had as of late, Lance had found himself becoming something like an informant. He had figured that the influx of American kids his age was probably due to the end of the tournament and vacation lining up perfectly. It was strange to think that for once in his life, he could have used this opportunity to escape on his own trip of sorts – he could pretend to be a no-maj and go all over Europe, maybe even home for a while. Visiting Barbara and the family was never going to happen with his sister at his side, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t go see his old hometown.
Unfortunately none of that was happening because he had other important things going on, like the band, and apparently showing this girl he had met yesterday around London. Lance didn’t think he was particularly the best person for it, but she had seemed rather insistent that he do it. Seeing as he didn’t have plans for anything else today, reasoning with her logic wasn’t all that difficult. Currently he was camped out against a wall a few blocks away from a museum that they were supposed to be visiting soon. The girl, her name was Katherine, had said something about liking math and the only thing he knew that was no-maj and math related was the Science Museum in South Kensington. It was free admittance, which to him was graciously accepted, and he was sure Katherine wouldn’t have any objections to that.
Normally he probably would have had Georgie tag along as well, but that would have posed two problems: she more than likely wouldn’t have enjoyed Katherine’s personality and this outing never would have been planned in the first place if his sister had been with him while arranging it. He couldn’t blame her though, she tended to know what was best quite often, and Lance trusted her gut more than his own at times. But Georgie wasn’t here and he was bored out of his mind. Plus it was finally a way to meet an American student that could fill him in on all the things he had missed by going to Hogwarts instead.

Lancelot Linley. A fantastic little piece of Southern charm. When she met him, she was thrilled, and decided to adopt him as her personal guide in London, and for Hogwarts this fall. He had chosen their first place to go today, and she didn't waste any time in making herself look drop dead gorgeous. She liked dressing up, especially in just every day jeans and her hair down around her shoulders. She could dress up for a formal event, sure, but it was really impressive how she made an every day look seem high fashion, even with thrift-store clothes. She approached the spot where Lancelot told her to meet him and waved at the sight of him, offering one of her signature smiles. A smile that showed that she knew she looked good, and she would have this guy wrapped around her finger in no time. Thank god for other Americans. It was even more exciting that he hadn't gone to school with her, so he was like a new guy but not British. "Hey, there," she greeted as she approached. lancelot ray linley

@katie He spotted her before she was even remotely close to his location. It was kind of hard not to, the same as it had been yesterday when she first approached him. There were plenty of outgoing and forward characters he had met while at Hogwarts, but Katherine certainly took the grand prize for it. Lance could already tell between their brief encounter the day before and now this that she was the kind that liked to be seen. He hated to admit it, but he liked to be that way sometimes too, more so because that meant he could casually chat with people. The whole ‘let’s start a band’ thing with the guys didn’t help his case out much either, since that required a relatively decent amount of stage presence when it came down to it. At least he was pretty sure they would be playing live once they were ready. Learning how to play his instrument came first.
Back to Katherine though since she was getting closer now. There weren’t many times where he had been able to just hang out with people while at school, especially this last year, so getting to do it now definitely took a load of stress off of him. He was sure she would continue to ask him for help and questions throughout the summer too, so it would be a good distraction. And he really couldn’t find anything wrong with making friends with American students. They probably would have been friends if he had actually gone to the correct school. “Hi,” Lance responded, opting not to use ‘howdy’ for once in his life. He usually did it to the Brits because it got them all giddy about an American using a cowboy greeting. “Ready to head over?” he asked as he pulled off of the wall he had been leaning against. “Pretty sure it’s somewhere around here. Never been before.”

He said "hi," in greeting and she offered a short nod. He asked if she was reading, saying it was somewhere around there. "Yes," she said, stepping right up beside him and slowly linking her arm through his. He was a gentleman, after all, wasn't he? She liked that. She liked that he was a classic kind of guy, much better than Daniel, her ex boyfriend. She would be seeing him soon... that would be interesting. "So, you said we're going to a museum?" she asked, her voice laced a little with excitement. It was mostly flat and monotone, because she always talked like that. She was straightforward, blunt, and calculating. People had told her that she was more machine than human, and she didn't mind that. She solved problems fast and she didn't care for too much emotional crap. She was excited about this museum. She liked those. Even better that she had a fine piece of southern on her arm. She missed New York like crazy, and maybe a museum would make her feel better about that. New York had so many and she often found herself in them. lancelot ray linley

@katie Lance grinned as she said she was ready to head to the museum. This was going to be fun. He hadn’t had much of a chance to explore the city when the orphanage kind of locked them up most of the time. Locking up wasn’t the best description, since it was more like keeping a close watch on potential flight risks. Not every kid liked being there. He and Georgie were sort of the odd ones, since they still had each other. There were the occasional break outs conducted, his lip ring a result of that. Barbara didn’t appear too enthusiastic to see that when they finally met again. He didn’t really care though.
What he didn’t expect as they started their walk, was for Katherine to link her arm through his. This wasn’t anything new for him when it came to girls; Georgie, while his sister, did hang onto him quite a bit, and there were plenty of female friends he was comfortable being close like this with. All of those ones he had known for years, so it wasn’t that strange while walking between classes or going to Hogsmeade. The difference here was that he had only met this girl yesterday. He obviously didn’t pull away, because that wasn’t who he was, he just thought it was strange that she was so comfortable latching onto someone she didn’t even know. They were going to the museum, regardless of whether or not she was attached to his arm. That much wouldn’t change. “Yeah. It’s a science museum. I don’t know ‘bout your school, but the most science we get is from potions,” Lance explained, dropping his voice near the end of the sentence. “So basically nothing.”

Well, that was quite a smile. She had seen that grin when they met, but it still surprised her that someone could look that happy and genuine at the same time. She smiled, sure, but it wasn't really that kind of grin. He spoke about the museum and how they didn't get much science other than potions at Hogwarts. Katherine rolled her eyes, nodding. "I'll never understand why our schools are so adamant about stopping important parts of our education like that. They just expect us to take," her voice lowered too, "'no-maj studies' if we're interested. It doesn't make any sense," she rolled her eyes and straightened up a little more. "I, for one, am planning on going to University for maths and science," she said, even though he already knew she was interested in that stuff. "Are the Universities in England any good?" she asked. lancelot ray linley

@katie They seemed to be on the same page when it came to non-magical studies. Lance could understand that it used to be different at Hogwarts, and what he assumed was the same for the other magical schools, but these days it was difficult. No-maj society was advanced – they had technology that rivaled magic (in a way), and had their own impressive way of going about everything. He had always thought that it was a little silly that they had to completely reject their human side and dive straight into magical studies. Katherine hit the nail on the head when it came to the non-magical class. “Yeah we have that too. Muggle studies is what it’s called,” Lance shook his head a bit. “You’re better off learning about all that outside of school during the breaks. And to get a professor that actually knows what they’re talking about? Good luck.” That was one of the more negative comments to come out of his mouth in a while. But it was also one of the things he despised about Hogwarts. He was interested in music. They had an orchestra, but it focused on classical pieces. There wasn’t a music theory class or even a history class that taught students about their no-maj counterparts. The professors seemed to forget that not every student came from purely magical household.
“College? I never thought about that…” His goal was playing music. Seeing as he was going to be tagging along with the band pretty soon, that was going to be his life for the next however many years. “I don’t actually know. I’m more invested in music right now. And I don’t really have the money either.” Not necessarily true. Barbara had left them a decent amount of cash in Gringotts, and that had been known to convert over to the British pound fairly well. College had never been a thought, so it didn’t seem useful to him.

Katherine rolled her eyes a bit when he said that word, 'muggle'. That just sounded fake. No-Maj was straight forward -- NON MAGIC. It made sense. But no, the British had to use some word probably first spoken by a three year old. She remember that even though he was American he had spent most of his life here. And, of course, Hogwarts class would have that name. He said they were better off learning all that outside of school, during breaks, and she nodded when he added that they wouldn't even have a professor who knew what they were talking about. "Maybe that should be my mission," she mused, "to study science and math to the point that I am brilliant at it, more than I already am, and then guest teach at all the different schools," she wasn't a big fan of travel but... it wasn't the worst idea.
He said that he never thought about college and she raised an eyebrow. It was always strange to her that people didn't think that. Wizards weren't really encouraged to, though. They were encouraged to go into work right after school in apprenticeships and training programs. She liked that system, but not that there was nothing for her interests in the magic world.he said he was invested in music, and spoke about money. She nodded, "Oh, I can understand the money... but... there are good music schools. I've been told all you really need to be a musician is passion or something like that," passion, was not her thing. "Do you have that, Lance?"

@katie Lance listened to Katherine as she said that she could probably learn all about math and science, and then go to all of the magical schools and teach it. That was a pretty impressive mission, to be honest. Traveling seemed like it was great – he knew that eventually he could be traveling all over the world performing, assuming that the band worked out the way they had planned it to. For the time being though, travel had to be a minimal thing. Georgie was apparently stretching her wings, going to both the US and France this summer. He got lucky enough to babysit their apartment. “So teaching is a passion too, or…?” Lance trailed off, unsure of how to finish the sentence. Clearly she had some interest in helping others learn about math and science, or else she wouldn’t have said it. He just hadn’t taken her to be the kind to want to do that, especially to kids. After graduation, that was going to be it for him and school unless something else panned out with a no-maj college.
The money was a big deal. But so was music. Katherine brought up the concept of passion being all he needed, and Lance contemplated the theory. Did he? He had just started with the bass, but had always seemed to have an affinity for the art. There was certainly some kind of untapped potential there that was waiting to spill out of him at the proper point in time. Lately it was starting to look like the time was now. “Yeah, I’d say I do,” he responded confidently. “There weren’t many places for me to escape to growin' up, but the place I was at had a record player so I used that as a way to get through it all.” He knew it was a sad story, everyone reminded him and Georgie of that all the time, but he also didn’t want to be pitied for it, which was exactly why he hadn’t said that the place he was at was actually an orphanage. There was no doubt that she was going to ask him what he meant by all of that though. She was too smart to let it go unanswered.

He asked if teaching was a passion too and she shook her head, "not necessarily, but fixing issues that are completely ridiculously managed is. Systems are in place for a reason, yes, but those systems need to be broken if things aren't going well. That's what science is all about," she explained. "And the magical education system is seriously lacking in no-maj fundamentals. We live in the same world, we shouldn't be making ourselves weaker than the muggles by not understanding or trying to learn things like rocket science or studying nuclear energy. Believe me, the no-maj's have one over on us, Lance," she explained, her tone sure, quick and not wasting any breath. He said he did have the passion, after thinking to himself for a moment, but there was confidence there. She admired confidence, and it was much more attractive than the lack thereof. He spoke of a record player being his only means of escape and she nodded, "and on this record player, what did you listen to?" she asked, deciding that was more important than where he had lived, for the moment. lancelot ray linley

@katie Katherine corrected him on the teaching part – he had misconstrued what she had meant. Teaching was certainly an integral part to what they were discussing, especially if it concerned fixing old, broken systems that had little to no reason to still exist in society. Having the chance to watch some television while at the orphanage, and back when he was still in the States, the advancement of technology and society through science had been intriguing, to say the least. Even no-majs seemed to stall out at times though, but at least they had intelligent minds working to push forward no matter what. Lance nodded his head as she continued on about living in the same world as the no-majs, and that she thought they probably had the higher ground now. That was a hot take on it all; he disagreed slightly about having the edge, but then again they were the ones hiding their society. No-majs weren’t doing that. “But wouldn’t that still put us slightly ahead? They haven’t discovered a way to create magic out of the blue, and sure, some of the tech that has come out over the past decade is interesting, but they haven’t reached our levels yet.” He paused to take a breath. “I don’t think you’re wrong though, about how we seem to push away a world we can definitely learn from and use to benefit even more. I think the real problem is that the governments don’t know how to universally integrate the two without breaking the statute, which is probably a non-negotiable thing to do.” Lance really wanted to add that he thought music was one of the ways to join the two worlds together, but that sounded cheesy and really didn’t fit the discussion they were having. He had to be serious right now. Make a good impression on her.
As for his record player and what he listened to, that was more in his area. Lance grinned as she asked the question. “Blues mostly. A little bit of classical here and there. The director liked the roots to all music. Classical and orchestral laid out the basics and rules – blues smashed it apart, took the original pieces, and created something new and modern.” Whether or not that made sense to her didn’t really matter, that was how he viewed the genres. Music was subjective down to the very last note. People were never going to whole-heartedly agree on a song, or artist, or genre as the greatest of all time. It was impossible. But that was also what allowed for an infinite amount of greatness to be born out of music.

Katherine listened as Lance spoke then, saying that magical beings would still be slightly ahead since muggles haven't found a way to create magic out of the blue. He talked about the tech, but that they hadn't reach wizard level yet. Then he said she wasn't wrong, and how they did indeed push away a world they could learn an benefit from, saying that governments didn't know how to universally integrate without breaking the statute. She scoffed, "don't even get me started on the statute of secrecy," she cut in firmly. Then she sighed a little, "it's quite a shame that people are such cowards, I think... on the one hand I get it, on the other I think it needs to be weighed more, and in the long run we'd see that we should all live and learn together," that was probably the most... 'hippie like' thing that Katherine Kowalski would ever, ever say. As for the music, he said he listened the Blues and Classical music. He said the Director likes all kinds... "Director of what?" she asked, not being able to hold back her curiosity. That was just too specific of a word for her to just ignore, like she had with his vague description of where he lived. lancelot ray linley

@katie Katherine had a fiery passion for their discussion, it seemed. He understood where she was coming from though; it was easy from their point of view to see exactly where and how no-majs could be introduced to the concept of magic. The older generations, the ones that had been around for decades (and sometimes centuries) longer and seen incomprehensible things within their own community, would vehemently disagree with anything they were chatting about right now. He got it. But as a somewhat orphaned kid in a country he wasn’t born in, Lance also didn’t understand some of the ideals that the adults held. Was it all for a greater good, or selfish of them to prevent advancement as a society? “I think I’ll stick to music,” he said after thinking about everything for a few seconds, eyebrows furrowed. “At least then I can do my due diligence. Creating and sharing music works better than politics I find.”
He wasn’t sure if he could call it a slip up, or if it was his brain subconsciously telling him that he needed to blabber about how he had grown up in an orphanage. It would have come up eventually, since that was the extent of his life. Everything before then didn’t really matter. “Director of the orphanage my sister and I grew up in,” Lance stated, staring straight ahead as they walked. “Kinda messed up that we got sent all the way over here for school. Apparently it was too difficult to put us through the system in the US. I don’t know.” Lance let out a sigh before returning to his usual happy demeanor. Talking about all of that was never easier, but also was a constant reminder that he and Georgie had made it pretty far on their own. “But now I have my own apartment for after graduation, so I’m all moved out of that place. Sorry for dumping all that on you. Just strange that I finally have my own place, I guess.” And so far, it had only been him. Georgie was off doing her traveling, and really wouldn’t settle in officially until the following summer. That gave him all the time in the world to get it set up.

He said he would just stick to music and she smirked, looking over at him with a slightly raised eyebrow. He was getting a little touchy-feely-hippie, but that was okay. She wasn't like that, but that was kind of part of his charm. "You do that. I'll do the hard part," she offered. He then explained that he grew up in an orphanage and she listened, not interrupting as he looked straight ahead. She followed suit, taking her eyes off of him so he wouldn't feel like she was staring at him. She nodded when he said it was messed up that they were sent here, and held back a scoff about it being easier than the US system. He sighed and her brows furrowed slightly, but she released them again when he spoke of his own apartment for after graduation. His apology seemed unnecessary, but she nodded anyway. "It's a new thing. Those are often at the forefront of our minds, easier to access in conversation even if you don't necessarily want to," she explained. @katie Lance kept his mouth shut when Katherine said she would do the ‘hard part’, whatever that was supposed to mean. From what he had seen of Zander’s and Brandon’s experiences in the music industry, it was far from easy to be found and promoted. Technically it wouldn’t be as difficult for him since he was joining a band that already had at least one known musician and another that was on his way up to the top. He was just along for the ride and learning as he went. But that didn’t make it all any less difficult than a job in politics, or science, or owning a store. Up until a few months ago, the only things he had to his name were a few items from home and a sister. Anything going forward was going to seem impossible to him, thankfully he had friends to help him this time around. There was no point in arguing with her though – he could tell she was the type that was set in her ways, and trying to explain his side of things would lead to a heated debate regardless of who came out victorious. Comparing their experiences in a career sense was impossible to begin with since they were so far apart in what they wanted to do. All of this was new. Lance knew he had to be easier on himself about it too, but it was so difficult when there were so many things he had to do. Things he needed to do, rather, or living peacefully moving forward would be hard. “You grow up fast,” he answered, after she asked about how living in the orphanage was. “But it wasn’t bad either. They promised to never separate me and Georgie, and they followed through with that. So that makes them okay in my books.” That would have been a fight from both Linley children, assuming it would have happened. There was no way they could have reasonably split them up, especially after forcing them into a country and school they knew nothing about. Kicking them when they were already down would not have served a purpose in his opinion. “Doesn’t mean I listened to them all the time though,” he grinned, making sure to tap the lip ring, which was almost a year old. That had been a hell of a way to stick it to the orphanage. “Anyways, the museum is across the street,” Lance pointed out with his free hand. “Hopefully it’s not too boring,” he grinned before leading her towards it. [The End]
