Daniel was at the Leaky for dinner today after a crazy practice with the team. The rest of them went out together, which they did way too much for his liking, and he decided to go on his own to the Leaky instead of joining them wherever they were going. He'd been out with them once before and they were... fun, but a little too much fun to go out with every day. He was looking forward to a relaxing evening with his own thoughts.
Yeah, right.
He was only one bite into his meal when he gasped so loudly he was sure everyone turned to look at him. Someone who had just walked into the room was freaking. Out. He searched for them with his eyes and they zeroed in on the girl. He stood and crossed over to her, "hey," he said quickly, wanting to get this under control for both their sakes, "are you alright?"

Kinsey. Was. Furious. She knew that things were rough between her and Diana, but they just hit an all time low a few moments before when the sisters had their biggest argument yet. Why was Diana being such a jerk? It shouldn't have been so surprising to Kinsey and she really shouldn't let it upset her this much, but she didn't seem to be able to help herself. Riley was gone on his vacation with his family, so she couldn't go to him either, though she would definitely be writing to him about it.
Trying to get away from Diana and the rest of her family, Kinsey apparated to the Leaky Cauldron. She knew it was around dinner time, so it would probably be busy and she didn't know if she'd stay long, but it was somewhere she could start. She walked into the room, fighting to keep her anger to herself. A stranger walked over to her, greeting her and asking if she was alright. He had positive intentions, so she just nodded at him, "Yeah, peachy." Huh, she wasn't doing a good job of hiding her emotions. She was obviously angry. She sighed, trying to calm herself down. "Sorry, I guess I'm not." He probably knew that though. "You don't have to bother yourself with it though." She'd be fine. Once she got over this.

She was a bit snappy, and then apologized -- her remorse loud but her fury louder. He shook his head, "don't worry, I concern myself with this stuff all the time. Can I get you a butterbeer? It will make you feel better, I swear," his German accent hung heavy on his lips. He tried to control it when in England to be easy to understand but it was hard to focus on when he was trying to resist her strong emotions. Despite his fears, he gestured to the table he was sitting at. "You need someone to talk to. I can tell -- I have a way of knowing these things," he took in a deep breath, his brow furrowing, "I'm Daniel, and I'm an empath," that was the fastest he had ever gone from meeting someone to telling them his ability.

Kinsey was still mad. Furious, actually, but she really didn't want to take it out on this guy, who was being so nice to her. Her body was tense as she tried to restrain her anger and find a semi-polite reason to leave him. He told her, through a thick accent, that he got involved in stuff like this all the time and she frowned a little. Stuff like what? Stuff like people who were upset? That was strange. She could tell he wasn't lying though. It wasn't even an innocent white lie. Which was strange, but also kind of fascinating. He offered to get her a butterbeer and Kinsey hesitated. She didn't want to be an imposition and really couldn't talk about why she was so upset with a stranger, but at the same time she was so curious. Why did he want to talk to her?
He gestured at a table and Kinsey looked over at it as she tried to decide what to do. He said that she needed to talk to someone, that he could tell and Kinsey turned her attention back to the boy. What was he noticing about her? Then he introduced himself and said he was an empath and Kinsey's eyes widened in surprise. He was an empath? She knew about that ability! When she developed her gift, she started researching all about special abilities as she tried to figure out what she was. Initially, she'd thought she was an empath, but it didn't take long for her to realize she wasn't sensing feelings. Her gift was intentions, which was actually something she hadn't found in her research, she had to figure it out on her own. The thing was, his intentions were completely honest right now, which was baffling. There was no way he couldn't sense how angry she was, but he still wanted to talk to her. Why?
Kinsey bit her lip as she took a small step away from him. Under any other circumstances, she'd actually jump at the chance to talk to someone like him, someone who had an ability so similar to her own, but now she started to feel guilty. Her curiosity at his announcement was enough to distract her from her anger, but it was still boiling, down underneath all the lighter feelings and Kinsey didn't want to be a burden or overwhelm him or anything. She knew what that felt like to be overwhelmed with her gift, and it was hard enough, even without knowing the specifics of all the people around her. She only sensed generalizations, unless she had physical contact. It seemed to her that being able to tell the actual feelings would be more difficult, though she didn't say any of her thoughts out loud.
She shook her head slowly as she took another step back. "You don't want to be around me then," she answered finally, in reference to him being an empath. "I'm sure you can already tell, but I'm about to lose it emotionally and I really don't want to cause you any trouble, especially since you want to help me so much. You seem so nice." Of course, Kinsey couldn't really tell if that was how he always was, since she only met him a few minutes ago, but he wanted to help her, so that seemed like reasonable proof that he was a good, nice person. She didn't realize that she just gave away that she knew what an empath was, it seemed like that should be common knowledge to her. She also didn't realize she might've given something away about her own secret, if he was paying enough attention. "I'm Kinsey though. Sorry to have bothered you," she turned away from the boy, her thoughts flashing to Diana and she instantly felt the anger start to rise again. She shoved it down, knowing that he could sense it and not wanting to cause him any problems. She needed to get out of here.

Her fury was impressive, to say the least. She was confused, weirded out, interested... fascinated. Her emotions were layered over and over with a lot of different things as she was trying to decide what to make of him. It made sense. There was the surprise when he said his ability, and she seemed almost hopeful at the same time.
Theeeen came the intense concern and taking a step away from him. She felt bad, guilty even. He understood that but also didn't want her to feel that way. He had chosen to talk to her, so he had chosen to accept her emotions, right? She shook her head, saying that he didn't want to be around her -- which didn't seem like her decision to Daniel but whatever there. She said she didn't want to cause him any trouble, that he seemed nice, and he almost laughed at that before realizing that he actually was being nice. Weird. Then, before turning away, she gave her name and said she was 'sorry to have bothered him'. A strong part of him wanted to laugh out loud at such a silly comment, but her anger was enough to weigh him down.
"Well, that's up to you. I really am okay, though. I've been doing this a long time," he was talking to the back of her head now, great, "got some experience in this... anger stuff. Bet I've been angrier then you are right now before," maybe that could catch her attention? Make her at least talk for a few minutes?

She wasn't facing him anymore, though Kinsey could still sense his general intentions just fine. The truth was, while she felt guilty about the feelings emanating from her at the moment, she didn't really want to leave. She wanted ... to talk to him. To Dan. She hadn't ever met anyone with an ability even remotely similar to her own and wanted to talk about it, but could she do this to him? Besides that, she was still fighting down her anger at her sister and was certain he could sense it.
Still, he called after her, saying that it was up to her, but that he was okay. Kinsey paused, turning slowly to face him, biting her lip nervously. "Are you sure?" she asked, though his intentions seemed entirely positive, which meant he wasn't lying or trying to manipulate her in any way. He was just so ... interesting. Why would he want to talk to her, even when he could feel everything she was feeling? He said he had experience and her mouth twitched for a moment, almost wanting to smile, but not doing it. "So are you saying you can help me calm down or just distract me? Or neither?" Kinsey wasn't really sure what he was offering, but decided to give him a chance. It wasn't like he could make her angrier than Diana already did.

She turned and he let out a sigh of relief, his brows furrowing together in an expression of slight urgency. He nodded as she asked if he was sure, and smiled a little when she almost did. He could tell, through her emotions, that she found his comment amusing. At her question, he grinned, "Both, I think. Or, you can let all of your anger out and I'll just absorb it and we can scream at each other for a while. That'd be fun," he chuckled, but shook his head. "Nah, let's talk. And I'll buy you food," he suggested, beckoning her back to where he was sitting. He would entertain her for as long as it took to get her emotions down. No one that small deserved to feel that much anger. Well, no one did, but it was especially sad in this girl.

He was smiling and teasing her now and Kinsey was a little bit surprised by how easy he made it seem. When he answered her, her own smile widened. She wasn't sure if he was saying these things to try and calm her down or not, but it was working. At least, it was on the surface. Her anger underneath, that was untouchable, but she could try to not think about it for a bit. She shook her head slightly, "I think I've had enough screaming for one day," she answered, a little surprised by her honesty. "But I'll take you up on talking ... and on the food." She followed him to a small booth and sat down across from him. She couldn't help but look at him curiously. She had so many questions that she wanted to ask, but at the same time she didn't want to bother him. "Do you mind if I ask you some questions?" If he didn't want her to, she'd let him lead the conversation, but she sincerely hoped he'd be able to help her somehow.

She calmed down and he was glad it was working. He wasn't normally great and making people feel better, so it was nice that he could with her. She said that she'd had enough screaming and he nodded, leading her toward the booth as she agreed to having some food and company. Once they sat down, she asked if she could question him and he nodded. "Consider me your open book," offered, holding his arms out to either side to signify this. He normally wasn't a great open book either, but he would see what he could do. She was in need, anyway, and clearly going through a lot. Don't get him wrong, he wasn't about to become a regular therapist or anything. He was just helping out this girl. One time thing. Maybe.

Kinsey was a little surprised when he told her that he was an open book. At least she'd be able to tell if he was being honest or not during the conversation, though quite honestly she was just glad that there was some one she could talk to about it. She wasn't entirely sure if she wanted to tell him about her gift though. "I've researched a little about empaths," wow that sounded weird. "I'm a Ravenclaw," she added, hoping it sounded like a reasonable explanation for why she'd study weird things. "and I was wondering how you handle being around other people." She glanced around the place with meaning. Obviously he could handle people, since he was out in public. "I mean, with all the emotions and such ... how do you keep yourself from getting overwhelmed? I mean ... I doubt I'm easy to be around right now, but you're not running away?" It was meant to be a statement, but came out as a question. Kinsey was still angry, but her curiosity about how he coped with his ability and her hope for how she might possibly be able to apply his strategies for herself was a bit distracting. In a good way. Hopefully he could help.

She said she had researched empaths and he nodded, leaning forward a little. She added that she was from that smart-pants house, which was the same house Irina had told Dan he would have fit into. She asked how he handled being around other people, explaining that she wanted to know how to kept from being overwhelmed by the emotions and that he wasn't running away from her. He took in a breath before answering. "Well, yeah, you are kind of difficult to be near, but I've had a lot of practice. My abilities didn't come into full force until I was fifteen, but they've always been there dormant. It took me almost three years to finally realize I needed to get a handle on it, instead of just hiding and being rude all the time," he admitted. "I used to not handle it well at all. I'd try so hard not to care, I eventually had barely friends at all. I kept to myself at school, aside from playing Quidditch. That was one thing that helped my focus. Just zero in on the game. You gotta have an outlet like that. Do you?"

Kinsey nodded, not surprised at all when he said that it was difficult to be around her at all. That wasn't surprising, since her anger was still boiling under the surface. Anger at her sister Diana, and an almost overwhelming sense of loss any time she thought about her brother. "Sorry," she muttered softly. He did say he could handle it, but that didn't make it easy. He was probably going to hate her once he'd been around her for a while and soaked up all her bitter emotions.
She nodded as he expressed how long it took him to realize he needed to figure out how to handle his ability. At least that's what she wanted to learn to do, right? She worried her lip as he spoke, trying to decide how she could apply what he said. She jumped a little when he asked if she had an outlet. Why would he ask that? Did he somehow know? She shrugged her shoulders a little, "I read books," she said softly. She liked Quidditch, but she wouldn't play that at school. It would put her too close to Dom, give him too many opportunities to torment her. No, she wouldn't do that.
All of a sudden, she felt a strong urge to tell him the truth about her. It was weird. She didn't talk about herself or her ability to others. The only person she told that wasn't her family was her boyfriend. She swallowed, making an entirely random decision, but it just sounded right to her. "I have an ability too," she said, her voice the softest of whispers. Kinsey took a deep breath. She started this, she might as well finish it. "I can sense people's intentions." She looked up to him, eyes pleading. "I don't do well in groups of people, and I run away when it gets too much for me. I want to learn how to control it better, but I don't know how. Do you ... could you help me?" Kinsey didn't know if he'd want to leave after hearing her confession, but she'd just have to see now. Maybe he'd be able to help her more, knowing her situation.

She apologized for being difficult to be near, but he didn't comment on it. She seemrd like the type who apologized too often, even if there was no reason to, and even though that drove him a little crazy he didn't think it was worth chastising her for. Then, when she asked if she had an outlet, which he felt everybody needed no matter what their life was like, he felt a strange spike in her emotions. Like she was curious, or scared, or nervous. She said she liked to read books, but she spoke so quietly that he had to lean forward a little.
Before he could say anything in response she took in a deep breath and he paused, sensing that she had something important to tell him. The way her emotions were swirling inside her, as if trying to prep her for a big moment. Then the words came, she had an ability too. She could sense people's... Intentions? That was crazy. How did that even work? That was kind of like feeling emotions but rather what they intended to do with them? He was fascinated by it but at the same time could see how it was even more horrible than his ability. To know when someone was going to hurt you. I mean if you were prepared, maybe it wasn't so bad, but if you weren't, and it seemed Kenzie was a little bit... Unprepared, that would just be terrifying.
She asked if he could help her, and he took a moment to process what she had said. Was he able to help someone else with their problems? Maybe in a small way, yes, but he wasn't sure he was the best person for the job. He wasn't sure if he was even that good at controlling his own. He hesitated, leaning back a little before speaking. "I would like to be... As much as I can. But you should also speak with someone who is trained in these things. Someone who can really teach you to change how you are inside so that you can be happy. I mean I'm still trying, not perfect."

Dan said that he'd like to help her, but that she should look for someone else who could help her. Kinsey's curiosity heightened, along with a hope that he would know something or someone that could help her. She just didn't want to feel controlled by her ability anymore. She wanted to take control of it, and herself. "Do you know of anyone that could help? I've never heard of someone that can do what I do ..." Kinsey paused, realizing that if he did know someone he probably would have suggested their name right out. She bit her lip, trying to think of something she could ask him that maybe he could do or tell her. "Well ... what sorts of things do you do to help yourself cope with feeling everyone's emotions? And how do you react to particularly strong ones?" She hoped her questions made sense and waited, surprised at how much talking to him had calmed her from her initial fury. She was still upset, but she was distracted now and that was nice.

Curiosity, hope and maybe even a little confidence appeared in her, swirling in and out at the forefront of her feelings. Those were all good things, Dan thought, so at least he wasn't traumatizing her. At least not that he could tell. Trauma was pretty easy to read, though. Maybe one of the easiest emotions to read.
She asked if he knew someone and he nodded. "Back in Germany. You'll have to do a little research to find someone here. But even your school counselor should be able to help to an extent, it's better than nothing," he suggested with a shrug. "I'm not saying anyone our there has the exact same abilities you do, but everyone has something and some people are trained to help," the world of therapy seemed more popular on the muggle side, he thought, but it still existed in the magical world. Just like with ang therapist you had to find what's right for you.
She asked how he coped with strong emotions and feeling everyone's around him. "Well, as far as feeling so many at once... It's all about finding my OWN in the chaos and solely focusing on those first and foremost. Or picking one positive emotion in the crowd to zero in on, but that can be exhausting," he admitted. Then he frowned, "I'm still not great at dealing with the strong ones. Better to walk away."
