Ev could not decide how she felt about anything. Ever since she got that stupid owl about a matchmaking service offering blind dates, things hadn't been the same. Of course, she still went to practice the same as always and still found herself wandering the streets of London whenever she wasn't reading a book. (yes, she was fully aware of how lame that was, but at the same time couldn't help herself) However, ever since she started owling the owner of the matchmaking service, Ev couldn't help but wonder if he was right about romance. She was still struggling with everything that happened between her and Rocco, as well as the effect that had on the rest of her life and wanted to blame love for it. At the same time, however, she knew that wasn't right. At least, after talking to Mr. Jimbo Blishwick VI, she felt like she couldn't give up entirely. She felt more conflicted than she'd ever felt in her life, which was so strange for Ev. She liked focusing on facts, on things that could be found in books. Being so wrapped up in her thoughts and feelings and emotions was weird and she wasn't sure if she liked it. What she was sure of was the fact that she couldn't live like this. Whether or not she was ready for a relationship, she needed to settle her feelings on relationships in general or she wasn't going to be able to get sleep or rest at all. So she found herself making her way to the address she'd copied off of the blind date sign up he sent her. Ev felt even more nervous that she was coming here. She was nervous that people would see and judge her, but that was the least of her worries. Mostly, she was worried that talking with this guy wasn't going to change anything. She was worried that she would leave this building just as confused as she entered it and if that happened she really didn't know what she was going to do. Yadiel- her team captain- told her that everyone adjusted in different ways and that she needed to find a way that suited her, but Ev was having a hard time with that. Maybe talking to this guy would help. She hoped it would. Reaching the outside of the building, Evelyn looked up at the sign. She knew she was in the right place, now she just needed to enter. Taking a deep breath, she tried to prepare herself as she opened the door and stepped in. She looked around herself for a moment curiously. "Hello?" she said, hoping he was actually here. He did say he was available in the mornings ... jimbo brian blishwick vi

@evelyn What a lovely morning it was! Jimbo had arrived to the shop early. And by early, like crack of dawn early. He had cleaning to do, and while he typically would have delegated that to Adonia when she got in, he was feeling exceptionally energetic today and decided to do it on his own. It wasn’t like the place was ever a mess to begin with; reorganizing all of the paper materials he passed out to customers, sweeping the floors, and other basic cleaning things were done on a daily basis anyways. Today was the weekly shine though. That meant the windows were being completely washed, the floors mopped and made to sparkle, and the cushions on the chairs in the sitting area re-puffed. The re-puffing of the cushions was absolutely the most important part of it all. If the clients were uncomfortable, then it ruined his shot at getting their feelings accurately. He knew that was extremely nitpicky on his part since he would still be able to work with what they gave him, but there also wasn’t anything wrong with being a perfectionist in this business. The happier the client, the more likely that they spread the word. While he enjoyed people finding love on their own, going through him would lead to a higher success rate.
Working the entire morning and right up until it was time to open the shop, Jimbo was satisfied with how everything had turned out. Putting the last of the cleaning supplies away, and his wand safely back into his pocket, he unlocked the front door and stepped away from the counter to get a glass of water. Of course the door had to open and someone enter at that exact moment. He should have known better. Hearing the voice ask ‘hello’, Jimbo quickly knocked back the entirety of his glass with ease, straightened his shoulders, made sure there weren’t any creases in his suit, and stepped back out onto the floor while adjusting his tie slightly. Looking spiffy and professional was the name of his game. It had yet to fail him. “Good morning!” he said exuberantly. “How can I help you today?”

As she stood there, waiting for someone to show themselves in the shop, Ev considered leaving. This was stupid, wasn't it? The whole date thing in and of itself was dumb. Why did she let some stranger convince her to do this? Maybe she should just leave before ... crap. Someone stepped out in a suit, looking like he was ready to go to some formal event. Was this the owner? The guy she wrote a short while ago. He greeted her and asked how he could help. "Mr. Blishwick?" she asked hesitantly, then swallowed. "Uh, my name is Evelyn Estrada and I came to talk to the owner ...?" Evelyn trailed off, shrugging a little bit and hoping that he either knew the guy or was him, or that he was there. Why was she here? jimbo brian blishwick vi

@evelyn The young woman that he greeted at the front of the shop had the same look on her face that almost everyone had the first time they walked through the door. Jimbo didn’t need to hear her talk to understand the hesitance, though when she asked if he was indeed Blishwick, he could tell she was hesitant. Years of being in the business had allowed him to pick up on that within seconds of a customer walking in. He would have called it a sixth sense if he hadn’t already had one of those. Maybe a seventh sense then? Regardless, he had seen the look she had at least a million times, if not more, and knew exactly how to approach this kind of customer. The uneasy ones were always the hardest to convince initially, but once he had them calmed down they were the best sells. Jimbo liked to think that he played the angel on their shoulder, whilst their brains were the devil on the other. There was no way he could ever be the devil. Except in his daughter’s head…
The woman went on to give her name, Evelyn Estrada, and said she wanted to talk to the owner. “It just so happens, that I am both of those,” Jimbo said rather confidently, straightening his back and squaring his shoulders. He was proud of his name and title, as everyone should be of their job. It bred happiness like none other. But back to work – her name popped out because she was the one that he had been owling back and forth for about a week straight! The one that had wanted her name removed from his mailing list. “Miss Estrada, yes. I believe we had a correspondence going about the blind date submission, correct? And I said something about you coming in if you had any more questions regarding it.” Jimbo was positive he had, because he didn’t forget things that his customers said, mostly because he couldn’t. His pesky ability made it nigh impossible to forget anything love related, and the second he had received her blind date submission, she was stored in his head just like everyone else was. “So I wouldn’t be wrong if I asked you if you still had questions about it, would I?”

Evelyn nodded, not surprised when the man said he was the person she was looking for. He looked different than she imagined, but at the same time she wasn't surprised. He looked professional, like this really mattered to him. She didn't understand how that was, or why anyone would want to dedicate themselves to helping other people in their love lives, but she wasn't going to say anything about it. She nodded when he echoed her name, mentioning their owls. "Yes, that's right," she confirmed. Then he said he told her to come in if she had questions and she shrugged. "You also told me to come if I was nervous about the blind date," her voice was a little softer now. Ev didn't really like to admit weakness, but the truth was that she was so nervous about this date. A part of her still believed that she had a talent for chasing people away and she was scared to confirm that. He asked if she had questions and Evelyn shrugged again. "Probably, but I don't know what they are yet." Man, she sounded like an idiot. Her stomach was rolling and all she wanted to do was walk out of the shop right now and go hide in her bed for the rest of the day, skipping the date, but she somehow forced her feet to stay where they were. She hoped he couldn't see how anxious she was about this. He probably thought she was an idiot. jimbo brian blishwick vi

@evelyn Jimbo knew he was right. It was presumptuous of him to state that out loud though, and coming across as arrogant while trying to offer his services to the best of his ability had never exactly worked out in his favor. The ones that did get that sort of treatment deserved it though; Evelyn didn’t. He could tell in their letters that she would eventually come in, mostly because she had wavered on her decision once already. Cases like this were typical, and from the history she had given him in one of the letters, he completely understood why. Trust had been shattered and now she was unsure if she could it again. He saw hundreds of cases like this a year. For the ones that wanted help, he could. Those that didn’t were capable of walking out the door whenever they felt like it. “I did, didn’t I?” he replied, nodding his head a few times. Nervous and uneasiness were also common traits prior to a blind date. So far everything seemed to be going normal on her end, expect that she was taking him up on his extended offer.
Evelyn stated that she probably did have questions, but didn’t know what they were. All of these he could answer, hopefully. Depended on if she wanted to hear what he had to say. “Why don’t we sit down and figure it out then?” Jimbo motioned towards the sitting area, making his way towards his normal chair in the same move. Settling in, Jimbo extracted his wand from his pocket and swiftly flicked it at the open sign on the door, changing it to ‘closed’. He had a feeling that this could be a lengthy conversation if the correct line of questioning was followed. They didn’t need anyone disturbing that and spooking Ms. Estrada from wanting to continue with her blind date. She seemed anxious enough already as it was. “So what exactly are you nervous about? The date location, not knowing who the person is, or something else altogether?” Jimbo started. This would be a sure way of figuring out exactly what was unnerving her.

Ev just nodded when he mentioned that he did tell her she could come here if she needed to. It was true, but she didn't know what else to say. Why was she so nervous about this date? It wasn't like Ev hadn't ever been on dates before, she just ... she felt uncomfortable with people, always like she was going to mess something up. Even going on a date with someone she probably never met yet ... she was nervous that she would ruin it somehow. She nodded when he asked if they should sit down and talk. "Okay, I can do that," Ev said, moving toward a chair and sitting down. She looked at the man in front of her, wondering if there was some way he'd be able to help her. Then he started asking the questions. She knew they were coming, and he asked the exact questions that she thought he would. She bit her lip, trying to get herself ready for this conversation. "I guess ... no, it's not really any of that. It's more that ... I'm not really good with people. I'm always worried that I'm going to scare or chase them away and I'm nervous that it's impossible for me to connect with someone, or for them to feel like they've connected with me." She paused, "Sorry, I don't know how to explain it right ..."

@evelyn Jimbo beamed at the young woman as she agreed to take a seat so they could discuss her qualms about what he assumed could be everything to do with his job and what she was hypothetically expected to attend for the blind date. That was what he was here for though; it was the Blishwick family’s objective as matchmakers to aid and assist those concerned about traversing the ethereal current of love. Love wasn’t easy, and anyone that said otherwise was either uninformed or a buffoon. Trying to place a complex network of thoughts, emotions, and actions to a scale of difficulty was discourteous to anyone that managed to overcome all odds to find and maintain ‘the one’ in their life. From what Jimbo could tell, this was where Evelyn Estrada seemed to be getting hung up. Their brief exchange via owl and from their words shared just now, he could see a classic example of a young person that lacked a specific sort of self-confidence in themselves. That wasn’t to say the girl was ignorant of her problems. No, she seemed very much self-aware of her issue, and that was the root of the problem. Conflicting thoughts on what was good or bad for her life, most likely on top of her career and other social interactions. Jimbo didn’t even need her to explain it to him, because he could see all of this already.
But he let her talk anyways, because that was his job. Over the years he had discovered that the most important tool to utilize with an apprehensive client was to allow them to talk about their problems. He was allowed to initiate the dialogue – that was why he had rifled off a round of questions the second he sat down in his seat – but he was not allowed to respond until she asked for it. Some clients would figure it out as they talked, sometimes they needed a second person’s reassurance, in this case, his. That would instill the self-confidence that they needed, with as little work on his part as possible. Because who wanted to be granted their every whim? In love, managing to figure it all out on your own, with as little interference from third parties as possible, was a significantly more euphoric feeling than being handed it on a silver platter.
Evelyn finished with an apology about how she had explained it, and Jimbo shook his head that it was fine, chuckling softly at it all. “Those are valid concerns to have. Certainly nothing wrong to be thinking about how you connect with others. I’d say that’s rather admirable, wanting to make sure you leave a good impression on those you’ve met. Spoken like a true professional athlete,” Jimbo responded, mulling over what else he could say to prompt a deeper discussion on what she had told him. There was a lot to unpack, or deconstruct rather, but all of his answers were simple ones, the ones that could easily be waved off except by those that really wanted to get to the bottom of their own fears. Evelyn was exhibiting the behavior of someone who desired to figure it all out. “Be yourself,” he said rather abruptly, breaking the silence he had been holding. “If that connection you’re talking about is made, then it’s made, right? If not, it wasn’t meant to be. Have you ever watched the muggles in America play baseball? The average player will strike out more than hit a homerun. Stepping up to hit a homerun every single time is a recipe for disaster, I’d wager. I don’t think you’re at that point yet, but it sounds to me like you’re mistaking your nervousness with desperation, and neither of those are the same thing, nor should be equated to each other. It’s human nature to be nervous about this sort of thing, and to feel like you’ll strike out before you’re even up to bat. But if you keep telling yourself you’ll fail from the start, or that you’re bad with people and could scare them off, you will also never succeed. Make sense?”

He was a good listener, waiting for Ev to stop before he said anything at all. She couldn't help but feel relieved when Mr. Blishwick told her that her concerns were valid and complimenting her. Ev smiled and nodded, not really knowing what to say to that. She figured he had some advice or something else he'd want to say, so she simply waited. She didn't have to wait long before he spoke again. The first thing he said was that she needed to be herself. A moment later he expounded. "So ... you're telling me to just be myself and be confident?" That's what it sounded like he was trying to say. Honestly, it made sense and it seemed to be a good argument. Also, it seemed like something that Ev could do. "I mean ... I guess that's what I've been nervous about, that being myself will scare everyone away, but if you're right then the right sort of people won't be scared away, they'll like me for who I am from the beginning." That would be a relief, and it was a different way of looking at things. Ev normally let people get to know the real her little by little, not wanting to scare them off by being completely herself from the beginning. Maybe that was a part of her problem. The more she thought about it, the more distracted she was from her nerves and anxiety about the upcoming date. jimbo brian blishwick vi

@evelyn Jimbo smiled as she seemed to process his word vomit and condense it down to her being confident in herself. That was basically it. He had found that the more apprehensive clients typically had this problem – though he tried to stray from calling it that, a problem. Everyone wanted to be liked by their peers. That was human nature. Some could get by easily with just a smile or acknowledgement for doing well in something. Jimbo was one of those people. Rarely phased by the words of others and sticking to his own beliefs since they had never failed him before. Evelyn here was a classic case of wanting to be accepted by others for who she was. Simple as that. Her honesty and openness about that concern was the first step towards getting to where she wanted, whether or not she even realized that. “Believe it or not, even the most horrid of human beings have someone meant for them. I’ve seen it happen. The ones that run have their own demons to deal with, and that’s why they let themselves be scared. You won’t scare everyone away, and those that stick around will be that much more worth it because of that.” Jimbo knew that he thought it was an easy concept because this was what his life revolved around, but she seemed to get everything so far. “What do you do for a job Miss Estrada?” Jimbo asked, knowing that it was out of the blue. There was a chance he could use that as a way to explain how she could overcome her nervousness. He found that talking about one’s job, especially one they were good at, allowed a person to ease up and be more confident in their discussions. Teaching her that trick would be no sweat. "And I suppose a follow up to that question, is that your passion, or do you have other things you do that make you who you are?"

Ev felt herself let out a relieved breath when he told her that even the worst people had someone for them. Really? That was encouraging, as long as it was true. Normally she would doubt anyone who said things like this, but this man's job was to help people find the ones meant for them. Maybe he was right? She almost felt like an idiot thinking that, but at the same time she didn't. What if he was right? She nodded as he continued to say that the people that mattered would stick around. Just like what Dustin told her a while ago. "I think you're right." She could hear the surprise in her tone and grimaced, wishing she hadn't let that out. She felt her face grow a little bit hot, but tried to ignore that. He asked about her work and she smiled. "I play Quidditch for the Falmouth Falcons. Beater." She was proud of her job, but she didn't want to brag about it. She wasn't exactly sure why he wanted to know, but she was comfortable talking about her work. More comfortable than she was talking about her personal life, at least. She shrugged when he asked about her personal life. "I love my job and it is a passion for me, but I also love learning and reading ... and anything that's new and exciting." That last one wasn't something she normally told most people, but wasn't the whole point of coming to see him all about getting her out of her shell? jimbo brian blishwick vi

@evelyn Jimbo tried to contain the smug grin on his face when Evelyn told him he was right. Of course he was. He would be out of business if he wasn’t. Not even those horrible humans and their gross, sickening love could keep it alive at that point. People, like this girl, were the ones that kept the matchmaking business going. While the goal was to only have a client once in their lifetime, that didn’t prevent them from sharing how they met their partner, which would subsequently bring others by word of mouth. It was a refined art that had been crafter for the last few decades by his forefathers. Being wrong was impossible when it was scientifically and magically proven that the Blishwick boys were right on the mark with their predictions of love.
He tapped his finger on his chin as she listed off the things she liked to do, her job as a professional Quidditch player included in that. “Perfect! So this is starting to make more sense now,” Jimbo exclaimed. Being a public figure had to bring its own problems to the table. From experience working with other athletes and high-profile figures, there was sometimes a subconscious want to keep their public and private lives as separate as possible, even if that was impossible. Fans had their own set of rules in this game, and much like the fans of musicians and actors and actresses, those that had difficulty discerning between reality and fiction could muddy all of that. Evelyn was smart, so Jimbo knew he could safely (and unless she told him otherwise) assume that she wouldn’t want to let her fans down by being with the wrong person – something that could affect her team and game. At the same time, she was entitled to the life she wanted, and that was why he was here. “Any genre of books specifically? I’m not much for love stories since I see them every day, but a good mystery is always hard to pass up.”

He seemed to like what Ev was telling him, which was a little surprising to her, but not necessarily in a bad way. Maybe helping Mr. Blishwick understand her better would be another way of helping herself. Then he got excited, telling her that it was making more sense. Well good! Uhhh ... what was making more sense? She wasn't sure, but she didn't know what else he wanted her to say. Did he have more questions? Or was he filling in his own blanks? Ev had no idea, so she sat there and waited to hear whatever he was going to say next. Surely he'd have something to say soon enough. He asked about her preference for books and Evelyn shrugged. "I like everything," she admitted shamelessly. "Mysteries, informational, romance, horror, textbooks ..." she trailed off, not wanting to bore him too much. "I know that's kind of boring. Sorry." She didn't really know why she was apologizing to him, but it slipped out anyway. Why did she feel so self-conscious? jimbo brian blishwick vi

@evelyn Jimbo was secretly trying to get the girl to talk more and open up about her hobbies and interests. That would be key in her blind date. Being confident in herself had to happen first, and right now it seemed like they were only scratching the surface. This sort of confidence, or what Jimbo called it, was different from the kind Evelyn probably utilized in her Quidditch matches or with meeting fans. While those were at a professional level, it was very easy to put on a face in public and still have a rough go at it in private. The ones that excelled at that were politicians for a reason. She started explaining the genres she liked, starting off that it was basically everything, and for the most part it sounded good. And then she did exactly what he wanted her to do: she apologized for her interests being boring. “Stop,” Jimbo said, leaning forward in his chair and holding his hand up at her. “Stop. You were doing so well too.” He needed to be critical now, because he wouldn’t be able to assist her during the date. Knowing that his sudden interruption would probably confuse her, he leaned back in his chair to his original position again, letting the cushions pull him back in. “Let me explain. That conversation we just had, about your job and interests, was me trying to give you a practice run on the very first things your date might ask. Those are your things. Your hobbies and your life. Never apologize for the things you love. Those are what make up you,” he stated, extending his arm up and pointing straight at Evelyn with his finger.
“Remember how I said that the ones that stick around will be more worth it? This falls into that as well,” Jimbo backtracked slightly. “But you have to help them get to that point too. They need to see what you have as much as you need to see what they have.” Jimbo was sure Evelyn knew all of this already, almost everyone inherently did. The difference here was that they were putting it into words, which was way more difficult than doing it automatically through actions. “Be confident in yourself and what you enjoy. If you can do that, it’ll make it that much easier when the right person comes along. I can’t guarantee that it’ll be this blind date, or the next, or ten from now. But practice makes perfect, and you’ll know when,” Jimbo gave her a confident smile. The other obvious choice was for her to hire him, and he could do all the work for her, but he felt like she was one of the ones that would want to do it on her own in the end.

Ev froze when Mr. Blishwick told her to stop. Stop what? She wasn't exactly sure what he meant, until he continued. She must have done something he didn't want her to, or something that wouldn't go over well on a date. He explained almost immediately, which was nice for her. Ev wasn't in the mood for a guessing game right now, especially about something she was so nervous about. Stupid dating. She blinked when he told her not to apologize. She'd never really thought about this in the way he was explaining, that she needed to be okay with herself and with sharing her true personality with others. That was definitely easier said than done, but he was making sense to her and Evelyn was grateful for that. "So ..." Ev decided to try and restate what he just said, to make sure she understood him right, "So you're saying I need to open up to others about myself without apologizing for who I am, just let them see the real me?" It sounded about right, but her stomach clenched again at the thought. Ev was not good at opening up to others. She was glad that he was spelling it out for her. Maybe this was something she always did wrong. "Anything else?" her voice was a little hesitant now, but she watched him intently, wanting to know whether or not he had other suggestions. jimbo brian blishwick vi
