09.01.2024 Lily went there. She had pushed everything too far for Cordelia to handle anymore. Even amidst Eli’s protests and her own smattering of stuttered responses, it was like the Gryffindor was jetting down a path that was going to be almost impossible to stop. The warmness in her face that had formed during the silly jabs a few moments earlier was now a full blown red, competing with the scarlet of Lily’s Gryffindor tie. This was terribly embarrassing, even if it was a joke. Eli seemed to be fighting off Lily’s assumptions, but that was only going to make it worse. The more flustered someone got around her, the easier it was for the Gryffindor to strike. What a terrible first impression to have of Hogwarts students. First, there was herself, causing him to break his camera. Despite it being fixed immediately, there had to be lingering resentment somewhere in there. Absolutely no one could be fine after a situation like that. And second, having Lily Potter of all people slinging baseless rumors around without regards to who was around was the worst entrance to the school. Cordelia knew she could ignore them because nobody knew who she was, but she couldn’t speak for the American boy.
He asked if she had been hurt at all and Cordelia shook her head horizontally in a violent manner. Big actions and words were all that Lily understood, so she would have to make a lasting impression with this one. Unfortunately the red-head was staring down her new prey, and there was no way she was going to notice the look on Cordelia’s face. Eli continued to break down their encounter over the summer, and she continued to nod her head, though it almost seemed unnecessary as the story completed. Lily had turned the muscle-crunching hold into a reassuring pat on the back. Did that mean she understood it all and was joking? It was impossible to tell, but the Hufflepuff decided to roll with it. “Yeah b-boring…d-did you get any p-pictures of the gn-gnomes?” she asked over Lily’s shoulder. Just because she was embarrassed by her friend didn’t mean she had to shut down completely. Too many times that had happened over the years, and letting Lily pull her out of her shell slightly over the last year wasn’t going to go to waste now. Or maybe that was what Lily had been trying to do all along…

09.01.2024 While the situation they were all in had started out entertaining, it was quickly starting to lose its charm – the American boy wasn’t as tongue-tied as her hopeless Hufflepuff was when it came to the big kid conversations, granted it also looked like he could start sweating bullets at any minute if she kept pushing the right buttons. But anyone would do that when they were uncomfortable, and Lily was lucky enough to be born with the inability to be easily rattled like Cordie was, and to an extent, Eli as well. The latter was more so because he probably didn’t know what he was getting into by sitting in her train compartment - the former willfully letting herself be used for the excruciating torture Lily had chosen for the day. Regardless of how her two companions were reacting currently, the joking was growing stale and pushing Cordie any further would probably shatter everything that had been built with the girl in the last year. She didn’t want to do that, and the Hufflepuff was definitely the type to lock herself in the common room and not come out at all.
Lily kept her devilish grin and piercing glare going the entire time Eli explained what had really happened over the summer, refusing to blink or budge on her position, afraid that would show her hand and what she actually had planned going forward. As he finished, she was ready to admit she believed both of them, but Cordie beat her to it, asking the boy if he ever got any pictures of the gnomes. So she was interested in what he was doing after all. Lily flipped her head back around so she could see her friend, hair following closely behind in its typical wild, unkempt manner, causing Lily to shove it out of her face every which way, her fingers pulling strands of hair away to reveal that Cordie’s face had become significantly red in the last few moments. “Whoops,” she laughed, giving the Hufflepuff another reassuring pat on the back. Taking a deep breath to stifle the last few laughs, she tried putting on a more serious look, though her smile refused to budge from where it was. “I’m sorry. I should have known better than to do that with you.” Ruffling the top of the Hufflepuff’s head, Lily once again turned her attention to Eli. She wasn’t quite done with him yet. “So Eli, tell us about yourself. Obviously you’ve met my dear Cordelia already and the two of you both like cameras, but what else do you have going for you? Where are you from? Any siblings? Tell us your life story,” she paused momentarily before putting the finishing touches on it. “I won’t stop asking questions until you answer, so please don’t keep us waiting.”

THE ALARMING SHADE OF RED YET TO FADE FROM Cordie's cheeks was unsettling Eli. He kept flickering his gaze from the redhead to the red cheeks, afraid something was going blow. Be it the firecracker with the dirty mind, or the top of Cordie's head. It remained to be seen, but Eli tried to keep his cool. He'd been interrogated once or twice, but hardly ever by a fellow student. Was this what it was like to be 'the new kid'? He wasn't sure if he liked it yet. Maybe he'd like it more if Cordie so obviously didn't.
The dumb, loose look on Eli's face twisted in to a toothy grin at the mention of the gnomes. His butt nearly lifting off the seat as he gestured with both hands, "Yeah! Yeah I did!" He was triumphant after all. "I... man, I gotta show you sometime." He shook his head in amazement, his memory casting back as he stifled a snort of laughter. "Pretty sure one of the things flipped me off." With a shake of his head, he pulled at the sleeves of his stretched, plain navy sweater.
Lily, however, was quick to draw the conversational spotlight back where she wanted it - on him. Eli could have squinted from the force of it. Looking down at his lap, Eli scratched the back of his head. "Uh, okay..." He laughed a little nervously as he left his hand drop heavily back in his lap. "I'm from California. LA, mostly. I got two older sisters and one younger brother, he's on the train, too." Subtly, Eli popped a single finger up for every question answered briskly, his gaze far off as he thought. "Halfblood... I got a cat called Bean and I wanna be a Magizoologist when I get outta here."
Slumping back in to his chair, Eli grossed his arms and smiled cheekily, "That about enough for you?" One of his brows lifted a half inch higher than the other. "Need my blood type, wand core, my mom's maiden name?"

09.01.2024 Cordelia knew that Lily didn’t mean any of what she was saying, but the fact that she was saying it was still embarrassing to her. Living such an unassuming life didn’t mean she was ignorant of the Gryffindor’s words. That also didn’t mean she was immune to them. Eli had to have noticed what she looked like when she asked her question about the gnomes, though he answered regardless. She returned his grin with her own small smile as he excitedly explained that one of the gnomes had given him a rude gesture, and that he would show her the results at some point in time. Cordelia nodded her head that she wanted to see the photographs. There was something unique about magical creatures being printed out on photography paper, when normally they had no place belonging there. Moving photos were an entirely different story though. Before she could respond, Lily had turned back around to her and apologized, messing up her hair in the process. Scrunching her nose up as she tried to fix her hair by running her fingers through it, she listened to Lily begin grilling Eli about his entire life story.
Not being the best at small talk of the sort, Cordelia leaned back, her body sinking into the bench cushion as she peered over Lily’s shoulder while Eli talked. He said he was LA, a place she was all too familiar with because that was literally where every famous photographer she was into lived. It was basically a photographer’s paradise there, and while she could never handle crowds of people that size, she still desperately wanted to go there. Her attention was grabbed again when he said he had a cat, and his dream of being a magizoologist made sense, considering that he had been overly enthusiastic about snapping pictures of the gnomes over the summer. It was like putting pieces of a puzzle together in her head. Cordelia looked to Lily to see if her friend had anything else to ask as Eli finished, somewhat hoping the redhead would let him breathe for the first time since the train had started.

09.01.2024 The absence of sound from Cordie’s direction told Lily that her Hufflepuff was doing fine – if there had been a problem, she would have said something, or at least Lily liked to think she would have. There were certain aspects about Cordie that had her worried sometimes, like whether the girl knew how to speak up for herself, or if she was bottling up everything inside and not letting it out like a person should. If Lily had been in her place instead, and that was assuming she would be phased by a friend saying equally cringe worthy stuff about her life, she definitely would have bounced back with a jab or two. But that wasn’t how Cordie worked. Contemplating whether or not to turn back around and make sure her friend was okay, Lily was distracted by Eli’s ability to tell her all about himself. Had he reacted negatively (and he seemed like the type of innocent soul to do so), to her pokes and prods, then she would have put a stopper in it right then and there. Alas, he did not, and that must have meant Cordie was fine. Just to be safe, the Gryffindor made a mental note to apologize again later on if it seemed like the blonde was still a little frazzled.
“Oh! California has always sounded awesome to me. Lots of rich and famous people there, right? Ever meet any? Or are you actually one in disguise?” she narrowed her eyes, trying to dig her gaze into him as much as she possibly could, as if that would suddenly make him fess up to some great secret he was keeping all to himself. In the off chance he was, Lily would figure it out eventually. “My Uncle Charlie works with dragons, so that’s basically the same thing,” Lily stated matter-of-factly at Eli’s prospective job. “Ever gone with a magizoologist before? I sat on the back of a dragon once. Super cool my dude. Their scales are way sharper than you’d expect.” Lily turned back to see if Cordie reacted at all to her comment, hoping there would either be a look of utter disbelief, or one where the Hufflepuff knew she was going to say something ridiculous. “True story, I swear. Uncle Charlie knows loads of magizoologists too, so maybe I could put in a good word for you if you-” she cut herself off abruptly, corners of her mouth curling up daringly. She was going to make him beg for it, plead for her to finish what she was saying. Eli was in her game, and she held all the power. “Depends. Is that enough for us to get to know you? I don’t know about Cordie, but my life is pretty boring,” Lily shrugged. A little white lie never hurt anyone.

ELI COULDN'T HELP BUT THINK THE MORE HE SAT with the two girls, the more different they appeared. Beyond the obvious - quiet and loud. They really were like opposing reflections of one and other. And it was weird, to think they were so close that Lily almost jumped down his throat for information. He briefly wondered if the redhead would have been half as interested in him if he hadn't had some kind of interaction with her beloved friend. He doubted it...
"Uh..." Eli's eyes rolled to the ceiling as he thought. "Don't really know a lotta Muggle celebs..." He said, a little disappointed in himself. "Saw a couple of pretty famous Quodpot players once?" Eli wasn't a little clueless when it came to popular culture. If it didn't have scales, feathers or multiple legs, honestly what was the point? He liked Quodpot, though. And even Quidditch. But, even he knew they'd be disappointed by his obvious lack of hook-ups. God, he was lame...
Slumped back in to his chair, Eli still counted the fingers he'd rattled information off on, but the mere mention of riding dragons had him sitting forward in his chair like a shot. All wide, saucer eyes. He was hook, line and sinkered. "Your uncle is a-?!" He didn't even get a chance to finish his sentence, enraptured by the clean and easy way Lily had spoken of such connections. God, she was lucky. His dad though animals brought 'disease'.
"I haven't even seen a dragon in the flesh..." Eli admitted, his face crestfallen. "My dad wouldn't even let us have a cat until our mom poofed..." It was an offhand comment he said while his eyes were cast toward the window, under his breath and barely audible. He looked down at his hands and shook his head. "I see your game, though, Red." He said, his face breaking in to a fast smile that creased his cheeks. He rubbed his hands together conspiratorially. "What do I gotta do to get an in?" Both of his brows lifted, one quivering slightly higher than the other without intention.
Sitting back, but with a straighter posture. Eli briefly thought of Lily like a creature. Maybe a... pixie. Full of restless energy and mischief. But if Lily was a pixie then Cordie was... a Thestral. Because it was almost as if she could turn herself invisible. Or, perhaps that was Lily's ever growing shadow as she kept luring Eli in. His eyes briefly cast over her, hands flattened palm-against-palm as Lily brought her back in to the light. He didn't want her to feel forced in to sharing.
"Boring, huh?" He said, winking at Cordie slightly as he shifted more toward Lily. "Your... uncle lets you ride dragons..." He shook his head, rolling his eyes theatrically. "I just don't believe you, Red." He clucked his tongue and sighed heavily. "'Boring!'" He mocked, shrugging his shoulders up to his ears. "If that's boring then I want some."

09.01.2024 Lily’s uncle was a dragonologist? Somehow that didn’t surprise her as much as it should have, and the more Cordelia thought about it, the more sense it made. The wild, uncontrollable nature the Gryffindor had seemed like it would fit perfectly in that field of study, though when that would become more of a hindrance than a strength, she was unsure of. Cordelia had seen her friend in class before…and that pretty much said it all. Her own interests would lay with taking photographs of the dragons, if that was even allowed, more so than riding one, which Lily was more than overjoyed to tell them about. There were often times where Cordelia took what the redhead spouted off with a grain of salt, which, funnily enough, her story about being a werewolf was not one of those. The more ridiculous she sounded, the more likely it was true, so riding a dragon wasn’t far from the realm of possibility. The most daring thing Cordelia had ever done was, well, she wasn’t sure. Probably befriending Lily Potter. That was certainly dangerous on occasion.
It was hard to budge into the game that was being played. Eli looked as if he was on to what Lily was doing to him, which was something that had taken a few times to get used to, herself. The American boy sounded like he was hooked, probably exactly what Lily had intended to happen. She had a habit of prying without making it seem like she was, obvious by the way she stated that her life was boring. Cordelia snorted, not meaning for it to sound the way it did, her hands immediately covering her mouth and nose to prevent anything else from coming out. “Y-Yeah…she’s b-boring,” Cordelia nodded her head, attempting to back her friend up even though it was already too late for that. “L-L-Like the goo-good kind of boring.” Even if Lily was telling the truth, that her life was in fact boring, most people would kill for that. Eli said as much, or at least that was what the Hufflepuff read it as.

09.01.2024 “What the heck is a Quodpot?” Lily said aloud, though it was supposed to stay in her head. That tended to happen when she really wanted to ask a question. The best of her random outbursts like that always came in class, when she would decide to ask ridiculous questions about the versatility of spells and the things they could be used for in day to day life (because really, Transfiguration didn’t do much for her in her daily routine, other than give her poor grades). She didn’t even care about the fact that Eli had never met any celebs. The Quodpot question was all she wanted to hear about now, and how someone could become famous at it. Hopefully it wasn’t anything gross, because having ‘pot’ at the end of it made her think of chamber pot, and how muggles used to use that instead of toilets back in the day.
Lily wanted to blabber on and on about how cool dragons were, but Eli’s second comment, about getting a cat after his mom left, had her stopping before she even started. She didn’t need to hear or see more to understand what he meant or even how he felt. It was all in the body language, and it held similar to characteristics to how she had been over the last few months. Looking in a mirror while she was like that didn’t even elicit the same response in her that watching Eli did. She took his silence for herself, and didn’t respond until he asked what he had to do in order to see Uncle Charlie’s dragons and meet some of those fancy magizoologists. “For starters,” she began, wicked grin forming on her face, “you have to be my little errand boy for the entire year. When I call, you come running. I won’t make you do anything too awful, just stuff I don’t want to fetch myself, or get notes from class for me.” That sounded reasonable enough to her. If he had a problem with the first one, she could probably make a younger boy swoon over her and get him to do it instead, all for a quick peck on the cheek. As for notes, Cordie always gave her a copy regardless of whether she was in class at the time or not. Good old Cordie, saving the day like usual.
“And the second thing I want you to do, is to be friends with Cordie. This kid has aspirations, but I can’t always be around to help her out. So that’s up to you. Got it?” Lily glanced over her shoulder at the Hufflepuff, hoping to see her friend’s face turn a deep red color that could compete with Gryffindor’s deep burgundy red. Instead, Cordie was laughing about the previous comment on being boring; apparently Eli didn’t believe it. Sighing, Lily’s head flopped against the seat’s headrest, eyes flicking up to the ceiling as if she were in deep thought. “You want some? Hmmm….” She was stalling, attempting to make him squirm again, her throat elongating the hum as long as she could before coming to a stop with another sigh. “I could always make you a real man,” her eyes narrowing as they shot back down to meet his. “Or I could make you a werewolf…”

ELI'S EYES WIDENED IN SURPRISE, SHE DIDN'T know what Quadpot was? It was so difficult to explain, he spluttered slightly as he tried to figure out how best do it without confusing himself. Even he wasn't entirely sure. It was an insane sport from start to finish. "I uh... I guess it's kind of like Quidditch?" He said, though his face did not look convinced. "It's pretty massive back home." Which it was, but Eli had always preferred watching Quidditch matches, after all his dad had been a player. Plus, they were always easier to follow. "But... Quidditch is better."
Without a doubt, Eli much preferred to talk about dragons. Vaguely skimming over quadpot like he hadn't said a thing to begin with. Which might as well be true as he laughed, a wrinkle between his brows. "What, so I have to get you some notes and... maybe clean your room for a year?" He snickered, leaning back and crossing his arms like he expected her to retract her offer jokingly. "And you guarantee I get up close and personal with a dragon?" Eli wasn't convinced but he was interested. He sat forward and offered his hand to shake. "If you can get it in writing... we have a deal."
Shaking his head, Eli was frowning in disagreement, almost retracting his hand entirely. "You don't have to hire me to be friends with Cordie." Eli said, baffled at the mere idea of it. "I'd do that for free." He waved his hand, side-eyeing Cordie, he didn't think she'd like this whole idea. Especially since it was being done right under her nose. He worried that he might have embarrassed her, but she was laughing slightly as something else. "We can figure that out on our own, right?" He said, addressing her with a smile. Lily was definitely one of a kind, but he thought she could probably do with a little more tact. Which was really saying something coming from Eli. Cordie looked used to it.
However, Eli's attention was pulled back to Lily once again. Sitting forward, forearms braced on both legs as he looked at her intensely. "A werewolf...?" He echoed, in complete disbelief as he caught exactly what she was throwing for him. Okay, so maybe having a dragonologist for an uncle was boring after all. "I got another condition," He said after a beat, sitting up straight a secret smile on his face. "If I'm gonna be running after you, I wanna see a dragon... and I want to see your bite." Chin jutted upward, Eli's tongue poked out the corner of his mouth as he watched Lily carefully. He was also going to ask for a blood sample, but he figured he could negotiate that later.

09.01.2024 The conversation had dipped into something called Quadpot, and how it was mutually agreed upon that Quidditch was a better sport. She had heard about the American game before – it was similar yet different, and the way Eli explained it was probably for the best when it came to Lily’s intrigue. Arguing with the Gryffindor on that would have been impossible, seeing as she was a diehard fan. Cordelia had almost taken the team photos for Gryffindor before her own house’s team told them to bugger off and find their own housemate to do it. She had been willing to do it though, so it was kind of a bummer that Lily wasn’t playing anymore. Maybe a word with her after they got off the train could expedite the process this year. Just because Lily was done didn’t mean she was done. Anyone that thought that didn’t really know her.
Their apparent deal almost came to a close as Eli held his hand out, drawing Cordelia’s attention once again. Until Lily posed another offer. His friendship. The Hufflepuff’s head sank back into the seat cushion as she listened to them go back and forth again, Eli saying it was free. “Y-Yeah,” she responded to Eli from behind Lily. She didn’t need the redhead’s help with everything, though it was the thought that counted. It showed Lily cared, even if it was slightly annoying at the same time. Cordelia liked to keep things going at her own pace. Being tossed into a friendship like that would be rough and tumultuous. Lily was good at that. Cordelia wasn’t.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the worst thing to come out of her friend’s mouth in the last few minutes. Now Lily was offering up a werewolf bite. Cordelia’s hand instinctively reached for the hem of Lily’s sleeve, her face hardening as she sat up abruptly. “Lily…no…” It came out as a worried whine. That wasn’t something meant to be tossed around lightly. She could get in serious trouble just by joking about it. Her grip tightened on the shirt, a gently tug to show that she this was more serious than Lily was making it out to be.

09.01.2024 “Dang right Quidditch is better,” Lily grinned. She wasn’t sure if Eli was saying that to appease her or if he actually meant it. It was hard to tell sometimes, with how often people seemed to play themselves up around her. She couldn’t blame them though, she did the same when it was necessary. Everyone did. Either way, his potential sucking up to (or not), had her nodding her head as he asked if all he had to do was get notes occasionally and clean her room. Pretty simple stuff, really. He stuck his hand out, Lily reaching it for it immediately, but she stopped when it got to the Cordie part. She didn’t think that would be the snag in the deal. “You’re too nice, you know that?” she laughed, turning back around to look at Cordie again. Lily hadn’t expected her friend to agree with Eli, but she did. “Okay then! The deal still stands for the rest of the stuff though. So if that sounds good, then we can shake, write it down, make a blood pact. Whatever tickles your fancy.”
But that wasn’t it. Even with his awe and new stipulation about being a werewolf, not all of the parties in the cabin agreed. Lily hadn’t anticipated resistance from Cordie on that one. She thought the Hufflepuff would still be too flustered about the previous deal. She had underestimated Cordie. “Well you heard the lady,” Lily shrugged, Cordie’s hand still clasped onto her sleeve. “I can do the dragon deal still. If you really want to see a werewolf, maybe we can work a deal out with the school and the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.” She knew that sounded smarter than her first option and Cordie would be more willing to accept it if professors were involved. It could turn into a teaching experience, and what was more valuable than one of those? "I’d be under the effects of the Wolfsbane, so I’d be harmless. Like a big, sleepy dog, y’know?”

ELI'S DAD HAD ONCE PLAYED QUIDDITCH professionally, so it was easy for him to agree that the sport was superior. He'd grown up watching games, home and away. Quadpot might have been more popular among his American peers, but not for him. He felt almost biologically wired to prefer one over the other, otherwise his father might just disown him. "Yeah, my dad would kill me if I said Quadpot." He said, exaggerating mildly, because he thought if his dad didn't that Lily girl sure would. Though Eli didn't feel too nice, he still smiled in thanks when Lily said so.
"It's not like it's a huge deal." He muttered under his breath, lifting one hand to rub at his cheeks as if to wipe away the warmth that had filled them. Eli was much more interested in dragons than friendship pacts. "Maybe we can just shake for now..." Eli said with a laugh. "I packed away my sacrificial knives, you know." He jutted his chin up to his trunk in the overhead carrier, pushing his hand out to shake.
However, Eli was stopped short when Cordie seemed to disagree. It was the first time she'd verbally spoken up with such confidence that it immediately caught Eli's attention. He ran his thoughts over which part might have gotten her but had his own suspicions confirmed by Lily. As always, Eli didn't quite understand the caution, but he still took his hand back instinctively. If Cordie had taken the time to disagree then it must matter, right?
"Okay, fine." He nodded his head, only mildly disappointed at the new terms of their deal. At the very least he'd get to see a dragon, right? Beggars couldn't be choosers. "I'll feel out the professor and get back to you." And then he sat forward again to shake her hand. "Keep in touch about that dragon, yeah?" He shifted his gaze to where Cordie sat back in her seat. "That cool with you, Cordie?" He smiled at her, understanding suddenly that she was probably Lily's rational brain. He had a couple of friends like that himself.

09.01.2024 Lily…listened to her? That had never happened before. At least she didn’t think it had. There was a first for everything, and this certainly seemed like it was just that; a first to Lily listening and toning back on her offer to Eli. Cordelia knew that there was probably a number of factors at play here, like Lily not really intending to turn him into a werewolf, or that they were joking around the entire time. Things like that were hard for her to understand sometimes. She didn’t always take things literally, but with Lily it was hard to tell and she had heard all sorts of things come out of the Gryffindor’s mouth. The lack of a filter was terrifying and Lily didn’t seem to care that she was like that at all. At least she was the nice kind of honest instead of mean about it. Cordelia had run into a few of those types, none of whom could stand the fact that she liked to keep to herself and avoid conflict. As for Eli, he seemed to understand the change in the decision and took it well. So maybe it was a joke that she wasn’t understanding after all? “Y-Yeah that’s fine…” she said quietly as the attention was turned back onto her after Eli and Lily shook on their finalized deal. This was the conclusion she was trying to reach with her sudden outburst a few moments earlier after all. Better to be safe than sorry, as her dad said sometimes. That was never in regards to anything in particular, but was used more often as a way to ease her anxiety. Convincing her that she was better off to do something than to regret it was a lot easier than out right telling her to do it. In this case, speaking up had a positive response, whereas not saying anything could have resulted in Eli dying and Lily being locked up. She couldn’t have that on her conscience for the rest of her life when it was such an easy thing to stop in the first place. [Absolute garbo post, but call it the end?]
