DEFENCE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS HAD ALWAYS been a class bolstered on paper. And boy had Nate always loved the idea of it. Spells and strategy. Just the word 'defence' sent a thrill down his spine, it was his favourite stance, right after offence. Especially in an argument. And while its history boasted many legends, infamous and otherwise, Nate had always been mildly disappointed by the slug of it. It wasn't as fast paced as tales told it. Until recently.
Anybody with enough curiosity knew who Blaise Zabini was. Slytherin, around when Slytherin's were best known for was their ever-present connection to dark magic. Around for The Battle of Hogwarts. Rumoured Hit Wizard and well known Ministry member. He was... a legend. At least, to Nate. A well read, undercover fanboy. The school year was well under way by the time Nate decided enough was enough and grew the balls to single himself out.
It was easy to look good in a class full of students. Because, there was always someone dumber than Nate. He was a natural blender, but he'd always wanted to be The Best. He often worried it made him look needy. But, it was easy for Nate to wait for his class to filter out after the bell rang out. Some leaving fast, kicking up dust as they were run off by Zabini's hard techniques. Others lazy as they packed away parchment and quills. Nobody waited for Nate, he didn't have many friends. And the ones he did have weren't the waiting kind. Before he stood up, Nate packed slowly until not a soul was left, unwilling to be seen asking, but determined none the less.
He wandered to the front of the room as if he were passing Zabini's desk to leave. At the last second he stopped, pretended to backtrack a few steps and gripped his books tighter. "Hey, professor?" He asked, licking his dry lips. "I was just wondering, will you be hosting any extra curricular lessons for sixth years?" He cleared his throat, scuffed the heel of his boot against the floor. Zabini drew an intimidating figure. "I was looking to boast myself before OWLS."

The sixth years had more going for them than the fifth years that much was clear already. As far as Blaise was concerned though, none of his students were up to snuff with their curriculum and only a rare few were shooting par so far. Laying blame on their previous professors and their lazy teaching methods was too easy; though it shouldn’t have been. That said a lot about his alma mater and how much it had dipped in quality since his school years. Longbottom hadn’t even been a halfway decent headmaster, letting so many students be offed in a matter of a few years. Saying that the fiasco at the end of the previous year was on Minerva was ludacris. She simply inherited the mess that his former classmate had failed to fix. Now to say that his own personal teaching style was any better than any of his colleagues wasn’t right of him. Blaise definitely had more experience in the field of Dark Arts, the defense of them, and the proper application of spellcasting in a life or death situation. He was probably even more qualified than the joke of a Charms professor, and potentially the Potions one as well. They were both young and inexperienced in the working world, treating their jobs at Hogwarts like muggle graduate students did at private universities – teaching children barely older than they were. That may have worked in the muggle world, but experience meant everything in the magical one. Hell, he had a ghost for a professor, and despite Binns being the dustiest, driest lecturer the castle had ever seen, at least he knew what he was talking about.
Regardless, it was the end of the period and the sixth year unit he was finished with was shuffling out of the room, a few deciding to idle about, as if he didn’t have another class coming in right after this. In a minute or two, detention papers would be set down on his desk to prod them along to whatever they had next. Of course the ones that did decide to stick around were his own Slytherins, apparently thinking he would take favor with them. That was their mistake, because he despised suck ups. One even decided that he wanted to ask questions still, and Blaise looked up from his lesson plan for the next class in order to address the child. “Ever heard of being humble, Mr. Forrester?” he asked, eyes glaring over the top of his glasses. “And unless you want to be a fifth year again, I don’t think I’ll be holding any extra curriculum for your year. At this point in time, you should know how to study and work on your own.” Running two extra lessons programs at that same time would be too much work. It would require an entirely new set of plans that didn’t overlap with what the sixth years were currently being taught, and stray far enough away from the seventh years that there would still be something for him to teach them the following year. The only reason the fifth years got special treatment was because they were idiots.

AS HE LINGERED BY ZABINI'S DESK, NATE WAS entirely unsure how his request would be received. He didn't like the uncharted territory, never had, but it seemed so necessary. The pros outweighed the cons. But, what came out of the professor's mouth did not lift Nate's usually dull spirits. His brows pulled together, mouth turning down at the corners. His eyes narrowed.
"Can't say that I have, Professor," He remarked sarcastically. Nate's mouth had a way of running off without him. Especially when he felt the burn of rejection slipping under his skin. Plus, what kind of wet blanket cared about being humble? He wasn't trying to save the world, he wanted to be successful. For himself.
Sharpening his tongue with his back teeth, Nate's face flattened at his obvious dismissal. But, he wasn't quite ready to leave yet. "I don't want you to hold my hand while I copy out a textbook," Nate snorted, shifting from one foot to the other. "I wanna get ahead of the herd." He leaned forward, as if in a race. "You could recommend me a book, or someone who doesn't mind a little extra work?" He was toeing a line and he knew it, but he'd already been told no. What was a little snap to go with it?

Apparently he wasn’t finished looking over the edge of his glasses yet, Forrester’s mouth failing to shut-up yet. Dropping his grading quill onto his desk with an audible thunk, Blaise pulled his glasses off and massaged the corner of his eyes. This was exactly what he needed, a snarky Slytherin that was persistent too. He shouldn’t have expected anything less from the students in his house, he was once the same way. Though trying to suck up to Snape was like talking to a brick wall, and he only gave in when other loyalties took precedent. Blaise hadn’t realized that during his own tutelage, but it was a well-known fact by now. Forrester was lucky in that regard. He half hoped the child would disappear by the time he opened his eyes again, but no, there he was, standing in the exact same spot. Sighing, Blaise placed his glasses back onto his face, trying to decide what to do for the boy. Recommending a book was simple enough, but which one was the question. Anything too difficult would only open up more questions; anything to simple would require more books to work on after the first was finished. This was a can of worms Blaise didn’t want to get into, and making it look like he was picking a favorite was the last thing he wanted to do in his first term teaching.
“OWLs include all of the curriculum you’ve learned thus far, and very rarely deviate from that.” Merlin he hated that word. Curriculum. So far he had been cornered into using it multiple times. When students questioned him like this, bringing up the idea that ‘the curriculum couldn’t be changed’ was his go to when trying to shake them off. Sometimes it worked. It didn’t look like it was going to with Forrester. “Getting ahead of the herd, as you call your peers, will only serve to isolate yourself from them. If you don’t mind being the antagonist in class, that is.” That was one of the reasons Blaise was thankful for Draco being in the same year as he had been. His brother-in-law, then housemate, had done a decent job being the villain, allowing Blaise do what he wanted when it came to studying. “What do you really want?”

IT WAS SAFE TO SAY THAT NATE KNEW HE WAS an unwanted intruder in Zabini's class. Nate had perfected his ability to deduce the tension in a room. Be it to avoid confrontation at his old homes. Or, simply to know when was best to slip between the cracks. To pick a pocket while the person was forced in to a headlock by another.
But, he wanted knowledge more than he wanted invisibility in that moment. Plus, Zabini was new. And from his own house. Nate was testing the waters, checking to see how deep they ran before he drowned. "What if I... wasn't looking for something on the curriculum?" Nate asked daringly, his tongue pressed between his teeth and bottom lip. "Any old hat can pass an OWL."
Wrinkling his nose, Nate shook his head as frustration leaked in to his face. "I want to know something that... not everybody else knows." And it was true, he wanted to stand out. Not in Hogwarts, but the real wizarding world. And Nate had a feeling knowing the general basics wasn't going to catapult him ahead when the time came.
"Professor..." Nate said, shaking his head with a derisive laugh. "Nobody even knows I exist." And while this was perhaps an exaggeration, it was somewhat true. He was smart, but never ostentatious. He wasn't looking to brag... yet. He didn't need people to think he was better. "I want to be better..." He blurted out, almost as soon as Zabini had asked what he wanted. It was the first thought that sprung forth in his mind. "I don't care what anybody thinks about me, not if I know I'm better."

Something that wasn’t on the curriculum? The easy answer would have been to go read a book. Plenty of those had lessons, diagrams, spells, and history - the whole works - of more advanced magic that even Blaise wasn’t necessarily allowed to teach in class. Granted, there had been a bit of leniency by a few of his own Defense Against Dark Arts teachers. That was the same reason why four of them were dead, two locked in Azkaban for life, and the last one had his memories so addled he could barely function as a member of society anymore (though somehow still managed to create spawn that was equally ineffable). Becoming a statistic was not something Blaise had planned on doing, which was exactly why he kept to the safety of his syllabus. Anything more or less was sure to be a death sentence for him, as history dictated. “And any old hat can think it is more important than the next one,” Blaise retorted. He could care less how the child viewed him, he was merely stating a fact of life. Getting confidence and cockiness confused was an easy thing to do at Forrester’s age. Blaise let him continue though, because he was somewhat interested in knowing what the boy wanted to learn about. “You know that anyone can pass the OWLs and that I won’t be doing extra lessons outside of the normal class time,” he said sarcastically. He was going to make Forrester work for it, if he really wanted it.
Crossing his arms across his chest and rocking back in his desk chair, Blaise listened to the whining begin. He didn’t care if the other students didn’t know anything about the boy. That wasn’t his problem. At least the most introverted ones knew how to keep their traps shut and went through class without any issues. “And what will you do with it then? Once you’re ‘better’, as you call it. I’ve seen more witches and wizards wander down that path than you can even fathom, boy. Guess what? They didn’t care about what anyone thought about them either. Until they suddenly felt the urge to show the world what they had kept all to themselves.” Blaise knew that this could have been a question of wanting to be ahead in lessons for the year, or an advance on seventh year lessons, but it was better to be safe than sorry. “What is it then?” Blaise relented. Getting it out there was going to make his decision easier in the end.

NATE WAS BEGINNING TO BECOME FRUSTRATED. He hadn't expected so much resistance. Wasn't it a good thing that students wanted to learn more? A thirst for knowledge and all that shit. But, Zabini was going to need some convincing. Nate just wasn't sure he knew how to sway a guy as rigid at him. "I'm not important," Nate said, his nostrils flaring. "That's the problem." And it almost sounded ground out, like grit between his teeth.
Shaking his head, Nate refrained from rolling his eyes. "Is that supposed to be funny?" He asked, gesturing with one hand. "I didn't know this was a joke to you." He was mumbling now, ready to give in. He could find another willing participant, he was sure. But, he didn't really want anybody else to teach him. He admired Blaise, that was the truth. Though he'd never say as much.
Shifting from one foot to the other, a small smirk slipped on to Nate's face. "Bro, I'm not trying to kill any body." He scoffed, this time he did roll his eyes. Nate knew Blaise had been at Hogwart for the war. It was part of the reason he was so interested. "Or... be immortal." It even sounded dumb coming out of his own mouth. Nate crossed his arms, shrugging his shoulders. "I meant... Occlumency. Maybe Animagi." He looked somewhere over Blaise's shoulder. Expecting another rejection and preparing to give in. "I just want something I can apply when I'm out of this place."

This whelp was starting to get on his nerves. Throwing a pity-party? As a sixth year? If he was hoping to pull some sort of sympathy from Blaise, he was gravely mistaken. Blaise had ripped evidence from criminal’s minds that this child would hopefully never be able to fathom. Memories that were personal were no longer that once he finished obliviating. Most of the time all he had to do was threaten making them forget their mother’s name and face, or the day their child was born. That did the trick. He felt more pity for criminals as they blubbered and asked for forgiveness, than he did for Forrester’s piss-poor attempt at guilt tripping him. “None of us are anyone. Very few can ever be special. You,” he pointed at Forrester, before jabbing his index finger into the center of his chest, “are not special. Neither am I. Not even Harry goddamn Potter is special anymore. The ‘boy who lived’ is now the ‘man who’s missing’. Taking down the darkest wizard of this last half-century doesn’t even grant you that title. Welcome to life kid,” Blaise scoffed, shaking his head slowly as he leaned back into his chair, the pressure causing it to sink down.
The whining was incessant, and so was his use of vernacular. Blaise was nobody’s ‘bro’, especially a student’s. He would let that one slide for now, because his choice of disassociation from the Dark Lord was a striking comparison to make. This child had absolutely no idea what he was talking about, his ignorance only becoming more glaringly so every time he opened his mouth. “And what makes you think Occlumency is something to apply after leaving school? I have my reasons for it, and to hide my thoughts is at the bottom of that list.” Blaise decided against going any further. Pushing Forrester more, shutting him down every step of the way, would only do the opposite of what Blaise wanted. The kid didn’t have anything of value in his head that someone would want, so there was no reason to protect his thoughts. One flick of his wand, and Blaise would know exactly what Forrester had for dinner last night and what girls he fancied. Putting him through that would actually be fun, and a swift kick by reality for the Slytherin boy. “Alright, fine. I’m going to humor you,” Blaise said, shooting up from his slouch, wand flicking a chair into a clear space in the classroom. “Sit in that chair. You’re going to stop me from entering your thoughts.”

NATE WASN'T FEELING SORRY FOR HIMSELF, AT least he didn't feel like he was. More, it was a factual problem he aired only because he thought Zabini could help him with that. He was a smart, admired individual who knew what Nate wanted to know. It made him valuable. But, he was slowly realising that he wasn't good at sucking up. Proven by the sharp tone of Zabini's voice, cutting Nate to the bone.
"Well, that's not what my mama says." Nate quipped sarcastically, turning his head with a roll of his eyes. He kissed his teeth, arms crossed as he waited to be dismissed, as he expected to be. "I don't care about Harry Potter, I never did." Nate said, because while he'd read up on the elusive and infamous Chosen One, it had never really stuck out to him. He didn't want to be chosen, there was no earning in that. It was plain dumb luck.
"I've thought about working for the Ministry," Nate said, his eyes flickering to Zabini and away again. He didn't want to be shot down, told he wasn't good enough before he even got out of the gate. "Auror, maybe." Coming from where he'd come from, Nate had often been told he wouldn't amount to anything. It was something he'd heard and decided to ignore for some time. But, it'd be different hearing it from Zabini, whether he was willing to admit that or not.
However, when Zabini sat up, Nate almost reared back. He hadn't been expecting that. In fact, he found it entirely suspicious as he frowned at the professor. Expecting a very loud rebuttal the moment he agreed. But, Nate couldn't afford to be picky. He crossed the room in three quick strides, sitting on the summoned chair before it had even stopped moving. A firm hand on the back as he threw himself in to it gracelessly. He'd read about the how of the skill, but he'd never been able to apply it before. Dipping his head, his hands clawed on the arm rests of his chair, his entire body tensed for an invasion.

Go to Hogwarts. Teach the children how to defend themselves and about how the real world worked beyond their textbooks and tea leaf readings. It would be fulfilling and allow the Ministry to have a hit-wizard and Obliviator on the premises in case things started falling apart once again. Because who were they kidding? It was going to happen again, he was sure of it. There were too many students at Hogwarts now, far more than the Ministry and two school’s worth of professors could really handle. Dealing with the children would be difficult enough, let alone terrorist attack number three in as many years.
Those were the things Blaise should have been worried about. How so far, the teaching gig was failing his expectations. How he was expected to be a parent to hundreds of kids, instead of just his two, coddling them and telling them everything was going to be fine. Why lie? And here Forrester had the audacity to whine that his ‘mama’ thought he was a special boy. Jesus Christ. This boy was supposed to be what, sixteen years old? It was despicable. All Blaise could do was shake his head in disbelief, and he hated having to do that because it meant the other party was being impractical. Cutting to the chase was more efficient and less time consuming, an ideal he had been trying to instill into all of his lessons, but which he had seemingly failed on Forrester’s front. Of course he wasn’t just a student, but also a Slytherin. That made it worse.
“You should care about Harry Potter,” Blaise responded. “Because he was the one that made the Auror qualifications more lenient on who they let in.” The kid wouldn’t last a day in an intern position under any of the politicians that was for sure. The Auror program was intense, but Blaise could see him cracking in a matter of months. There were some parts that were used on newly appointed hit-team members as well, and they were absolutely brutal. Knowing Occlumency or Legilimency wasn’t going to assist much in those areas.
But that didn’t mean he couldn’t give Forrester a taste of what was to come. Breaking into the child’s head was going to be simple, especially with the way he decided to situate himself in the chair. Blaise almost told him to relax but decided against it; he needed to learn the hard way. A proficient Legilimens would have jumped right in at that point. Unfortunately Blaise wasn’t a master of that yet, nor intended to be. He had messier methods that the Obliviators had taught him. “What would your mother say if you failed?” Blaise asked, wand immediately casting a simple memory probing charm at the Forrester boy. Now all he had to do was wait and see what happened.

NATE TRIED TO PRETEND LIKE HE DIDN'T CARE that Harry bleeding Potter had made it easier to be an Auror. He didn't need it to be easy... But, that had not been how Zabini had phrased it. He had specified that it was more lenient about who got in. His mind immediately tripped over his various petty theft charges in the Muggle world, and the few he'd been caught for in the Wizarding one, too. All he managed was a stiff shrug, lips pulled down in a badly formed look of carelessness as he looked out one of the misty glass windows in the classroom.
But, quickly he was sitting stiffly in the chair Zabini had summoned before him. He had been so forward with his attempt to convince the professor to teach him that, when he was finally sitting in the chair, his mind went oddly blank. What would happen? He did not know. But, something else licked at the corners of his thoughts, something a bit more unsettling... 'What will he find?', and it was almost as soon as he'd thought such a thing that Zabini brandished his wand with a simple question.
"I don't know." Nate's mouth opened and dropped out his thoughts before he could even gather them. He thought about the cold orphanage for strange little children, and how he'd never known who had given birth to him. Probably a simple muggle, he reckoned, with a sickening disappointment attached to it. The only person who cared about Nate's failure was himself, he thought. "Why're you asking me that?" Nate snapped, lifting his head to shoot Zabini a seething look. "Shouldn't you be able to tell me?"

Blaise hadn’t realized until he cast the charm that he had Forrester completely wrong. The attitude problems, the aggressive nature in which he had asked, no, demanded, to be taught higher level magic, had seemed like he was raised as one of the coddled children. The ones that got everything they ever wanted in life. The ones that could get away with acting out. The ones that really didn’t need to go far in their career paths because they had a comfy nest egg to fall back on that was older than they were. Oh how he was wrong.
The probing charm didn’t nail down exact memories in the sense that Blaise could see the visually. If he wanted to do that, he would have brought a pensieve with him to Hogwarts and grabbed some movie theater popcorn to enjoy the show. Any of the higher tiered spells that would have granted him access to Forrester’s mind were either illegal to use outside of Ministry means or too mind shattering. He wanted to teach the boy a lesson, not leave him braindead.
What he did get from the spell though, was a coldness. Maybe even emptiness. Loneliness. To have that brought forward from asking the kid about his mother could only mean a number of things, none of which Blaise thought imperative to proving a point. “I’m asking you that because you leave your mind open. It’s like a book. Even with a simple charm like the one I just used, I know what would seem like the most unimportant details about your mother,” Blaise explained as he ended the charm. “Or lack of one. Everyone’s mother is usually their weakest point. All I had to do was ask, and you thought about it without realizing it. Hell, I don’t even need to know what you were thinking to get that from you. It’s written all over your face.”
Blaise sighed, and began to mentally kick himself as he continued, knowing that what he was about to say could come back to bite him at some point in time. “I can teach you, but you aren’t ready for it yet. You need to have your emotions under control to even think about blocking out a non-invasive spell, not to mention someone trying to use the Imperius Curse or Legilimency on you.” This was all because he felt pity for the kid, wasn’t it? His wife would applaud him for that, but Blaise was starting to hate that something like that even came across his mind without someone else bringing it up first. Hogwarts was making him soft.

NATE DID NOT LIKE BEING READ SO EASILY. IT curdled inside of him, that narrowed look on his face flattening in to an expression of wild panic as he realised just how quickly Zabini had picked apart his inferiority. He was not of pure blood, nor was he of extraordinary brood. He was just another child abandoned and filtered through the system. A Muggleborn who had gotten lucky, or so his mind would be read.
Shifting his gaze quickly, Nate gripped the arms of his chair and fought his overwhelming desire to flee. This had been what he signed up for. He wouldn't leave until he had stepped in the right direction. Nate had no intention of taking a step back, never again. "I don't-" Nate began, but he stopped before he could make a fool out of himself. Or rather, more of a fool out of himself. But, when Zabini did not immediately continue his quiet picking of Nate's character, the young boy was forced to lift his gaze and catch his eye once again. He did not like what he found there.
Gone was the derisive professor who looked at Nate with a mixture of disinterest, irritation at best. In its place was a blankness that Nate had seen before. The kind of face someone pulled when they knew that he was a sad, orphaned whelp with nothing behind him and nothing before him. Or so Nate assumed. He launched himself from the chair with a mounting frustration.
"Well then, what do you suppose I can do about that?" Nate asked angrily, his nostrils flaring. "Meditation, Yoga?" He retorted, heavy sarcasm colouring his tone. He'd heard plenty of speeches about how to find 'inner peace' with his 'demons'. How to 'positively' use his 'destructive energies'. It never worked and he couldn't help but immediately assume that Zabini was pawning him off in an effort to avoid the task of teaching him.
"When will I be ready?" He added, forcing himself to lower his voice and draw in a deep breath, though it wound up in his chest like a ball of barbed wire. "Have you read the paper lately?" He said in a last ditch attempt to sway the professor, a sharp and humourless smirk on his face. "Kind of feels like now or never for Muggleborns."

Forrester looked like he was ready to bolt. Blaise had seen those emotions before; whenever he turned down a potential applicant for the Obliviators or the Hit Squad, it was like flipping a switch on the person’s face. Rejection, and ultimately the realization of failure, always tended to lead to this point. Blaise used to savor that moment. Far more were turned away, their dreams to be part of something big shattered. Unfortunately that wasn’t how the world worked, and not everyone could be someone. Those sorts would find out eventually anyways, and he liked to think it was better coming from his mouth than one of his peers in the Ministry.
But Forrester wasn’t a potential new hire or even close to be qualified for a position at the Ministry. He was asking to be taught advanced magic during his sixth year. It was ambitious. All the more reason for Blaise’s words to sting much harder than they were intended to. Personally, he thought he had gone easy on the boy.
“Sure. That could work,” Blaise shrugged. The panic was setting in now, he could tell. “Everyone is different though. Clearing your mind and not letting things get to you is the first step. It’s just another form of magic in the end.” Like flying a broom for the first time or disapparating. They all became second nature with time, and while Occlumency and Legilimency were slightly more invasive forms of magic, that didn’t mean they were impossible. Forrester seemed to have it in his head that having anything other than instant success meant it was a failure.
The boy tried to keep himself under control but still wanted to rush the process, causing Blaise to shake his head in disappointment. He would never learn with that attitude. “Who knows? Could be tomorrow or a few years from now. Maybe never,” Blaise stated bluntly. That was the truth. He had almost given up on it, and that was after mastering the hit department training regimen. A child thinking he could figure it out with a snap of his fingers was laughable. “And it’s been like that for almost thirty years. If you’re that worried, focus more on your defensive spells than this. Nobody is going to break into a muggleborn’s mind when they could just as easily murder you.”

THE HARSH REALITY OF ACCEPTANCE LEADING TO immediately rejection was setting in for Nate. No matter how barbed he became, Zabini was unflappable. Nate doubted he'd reached that level of cold zen doing yoga and listening to Enya. Though he said neither, already fuming from how easily Zabini batted him away. "Yeah, how about you save the pep talk for somebody you're actually going to teach." Nate snapped, lifting his arms and letting them drop noisily against his sides.
The sting of the word 'muggleborn' danced all over Nate's skin before stabbing him right in the back. He snorted a scoff, rolling his eyes coolly as acceptance finally began to set in. He wouldn't beg, or plead for Zabini to change his mind. He'd put himself out there and it hadn't worked, that was reality. It shouldn't bother him so much, but it did. His pride was ringing, like after a very hard slap. "Cool, Prof." He took a step back and then another. "I'll guess I'll see you in the next life for my next lesson, eh?" And then he turned and walked off, but not before flashing his middle finger over his shoulder as he left.
