ONDINA WAS WELL READ, TO SAY THE LEAST. A childhood cooped up at home, with only herself for company, well she'd found many creative ways to fill her time. And though she'd never be caught dead with a piece of fiction cracked in her lap - preferring only to be seen with tomes of spells and non-fiction - she did have a taste for the fantastical. Though, in terms of fiction, she'd always had a soft spot for the Muggle sort.
Flourish & Botts sufficed at a moments notice. Especially when Ondina's copy of Wandless Magic Through The Ages cracked at the spine, losing its aesthetic appeal. They had an array of editions, giving Ondina a perfect moment to hide from the sun and find her next copy. Low lit to protect the precious oils, or whatever.
Ondina was palming the cover of a gold-leaf special edition when her eyes lifted and scanned the room out of bored curiosity. They happened to land on the silhouette of a blonde girl she definitely recognised. Vaguely, the way one would a familiar piece of wall art. And then it clicked in to place - Bainbridge. Ondina was only a little familiar with the blonde's sister, and the only thing they had in common was their choice of extra-curricular activities.
Setting the book down, Ondina wandered across the room impulsively. Her mind filtering through the heap of Bainbridge names. They said Weasley's procreated like rabbits. Well, if that were true, the Bainbridge's procreated like rats as far as Ondina was concerned. Sidling up to her, Cara gently brushed her arm as she passed.
"Hello," She said, as if intimately familiar, a beatific smile on her face. "It's... Cara, right?" She hoped she was right, it was easily mistaken. The only thing that made it a fraction easier was her twin being a member of the same elusive group as Ondina. And this, of course, was the root of Ondina's curiosity. What made Diana different. Or, rather, what made her sister different?

It was starting to happen again; frequent breaks and elongated trips into the outside world, all to escape from her writing. Cara didn’t necessarily hate what she was working on, she just felt that it wasn’t important enough to crank out page after page when she would finish it all the same. There were no deadlines, pressure was only coming from herself to write something that was noteworthy, and she didn’t have to worry about paying bills because her parents were kind enough to let her stay at home throughout the whole process. Any stressors that were weighing down on her (and there were a few currently) were self-made and all in her head. Being in a different profession, if this writing thing could even be called that yet, from her few friends and now without her siblings around the house, Cara thought that the peace and quiet would help. Merlin she was wrong about that. The scratch-scratch of her pen on parchment when notetaking was absolutely maddening at times, the irony here being that she would have killed to get this sort of silence whilst at school. The silence and flexible schedule weren’t doing it for her, and she was starting to miss the distractions and rigidness that accompanied Hogwarts. But there was no going back, unfortunately, and in order to become a productive member of society like her other siblings out of school, she needed to write this damn novel of hers.
That could come after a quick trip to Diagon Alley and more specifically, Flourish & Blotts. Cara didn’t have a reason for it, other than to gleam what other fiction authors wrote like. Her genius idea was to go into the bookstore, browse for a bit, and potentially buy a couple books that were in the same genre as her own. This seemed like a great idea in theory, until she glanced at her wrist watch and noticed that it had been well over an hour since she had entered the store and she hadn’t even gotten to the section she was supposed to be in. It figured that this was exactly how it was going to go.
The touch on her arm from a passerby elicited an awful shiver, originating at the impact point and pulsating throughout her body. The simultaneous shock of realization that she wasn’t alone in the aisle and graze from her woman now addressing her had her blinking in confusion, even more so once her name was said. The realization that the woman in front of her was Ondina Weasley only helped explain her body’s automatic reaction to the touch; if Cara was considered a bitch by some, Ondina was the queen of them. Even she knew that. Sharing classes for the last seven years had been a thrill, to say the least. “Ondina,” Cara responded rather formally. She didn’t care if her former classmate remembered her name or not, if that was a question so many years later than it obviously didn’t matter to Ondina to begin with. “Can I help you with something?” That came out a lot more confrontational than she had intended. Old habits did tend to die hard though, and currently Ondina was butting in on her busy schedule, even if she had been putting a sizeable dent in it herself.

ONDINA HAD ONLY WISHED FOR A DISTRACTION. Which, of course, could mean anything from a blow out fight to a simple conversation. She wasn't fussy, really. And, if her memory served her well, approaching the Bainbridge girl could go either of those ways. She eyed Cara as she spoke, a shrewd slant to her eyes when she smiled. The tone of Cara's voice eluded to nothing. Ondina would have to dig deeper.
"'Can I help you'," Ondina imitated with a wobble of her head, her nose wrinkling slightly, but her lips still quirked at the corners. "That's awfully formal, I didn't know you worked here, Cara." In fact, Ondina knew she did not, she was simply picking away at edges, hoping something stuck.
Shifting in place, Ondina moved her gaze around the stacks absently. "We're old classmates, you know." She said conversationally, disregarding the coldness in Cara's original statement. "I thought it would be rude if I didn't at least say hello." Shrugging one shoulder, what she'd said was perfectly nice. But, like most of the things that slipped from Ondina's mouth, they were laced with a sharpness some held little appreciation for. Intentional, or not. "What are you up to nowadays?"

Hearing her question bounced back at her was like having fingernails dragging down a chalkboard: chilling and unwanted. Cara had been unaware that the Weasley girl was part parrot, though that would certainly explain her wildly red hair, need to squawk at anything that moved, and overall nastiness. And just like a bird, she reeked. Reeked of fake emotions, conversations - everything. Cara hated that. What was so wrong with being straight-forward with someone? Cutting to the chase and being up front solved a lot of problems then and there. Beating around the bush, like she was sure Ondina was trying to do with her right now, was a waste of time. Her time. Cara hated that too, wasting time.
Looking away from the Slytherin girl so that her eye roll couldn’t be seen, Cara decided to jump in before it was Ondina controlling the conversation entirely. She couldn’t have that happen. “I don’t. So if you need help finding a book, I’m sure the girl at the front desk could help you. She looked absolutely bored out of her mind when I got here.” And also wouldn’t shut up at first too. What was it about people trying to talk to her in a bookstore? These were exactly like libraries, they were temples filled with sacred texts, meant to be observed in near silence. Anything louder than the scratch of a quill or crinkle of a page turning didn’t belong in either. Cara had to give the attendant a pass though because it was the girl’s job after all. Ondina did not get one though. Every second she was standing there was another second Cara hated her even more than she already did. A real reason wasn’t needed, aside from that she annoyed the hell out of her.
Ondina chose to take the moral high-ground though, Cara staring at her blankly as she did her spiel, ending it with a question about what the Ravenclaw was up to lately. “Then hello. And nothing important. Personal research. Which is what I’m doing right now.” Turning back to the shelf she had been going through, Cara pulled out a book that had caught her eye a few minutes earlier. She wasn’t actually interested in buying it, but anything to avoid Ondina’s questions would be welcomed. Whether or not that actually shook the snake off of her was something she would find out here pretty soon.

AS IF TO CONSIDER IT ONDINA LET HER EYES find the girl at the front desk. She blinked blandly, she didn't need help finding anything and she was perfectly aware of the easy dismissal Cara was offering her. She was also very much settled on the fact that she had no intention of taking the hint.
"I don't need help at all." She informed Cara, that same red smile on her face. Entirely unmoved, bar the slight narrowing of her eyes. "Plus, it's hardly my job to entertain the help." She shrugged one shoulder, picking at her manicured nails where she clasped her hands at her front.
Was it simply instinctual to linger when unwanted? Ondina didn't possess that social awareness where situations like this made her uncomfortable, or awkward. Being unwanted was part of bothering people in general. And Ondina knew the longer you lingered, the more likely you were to get what you wanted. If only so you would simply disappear from sight. That innate desire to 'keep the peace'.
"Research, hm?" She blinked like it interested her. In reality, she was just being nosy. "That's interesting." Except it definitely wasn't. She was unfazed by the clipped tone Cara was using toward her. Another thing she was acutely familiar with. "What about your sister, how is she these days?" That connection was the only one Ondina had. She would push the research eventually, but not right now. She had time, after all. "Your family is almost worse than mine when it comes to breeding."

Cara desperately wanted to snort when Ondina said she didn’t need any help. Sure she didn’t. Maybe not with finding a book, but she certainly needed assistance in not being a colossal annoyance. The fact that the redhead saw nothing wrong with the way she acted was absolutely baffling. Ondina wasn’t stupid; Cara knew that. But there was something missing, and the Ravenclaw had no idea what it was. She was tone deaf to all sorts of emotions that her siblings exhibited, so figuring out a problem that someone she didn’t care about had was far from anything she felt like putting time into. Her dismissiveness of the store’s worker was astounding, though Cara found herself agreeing on it just the same. “Fair point,” Cara responded, not really caring enough to continue dragging that part of their conversation out longer than it needed to go.
This was wonderful. Cara had been hoping that she could brush off Ondina’s unwanted questions by stating she was busy doing work. Of course that wouldn’t end the way she wanted it to. “It is interesting,” she confirmed. Cara wanted to follow up by asking Ondina to excuse her, but she wasn’t fast enough, the conversation shifting to her sister. “Which one? I have five.” Her jaw clenching at the comment about her family ‘breeding’ quickly. It wasn’t her parents’ fault that they managed to have a set of twins and triplets. That happened to plenty of people, and they dealt with it accordingly. Obviously they could have talked more with Kinsey about being so much of an attention snob. That was a little detail though, and Cara didn’t take kindly to someone she barely knew looking down on her family. The self-deprecation in the statement, if it could even be called that, about the Weasley family being the same was a false front most likely. Cara didn’t trust Ondina to make a light-hearted joke about herself like that. “Must be dreadful, having a dozen or so heads turn any time your last name is called. Can’t imagine what it’s like.” Even though she could. There were always distinctions though, because she had a twin. That almost always meant automatically defaulting to their first names. The flaw in the system was Kinsey’s existence in Ravenclaw, having someone call out their surname only to then realize they needed to distinguish which one they wanted. Cara supposed that barely mattered anymore with her and Diana out of school now.

WITH THE APPEARANCE OF AN EASY SHRUG Ondina allowed the point to end there. The fact that Cara was the one to give in gave her a fizzle of excitement. It was now a countdown to whenever the girl would truly have enough. This was a tightrope Ondina had walked many times before. Was Cara the type to blow up, yell when she reached her limit? Ondina was. It was only a matter of time before she found out just who Cara was.
"You're sure of yourself," Ondina retorted with a small, tinkling laugh, as if Cara wasn't simply echoing whatever Ondina said. It was an easy jab, to plead arrogance when it came to her work. "Oh, I have no interest in the infants," Ondina said with a beatific smile. "I'm talking about Diana." As if it were obvious, which it was. She wasn't foolish enough to not notice when someone was avoiding the obvious. Hell, she did it herself every day.
And while Ondina had done a damn good job of maintaining her snake-like smile, it did sour at the corners when Cara spoke of the Weasley name. Her clawed fingers clenched where they were clasped at her front. Red half moons pressed in to her knuckles. "Well, it's not as irritating as it used to be." Ondina said, her molars gritted. "We're quite accomplished now, you know?" And then her smile grew, with arrogance and a simmering anger.

Merlin, her laugh was dreadfully annoying. If technology worked in Diagon Alley, she would have shoved earbuds into her ears just to drown out the hideous sound being emitted from Ondina. They were excellent at muting out the surroundings, and were utilized often both at home whilst trying to work, and out in public with muggles. Their chatter about unimportant things always managed to give her a pounding headache. Nonetheless, Cara’s hand instinctively went down to her jeans pocket, her finger tips outlining the wire in her pocket and reminding her that they would be useless here. Ondina would surely take that as a sign of victory and never let her hear the end of it too. Cara didn’t need any of that right now.
Still, having the redhead shut-up was the most ideal outcome. Cara took more offense to the integrity of her book research than she did to the jab at her sisters; they were all almost grown adults, she didn’t need to defend them forever, even if slanderous words were tossed at them behind their backs. Ondina didn’t need to know what the research was about, and she would have to force veritaserum down Cara’s throat to get that out of her. Having naysayers before the book was even written, and that was assuming she could pull it off in the end, was annoying as hell. She had enough self-doubt as it was, and adding a slimy snake’s two-cents on top of it wasn’t helping. “Neither do I, really,” Cara shrugged at Ondina’s comment about her younger sisters. She wasn’t far off the mark on them: Peyton was fine as she was, but Seph was an emotional train wreck without good reason, and Penelope was whatever. And then there was Kinsey. Cara didn’t have anything nice to say about her today, so she kept it to herself. “Diana? She’s doing whatever it is she does. Cursebreaker training or something like that. Just because she’s my twin doesn’t mean I need to know what she’s up to every waking moment.” That and trying to understand Diana lately was like holding a conversation with a brick wall. Now, how that related to Ondina’s interest, Cara was unsure of. As far as she knew, the two of them had barely interacted during school, if at all.
“Why? Didn’t know you cared about the well-being of anyone other than yourself. If I’m mistaken, please correct me,” she added, a harsher tone waking up in the last sentence. She wasn’t going to be Ondina’s prey today. Turning it up a few notches wasn’t going to hurt at all either, and the worst that could happen was getting kicked out of Flourish & Blotts. That was unlikely though, considering the aforementioned employee looked like she was ready to fall asleep at any moment, and breaking up a shouting match between teenage girls was asking for even more trouble. “Not irritating because you’re riding off their success, or because you’re unimportant in this big, wide world? Personally, I think I’d like the anonymity. But I’m nobody to begin with, so what do I know?” Cara tilted her head, her lips pulling downward in a small pout. Two could play at this game. She could definitely out-bitch Ondina Weasley.

IT WAS QUITE OBVIOUS THAT ONDINA WAS wearing on Cara, and faster than she usually could, too. Her clipped, vague answers and her flat stares spoke volumes. She wasn't even pretending. And perhaps it was odd that Ondina enjoyed these sort of reactions, but that was only when she felt like she was winning. Cara was holding out in different ways. With a dull, disinterest.
"Oh, so you don't talk?" Ondina said, stretching Cara's words further on purpose. Her head tilted, owl eyes wide, like she was concerned or something. "That's sad." It was almost like she cared, but look a little closer and the slight curl to the corner of Ondina's lips was almost noticeable. Because, for Ondina, it wasn't very sad at all. It was just a fuse.
"Well-being?" Ondina snorted, turning her head slightly to look around before she looked back at Cara. "Who said I cared about their well-being?" She didn't elaborate further. Because she knew no merit in advancing. It was clear, if she looked close enough. Ondina didn't care about their well-being. She cared about their reputation. Vastly different, in terms of priorities.
"It definitely helps." Ondina said sharply, shrugging her shoulders. Though, a simmering irritation was clear in the way she picked off the label on a display book. With the pointed, flick of her ruby-red painted nails. "But, that is really just your opinion." Flicking her hair over one shoulder, she managed a razor of a smile. "Plus, like you said," She continued. "Why would I care about the opinion of a nobody?" The white flash of her teeth, and she even laughed a little.

“Why would we talk?” Cara said matter-of-factly, turning back to face the bookshelf she had been previously looking at. It had far more interesting things going on with it than watching Ondina’s smirks did. “Twins can communicate telepathically. Didn’t you know that?” she added sarcastically. If she could read Diana’s thoughts she would probably know why her sister disappeared from home. Why she hadn’t said anything at all, even to Cara. Their parents had interrogated her relentlessly for the days that followed. Even if she had known, she probably wouldn’t have told them. They didn’t need to know everything about their lives, especially now that they had graduated from school and were trying to get away from home. In her opinion, it was for the best that one of them had managed to escape.
The scoff from Ondina had to have been exaggerated; nobody actually reacted in that manner without some effort involved. Maybe she had touched a nerve, catching the redhead in a moment of tenderness. Cara somewhat doubted that, but it wasn’t impossible either. “Usually people don’t ask about others unless they care. And if they don’t care, then they don’t ask,” she shrugged again. These were pointless squabbles they were having. Obviously Ondina cared enough to ask about Diana and to continue talking. The girl liked to hear herself talk. To watch how other people reacted to her. Cara wasn’t stupid. She enjoyed a bit of that too from time to time. Except she made sure that she had all of her bases covered before making herself sound stupid. Ondina came off as a spoiled, entitled brat. Every word that came out of her mouth reeked of it.
She was planning to leave in a second anyways. All she needed was for her hand to find one of the books she had been interested in buying prior to Ondina’s interference. “Then why are you still talking to me?” Cara smiled, tilting her head to the side, fingers finding the book she had been looking at only moments earlier. “Better yet, I think I’m done here,” she stated as the book slid off of its spot on the shelf and into her hand. “See you around.” Turning quickly on her heels, Cara headed down the aisle and towards the front of the store. Ondina was surely going to follow her, she hadn’t been given the finale she probably wanted. Hopefully the girl at the cash register was quick with check outs.

IT WAS QUITE OBVIOUS THAT CARA WAS MAKING a point of dismissing Ondina by turning her back. Which was a bit of a shame because that meant she didn't catch the rather spectacular eye roll Ondina executed on her behalf. "How quaint," was all she could manage to reply. Cara really was the duller twin, Ondina decided. Though, she did think that Cara was perhaps doing this on purpose. Throwing Ondina off the scent. It wasn't really working.
Shaking her head, Ondina managed a little laugh at Cara's expense. "Oh, you really believe that!" She exclaimed, shaking her head as she made a point of looking at Cara with mild, humorous disbelief. "That's... so sweet," She drawled, as condescending as ever. Ondina rarely asked about somebody because she cared. She reached over and squeezed Cara's arm once, nodding her head in something that was supposed to look sympathetic but looked more simpering instead. "Good luck with that."
Although, even Ondina had to be impressed at how blunt Cara could be when provoked. Her brows lifted and a shot of air blew out from her nose, teeth gritted as they often where on the rare occasion her mouth was shut. She watched Cara turn to leave before she could answer, quickly slipping around the table display to sidle up beside her and loop their arms in a friendly manner.
"You want to know why I'm talking to you?" Ondina said conversationally, that same smile painted on her face. It dropped the moment she caught Cara's eyes to reveal a rather flat, expressionless look just underneath. The transition so fast if you blinked you'd miss it. "Because it's bothering you," She revealed simply, her nails pressed just slightly in to her arm, not enough to hurt but enough to keep her there as they approached the front desk. "And I like that." A rare display of complete honesty.
And then she smiled and the mask was back in place, her eyes flitting across Cara's face before she let go of her arm and reached around her back to pat her other arm in some odd, unwelcome, one armed hug. Just enough to leave an impression as she finally freed her. "Always a pleasure, Cara." She said dramatically, each syllable drawn out and overused. "Maybe I'll see you around." She shifted her gaze and smirked at where Mina was slumped behind the till, backing away as she looked back at Cara. "Tell your sister I said hello," She added, tapping two fingers to her temple with that funny little grin, a flash of incisors and pearly whites before she turned away with a flourish and left the shop alone, without buying anything.

Cara didn’t have to see the other girl’s face to know the looks she was receiving behind her back. Ondina Weasley was like an untamed horse, stomping and snorting around, making her business known when nobody wanted to know it. She could lead the unsuspecting in with sweet words and a pretty face, and then bite the unsuspecting party with a flurry of red hair. There was no pretending with Cara now, though, and the Ravenclaw could feel the condescending words oozing out of the other girl. She felt dirty as they continued piling on her as she tried to get to the checkout counter. It was one thing after another. Ignoring the first bit, it was hard to continue when she felt the bony arm loop through her own and the nails beginning to dig into her skin. Ondina was starting to be more leech-like than wild horse – annoying her for the sake of it being fun and not letting her go.
“And I don’t,” Cara responded. She was sure that was exactly what the other girl wanted to hear. Being an annoyance was working. There was no such thing as a normal conversation with the former Slytherin, and if there was by some magical chance, then Cara wanted it desperately right now. All she wanted to do was buy her damn book and leave. Tugging her arm away would only lead to a tighter grip, and from the points on Ondina’s nails, probably a few holes in her arm to boot. At least minor cuts were a spell away from being healed.
Ondina let go of her though, doing what Cara could only assume was a poor attempt at a hug. If she even knew what a hug was in the first place. Her parents probably didn’t give her enough attention growing up or something. Cara knew what that was like, but she turned out alright because she still got hugged often enough. “I will if I remember.” She wouldn’t. And even if she did, Diana wouldn’t give a crap about what Ondina had to say.
Watching the redhead leave the store, the bell above the door jingling softly, it took Cara a few seconds to take her eyes away from it. She was afraid Ondina would come bursting back in to torment her once again. The snort from the girl behind the cash register brought Cara back to the real world. “I didn’t find that funny,” she stated, slamming the book down on the counter with an audible thud. “How much?”
[The End]
