Lily and Addilyn had excused themselves to converse with other people, which Max couldn’t exactly fault them for—people kept coming into the room at a reasonably steady pace, and the momentarily quiet environment was starting to pick up its tempo.
The Slytherin walked around for a little while, just milling about and exchanging quick hellos to a few people she knew. Everyone seemed to be having a good time, which had definitely been Lily’s goal. Even though events like this had never been her scene, so to speak, Max had to admit that it wasn’t a bad time. Nobody looked to have gotten too out of control yet.
As she walked not far past the refreshments, she noticed a younger girl—probably thirteen or fourteen—dressed in ordinary clothing and spitting into a cup. Probably losing a few black feathers off of her fallen angel wings in the process, Max quickly doubled back until she was closer to where the girl was. Frankly, she looked panic-stricken. Given her having spit into her cup, Max could guess the most likely reason: Someone had already managed to spike the punch, which would make it a very long night.
“Are you alright?” Max asked her over all of the noise. The girl had her eyes shut, though Max still flipped the hem of her dress to show the prefect badge pinned to it. She knew she’d stuck it there for a reason. “I’m Maxima. I’m a prefect,” she informed her gently. “Do you want me to lead you to a corner?” she offered. It wouldn’t be too difficult to manage, she didn’t think.

Riley had a few moments to himself before someone approached him. He watched people pile in from the main door, careful to keep an eye out of people he both did and didn’t want to see. The first person who spoke to him was his roommate, someone he wasn’t best friends with, but overall, someone Riley considered harmless and didn’t mind the company of. Gilderoy made a comment about how good it was to see Riley finally out of the dorm and socializing. “They always seem to.” Riley nodded in agreement when Gilderoy spoke about how Lily’s party was bringing everyone out. “I’m not at all surprised to see you here.” Riley added with a smirk towards his overly social friend.
He found himself cut off by the high voice of his fiancee, shouting through the crowd at him as she made her way over. “Prissy.” he greeted her, swigging another, large drink from his cup as she made it all the way to him. “You found me.” he nodded, a small, somewhat forced smile on his face. He liked the girl enough; she was pretty, she was nice, however, he was still getting used to her, she required a lot more attention and effort than he was used to giving.

Nora had chosen to dress as an angel for this event, of course. Always best to keep people guessing, she thought. She did however have a headband of white devil horns that she brought as well, hidden, in case she needed to do a swamp partway through the night. For now, she was sporting blonde hair, an angelic halo and a very short, semi tight white dress. She didn't wear heels though. She never did if she could help it, and so far she hadn't really been forced to in life. She didn't believe in being uncomfortable, especially not when you were trying to have some fun. Steve had chosen 'devil', sort of, she didn't really think he committed to the costume but that was neither here nor there. Upon a rival, he left to seek his prey and she left to seek hers, that was just how they did things. They'd obviously dance together at some point, maybe check in and make sure the other was getting hydrated, blah blah blah. For now, things were just getting started and she had chosen where to start. A girl, looking very uncomfortable, who had just spit out a drink at the drink table. Perfect. Nora made her way over, reaching a hand out to attempt taking the cup from the girl, "spiked already? Good gods, they're quick," she chimed, laying on the sweet, syrupy charm in her voice. @rivquatre

Jos could feel her chest tighten, though her breathing, curiously, did not escalate. Her heart-rate stopped well before pounding in her chest. That, most of all, was confusing. Quite separate, her mind continued to race at a hundred kilometers per hour, fear clouding every thought. She slowly opened her eyes at the sound of two voices of girls that had appeared right next to her. Both were older than her, maybe 5th or 6th years, but one had a prefect badge and the other seemed to be offering to take the cup away from her. " N-n-no," she stammered, releasing the cup into the hand of the one girl in the angel costume. She did feel a little safer, thinking them good-Samaritans of one kind or another, but that didn't change the fact that she was afraid. The girl dressed as an angel confirmed Jocelyn's worry that the punch had, in-fact, been spiked, but the girl's voice was soothing and sweet to her ears. " H-I, yes, far c-corner..." Jocelyn's voice began to grow more steady. " Please... thankyou. But!" Jocelyn shook her head as a familiar pressure began to build around her eyes. She looked to both girls -the bottom of her vision beginning to blur- and quietly admitted, " I-I've never had alcohol before, and I don't know what to do." Jocelyn wrapped her arms around her midsection and pulled her shoulders in. She recalled about how alcohol had changed her father. The pressure at her eyes swelled to include her nose and throat. " Should I go d-down to the hospital wing? W-will I be s-" she sniffled, " safe going al-lone? I hate t-to take either of y-you away ffro-from... the," her lower lip had begun to quiver as she recalled how stern her brother had been when warning her about alcoholic drinks. They changed people in bad ways. She sniffled again, this time dislodging a tear from her eye and down her cheek. She couldn't disappoint her brother! She wished that he could be here... " p-party." Jos quickly wiped the tear away on her sleeve and sniffled once more. This was so embarrassing. maxima ruqayyah greyback @nora

The younger girl shook her head and said that she wasn’t alright, just around the time that another girl whom Max vaguely recognized swooped in and took the cup, commenting something about how whoever had spiked the drink had been quick to do so. Max knew that she probably should have had a word with the second girl, but she would have to let her off the hook; she had helped to diffuse the situation, even though Max was willing to bet money that the girl who had taken the cup had done so because she was willing to drink it.
As for the younger girl, Max could see how repentant she was, to the point that the younger girl was actually crying. “You’ll be fine,” Maxima assured her, glad to hear that the younger girl had consented to her pulling her over to the corner.
Before she could lead the girl away from the crowd, though, the younger girl spoke up again. “I-I've never had alcohol before, and I don't know what to do,” she said.
The girl couldn’t have had that much to drink already, so Max felt confident that her previous statement still stood. “It just tastes a bit… dodgy,” Max commented, looking to the other girl in their company. It was a taste that Max herself had yet to acquire.
Still crying (and even harder than before), the younger girl asked if she needed to go to the Hospital Wing and if she would be safe to go there alone because she didn’t want to detract from the party.
“You’re not in any trouble,” Maxima reassured the crying girl again, using the same tone of voice as she did when being motherly towards her younger siblings. “You didn’t know.” She probably hadn’t smelled anything in it before getting herself a cup.
“I can walk with you to the Hospital Wing if it would make you feel better, but you should be fine with a bit of time and maybe some food,” Max informed her. “How much have you had to drink?” she asked the younger girl, trying to gauge if she would be likely to get sick before long.
@rivquatre @nora OOC: If Jocelyn does want to leave, I can start a thread for Max to take her, if you’d like, River.

Riley agreed with him about Lily’s party bringing everyone out. Most parties were good for that and Lily did have the experience to throw a party with how many she had thrown in the past. Riley also commented about how it he wasn’t surprised to see him here and Gilderoy just laughed for a moment. “Well of course I’d be here. It isn’t a party without Gilderoy. It would just be a get together at the least.” He joked for a moment even if he knew he did make anything better that he went to.
Their conversation was interrupted by the higher pitched voice of a girl calling Riley’s name. He was used to girls squealing his name but the name of someone else was a different experience. The girl soon appeared from the crowd and it looked like she had been looking for Riley for some time. “Look at Mr. popularity here, so who is this pretty lady?” He could only assume a friend of Riley’s but based on the squeal from her before he was expecting more than just that.

“Prissy,” Riley greeted her mid-drink. “You found me.”
“I looked everywhere for you,” Priscilla smiled, peering over to her fiancé’s cup and wondering if she should get herself something to drink. “I’m sorry I’m so late,” she added. “I couldn’t decide what to wear…” She gave a small pout and tried to ensure that her wings wouldn’t accidentally hit Riley or Gilderoy in the head.
Gilderoy, who had called Riley “Mr. Popularity”, asked who the “pretty lady” was. It would have been flattering, thought Priscilla, if she weren’t betrothed to Riley. Maybe Riley hadn’t announced it from the top of the Astronomy Tower, but weren’t he and Gilderoy dormmates?
“Priscilla Rosier,” she introduced herself, looking to Riley and readjusting her stance before holding her right hand out to Gilderoy for a proper handshake.

IT didn't matter that Jimmie barely knew Lily Potter, there was still a certain level of satisfaction to be had at having her botched costume recognised. Especially by someone that, for lack of a better word, was considered 'popular'. She shook her shoulders theatrically, drink wobbling in hand as she preened slightly. "Yeah!" She exclaimed over the music, a wide grin on her face. "I'm so relieved at least one person gets it," She laughed, lifting the drink to her lips then. It burned all the way down, followed by a sticky sweetness that almost made Jimmie's eyes water. She'd always been more of a savoury kind of girl. Blinking the water from her eyes, she stuck her tongue out briefly, but even Lily seemed slightly confused and maybe impressed? "Uh-huh," She snorted, looking in to the depths of her drink and wondering why her mind was telling her to take another drink. "Wouldn't be a Hogwarts Bash without it, right?" The cup was almost back to her lips when Lily asked her name. Her brows quirked briefly, pride mildly stung, but she kept her cool as she pulled the cup away. "Jimmie!" She said enthusiastically, raising her voice slightly to be heard over the din. "Jimmie Blishwick?" She held one hand out awkwardly, her little stuffed figurines wobbling precariously on her shoulders. The strap of the outstretched arm sagging slightly so her angel looked like it was making a break for it. - lily luna potter

AMONG the crowds of students and their costumes, it was Brigh's hair that stood out for Eli. He approached the back of it with caution, calling out to her in hopes and sighing in relief when her familiar face turned to look at him. He twirled the glowing white stick at Brigh when asked, his grin a little ghostly from the light emanating from his own. "It's your halo..?" He said cheekily, holding it out to her. "Wrist, or neck?" He asked, brows lifted. She could say no, of course. He'd just double up on his own. He flicked his own for effect, "Thanks." It wobbled on his neck, but his wings weren't visible yet which was probably for the best. They were pretty pitiful. "You look pretty," He said conversationally, nodding to the flattering white dress she wore. It made her hair look like it was on fire. Offering the crook of his arm to Brigh, Eli almost missed the phial she was holding. Almost. He plucked it from her grip without question, a smirk on his face as he took a blatant swig. It burned all the way down. Not like firewhiskey, he thought. Maybe a little smokier. As if the fire had been put out to embers in his throat. He handed it back and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. "What is it?" He asked, as if consuming an unknown liquid wasn't absolutely barbaric. But, it wasn't out of character either. - BRÍGH ENNIS O'DALAIGH

Kinsey had done so much reading over the past two months. She'd studied and studied about empaths and tried to figure out how they didn't get overwhelmed by their abilities and now she was in the practical stage of her research. She was trying to find ways to be in crowds of people and associate with others like a normal person. She wanted to have friends and to be able to be close to people without them being able to find out her secret. She wanted ... to not feel alone anymore.
The Halloween Dance seemed like a good place for more practical experience, a good time to enter a crowd of people that hopefully wouldn't have terrible intentions. This wasn't the first time she was trying to go out in public. She volunteered in one of the rooms for the Halloween Activity the night before and she'd been working on going to the Great Hall to eat during busy meal times. It was hard and she found herself getting overwhelmed earlier than she wanted and having to leave the room before mealtime was over, but she was making progress. So she decided to come to Lily's party for the first time. She was 17, for goodness' sake! She should be able to go to a party without freaking out.
Kinsey walked into the Room of Requirement a bit late, not wanting to draw a lot of attention to herself. She hadn't dressed up, deciding that she'd rather blend into the shadows a bit more than wear something read or white. Besides, she didn't really expect anyone to notice her. The intentions in the room were fairly positive, from what she could feel at least, and Kinsey felt her spirits rising, despite the fact that so many people were here. Maybe she could do this! She walked to the refreshment table, taking some snacks as she glanced around the room, smiling. No wonder people liked things like this. Lots of people were dancing and chatting and it seemed like a lot of fun. If only she had someone to come with ...
Almost as if her mind were trying to torture her, she spotted Riley right as that thought occurred to her. An involuntary smile lifted the corners of her mouth as she looked at him, even as her heart ached. She missed him. Missed spending her time with him, having someone who understood her nearby. Sure, he was still there, but Kinsey couldn't talk with him. Last night had been the exception, when they'd been assigned to work together. Now he was talking to Gilderoy, which shouldn't be a surprise. They were dorm mates. If she were braver ... no, she'd never just walk up to them.
Then she noticed the girl hanging onto Riley's arm and her spirits fell, along with her expression. No, Kinsey definitely should have known better than to come here. Of course he'd be with his fiance. She should have expected the girl to be somewhere nearby when she saw him, but she hadn't even thought of it. Now, her only thought was escape. She didn't want to watch Riley dance with the girl or smile at her, or even talk to her. Kinsey started rushing toward the door, trying to be discreet and quiet and make it so no one noticed her. The last thing she wanted was to be stopped by some well-meaning person.

@katie 10.31.2024 Steve wasn’t sure if the girl took a while to respond because she wasn’t interested at first, or if she was averse to shaking hands. Being so forward, that occasionally happened, though only with the people he caught off guard. This was a party though! People were supposed to be talking and mingling, and showing up to one and expecting to hide off to the side or in a corner wasn’t allowed in his books. Looking like a lost lamb wouldn’t do at all. But, she shook his hand nonetheless, and answered his question to boot. He cracked a smile when she said she was a real devil. That was perfect. That was his kind of girl. With the nature of the party, Steve had assumed there would be a number of fakes on both sides, Nora included. Now she could put on the angel act perfectly, probably only to scare the living daylights out of new company later on in the night. “Really? New York is pretty nice this time of year. Basically anything in the north is. Definitely missing it right about now…” Steve let out an exaggerated sigh, briefly glancing away from the girl before looking back down at her.
She then asked if he was a real or fake, and Steve shrugged. “Now that is a good question,” he said, scratching gently at the side of his face as he thought about it. There were so many possibilities here. Technically his vampire blood made him a ‘devil’ in the literary sense. Or if she asked any of his ex-girlfriends. They always said the funniest things about him, most true but to be taken with a grain of salt. “I guess I’m whatever you want me to be,” he raised an eyebrow at her. “I like to think that I can play both sides of that, depending on the person and whether I’m using my charm or not. Compared to my sister I’m tame.” Speaking of Nora, he still hadn’t seen her yet. It wouldn’t be fun if he didn’t see who she was latched onto, assuming she was at the party already. Knowing her, she could have gotten distracted while on the way. “What house are you in New York? I don’t think I’ve seen you around yet.”

Oh thank, Merlin... Jos didn't want there to be trouble. Still, this was so terribly embarrassing for only being here a week or two. She nodded uneasily and dried her eyes with her sleeve. It was becoming easier to breathe more slowly. Maxima offered to take her down to the Hospital Wing, though Jos didn't quite catch what she said after that. Her ability to focus was getting a bit fuzzy. Maxima then asked how much Jos had had to drink. Jocelyn replied, " Please, yes, that would help a, lot..." Her words sounded like they were coming out slower than before. That was strange, but not as concerning as some distant part of her would have thought. " It was a whole.. cup-an'-a'..half.. all'a.." Jocelyn suddenly coughed sharply and she felt like she had forgotten something. Jocelyn looked back up at Maxima and the other girl who was nearby and asked slowly, " Why did I, come here? This was, a, dumb, idea..." Her stomach growled and began to feel queasy. She wrapped her arms around her stomach and began to carefully make for the door. maxima ruqayyah greyback@nora (ooc: In favor of moving time along, maybe a thread of Jos running into either Max or Nora a few [days?] after the party could be fun?)

Brígh plucked the glowing... thing from Eli's hands and placed it on her head. It didn't fit properly at all, and was bound to fall off within three seconds, but she could at least pretend for now. "A halo for an angel," she said, trying to smile angelically but it ended up looking like she was in pain. "Thank you. You look very handsome yourself," said Bri, her face relaxing into an easy smile. "Thanks for inviting me, by the way. Been feeling a bit... not myself lately. So this will be fun," she said.
Bri offered Eli the phial and he took it and drank it. She took the crook of his arm as they entered the party. "Shouldn't you be asking that before you drink?" asked Bri curiously, pocketing the vial. "Jameson, what else?" She looked around and swore. "Ah... I've just seen a guy I hooked up with over the summer. I mean, he's in Gryffindor but I have done well avoiding him thoroughly. So awkward. Let's go over here," said Bri, dragging Eli to the opposite end of the room from Steve. The festival was a bit of a haze, but she remembered him clearly. "Never snog people you meet at festivals, Eli. It never turns out good," said Bri, feeling the rather unnecessary need to explain herself. Perhaps it was the Jameson.

ELI wasn't the most observant person in the world, but he thought Brigh was a little more subdued than usual. She was so full of spirit whenever they were together, that when there was a marked lack of it, well it was hard not to notice. He straightened the halo on her head without comment, a slight crease between his brows. He didn't like to think about his friends in pain. So, whatever was bothering Brigh was quick to bother Eli. He filed it away for further thought. Addressing more pressing matterS. Like booze. With it nipping the back of his throat, Eli shrugged heartily. "I trust you won't poison me?" He answered, raising his brows as he looked down at her. They entered the hub hub of the party, noise encapsulating them immediately. "Jameson..." He echoed, he hadn't heard of that. It sounded positively no-maj, and he was sure it was. "It's not bad," He said with a pouting of his bottom lip. Definitely a little easier on the stomach than Firewhiskey. His eyes roved around the room, and Eli's throat bobbed as he thought he saw a familiar head of blonde hair among the throng of party-goers. He ducked his head immediately, yelping slightly when he was suddenly yanked on a different path. "Wh-" Eli began with surprise, a frown on his face as Brigh filled in the blanks. "No way!" He said with a laugh, craning his head to see if he could find the faceless hook up. "Which one..?." He said from the corner of his mouth, something wickedly curious on his face. He allowed them room to move and grabbed her hand as if to dance. "Pretend your enjoying yourself," He said with a smirk. "If he notices you, you're with an... amazingly good-looking new guy." Eli lifted his chin proudly, though there was jest in the creases of his cheeks. "And worse yet, you haven't looked at him once." Jealousy was a common emotion among many. " Is he the reason you're a little... offkey tonight?" He asked eventually, unable to stop himself as he frowned down at her carefully. - BRÍGH ENNIS O'DALAIGH - mentions @ashley , because why not?

Ashley agreed to dance with him but then asked what kind of dance he was thinking about. He smirked, “you really like to plan things out, don’t you?” he asked in jest. He lead her onto the dancefloor. “Whatever comes naturally with the music.” he insisted. There was no need to explain exactly what kind of dance they needed to do, he just wanted to dance with her. She was a singer, so she was good with music and obviously had rhythm, he just wanted to see her loosen up a bit and see where the music took her. “No one’s going to judge you.” he promised with a wink.
