Summer 2024; Knockturn Alley There wasn’t much of a need to be careful around Knockturn Alley. Priscilla Rosier knew it like the back of her hand, and nowhere was it more apparent who did and didn’t know what they were doing. It was always amusing on the occasions when some unsuspecting soul would wander in, only to realize that they had made a misstep and panic. Priscilla was so accustomed to the things that could be found there that nothing was truly shocking. Everything, as her father had once explained to her when she was much younger, had its purpose for someone.
She walked casually through the twists and turns of the dark alleyway, stopping to admire a selection of substances being sold by a street vendor. The wizard had a number of curious vials, including ones labeled as “Acromantula venom”, “boomslang venom”, and “unicorn blood”.
“Unicorn blood?” Priscilla mused, looking curiously at the vial before picking it up and swirling its contents. Unicorn blood it certainly wasn’t; the Ravenclaw’s best guess was that the seller was trying to pass off an unfinished Girding Potion as something it wasn’t. “Are you sure about that?” she questioned him, a polite smile upon her face. “This would be worth a fortune, you know,” she spoke as she set the vial back down, “if it were real.”

KNOCKTURN ALLEY WAS DIRTY AND DANK AND nobody ever expected to see Ondina there. But, even she could brave the foul smell that seemed to permeate the air, especially when it came to acquiring... rare items. But, even she knew that going to a place like that meant taking the risk of being double crossed. Particularly, when it came to looking for 'cures'. Of which Ondina was intimately familiar with.
"He's a well known fraud," Ondina drawled boldly as she stopped by a market stall where a figure was questioning the integrity of a vial of rubbish. She eyed the vendor behind it with sheer disgust. Her face partially shrouded by a red hood she kept up. "Last I heard he was punting liquid mercury as Unicorn Blood." She flicked over his latest concoction and was awarded with a great howling disapproval.
"What is it this time, hm?" She picked up a similar bottle to the girl's, shaking the liquid inside and watching it wobble plainly. "This might be your worst one yet," She tutted, before dropping it back on the display, rubbing two of her fingers together as if to remove some dust or dirt from the tips that had held it.

Good old Knockturn Alley, the greatest escape ever. Mina never actually bought anything from the shops there, preferring to window-shop and chit-chat with the owners. She wasn’t sure if they knew who her parents or older siblings were, or if they felt bad for her and thought she was simple or something. Simple she was not, and there were plenty of complexities that accompanied the functioning alcoholic. Especially since she barely made minimum wage. But Mina wouldn’t have it any other way, and the fact that her family felt the need to try and ‘fix’ her was all she wanted. It was the attention that she had wanted for years; what she had desperately needed in school. Even though Cal was the middle child, Mina certainly felt like she was the true one. She was severely lacking in the brains department, was missing the bite of a werewolf, and was let down immensely when her younger sister was born, immediately stripping her of all the attention that the baby in the family always got. That was why she acted out. That was also why she was in Knockturn today, avoiding responsibility like usual. She had work off, and decided that Callisto could deal with her dog for the rest of the day. The fuzzball enjoyed days like today, Mina could always tell when she got home.
Back to Knockturn Alley though. It was hopping today! Street vendors were all over, selling their sketchy stuff like usual. She liked calling it stuff, because that was exactly what it was. Stuff. Stuff consisted of the things that people wanted, but probably didn’t need. In this case, the street vendors’ stuff were knock-off magical items, hastily or poorly made, or mysterious vials of potions. Her personal favorites were the love potion ones. Literally anyone could buy the ingredients and brew their own love potion. Merlin, she could even do that! Nonetheless, apparently people liked the idea of purchasing an off-colour love potion from Nelson, the scraggly-bearded Squib, or any of his colleagues. Today, one of those stands was drawing a lot of attention, with what looked like two onlookers. Mina’s interest was piqued.
She made her way down the alley and stopped directly behind the two girls, immediately recognizing the redheaded one. Little Ondina Weasley. Mina hated her when she was in still in school. Always drawing attention away from her own antics. “Might be an attitude adjustment potion, Dina,” Mina piped up, winking at the stand owner, who seemed to be furious at the response to his cheap potions. “How’ve you been? Was being Drama Queen of Slytherin as fun as it sounds?”

No sooner had Priscilla pointed out the obvious—that the vendor’s “unicorn blood” was just an attempt to scam people out of a few Galleons—than she heard someone else approach. “He's a well known fraud,” said the voice, right as Priscilla turned to see that it was Ondina Weasley beneath the hood. ”Last I heard,” she added while they were still very much in the presence of the vendor, “he was punting liquid mercury as unicorn blood.” Priscilla nearly asked herself what kind of a fool would be enough of an idiot to purchase such a thing, but, then again, the vendor wouldn’t have concocted the scheme if he didn’t think he could get something out of it.
“What is it this time, hm?” Ondina asked him, inspecting what it was he was selling. She picked up another bottle—also supposedly containing unicorn blood—and seemed none too impressed by it. “This might be your worst one yet,” she remarked.
Priscilla was intrigued, if only to see who in Knockturn Alley would be duped into purchasing such a fraudulent product. She thought that perhaps that would be the case when she heard footsteps coming from behind where she and Ondina were standing, but no such luck. Instead, someone addressed Ondina.
“Might be an attitude adjustment potion, Dina,” said the other witch. “How’ve you been? Was being Drama Queen of Slytherin as fun as it sounds?” It wasn’t one of Ondina’s family members who had raised the question, as Priscilla reasonably would have expected when she glanced over her shoulder; it was a younger woman—though older than she was and probably closer to Ondina’s age. Priscilla didn’t recognize her by name, although she was sure that she had seen her around before.
Cautiously, Priscilla shot a look towards Ondina as she toyed with some of the other bottles on display. She knew that the Weasley girl was actually quite capable of handling her own, but it was a surprise to hear anyone being so brash. Usually, those in Knockturn Alley were a little more subtle.

OF COURSE, IT WAS KNOCKTURN ALLEY, SO Ondina could not hope to be pest free for long. There was something about the dampness of the place that drew in the dregs, especially when chatter began. Turning her head slightly, she caught the familiar straight face of Mina Oliveira. She wasn't a totally intolerable girl, but Ondina had never had much time for her theatrics. Proven further still as she voiced that awful, slanderous nickname.
"Oh, then here you go," She tossed it carelessly at Mina's chest, uncaring of whether or not she caught it. If she didn't, well it'd be a mess splattered on her ugly shoes, if she did then it simply helped Ondina's point all the more. She did not address the nickname. "You bet!" Ondina declared enthusiastically, that sickeningly grin on her face. "Nobody even remembered you when I was finished."
Shrugging her shoulders, she shot a smirk at the little dark-haired girl who had started all of this before looking back at Mina, almost reluctant, as if there wasn't much to look at. "How's mediocrity treating you?" She hitched her cheeks and reached over to absently flick another of the vendors glass phials over, just because she could. "Still trying to get out from under your sister's shadow?"

It was easy to forget that there were other people present when Ondina was making a show of things. The girl had tossed one of the vials Mina’s way, and it took her longer than it should have to catch it. Luckily her hand eye coordination was fairly decent with all those games of fetch over the last year. “I think this would make people expect too much from me. We don’t want that happening, do we?” Mina laughed, pulling her coin purse out of her jacket pocket. “Two sickles right? This is a graduation present for my dear friend Dina here.” An ugly smirk crossed her face as she forked the money over and pushed the vial uncomfortably close to Ondina. There was a good chance it was going to end up on the ground in a minute or two. A few years ago, those sickles would have served well as beer money. Now she had enough to waste it as she pleased. Nobody had ever expected that of her.
“Aww that’s too bad,” she pouted. “It suites me well. Can you believe that? There were bets going in my family that I’d be dead by now, so I’m living the life.” She purposely ignored the comment about Callisto, deciding that wasn’t a battle she wanted to get in. While she hated what her older sister had to say about her lifestyle, Mina had never actually been in her shadow. That would have been asking too much of her to do so and would be looking down on Cal’s own achievements. “Who’s your little friend here?” Mina asked, turning to the younger girl. Ondina was preying on the real young ones these days, apparently. Even she wouldn’t stoop that low anymore. “Nice to meet you, I’m Mina,” she said, holding her hand out for the girl to shake. Ondina would hate the attention being taken away from her.

The other girl's exchange with Ondina was entertaining, though Priscilla left them to it as they traded insults. Ondina tossed one of the bogus vials in the brunette's direction, and—to Priscilla's surprise—it didn't fall to the ground. The other girl actually managed to catch it and proceeded to purchase it. It was a gift for Ondina, she claimed, though her interactions with Ondina had suggested anything but. The brunette was clever, Priscilla thought (but certainly wouldn't have voiced aloud).
The brunette shoved the vial of whatever it actually was in Ondina's direction. She had some gall or was perfectly stupid, and she was a little bit… Priscilla wasn't sure how she was supposed to take the comment that the girl's family had assumed she'd be dead by that point, but…
Eventually, it dawned on the brunette that there was still someone else in their presence besides the peddler. Given the nature of the Purifiers (and the ages of her siblings, on top of that), it wasn't uncommon for her to find herself as the youngest person in a conversation. It never failed to amuse her when people treated her as though she was significantly younger than she really was, and the brunette's manner of speaking was no different from what Priscilla had heard her whole life.
"Who’s your little friend here?" the other girl asked, seemingly asking Ondina as though she wasn't capable of answering for herself. She did, then, extend her hand for a handshake. "Nice to meet you," she said. "I’m Mina."
"Priscilla Rosier," Priscilla answered, giving her name confidently as she shook Mina's hand. Knockturn Alley was her territory, and it wasn't of any concern to her that she was still underage. "Any friend of Ondina's is a friend of mine," she added, smiling. Rather than throwing around vials, she was content to remain perfectly ladylike.
"If you're looking for something special," she offered, "I know of a few places." There were plenty of options around, and all were of much better quality than some stall. "Probably within your budget, too."

MINA HAD ALWAYS BEEN STUPIDLY FEARLESS IN Ondina's opinion. It was probably an Oliveira trait and Ondina couldn't wait for it to finally blow up in the girl's face. Which it would, it had already happened to her sister, and Mina was about as reckless as far as Ondina could tell. Even as she parried her attack with an impressive counter, the vial sliding across the table in her direction. She didn't hesitate to pick it up, her head tilting as she flashed a sharp smile in her direction, the ugly nickname like a raspberry blown in her face.
"Oh, you really didn't have to, Mimi." Ondina simpered, as if she really meant it. "Seeing as I know how difficult you find keeping a job..." She sighed, tutting quietly, her mouth softening as if in sympathy. She rolled the little vial between her fingers, huffing a forced laugh as Mina gave herself undue congratulations. "There's still time..." She sang cheerfully, lifting her free hand to cross her fingers and shake them hopefully.
And then the conversation shifted, Ondina suddenly reminded that they were not alone. The Rosier girl held her own, with a demeanour only money could buy. Ondina nodded her head once, despite the fact that she and Mina were anything but friends. While the attention strayed from her, Ondina made a show of dropping the vial on the ground between them, lifting her foot and stomping heavily on the vial so that it shattered under her heel.
"Show us what you got," said Ondina, quirking her brows once at Mina as she made a show of stepping around her, leaving a very large berth between them, and stopped at the young girls side. "I hear the Rosier's are very familiar with Knockturn Alley...?" It was not so much an insult, but could very much be construed as such. Seeing as Knockturn Alley was useful, but disgusting as far as Ondina was concerned.

She fucking hated being called Mimi, which she assumed was about as much as Ondina hated being called Dina. At least dropping the first two letters of the redhead’s name made her sound less like the pretentious bitch she actually was. That was the least Mina could do for her. Mimi sounded like a sick infant being coddled by their mother. She could see Ondina’s fangs spewing their invisible venom everywhere, each word weighing thousands of times more whenever she retorted. “Please don’t confuse me with my stripper of a sister, or Sarah with me. I’ve only had the job at Flourish and Blotts,” Mina attempted to clear up. She disliked being thought of as the type that bounced between jobs. Her adventures abroad had apparently made some think that she was a serial job searcher, which she most certainly was not. “Death by papercuts is most likely these days,” she offered up to Ondina’s comment. Or boredom. But she could supplement that with reading, another skill people seemed to think she lacked. She couldn’t hold that against them though because she used to hate reading.
“I’m so proud of you for finally finding a friend, Dina. You know that? I was worried you would have trouble once I left school…” The little girl, Priscilla, was either ignorant of the fact that her Weasley companion was absolutely awful, or was equally as terrible and putting on airs for the sake of playing nice. Or she was stupid. With a name like Rosier though, Mina doubted that. Even she had heard of that surname. “Oh I think that fits Dina perfectly. Don’t you think?” she asked turning back to the redhead, completely ignoring the challenge she had posed. A vial full of falsehood and unpredictability. No, that was one-hundred percent the right gift for Ondina Weasley.

Ondina and Mina continued to trade jabs back and forth. Ondina called Mina "Mimi" and talked about the other young woman's inability to hold a job, to which Mina responded that she felt that Ondina was confusing her with her stripper sister. It was good knowledge for gossip later, Priscilla noted, and she would probably be staying clear of Flourish and Blotts for the time being.
"Death by papercuts is most likely these days." Priscilla listened as Mina responded to Ondina and tried not to laugh. This probably wasn't the right part of magical Britain for that, considering that nearly every one of Knockturn Alley's shops was filled with inventory that was either deceased or capable of causing death in some way—usually by less than pleasant means.
As Mina introduced herself, Priscilla realized that the vial that had been the start of their conversation was still in Ondina's possession, and, without haste, she shattered it with her foot. Mina either didn't notice or didn't give a damn—probably the latter, based on what Priscilla had seen of her so far—and sweetly praised Ondina for having found a friend.
"Show us what you got," Ondina remarked of Priscilla's own comment about finding a better place to shop. "I hear the Rosiers are very familiar with Knockturn Alley."
The last part was something that Priscilla took as more of a threat to Mina than anything against her family. The Rosiers were respectable in the sense that they were moneyed. Where some of that money actually went, even Priscilla couldn't say with certainty, though. Going into Knockturn Alley, in spite of the fact that it was far from opulent, was also a very good way of losing those who thought themselves too "good" for the place. Honestly, they didn't know what they were missing.
Mina, on the other hand, had felt that her gift to Ondina fit her perfectly. Priscilla would have called Mina a coward under her breath if it wouldn't have been so obvious.
"Personally," she chimed in, "I think it's only right that Ondina should buy something for you, too, Mimi." She looked between the older girls and smiled. "Returning the favor and all of that, especially among friends."

THE ODD THING WAS THAT IF MINA WAS someone Ondina respected, she might actually admire the fierceness she always maintained. But, she wasn't and Ondina didn't trust people who drank more than they spoke. Also, they'd been bitter adversaries in school and that was just a hurdle she had absolutely no intention of jumping. Plus, it was more fun this way.
"Easy mistake to make," Ondina tutted, giving Mina a cursory glance from head-to-toe and finding her very much lacking. Florish & Blotts wasn't a bad bookstore, but she'd always thought hiring Mina was the worst thing they'd ever done. "Or booze, eh?" She quipped cheerily, tongue in cheek as she looked at Mina's pale face. She was probably anaemic or something, thought Ondina. Who often thought of health and taking care of herself. That's why she always looked for illness in others. She was projecting.
The little Rosier girl was a little quiet, but she was obviously enjoying the little tirade, because she hadn't left. Anybody else would have let them dissolve in to a cat fight alone. "I'm very friendly," Ondina said, flashing her teeth at Mina in a decidedly unfriendly fashion. "There was a lot of cleaning up to do after you left." This was a bit of an exaggeration, but that was Ondina's entire shtick. "Your reputation left a bit of a stink." But then she turned and realised that Priscella had spoken again.
"You're right-" She went to say the girls name before realising she couldn't remember. Rosier was what had stuck with her mostly, so she sniffed and didn't try say it at all. It could come to her eventually. "Here," Ondina began rifling around in her pockets, retrieving a few silver sickles and a handful of knuts. She looked at the handful before upturning it at Mina's feet. "Buy yourself something." She winked at Mina, "Probably a bottle, huh?" And then she turned back to the Rosier girl and smiled. "I'm going now." She pointed at the vendor and clicked her fingers. "You should report that vendor."

Of course it was easy to mistake Mina and Sarah. Aside from the violent tendencies and the toddler that her older sister sported, they walked the same very thin, fine line of self-destruction. Thankfully Mina lacked werewolf part and could laugh off jokes at her own expense. Yes, she did tend to drink her feelings away, but she liked doing that and it hadn’t hampered her life style yet. “Sounds like a challenge,” she grinned at the prospect of dying via alcohol poisoning. That was the most likely scenario currently and probably one her sister and parents worried about the most. If that ended up being her fate though, she would accept it. At least she would be going down in a way that was enjoyable. Ondina would probably choke on her own tongue or something equally painful. Her grin stayed plastered on her face as Ondina attempted to stamp out everything she had just said, going after her character one again. The redhead only knew how to make baseless threats and fabrications, which was one of the reasons Mina never felt threatened by her. All bark and no bite, and she had family members that could do both. Nobody ever understood what it was like to grow up in a household with four werewolves. Fun; that was what it was. “Whoops. Guess I went overboard whoring myself out seventh year. Should have known better,” she shrugged. Self-deprecation was her default now, since Ondina was only going to escalate everything the longer the conversation went on. The little girl said something about Ondina repaying Mina for the gift, miraculously finding a pause in the snippiness to make herself heard. It didn’t take long for the redhead to act on those words, and Mina suddenly had a handful of sickles in her hands. “You know what?” she said as she counted through the sickles, “This might mean I get my Wolfsbane potion this month. Thank you!” A small lie to illicit a reaction from the Rosier girl more than Ondina. She knew the older girl would have something to say about her being a fleabag or smelling like a dog. But that was it, and it didn’t take long for Ondina to turn on her heels and head off in the opposite direction, leaving Mina to pocket the money and flash her teeth at the Rosier girl. “ Nice meeting you!” she said cheerfully as she went in the opposite direction of Ondina, immediately deciding that it was time to go home and call it a day. Just when Priscilla thought that Ondina and Mina had lost their creativity for comebacks, one or the other of them would find something more to say to add fuel to the fire. In the past few minutes alone, Priscilla had learned more about Mina than she had ever cared to, considering that she had been a complete stranger to her only a short time earlier. Mina was certainly not someone with whom she cared to spend time; she had established that: Potentially alcoholic, possibly a werewolf… Those were almost scare tactics for the Ravenclaw, but not quite.
Mina bid them farewell, telling her that it was nice to meet her. Priscilla echoed the same sentiment through gritted teeth as she watched Mina leave.
Ondina, too, said that she would be leaving, and Priscilla treated their parting much more politely, especially as the young woman reminded her to report the vendor that had inadvertently begun the whole thing.
"Oh," Priscilla nodded to Ondina, "I will." It wouldn't take much effort on her part, which she appreciated. She would let her parents know, and they would certainly take care of it. Well, they wouldn't do it themselves; they were too proud for that, but they knew people. And, where she was concerned, that was practically the same thing.
