”Ma’am, it’s unlikely he will improve without the surgery.” Were the repeated words Dana Knox heard when she arrived at the muggle hospital a few months back, a dull, ordinary hospital where her younger brother Noah resided for his injuries and his coma.
But, this story came with a heavy background.
Shortly after Dana’s birthday, things began to crumble within her household. Her parents finalised their divorce, causing a split, with Dana and the twins visiting their father almost every weekend. During one weekend trip home, Dana’s father and twin siblings were found in the ruins of a car crash; something strange and unpredictable. When the news broke out that Dana’s father and sister had died while her brother survived; the eldest Knox girl felt her world snap into two. Even while their family wasn’t the best, she still loved them all dearly.
With Noah in critical care, Dana left Hogwarts immediately, in need of an escape, to mourn, to be there for support. And as the Winter season passed, she never left Noah’s side. The Knox girl refused to go home except for a change of clothes, thus “rooming” with her brother. Yet it seemed strange for a young wizard like him to remain in the coma. Throughout the time she spent with him; the eldest Knox girl watched as her brother slipped in and out of consciousness, his pale fingers twitching sometime during mornings, or parts of his body vigorously shaking.
All signs gave her a whirl of emotions. Maybe he’ll actually wake up? So she thought. But the day never arrived. Between six months and just shy of a year, Dana heard the same words every day within the hospital. “Ma’am, he won’t improve.”, ”Maybe you should consider removing him from life support…”.
Till the present-day Dana wondered why she wasted her and Noah’s time with muggles. Then again, being a half-blood gave her an advantage. She could use magic to restore her brother’s health. Well, a healer could. And so, with a plan to escape in mind; Dana brought her younger brother to St Mungos, a hospital where her mother actually worked, shortly before she returned to Hogwarts.
For months, Dana returned to St Mungos – in and out of the school term, seeing how Noah’s condition had improved but still saw no sign of the younger Knox waking up. Clouds of thoughts swarmed Dana’s mind as she would visit him. Shouldn’t magic have awoken him by now?, Perhaps he’s dead? – thoughts that reminded her of pests. It was at this same time Dana met Callisto Adriana Oliveira: a fresh healer who Dana seemed rather fond of. The two bonded during Dana’s trips to see her brother, as the latter always gave Dana something else to focus on rather than the negatives of her brother’s health.
In the present day, that this very day was: Dana found herself at St Mungos once more. With the air turning rather humid; she thanked for advanced wizardry that kept the hospital rather cool, allowing the Knox girl to dress down a little. Standing tall in a tank top and shorts with simple shoes on, the blond walked through the hospital hallway, her thin jacket wrapped in arm, as she approached her brother’s room. A place she knew like the back of her hand.
Waving her wand to open the door, she watched as it slid slowly open, revealing her lifeless-like brother as he slept upon his bed. She sighed with a small frown, pushing some of his brown locks to the side of his face, her hand rather warm against his cold skin. Ever since leaving the muggle hospital; Noah had improved. He looked more alive while looking lifeless, and he slipped in and out of consciousness more often. Or so Callisto says.
The thought of her brother waking up eventually brought a smile to her face. He must have missed his friends so much. Or his life overall. | 659 words >> ooc notes: gah this was hard xP sorry it took forever |

The case of Noah Woods-Knox intrigued Callisto. Not only because he was in a coma, which was always a fascinating medical condition, but because magic wasn't able to bring him out of it and that was just strange. Things that plagued muggles didn't often plague magical beings because their healing abilities were so much more advanced. Part of Callisto thought that if he was put into her care immediately after his accident then she would have been able to prevent this coma. She didn't understand why any family with magical ties would go to a muggle Hospital first instead of bringing them straight here, but it wasn't her place to judge. All she could do now is deal with the situation as it was.
She did have an idea, something a little... controversial. She would have to get his family's permission, and knew it would take some time for them to process the idea. She was an intellectual first and foremost, so she didn't really think that hard about how some of her healing methods looked on an emotional level. She liked Dana though, and felt the sister would be the best person to talk to.
Once the girl arrived, Callisto gave her a moment alone with her brother before entering the room, knocking softly on the door before stepping inside. "Dana, it's good to see you," she greeted with a nod.

After the Knox girl slightly brushed her brother’s brown locks to the sides, Dana’s hand rested upon her brothers lifeless-like one, a small smile on her face as she listened to the beeps of his heart beep. There always seemed to be an increase in the pitch like sound whenever Dana came into contact with her brother; warming the eldest Knox girl’s heart always.
She remembered when Noah was first transferred here and how frightened she was for her younger brother to settle into a new place without even being aware of it. Yet the thought of the muggle hospital he once resided her still confused her till this day. Why did she truly even bother with humans? They’d never understand. As the blonde’s thumb swept over the knuckles of her pale brother’s hand, her blue eyes gazed upon the monitor, watching his heart rate incline every so often.
Yet the faint sound of the door being knocked upon before it was shifted open caught the Knox girl’s attention; causing her to lift her hand from her brother’s side, the usual beeps she heard becoming rather distant and faint. Greeting her fellow friend and healer Callisto, she nodded back. ”It’s been a while hasn’t it?” Dana questioned. Though she would visit Noah quite often, Dana had only met Callisto recently, discovering that she was the lead Healer for Noah’s case.
”How have you been?” She asked in a slight whisper, while she gently pushed herself from Noah’s bed, her hands smoothing down her jean area a little before Dana’s arms moved to her back, standing rather awkwardly. | notes: hopefully this is okay! |

Callisto nodded once in agreement when Dana mentioned it had been a while. She asked how Cal had been, her voice quiet even though it didn't need to be. Callisto didn't speak loudly in the first place, but she was generally up front and made sure she could be heard - whether they were in the room with a patient or not. "I've been fine, working hard," in all reality she hadn't actually been that fine, but that wasn't something that Dana needed to know. She was a professional, and as much as her and Dana could be friends in other circumstances... so far this was the only place they had met and the only relationship they had.
"I was hoping to talk to you about something a little... controversial. We can talk here, unless you're more comfortable moving into an office," she suggested. Callisto truly didn't care either way, though she could see how it would be easier for Dana to let emotions play a heavier part in her decision making if she was sitting right beside her comatose brother. Callisto was sure if she was near her own comatose brother she'd have trouble processing information. Thankfully, her brother wasn't comatose. And, also, sadly her brother wasn't comatose. He was long gone.

”Controversial?” Dana asked, repeating the word. While Dana wanted to stay by her brother’s side just to inspect and be ready for any kind of movement, the blonde knew it would be best of them to excuse their selves, privacy being a big factor. Even if the situation was about Noah himself. Mumbles of ’sure’ left the Knox’s lips along with soft pats against her brother’s ghostly white hand. Moving away from her brother’s bed once more, Dana rested her hands on her jeans, looking at Callisto.
”I think it would be better to move to an office.” she murmured with a gentle nod. If the topic was as bleak as she expected it to be – the blonde didn’t want any opportunity for her brother’s sleepy ears to listen in. Dana had hope for her comatose brother; hoping by the thinnest thread that the younger Knox boy could hear everything, feel everything, even visualise it all. Hope was the only thing Dana had going for her.
As she approached the door shielding Noah from the world and his fragile state, pale hands reached for the handle, lightly tugging at it. Blonde hair flipped over a shoulder as Dana looked back to Callisto, holding the door open for the healer. Clouds of doubt and inability to process information soon flooded Dana’s mind – how could she even focus on the most important thing she had going for her? ”Where are we heading to?” she questioned, just as the door made a soft click sound; hiding Noah from the world once more.

Dana said she would indeed be more comfortable in an office, and Callisto nodded, standing. Dana beat her to the door, and Callisto took a moment, to quickly check Noah's vitals. Dana looked back, and Callisto stepped away from the bed in order to step through the open door. "Thank you, just down here," she explained, moving ahead of Dana in order to lead the way.
Callisto didn't have her own office, but there were several shared offices, and Callisto led Dana to the one she used the most. She opened the door, gesturing for Dana to sit before sitting down across from her, a small table in between them. The decor was warm colors, meant to be comforting. At least that was how it was explained to Callisto.
Once they were settled Callisto took in a deep breath before starting her speech. "It involves using the concepts of Legilimens and... mind control," she paused. "the thought is that if we can get into his mind with Legilimens and see activity, great, but if we can't then we have to take it a step further... trying to access his action centers by seeing if we can control his body through his mind," she paused again, giving Dana a moment to respond her initial thoughts.

Blonde hair was lightly brushed to the side as Dana Knox watched Callisto take her younger siblings vitals – something that was of course common for a healer to do. Now in the hallway alongside her healer-friend, Dana nodded as she followed behind, into an office that seemed rather familiar for the two of them. When Noah was first admitted into St. Mungos, the Knox girl recalled speaking to Callisto in the same very room she entered, resulting with a small smile creeping onto Dana’s face once she took a seat. The warm colours from the walls somehow shone brightly in Dana’s face, as if it was a reminder that the place she sat in was indeed a hospital, while attempting to calm her down. It honestly didn’t work.
Blue eyes watched Callisto, how she sat gracefully, how she moved and even how she breathed. Dana was never this analytical until the accident, always paying close attention to the details of her brother’s conditions – even if she didn’t know what it meant. Though in this present moment, she knew the topic her friend was about to bring up would be difficult. And…It was. Legilimens? Dana thought to herself – another word she had no idea of. But with the mention of mind control; the Knox already began to panic. Mind Control was one thing Dana had always been guided to stay away from, of course from teachers but even her mother. While for some, they say it works as a hypnosis therapy, the art of medicine with magic was something entirely different.
”Mind…Control.” Dana repeated as if the concept was foreign on her tongue. The blonde’s brows furrowed softly in concentration and consideration. Would it be the best for her brother? ”Are there…Any possible risks? Besides not seeing any activity?” Dana knew if the situation had been reversed, her brother would have hopped at any opportunity to see her awake. But she just couldn’t help but be cautious. ”And what about the success rate…I mean. Your estimated success rate? In your honest opinion…”

Callisto let Dana said the words, let her take it in. Callisto didn't want to come right out and say it, but she was basically implying that they use one of the forbidden curses. Or, at least, a variation of it. The 'Imperius Curse'. Callisto had run the idea by her superiors, who - after months of research and convincing - only agreed that she could try it if the family signed off on it. Still, it had to be presented delicately.
Dana asked if there were any risks, aside from not seeing any activity in the boys brain. She asked about the success rate, at least for Callistos best estimate. "Well," Callisto started, her tone still professional and calm, "I can't exactly estimate a success rate because this sort of thing has never been tried before. Magically beings don't generally deal with comas, and if they do it's for a magical reason - something easy to find. This is strange," she explained further. "No normal treatments are working, so we have to assume it's deeper than that. As for risks - " she paused, "at the moment I don't see any, either it works or it doesn't. But there is the fear, well - concern - I have that accessing his mind in this way will cause him mental trauma. As in, if he does wake up he may experience some PTSD from having someone in his head. That's how all..." she paused again, taking a deep breath, "all victims of the Imperius Curse experience this sense of paranoia. So, since this is similar in nature, that is a possible side affect. He can be treated, through therapy and time, but it is still something to consider."

Dana Knox bit down on her lip as a sign of nervousness and concern as she tried to process the information Callisto had given to her. Words was the one thing the Knox girl was good at but currently she was at a loss for them. Rendered speechless, Dana’s mouth hung open while her eyes rimmed with tears, slowly but surely dripping down the curves of her cheeks before landing on her clothes. Even though no sound left the blonde’s lips, her eyes blinked slowly and then rapidly as she shook her head to herself, unsure of how to think. ”PTSD…” she breathed out, her voice unsteady.
”So what you plan to use…It’s a curse?” Dana questioned, her eyes locking onto her healer friend once more. The fact that Dana was considering the option of allowing Callisto to do such a thing brought a frown to Dana’s lips. She wished her mother was here. To possibly talk her out of it or encourage for the event to go on. But in the time Dana spent away because of work and pure avoidance, the Knox girl hadn’t seen her mother for weeks. ”I…I don’t know.” She mumbled, her head falling into her hands as she sniffled. ”It sounds too dangerous.”

Dana repeated the 'PTSD' part, which didn't surprise Cal. That was the side affect she had asked about, after all. Then Dana questioned the fact that it was a curse, and Callisto raised an eyebrow at her with disbelief before lowering her brow quickly, realizing how unprofessional that was. Did Dana really not know what the Imperius Curse was? Perhaps the girl had just pushed her knowledge of it from her mind, or hadn't paid attention in Defense Against the Dark Arts that day. Or maybe the professor had decided not to mention it, which Cal thought was foolish. Dana went on, her head vanishing into her hands, saying that it sounded dangerous, and Callisto nodded. "It is, hence why I wanted to discuss it with you in person," Callisto said formally. She felt bad that Dana was having an emotion reaction, but she couldn't suddenly become sympathetic on the spot. That wasn't an easy emotion for Callisto. "The 'curse'," Callisto paused, "would be a last resort. We'd try the Legilimens approach first," another pause, and her tone softened, "you don't have to decide right away. Think about it, talk with people you trust," she suggested. "We have all the time," unless, gods forbid, Noah didn't last very long.

The blonde’s mind clouded with too many thoughts that prevented her from thinking clearly. Considering Dana was once a student who excelled in classes she knew of the Imperius Curse; but with her brother’s life on the line, things she had learned, heard or seen had flew out of the window. Pale hands itched away at blonde strands as she tried to rack her mind around it. Go through with it? Or not? Dana questioned herself, chewing on her bottom lip out of habit and nervousness. The Knox soon lifted her head, eyes rimmed with tears looking up to meet Callisto’s. ”How soon can you do it?” Dana questioned, ignoring the advice from her healer friend.
While Dana remained unsure of her choice, the Knox thought to consider her options. A sigh left her lips while a frown gently tugged upon the corners of her mouth. Who did she have? That would understand a situation like this? Dana thought to herself, her hand reaching up to tug at her blonde locks. Her mother perhaps? Although she hadn’t heard from her in weeks. ”Or when would it be best for him to…undergo this?” Dana questioned, now pushing herself to her feet as she paced the room. Dana didn’t intend to rise the tension or anxiety levels within the room but with her brother’s life held in her hands, things felt pretty heavy on the Knox’s shoulders.

Cal sat patiently as Dana considered in silence, but sat up a little straighter when the blonde looked up at her. She asked how soon she could do it, and Callisto's eyes widened, briefly, with surprise. "Well, if permission is granted it would probably be within a week that we could actually start trying it out," she answered slowly, but Dana was also adding to her question, asking when it would be best for him to 'undergo' the procedure. She started pacing and Callisto stood, feeling that it was unprofessional for her to stay sitting now. "For him it doesn't make a difference when," she answered in all honesty. For someone like Noah, where there was no where else to go but down, it didn't matter when you took the chances - just that you took them. She wanted to say that out loud, but it wasn't entirely appropriate for her to push Dana in that way. "I think the real question is when it would be best for you family. Because, if - heaven forbid - it doesn't work, you have to be prepared for the reality that either A. it didn't work and the worst happens, or B. it didn't work even though you were hopeful. Either way, it's about how prepared you are."@dana

Dana knew that if she allowed anything to happen too soon she would regret it simultaneously. Sure enough she wanted her younger brother back in her life but the blonde knew if she took the actions into her own hands without even discussing it with her mother or taking the risks into consideration she could potentially lose her brother for…Good. The Knox nodded in understanding and brought her leg up to cross it and so she could rest her hands on it. She looked around the room as silence filled the air, trying to rack her thoughts together but the only thought that came to mind was the possibility of losing Noah.
”I’m not prepared at all.” she murmured as she admitted it, pushing her blonde locks behind her ears with both hands. She watched as her friend and healer began to stand and pace around the open office, drawing her bottom lip between her mouth to chew on the skin of her bottom lip. ”I’m technically his legal guardian and all considering my mother’s disappearance previously but…She deserves a say in the choice too.” Noah is her son after all.

Dan said she wasn't prepared at all, which Mina understood. Cal handled death pretty well, which was a good thing considering she was a healer and all, but it was different with family, especially when it came to siblings. Callisto didn't respond to that comment, though, since Dana didn't really direct it to her. Cal let Dana have that for herself.
Dana spoke about how she was technically her brothers legal guardian and all, but that her mother still deserved a say. Callisto stopped pacing, and nodded, "talk to her then. In the long run you'd regret it if you didn't," she suggested. Cal knew that she wouldn't be able to make a choice like this without consulting her family. Granted, her family was a lot closer and less... 'disappear-y' than Dana's mother. Aside from her sister, Sarah, of course.

Regret was one thing Dana Knox had always wanted to avoid. While she technically looked after Noah and Kara at a young age – considering her parents doomed relationship – the Knox knew no choices could be made until her mother approved. When Callisto spoke, suggesting that a conversation with her mother is a good choice, teeth chewed upon a drawn-in bottom lip, something done out of habit and nerves overall. It had been a few weeks since Dana had last seen her mother, ever since her random return to England following her disappearance.
”Give me…A week.” the blonde said, finally speaking up as her gaze moved away from the floor – settling on the familiar image before her: her friend and close related healer. ”A week to convince my mother and maybe…Convince myself.”
