It had been almost three months since Ron had found Harry’s wand. Since then, it seemed as though the wizarding world had given up hope of ever finding her best friend alive again. Hermione would never lose hope; he had survived so much in the past, so much before he even began legal in the eyes of the wizarding world. Merlin, even more as a baby than most people suffered in their lifetime! She didn’t think he would go down swinging so easily. But the fractures in the Order had splintered, and now they were in two groups, not fighting against each other, but not really working together either. The whole ordeal kept the Minister awake at night, tossing and turning with images of Harry, tortured, dead or dying in her mind. Her separation from Ron meant she couldn’t turn over to feel his warm body next to his, breathing soundly as he always managed to. It was all a lot to handle. Hermione’s concern specifically today however, was Harry’s youngest and only daughter, Lily. Named for his mother, she had the red hair she had seen in Harry’s pictures, but her own mothers’ eyes. Lily had always been the rebellious, wild one of the trio of Weasley-Potter children, but Lily was the best at hiding her true emotions. Hermione knew how James and Albus were trying to cope with losing Harry, but she had no idea what was going on inside Lily’s head. And she was determined to find out. So here she was, sitting behind Headmistress McGonagalls desk feeling slightly out of place, waiting for Lily to arrive. She would have gotten the note from the fourth year by now to report to the Headmistresses office, and she knew Harry and Ginny had instilled high respect for Minerva in all of their children, so she doubted Lily would be late. So she sat back, folded her hands in front of her, and waited. lily luna potter

@hermionejean 9.20.2024 Finally it was Friday. Her only class for the day (which was a godsend in itself), was midday and over in a flash, like it usually went. Typically Lily found herself dipping into her daydreams by this point in the week, and wanting to pay attention to such a boring Charms subject was a pain in the behind. None of it would matter once she graduated anyways, and if it did, then she would relearn it. Having a second go at a subject didn’t sound all that bad, and it wasn’t like she would be expected to know everything off the top of her head at the drop of a hat. Even then, having a set profession to graduate into hadn’t even happened with her yet, so focusing in on any specific class was also quite silly. Going with the flow and doing what she wanted sounded just fine to her. And that was why the second half of the class period, after a quick break, she relocated to the back of the room and made it look like she was reading intently the entire time. Instead, she was drawing a stick figure war of grand proportions across the pages of her Charms book, the rather distressed and nervous blonde Hufflepuff situated to her left flipping the pages of Lily’s book whenever the professor instructed the class to do so. Having the battle extend across an entire chapter was hilarious until she looked up to see the concerned eyes of Cordelia trying to figure out what on earth she was doing to her book. What started as a silently mouthed ‘what?’ turned into the actual question when the gong of the class bell went off, signaling her school week, over.
In a flash, Lily was out into the corridor beyond, knowing her badger buddy still had another class to go to, until she too, was finished. If only that had stayed the same for Lily. A little child approached her as she exploded into the hallway, almost toppling the poor thing over in the process. A few muttered words and a note shoved into her hands, Lily unfolded it, half expecting it to be a written confession of sorts from some admirer. How wonderful that would be! Instead it was a note to report to the Headmistresses office, and her feet immediately refused to move. This had to be about her grades at the end of the previous term. She hadn’t done anything crazy yet this year. Either that or she was being framed for some mischief. Thinking about all of the possibilities as she slowly meandered towards the head office, Lily eventually made it to the statue, the entrance opening upon her arrival.
She expected to see McGonagall there, peering over the top of her half-moon spectacles, and so her entrance through the office door was slow and meek. If she was going to be berated or punished for trouble she didn’t cause, then there was no reason to go in guns blazing. But the Headmistress wasn’t sat behind her desk like she usually was. Aunt Hermione was. On any other occasion, a visit like this would probably have been cause for celebration, a million questions rifled off about how things were going at work, or simply what was up. Lily hovered around the entrance to the office though, afraid of what she was going to be told if she entered further, as if her distance from her aunt was going to stop any level of communication from happening. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to know whatever it was, even if she had to hear it. So she stayed planted by the door, color draining from her face as she expected the worst possible news.

Hermione saw the color drain from Lily’s face and immediately regretted having her come to the Headmistresses office. She knew Parvati would have been fine with letting her into the Common Room to talk to her niece. As Minister for Magic she did technically have the pull to make such a request, but it helped that she had known Parvati for over thirty years. But no, Hermione had to continue to be a teacher’s pet and request to use McGonagall’s office. Of course Lily would assume the worst; her father was still missing in action, and they now knew he was wandless. Hermione was keeping faith of course, but she knew the odds were not in her best friends favor. “Lily!” she exclaimed, then cleared her throat. “I have not come with news of your father. We do not have anything new to report, and in this case, no news is good news!” she clarified, trying to muster up a small smile. “I know...that can’t really be much of a comfort, but I’m not here on official Ministry business,” she added. Hermione gestured to the seats in front of the fire, and joined her niece. She had always felt a pang of anxiety whenever she was meeting with her professors; them sitting behind their desk, peering at her as she sat meekly in front of them. Yes, typically she was there to be commended for her exam scores, but her boggart had been McGonagall telling her she failed everything. She certainly would never forget THAT particular examination. “I wanted to see how you were doing, in light of everything that was going on,” she told her, reaching out and taking one of Lily’s pale hands in hers. “How are your….lunar cycles going? Are you taking the Wolfsbane as instructed?” she asked, keeping her voice low even though they were alone. She distinctly remembered when Harry had, incredulously, told her about Lily becoming a werewolf. Fortunately, thanks in part to her legislature, werewolves were better regarded than they were a few decades ago. She had corresponded with Jamie Greyback, a former student and, if Hermione wasn’t mistaken, a friend of Lily’s regarding the legislature soon after it had passed, so she knew Lily wasn’t the only werewolf her age last year at school. “I just want to make sure you have everything you need,” she added, hoping she wasn’t sounding like she was mollycoddling. lily luna potter

@hermionejean 9.20.2024 Her actions were obvious. Aunt Hermione had seen right through them. At the same time, the reaction to the entrance was a weight off of the Gryffindor’s shoulders. Kind of. This talk wasn’t about her dad. Whether that was a good or bad thing was still tough to process. On one hand, she invited news that indicated he would be fine and coming home soon. On the other…she tried not thinking about that one as much. The gray area of news, which was what this was, meant nothing to her. If anything, it was all bad news until there was something good.
Lily nodded her head as her aunt finished explaining that none of this was Ministry business, finally convincing her feet to move again so that she could walk further into the room. Rationality kicked in as she did so, convincing her that if anything had happened to her dad, her mum would have been in the room as well. They wouldn’t have left her to deal with something like that on her own, would they? She took a seat in front of the fireplace, as she was instructed to do so. The warmth of the fire brought a little bit of life back to her, the scare she had upon her entrance wearing off slower than she would have liked. Aunt Hermione continued asking questions as she sat down as well, taking one of her hands in the process. “I’m doing the best I can I guess,” Lily said. She wished she could be more chipper about it, like how she usually was, but that was tough during real talks. “You think you could have someone make it taste better?” she asked, a small laugh following it. “I didn’t realize that was part of the process.” There were a lot of things she hadn’t thought about, but none of them were strong enough for her to regret it in any way.

Hermione watched her niece as she visibly loosened up after the mention that the topic of conversation was not surrounding her missing father. Of course, the Minister would have loved to come bearing exciting news that Harry had been found, completely unharmed and well. Or a daring tale of escaping his captors, an extremist international terrorist group had been defeated and dismantled, scaring Elaine Dupree even further into hiding. Or he had been in the Americas, deep undercover posing as a Muggle, not daring to tell his close friends and family what he had been assigned to do in fear of their safety. Alas, these were just the wildly imaginative stories Hermione told herself to keep her sane until she saw her friend again. It also helped stave away the nightmare of discovering her best friend was dead, his remains hidden at the bottom of the ocean, not to be found for many years to come. Hermione didn’t want to think of that sort of outcome though. Circling back to the conversation topic at hand, Hermione could not help but smile a little wistfully as Lily mentioned making the Wolfsbane potion taste a little better. “Oh I wish, but sadly no matter how many variants are tried and tested, anything sweet makes it useless,” she replied sadly. “But...everything else is alright? Classes going well, extracurriculars, other than the obvious…” Hermione trailed off. She felt a little like she was having a one sided conversation, asking probing questions to get more of a sense of where Lily’s head was at. She wasn’t quite ready to come flat out and say how concerned she was about the girl, but it was coming close to that point. lily luna potter

@hermionejean 9.20.2024 Lily wrinkled her nose at the fact that altering the Wolfsbane recipe would void out its effects. She had preferred the first few months of being a wolf, and having the chance to run free. But that wasn’t allowed anymore. Now she often wondered what the point of becoming one if it was against the rules to exercise her inner beast. Being a giant, sleepy dog was no fun. Then again, neither was being a part of the supposed werewolf packs. Like she was going to let them step on her freedom too. These were probably the things that the school and her parents were terrified of her ignoring when she first contracted the lycanthropy. Risking other students’ lives so that she could stretch her legs once a month was totally not a cool thing now that she looked back on it. On the flipside, knocking herself out in a locked dungeon cell or a dingy hotel room during the full moon was not the sort of thing she wanted to be doing for the rest of her life. There had to be a happy median that they could all come to agreeance on somewhere among that.
Then Aunt Hermione started asking those questions. There were obviously much worse ones to have thrown at her, more invasive or personal (which she would probably answer anyways because that’s how she was). But these ones…these were the questions she didn’t like being asked because that meant if she wasn’t honest, all it took was a quick glance at her transcript to know how she was really fairing in her classes. “I could be…doing better in my classes,” Lily said slowly, purposely looking away from her aunt so that she could stare into the fireplace. “I quit the Quidditch team at the end of last year too, so I don’t really have a lot going on.” That one was still numb; she had quit to ‘focus on school’, whatever the hell that meant. The real reason was stupid and impulsive, and not at all worth getting into again. The Gryffindor team would probably welcome her back in with open arms if she wanted to go back, but it had been too long already and she was out of practice. Nobody wanted a teammate like that.

Hermione raised her eyebrows in surprise. Lily had quit the Quidditch team? That was news to her, and certainly something Ginny or Harry before he had disappeared would have mentioned. “Do your parents know? Or did they know when you quit, if they know by now?” she asked curiously. Lily had had the natural talent from both of her parents on the Quidditch field, as did her brother James. Hermione had honestly assumed that she was going to follow in her brothers footsteps, except play for the Harpies just so she could beat her brother in a match. That did seem like a very Lily thing to do after all. Still, her niece must have had a reason for quitting the team, and if she wanted to divulge it, she would in time. “Do you have any classes you do enjoy?” she asked, decidedly not asking the other, more Hermione question - which ones are you having trouble with? That was how Hermione almost instinctively functioned; finding out what was wrong, and coming up with a solution to the problem. It was why she had been known as such a bossy know-it-all as a student in Hogwarts, and she was sure a few of her colleagues below her at the Ministry had similar opinions. Merlin, some of them were even the same people. Still, Hermione got the sense that Lily needed to focus on something good, so if there was a class, just a single class that she was doing well in, Hermione wanted to zoom in on that. The last thing she wanted was for her niece to feel like the only way out was dropping out, or worse, getting expelled. lily luna potter

@hermionejean 9.20.2024 She should have kept her mouth shut about the Quidditch thing. Dropping out of her favorite sport was sure to sound some alarms. There had already been questions from professors and her mum, and even the rest of the Gryffindor team had been confused about why she chose to step down. Lily knew that probably blew her only chance of going professional. Taking a year off and trying to compete against a different class of rookies would be impossible, even with her stats as a player being relatively decent throughout her career. “Mum found out when the school sent the supplies list and there wasn’t anything mentioning Quidditch on it,” Lily said quietly. “She thought it was a mistake, but I told her it wasn’t.” Clearing her throat, she continued, “I don’t think my headspace would have been in the right place this year. That’s not fair for the team when they can find someone just as good or better to replace me.” Lily didn’t want the pity from her teammates, and in her mind, it was easier to give up and let them move on than to drag them into the ground. If they really wanted her around, she could manage them or help run practices, but she was done with matches for the house team.
“Charms and Care of Magical Creatures,” Lily answered. Not that she was doing great in either of them, but they were easier to pay attention in, and in the former she could bum notes off of Cordelia if she forgot to get them. That was sort of like learning them straight from the professor. The latter was mostly because she was allowed to get outside and stretch, and playing with magical creatures was always fun. “But it’s just the first month. I’m sure once classes get into full swing I’ll be fine.” She gave herself a reassuring nod before stopping to stare off into the fireplace again.

Hermione nodded, understanding what Lily meant. She was never a big Quidditch person herself - obviously when Harry and then Ron had been on the team she was always in the stands cheering them on as much as she could, but flying was never really something she was particularly good at. The Weasley-Potter family however had Quidditch in their blood; Ginny was immensely talented herself, and she didn’t even have to mention that Harry had made the team in his first year. It was likely a small but sufficient blow to Ginny when she realized Lily wasn’t going to continue playing Quidditch. “Well, if you didn’t feel that you could give it your all, then I understand. Though I highly doubt you’re completely replaceable,” she said with a small nudge to her niece’s shoulder. She knew Sav was the Captain this year, and likely friendly with Lily; he would understand why she decided to drop from the team, or at least she hoped. “See, there’s always something to be excited about,” she said earnestly, noting that Luna Lovegood had recently taken over the post of Care of Magical Creatures professor. She couldn't lie; she would love to sit in on that class. However, she was not Dolores Umbridge - she would not hover over classrooms just because of her high Ministry status. The school didn’t deserve that, and Luna especially did not. She wondered if Hugo was taking the class this year - he would thoroughly enjoy it. “Well you know you can always come to me if you need anything. It’s been awhile since I’ve been in school but I’ve retained quite a bit of information over the years.” Hermione chuckled, more to herself than anyone else. “Of course I’d understand if you went to Hugo or Rose with anything since they’re much more recent, but know that….well, I’m here for you Lily,” she said, her tone softening slightly as she looked her niece square in the eye. “Whatever you may need, I’m here.”lily luna potter ooc: dude feel free to end this lol

@hermionejean 9.20.2024 Was she replaceable on the Quidditch team? Maybe. Lily knew that her personality tended to clash with some of the more serious players on the pitch (not that something like that ever weighed down on her, that was their loss for being angry about her having fun), but there was the possibility that more talent would rise up in her stead. The Gryffindors would never be angry at her and she knew that. If anything, they would finally be able to formulate real strategies and play routes, something that was almost impossible to do when she was in the sky. Her ability to be anywhere and everywhere made the game hectic; a free-for-all. Now the Gryffindors could focus on their teamwork and hone their skills. The wildcard was finally gone for good. “Probably not, but they need someone that's there,” Lily repeated. Like she had already said, her headspace and attitude wasn’t ‘there’ quite yet. The possibility that it never would be again scared her, but she also knew that there would be a time where moving on and accepting the events of the prior spring would have to happen.
Nodding her head about the ‘exciting’ classes they were talking about, she stayed quiet as her aunt offered help if she needed it. Being bitter and frustrated was only going to negatively impact everything she did, and even though she knew that, it was hard to shake that feeling. Every time something new came to light (or not), it felt like another weight was being placed on top of her. Having Adrian back was a brief respite from it though not for long. She could only listen to the whispers of her fellow students or read the Daily Prophet articles so much before having another wave of conflicting emotions. Taking up the offer didn’t sound so bad, and writing a letter every so often probably couldn’t hurt. “Thanks Aunt Hermione. I’ll let you know if I do,” Lily said quietly as she leaned in to give her aunt a hug.
[The End]
