THE ART CLUB WASN'T EXACTLY ELI'S 'SCENE' per-say, but as far as he was aware, it was where all the photographer wannabe's hung out. Eli hadn't taken many pictures while at Hogwarts so far, but he'd been preoccupied. Between trying to keep up with the British curriculum, to dealing with his confusion surrounding Ashley, his head had been all over the place. Everywhere apart from his camera, which had bummed him out when he realised.
So, when he eventually ventured down in the Dungeons where the art club met, he hadn't expected much. Maybe some place to develop old pictures. At the very least, somewhere to lay his head down and hide from his responsibilities. Either way, Eli expected some kind of distraction. What Eli hadn't expected was to see Cordie when he slipped inside.
The blonde hadn't met him on good terms. But, ever since his rather odd train ride to the school, Eli thought maybe things were better. "Cordie?" Eli said, his demeanour immediately brightening at the sight of a familiar face. "I didn't know you hung out here..." He bustled in, his camera swinging around his neck dangerously as he set a bag of equipment on the table she sat at. "Is Lily here, too?" Eli asked, searching the surrounding area for the redhead. He wasn't surprised not to see her, sure he would have heard.

10.XX.2024 Another day, another couple of hours spent in the club room prepping her photos for development. School was already a month in and she was still backed up from what she had taken over the summer. All those day trips out into the city and surrounding areas had been great to test her independence and ability to roam on her own, but done a number on her wallet and the amount of time it took to go through the production process. She had certainly gotten in over her head and the work was going a lot slower than she had thought it would. At this rate, it was going to take the entire semester just to clear up her finished rolls from the summer, and then anything she took now would have to wait until after Christmas.
Standing over the wash basin used to clean out the development chemicals, Cordelia ran her hands through her hair as she tried to figure out a faster process. She could stay all night and develop them, but there would be a point where a curious prefect would hear the water running and come snooping around. Her actions were innocent enough but breaking curfew was breaking curfew after all. That wasn’t exactly her thing. As she contemplated the idea, she didn’t hear the door to the clubroom open and wasn’t alerted to the other person’s presence until she heard her name called. With a slight jump and her hands flying to her sides, she spun around to see Eli standing behind her. He had his camera with him. Her own was with the rest of her school supplies on a table in the corner of the room, away from the table space that the other members would need if they ever showed up. Setting her things off to the side decreased the likelihood that they would ask her to move it or any conversation at all. That was preferable.
“I-I uhh…y-yeah I do. I’m in the club…” she trailed off, shooting a quick glance at the timer on the wash. It still read ten minutes. That was long enough to have a conversation with Eli. “No she’s n-not. Lily do-doesn’t like being coo-cooped up, y-y-you know?” And no offense to Lily, but sitting her down and telling her to create any medium art other than finger-painting was going to be impossible. “If I s-see her, I c-can tell her you were loo-looking for her…”

LOOPING THE STRAP FOR HIS CAMERA OVER HIS head, Eli set it down on the table top along with his bag. A whirlwind of smiles and curiosity as he picked up discarded pieces of charcoal and even a photograph sitting face down in a pile. All without really paying close attention, more of an excuse to keep his hands moving. "Cool, cool." He said offhandedly, nodding his head. He'd been hoping to see Cordie around campus. Ever since the train, he'd felt better about what had happened over the summer.
Eli grabbed the seat of a stool and dragged it across the floor noisily, plopping down near Cordie while she spoke. She had his careful attention, ever since Eli had realised she stuttered he'd been trying to make a point of being more patient. Something he hadn't been the first time they'd met. "Cooped up? Yeah... I feel that." He nodded emphatically, hands loose in his lap. Eli would always prefer open space to anything else. "Nah, that's okay." Eli shook his head, he hadn't been looking for her, but she was funny and he'd started to associate Cordie with Lily automatically. "I'll see her when I see her."
"I was kind of hoping to develop my camera rolls from this summer?" Eli added, reaching over for his bag where he'd discarded it on the table, rifling around inside where he had four rolls of film. "You guys do that here, right?" He asked, smiling. "Could you... help me, maybe?" His mum had always been the person who developed his photographs and after that he'd just let them pile up until his dad called an old family friend, or they were inevitably misplaced.

10.XX.2024 What was normally a quiet and laborious task of developing film, had recently become more social over the last two months. Cordelia didn’t know if Eli was a member of the club yet or not, or simply wanted to use the facilities in the same manner she did, but his presence here meant that her work was going to potentially slow down now. Competing to use the dark room and developing station had never been a problem before, and occasionally when it had, she had offered up her services to do everything for the interested party. That was a rare occurrence for the Hufflepuff, but she enjoyed helping when it came to photography and developing pictures was something she was pretty good at.
He was now pulling a chair of his own over to the table where she had been working, agreeing that he understood what Lily felt. They all did, mostly because she was vocal about her distaste for being inside. Cordelia couldn’t blame her though – she was a werewolf. They enjoyed being outside just like a domesticated dog. She felt bad thinking that way, but it was the truth, and Lily did like running around like a crazy person when she had the chance. “S-Sounds abo-about right for her,” Cordelia agreed, nodding her head. Hunting down the Gryffindor was silly. Lily liked the hunt, not being hunted. Cordelia had learned that the hard way a few times.
More surprising than Lily being in the art club though, was that Eli was looking for help developing his rolls of film. And he wanted her to assist with it. Cordelia bit down onto her lower lip as she thought about it for a few seconds. She wasn’t exactly busy at the moment, waiting for her own film canisters to soak in water to get all of the chemicals out. “Y-Yeah w-we do…it’s m-mostly just m-me, but yeah…” She slid off of her own stool and motioned for Eli to grab his four rolls of film and bring them along. “It doesn’t t-take too long,” Cordelia explained further, collecting the canisters and necessary pieces for the process, propping the door to the dark room open so that Eli could enter. “N-No lights. The film will be exposed and r-ruined.” The rules were easy enough.

ELI WAS METHODICALLY STACKING AND THEN knocking down his four rolls of film while Cordelia spoke. His fingers in constant motion as she admitted that it was mostly her developing film and that it wouldn't take too long. Two things Eli was deeply relieved to hear. For one, she had the know how to help him, and it didn't take too long either. Eli was a bit impatient about everything, and he was eager to see his film, and show her too.
"Great!" He bounced off the chair a half second after Cordelia, gathering his film all in one hand as she motioned him to follow her to an inconspicuous door off to one side. He wouldn't have thought a dark room lurked inside the clubs room, it looked like a simple supply closet from where he had been standing. A small, impressed smirk hiked both of his cheeks as he followed her, almost dropping his canisters because of his own distractions.
"Yeah..." Eli mumbled, blinking at the sudden absence of light as he entered the room behind her and the door snicked shut at his back, sealing them in. It was smaller than he'd thought it would be, the pungent smell of chemicals tickling his nose. He realised if he dropped his canisters now he'd never find them again. "I think I heard my mom say that once." He was whispering, the dark making him quiet. Though he usually never mentioned his mother on purpose at all. It was bad news to poke at an open wound.
Eli gravitated towards the various displays of trays, string hung up above them for photos to hang and dry. "Are you developing right now?" Eli asked, squinting as he tried to see what was hanging dry, pegged on the rope neatly. It all seemed much more complicated than he had first thought. Eli blindly held out his canisters, but his hands bumped in to Cordelia's side, she'd been standing much nearer than he'd thought, his depth perception skewed by the strange lack of natural light. "Sorry..." He laughed nervously, juggling the plastic tubes slightly as he pulled away.

10.XX.2024 She kind of hoped that Eli wouldn’t bring his level of exuberance into the darkroom – that was always a recipe for disaster. Cordelia kept her thoughts to herself though. She didn’t need to be negative when she finally had someone else to talk to about photography and especially after she had already offered to help him roll the film up and develop it. These were the steps she should have taken a few years ago in order to help get over her social anxieties. Not with less than a year left in school. Overcoming all of that in such a short amount of time was going to be impossible and made healer training even less likely than she had initially anticipated. If dealing with friendly classmates was going to be this difficult, then patients would be more than a handful for her.
The click of the dark room door shutting behind them suddenly made Cordelia more conscious of the position she had just put herself in. It was mainly because of the conversation Lily had held with Eli whilst on the train ride at the start of term. The face burning, embarrassment inducing concept of ‘having a fling’ with any sort of person over the past summer had no place when it came to developing photographs, but Cordelia was still thinking about it. She hadn’t done that since the first day of school and realizing that she was going to be seeing a lot more of Eli around since he was also in Hufflepuff. The one positive about all this though, was that if she stuttered in her self-conscious state, Eli wouldn’t realize it because she did that already, and it would be too dark to see her face reddening again (assuming that it would).
“Right,” Cordelia responded as he mentioned his mother had told him about light exposure. That was the main component to taking the photograph in the first place and also its ultimate downfall if improperly handled. Which was also why this wasn’t the room they were pulling the film out in. There was an even darker, sealed room in the back of the development room they were currently in. She knew the path through the dark without needing any assistance, but made sure she went slowly enough so that Eli could follow her. “Y-Yeah…they’re in the w-wash to get the ch-chemicals out." She pointed towards the wash station, though was sure Eli wouldn’t be able to see it from where they were.
Stopping in front of the dark room closet, she felt Eli bump into her, the familiar strike of nervousness from earlier suddenly coming back again. The dark room was barely big enough for two people, and she was going to be moving around quickly to get all of his films in protective canisters so they could be developed. “…f-fine…” she mumbled quietly, the entirety of the contraction ‘It’s’ being lost. She tried again, “It-It’s o-okay…d-don’t m-m-move m-much in here though. D-Don’t want t-to d-drop the film…” Holding out her hands with little ‘light’ they had left, Cordelia waited for Eli to drop the canisters in her hands. Then the door would be closed, and she would go about her work.

ELI COULDN'T BE SURE, BUT HE THOUGHT CORDIE was stuttering a little more than usual as he stood closely behind her, allowing himself to be led in to an even darker room near the back of the first. It was smaller too and Eli tried to keep his distance just in case he was making her nervous, but it was almost impossible. He sandwiched himself against the closed door and juggled the canisters as he held them out to her.
"Yeah," He laughed nervously, snorting through his nose as he blindly handed off the film canisters to her open palms, their hands inevitably brushing as he made sure to hand them and not drop them. It was a bit of a juggle and a tangle of fingers, but eventually he relinquished them and could leave that new responsibility with Cordie. It was bad, but he definitely preferred it that way. At the very least if they rolled off, it wouldn't be by his hand.
"You know, this is much more complicated than I thought it'd be." Eli began to ramble, his eyes blinking rapidly in the dark, roving around the room, but eventually falling back on Cordie. At the very least he could see her stark yellow hair and pale face, anchoring him to the room instead of the blind darkness. "Don't you get freaked out alone in the dark?" Eli could stand night fall, where the moon was a beacon and he could count the stars. But the dark room was different, it felt almost oppressive. "I feel like I can hear my thoughts echoing," He added with a short laugh, unable to stop himself from talking on and on.

10.XX.2024 She maintained her vigil with her hands stretched out towards Eli, waiting for the canisters to fall into them. They would probably be fine if they fell – she had dropped her own a number of times over the years and only a couple of them were actually damaged or exposed. Waiting patiently as he fumbled around with the canisters and tried to get them to where they belonged in her hands, Cordelia blew a strand of hair out of her face to pass the time. Eventually he found them, and she immediately spun on her heels to where the rest of the supplies were stationed in the room. “Th-Thanks. C-Close the door?” she said over her shoulder, making sure she an image of where everything was burned into her mind. The worst part about extracting the film roll was knocking a spindle off the table or losing track of the opener she used to crack the canisters apart. “N-Not really…” she answered Eli’s question. The dark room only became a panic if the door was opened mid-film extraction. She was sure she didn’t have to tell him to keep the door closed at all times. Trying to salvage a partially exposed reel was almost impossible.
Eli laughed and mentioned something about hearing his thoughts, and Cordelia ignored him. She was more focused on getting the reels where they needed to be, swiftly cracking open the first one and latching it onto the spindle so she could start rolling it. She briefly played with the idea of walking him through what she was doing but quickly realized that would take her too long. In the time it took her to do one canister, she would have spent at least another five to ten minutes explaining and answering questions. It was easier to bring him back with practice film later if he wanted to learn. “F-First one is done,” she explained as she sealed the roll into the canister that would hold the film during the chemical process. Cordelia immediately went into the second one, popping it open and rolling it just as fast as she had done with the first. Developing hundreds of rolls made it easy to get good at. “And so is the s-second.” She moved past where she was sure Eli was standing and reached for the door to open it back up so he could see the end result. “Once the w-wash is done, we c-can p-put them in.”

PUSHING THE DOOR CLOSED WHEN ASKED THEY were both plunged in to a watery darkness that was different than before. He trusted her process, but it still made him curious. How it worked and if she really enjoyed it. It had to be odd, moving around in the weird lighting, with only film canisters and the chemical smell to keep her company. Of course, this time she had him to deal with too. He wasn't sure if that was a welcome distraction or not, but it was too late to back out now.
He'd sort of hoped she'd walk him through how to do it, and was a little disappointed when his laughter echoed back to him unanswered. But, then he realised she wasn't really good with small talk. He'd noticed her stutter, but never commented on it, figuring it was something she might be sensitive about. He rocked restlessly in the middle of the room, like an abandoned ship bobbing around on the sea front. "That was quick," He lied, though it had still felt long in the silent darkness.
Eli moved quickly as if to open the door, but she beat him to it. But, he was already moving so that when she slid past him her body brushed against his. His breath caught and he could smell her shampoo, which was sort of coconut-y and not at all what he expected. His heart skipped instinctively and he swallowed as made to step away, but something was caught in the loose Hufflepuff pin on his shirt pocket. It was hair, her hair was caught.
"Uh, you're hairs caught in my badge," He muttered awkwardly, sweat making his hands slippery as he tried to reach up and lean away at the same time, figuring she wouldn't like how close they were standing. He tried to untangle it, but could barely see in the dim lighting. He laughed stiffly. "I'm... I'm sorry, I should get this fixed, but I always forget it's even pinned to this shirt." He was rambling, clumsy fingers trying to fix the mess he'd made, his face screwing up in embarrassment.

10.XX.2024 Of course putting the film in the canisters was quick. She didn’t want to make him wait forever. Everything was time based when it came to developing film, and if her timing was right, the wash for her film would be done soon and she could toss his canisters into the chemicals within a few minutes. There would be time to mess around another day, but for now she wanted him to be able to see the final product as soon as possible. The first few times she had developed film on her own, it had been painstakingly slow and the chance that she would probably screw up and destroy the film had her anxious the entire time. Eli didn’t seem like he was the same bundle of nervousness that she was, but saving him from that fate his first time was the least she could do.
At the same time, completing tasks quickly wasn’t a normal Cordelia thing, and her hurried rush out of the dark room only seemed to make her attempt to leave that much more difficult. A slight tug of her hair had her head being pulled back into the room, one foot barely escaping the prison of darkness. At first she thought she had gotten it caught on something inside the room, or maybe even on the door, but the small vibrations from something pulling told her it wasn’t either of those. Eli spoke up, saying her hair was caught on his badge. Despite its curly mess, the only trouble she ever had with her hair was untangling knots, never caused by getting it caught on another person. The closest she had been to this was when her cat decided it was playtime instead of studying time, batting away at stray strands that dangled within reach of a paw. Eli kept fumbling with his attempts though, and she could only assume it was going to get more tangled the longer it took. Head tilted sideways, every attempt at trying to see what was happening was met with another sharp pull on her head, keeping her in her trapped position. “Undo it,” she muttered, unsure if Eli would hear her over his awkward laughing. “The b-badge…I c-can get it out then.” Maybe. The only other option would be to cut it out, and she kind of liked her hair as it was.

THE PANIC THAT QUICKLY OVERWHELMED ELI was accompanied by a sharp embarrassment that was turning his face a vibrant shade of red. He felt the heat warming his neck and cheeks and his chest rumble with awkward, stilted laughter that he couldn't curb. The entire situation was making his hands sweaty and he truly couldn't see where his badge and Cordie's hair began. It was a disaster.
With every pull, Eli could see her head yanked towards him, but she wasn't saying anything. Somehow that was worse as his clumsy fingers fumbled with the knot so much that he began making it worse. "M'sorry," He mumbled, gritting his teeth as he tried to bend his head to get a closer look and ended up knocking it against hers once. She finally stuttered out a suggestion and he felt stupid for not trying before, but he couldn't find the latch. It had been attached to his robes so long he couldn't remember if it was on the left or the right. He ended up simply pushing on it until he felt some kind of release.
The badge dropped away from his robes and he lurched backwards, giving Cordie space as he swallowed roughly. He felt entirely humiliated and it was the first time in a long time he'd wanted to run from the scene of the crime. "I-" And then he looked down to where her hair had knotted and saw his little badge still dangling from her hair. The pin sharp and glinting menacingly. Shifting his gaze his nostrils flared as he laughed drily, fumbling with his sweaty palms. "This is awkward..." He said, as if to try and break the tense silence. "I- I'm sorry about your hair."

10.XX.2024 Apologies continued to spill out of Eli as he fumbled with the knot in her hair. Cordelia wasn’t exactly annoyed by it, but if he did stop and clear his mind for a moment or two, their entanglement probably wouldn’t have been as bad as it had become. She wasn’t brave enough to speak up like that though, and her silence was most likely seen as anger or embarrassment from the whole situation. She felt a new shade of red burn into her cheeks, but that could have been from either the effort put into her hair or the embarrassing nature of their entrapment. At one point in the fumbling, Eli decided to lean forward, Cordelia could only wonder what for, and his head bumped into the top of hers. She stopped where she was, deciding that until he unfastened the pin, she wouldn’t move. There was no point in two of them struggling when one had a simple way to fix all of it.
The hair that was caught went limp as she felt the pin slip from Eli’s shirt, the cold metal swinging in a pendulum motion as gravity pulled it into her neck. Freedom was still a ways away though, and Cordelia immediately moved across the room towards her bag. She had a small mirror that she kept in there, and she was going to need its assistance to get the knot undone. “It’s f-fine,” she said quietly back at Eli while rummaging through her belongings, hand finally finding the mirror after a few moments. “Accidents happen.” She knew all about those, always bumping into people or dropping her things on the ground. If anything, she was easily more to blame in this situation than Eli was. By trying to squeeze by him, she ran into him and her hair got caught. Simple as that.
But as she observed the situation in the mirror, her mouth curled down. The knot was worse than she thought. No matter how much fiddling or yanking she did, the hair wouldn’t unravel from its new friend. The other problem was that it was fairly high on her head, which meant cutting the hair would be a lengthy process as well. At least doing that would get the thing out faster. Chewing on her lower lip as she went through her options, Cordelia finally set her mirror down on the table and turned back to Eli. “C-Can you grab the s-s-scissors from the cabinet o-over there?” she asked, pointing at the one along the far wall of the club room. Hopefully Eli was better at cutting hair than she was.

STANDING STIFFLY BY THE DOOR ELI THOUGHT about his options, but mostly he wondered if he could flee without insulting Cordie. In the end, he figured he couldn't, gnawing on his lip as she examined her hair carefully. He watched her walk away from a distance, suddenly cautious about his every step as he mutely watched her rifle around in her bag. She came out with a mirror, and Eli cringed all the more as she finally got a good look at the damage. It was a mess.
"I mean-" Eli began, stuttering slightly as he took a step forward, a shaky chuckle failing to lighten the mood. "It can't be that bad, right?" The mention of scissors had shocked him and it showed on his face, a slack mouth and wide owl eyes. "Can't you work your charms magic?" But, he still crossed the room and grabbed the scissors anyway, gripping them tightly as he closed the space between them and shifted from foot to foot. "You're not gonna... are you gonna cut it out?" He asked, though that was a stupid question and he knew it. Why else would she ask for the scissors?

10.XX.2024 Was the knot in her hair really that bad? Quiet reflection over the scene she had just observed in her small mirror said yes, it was. In order to have gotten her hair that tangled in the pin, it had to be bad. That didn’t meant her mess of hair was saintly by any means. There were always problems with it, from knotting to having it get caught on clothes or jacket zippers. Something always happened with it, and no matter how much she tried to straighten it out or comb it, the mass of waves came back and matted themselves back into place on her head. There were times where she contemplated chopping it all off and going short, but she didn’t like the way she looked that way, and having one less physical thing to have people stare at her for, the better.
As for getting it untangled with a charm, that was a brilliant idea. Sticking her wand up to her head to unravel the hair would have been perfect; except for the fact that she didn’t know one that would work without lighting her hair on fire or blasting it all off in one go. She shook her head, “N-Nothing comes to m-mind.” Despite Eli’s optimistic idea, he still followed her instructions and retrieved the scissors from the cabinet. His walk to and from had her racking her brain for one final time to see if there was anything left she could put together that wouldn’t destroy her hair. But by the time he was standing in front of her again, it was too late.
“N-No, I’m not,” she told him, pulling a desk chair out into an open space in the room and taking a seat on it, “Y-You are.” It wouldn’t be that much off of the ends, and it wasn’t like it wouldn’t grow back. She was more concerned that trying to do it on her own would lead to uneven ends, and having Eli do it would at least absolve her of the struggle to cut it. “J-Just keep it even all around,” she added, trying to straighten out some loose strands near where the knot was, hopefully making it less of a mess when Eli went in for the final cut.

A NIFTY CHARM SEEMED LIKE A PERFECT SOLUTION. And Eli thought Cordie looked almost hopeful before it dropped away from her expression. She didn't know any Charms. And he certainly didn't. He deflated before her very eyes, the scissors cold and damning in his hands. He'd done this to her, and he felt utterly terrible about it. Though, she didn't appear as cut up, but it made him feel no better. She was hard to read, for all he knew, she was fuming inside.
"I-!" Eli stuttered, his eyes widening as he looked at Cordie with shock and panic. "You can't let me cut your hair!" He squeaked, his eyes flickering from her serious face to the knotted tendril of her messy blonde hair. "Here, take them-" He tried to push them on to her, but it was no use. She seemed very set on this new turn of events. Eli pulled the scissors back to himself. He couldn't flat out refuse, as he'd gotten her in to this situation to begin with.
"Okay..." He swallowed roughly, adam's apple jerking in his throat as he jammed his thumbs in to the handle and separated the blades. He took the lack of hair was was holding, heavy with the badge dangling at the end. It was softer than it looked, and silky to, bar the matted mass. "Even..." He echoed, nodding his head madly as he rubbed the hair between his fingers and position the scissors around them. And then, he shut his eyes tightly, face screwed up, bracing himself as he began to slowly close the scissors above the badge. This had not been how he was taught to use scissors as a child.
