The start of a new school year was one thing Zenevieva truly enjoyed. It meant the year had reached chilly September and would soon reach Spoopy season. While Halloween wasn’t one event she actually celebrated, it was a time she could embrace her vampirism and let her little fangs out wildly. But this year was different. Extremely different. Her mother and father were gone. They could no longer watch their baby-girl grow but instead their aunt would be doing that job for them.
Hogwarts was one place the Novell girl heard many stories of – from not only her mother who once attended the school but even her father; who once played there for Quidditch matches. I.e. the way he met her mother. Though, most of the Novell family was housed into Hufflepuff or Gryffindor, Zenevieva was the odd one out. After moving to London before her sixth year, her aunt had contacted the school and arranged a sorting for the youngest Novell. Zenevieva was sorted into Ravenclaw for her wittiness and intelligence but still somehow felt out of place.
Though the time that Zenevieva moved to London, she still had a small amount of time before her fifth year was over – but the professors from Ilvermorny and even Hogwarts allowed it – allowing her to mourn and start fresh for her sixth. Now as she sat within the courtyard of Hogwarts on that chilly October day, a book in her hands and her robes holding her warmth together, the brunette’s eyes lifted every so often as new sounds of more students entering the courtyard caught her attention.
But one particular person led to Zen pushing her book down to her knees, the red stripes on his robes resulted with the Novell cocking a brow – she knew Gryffindor was known for being daring, but when was he ever? While Zenevieva couldn’t remember his name, his face never left her mind. She knew he was the same individual from Ilvermorny, the same one who stood there and watched her get picked on – watched as other students cast a glitter charm on Zenevieva so she sparkled.
While her lips didn’t open to call out in his direction, she truly did want Daniel to notice her. She was curious about where he had been, as he had left before her. Curious to know if he knew anyone else who was transferred to Hogwarts after Ilvermorny’s collapse. Zenevieva had so many questions but had no plans of asking them. She was quiet, kept to herself – not loud and nosey.
Why change now?

Seventh year hadn’t started off as terrible as Daniel had assumed it would. With most of the Ilvermorny student body coming to start at hogwarts for the school year he didn’t feel as as alone as he had last year. Partly that was his fault, Daniel didn’t give many people or this school a chance last year but he was still angry about moving. Angry at his father also for forcing this all upon him. Yet it would appear even if he hadn’t moved a year before everyone else he would have ended up at hogwarts like the rest of them. He had the few people he had decided to call friends from hogwarts this year now on top of the people he knew from Ilvermorny. He was less moody about it all and felt like he could finally enjoy this school yet. It was depressing that Daniel wouldn’t be spending his last year at the school he considered home but all of the Ilvermorny seventh years were in that same boat.
Daniel normally avoided the courtyard most days, it was nice enough but he normally had somewhere to be. Today he didn’t have much of a rush or a class to get to. It also was beginning to get cold and that was reason enough to be outside. Daniel enjoyed the cold weather as long as it wasn’t too cold. Walking through the courtyard Daniel began to feel like he was being watched, a feeling that wasn’t always right but he still looked around anyway. He hadn’t noticed anyone at first and went back to looking forward till he did a double take. Seeing someone familiar at least looking his way. Daniel couldn’t just keep walking by now as he smiled for a moment and changed direction.
“So you’re a Ravenclaw sparkles? Makes sense with you and your book.” Daniel teased for a moment as he finally got closer to Zen, it had been well over a year since he last saw her but he couldn’t really forget meeting her. The poor girl was a quiet one and people liked to pick on her back at Ilvermorny, even going to far as to put a glitter charm on her. Which is why he had started to call her by the nickname. Daniel probably should have done something but he just watched a laughed when it happened. Daniel did ensure the people who charmed her did get a well deserved prank in return to make up for it even if Zen didn’t know that. “How Hogwarts been treating you so far?”

Sparkles was one thing Zenevieva hated to hear. The nickname began by the familiar figure in Ilvermorny when a bunch of bullies performed a glitter charm on her as a way to get a reaction from her. Luckily enough the only reaction they got was a cry for help on the inside and an immediate dash to the bathroom to avoid anymore embarrassment As Daniel spoke to her, she bit onto her lip, unsure of how to respond at first until the words came to mind, especially with the comment of her book. ”My book and I have been treated fine so far.” she stated vaguely, tugging at the spine of her book to close it lightly.
Her green eyes looked up at the elder boy, noticing the changes in him from now and a year ago. Some small changes but quite noticeable over all. His hair looked longer while his face seemed more mature. He also seemed to be lonelier with more freedom to him. But these were all assumptions, things that Zenevieva created quite often. ”I had no idea…Ilvermorny was destroyed.” she admitted as she scanned the courtyards surroundings. ”Nor did I have any idea of the amount of students it had too.”
Zenevieva pushed some of her light brunette locks behind her ear, stretching out her legs across the area she sat on. It felt weird to be speaking to someone she barely knew from her old school – but the familiarity also brought a smile to her face. Though she had caused no trouble yet in Hogwarts, Zenevieva was still a lonely person, using books as her means of escaping from conversations and people in general. ”You don’t know if…Bianca is here…Do you?” Bianca and her crew of friends were people Zen truly wanted to avoid, considering a few of Bianca’s friends were the ones who cast the glitter charm on her.

The newly transferred Ravenclaw explained how she had been treated fine as well as her book so far. While he didn’t make it obvious it was good to hear Zen hadn’t found any bullying yet. Hogwarts was much the same at Ilvermorny in that regard. Daniel hadn’t seen too much of it but knew that it happened. While cruel at times and funny at others rarely it was just a thing that happened with students. Daniel kept to himself enough over the last year to see the groups of students and how they reacted to one another. He was new enough and people didn’t know about him to leave him alone for the most part. “That’s good to hear. If you hadn’t been there is always a professor to talk to or the more fun approach. I learned a curse that makes people say ridiculously embarrassing things recently.” Daniel explained mostly kidding as he figured Zen wasn’t the type for something like that.
Daniel couldn’t help but laugh just a little as Zen said Ilvermorny had been destroyed. As far as he knew from the papers and what people told him it wasn’t that bad. “I don’t think it’s destroyed, just unsafe for students to be there while it’s being repaired. Foundation damage or whatever, sounds like it’ll probably be fixed by next year, at the very most two years.” At least that was the impression Daniel got from the reports of the damages on his old school. “Also you probably didn’t notice all the other students because you always have your nose in some book.”
Zen seemed to get comfortable for a moment then asked about Bianca, she was at Hogwarts as well. Daniel attempted to not laugh for a moment knowing why she had asked about the girl. “Sadly yes, as well as Katherine. They’re both in Slytherin which you might have guessed is where Hogwarts likes to stick many of its jerk students.” He finally laughed finishing explaining as it did seem to be partly the case with the houses of Hogwarts on more than one occasion. “Still if they have any sense they’ll be more focused on studying for the exams than looking for someone to mess with.”

The Novell had heard similar things while in Ilvermorny, that a teacher would always be there for her, to explain her problems and find some reasoning to understand and even possibly fight against her bullies but Zen never took the chance to. Instead she kept quiet and somewhat allowed the bullying to happen. From one moment she was even able to make friends with someone else who was subject to Katherine and Bianca’s cruel actions and words. But even so, there were many times when Zenevieva wished she could just…speak up for herself, or even defend herself. So when Daniel mentioned of the curse he had learned, it peeked at the brunette’s interest. ”Really?” She questioned, looking up at him with slight widened eyes. ”Could you…teach me?”
Zenevieva found herself shrugging. From the exaggeration of her friends and family and the things she had heard from her friends who had also transferred to Hogwarts, Ilvermorny was pretty much destroyed in her eyes. Even though Zen was in the other castle for most of her school education, she somehow always found it to be rather plain in comparison to Hogwarts – it was missing a certain touch. But if Daniel’s words were true, did that mean all the students would head back to Ilvermorny? In Zen’s case it didn’t necessarily matter as soon she would be in Seventh year and eventually graduate but it would surely confuse younger students. ”Hey.” She responded, her lips curving into a pout. ”Books are pretty interesting…They help to clear your mind.”
A small laugh escaped Zen’s lips with Daniel’s joke and although it seemed to be rather true, the same couldn’t be said for her friend: Kaylee. Kaylee was a funny but innocent person with no thread of her even remotely being jerk-y or evil yet she had fallen into Slytherin. ”I guess.” Zen murmured, in a response to his statement, but somehow she knew the two bullies would somehow pull some strings in order to mess with people. It was just simply in their nature. ”How…” Zen began before clearing her throat and finding her words. ”How has Hogwarts treated you?” In the midst of thinking of what to say, she knew she wanted to stir up some kind of conversation with the Gryffindor, even if the two weren’t close back in Ilvermorny.

It was interesting that Zen actually seemed to want to learn the curse he was talking about. It would have been even more interesting if she was planning to use it, either as a defense against a bully or as revenge. He highly doubted the latter but who knew what one could do sometimes. “Sure, it’s not that complicated.” Daniel replied with a shrug willing to teach her no matter the reason she wanted to learn. “Why do you want to learn it anyway? Going to go teach someone a lesson?” He asked mostly in a joking manner but he was curious none the less. Daniel laughed for a moment as Zen pouted slightly as she joked about her and her books. It wasn’t a bad thing to always be reading he just liked to bring it up and have a quick laugh. “Which is why you’re a Ravenclaw now. I hear their whole common room is one big library.” He explained only having heard rumors of it but he could only imagine it was true. If any house was the bookish one it was them. “Books don’t do much for clearing my thoughts which is probably more of statement of who I am rather than the books.” With a laugh he finished speaking for a moment, books could be interesting at times but there weren’t many that held Daniels attention for long.
Zen partly agreed with him about Slytherin and he just laughed. “It’s hard to say it’s not true. There are some exceptions but for the most part they all seemed to be pains in the butt.” Daniel could count the number of Slytherins he had enjoyed being around on one hand probably right now. Granted he wasn’t sure why he was placed in Gryffindor either but never questioned it. Hogwarts houses weren’t something he had concerned him when he first came to this school. “I’m still alive,” Daniel said absentmindedly realizing only after that people had died last year after all. “How was your Ilvermorny last year, anyone give you any trouble?”

When questioned on her reasoning for learning such a strange but funny curse, Zenevieva felt her lips purse slightly, lost in thought. She wasn’t exactly a vengeful person, nor did she enjoy a ton of chaos. But with the things her friend Eli would pull her into, knowing something to help defend herself one day would be…Useful. ”Something like that.” The brunette responded, the book in her lap completely closed as she gave the elder Gryffindor her attention. The smile on her lips was one filled with a hidden intention, but if he offered, why should she refuse?
With a laugh, the Novell found herself nodding in response to his statement. While somewhat true, Ravenclaw still had good qualities about it – especially a certain spot in the comfiest sofa by the fireplace. In the short time Zen had been in Hogwarts, she had discovered many safe places for herself and places where she felt most comfortable in. The common room definitely being one of them. ”There’s books everywhere…Yes. But not as bad as the actual Hogwarts library.” She clarified as she looked up at him from where she sat. ”You’re just not a book person.” She remarked, pushing herself up to stand by his side. ”That’s…Not essentially a bad thing.”
Again, Zenevieva found herself nodding in a response to him. Daniel wasn’t exactly wrong when he mentioned it – there was truthfully only a handful of Slytherins who had pure, nice intentions. Even some of the people the Novell had met from other houses, deserved to be in Slytherin for their bad-jerk-like behaviours. ”They’re all usually…irritating.” Minus Kaylee. She was an enjoyable-irritating person. She always called out on the half-vampire’s love for sweaters and the colour blue. Although, when Daniel responded to her question about his own well-being, Zen was sure he didn’t notice his comment and how bleak it was in relation to the recent events around them. She didn’t comment on it, but instead her eyes slightly narrowed before looking down at the ground.
”N-Not…Really.” Things were as normal as ever before the Novell left, her daily insults and comments from the likes of Bianca and Katherine as well as reassurance and pick me ups from Eli. But as of lately, things felt different – especially since Zen hadn’t seen her bullies. Not yet anyway. The troubles the Novell faced were more personal, which evidentially led to her being transferred to Hogwarts earlier. It was just a coincidence that Ilvermorny seemed to follow her.

Daniel laughed as Zen in a way confirmed that she might use it for some type of revenge. It didn’t seem like her to him but what did Daniel really know about Zen anyway. They had talked regularly before but it wasn’t anything deep. What if deep down she had been plotting some type of revenge against her bullies. No, he doubted that even if he didn’t know her that well. “Well, as long as I’m not on the receiving end it sounds like fun.” Daniel joked while it would be in interesting twist if he was hit with curse he had actually taught someone. There probably wouldn't be much time after being hit to think of the irony, that would come much later. “There are plenty of empty class rooms here so we can always find the time and a place.” Zen confirmed that there were a number of books in the Ravenclaw common room like Daniel had imagined but it wasn’t like that library. “I haven’t attempted to sneak my way in so I wouldn’t know, just rumors and a guess. Glad to know I was partly right.” He nodded as Zen got up from her seat while explaining that he wasn’t a book person but that wasn’t such a bad thing. “Well we can’t all be book people. Some people have to do the stuff that get put into books... which won’t be me but still.” He laughed as Daniel already knew he wasn’t the type of person who was going to get into a book about anything. He wasn’t even sure what type of person he was at times. “You can use strong words than irritating if you want, you’re among friends.” Daniel explained jokingly as Zen called most Slytherins irritating, which to Daniel was definitely an understatement. Zen said not really when asked if people have her trouble last year. Which Daniel took as it had still happened like it used to before. He felt a little bad but he didn’t let that show. ”Well you’ve got a whole new school to make better friends and avoid the people you dislike, just make sure you don’t hide too much to the point I can never find you.”Daniel laughed as Hogwarts had enough hiding spots that people could possibly disappear for days before being found if they wanted. zenevieva mira novell

Zenevieva knew that taking curse advice from Daniel was perhaps not the best thing to do during a school day. But in order to have some kind of advantage over her bullies, the half-vampire decided she simply wanted to know. ”I wouldn’t want to hurt my mentor.” She smiled innocently. ”Unless you’d let me use it on your for practice that is…” It felt nice to actually joke for once in her life, alongside someone that simply didn’t intimidate the Novell. ”O-Only if that’s okay! I don’t want to take up too much of your time.” She somewhat muttered, green eyes looking around - looking away from him.
”S-Sneak in?” She repeated, eyes widening in surprise. The only Common rooms Zen had ever found herself in was Horned Serpent’s back in Ilvermorny and Ravenclaw’s. But she had heard things from Kaylee about how different Slytherin’s common room was in comparison to Ilvermorny’s. Though, Zen would’ve never suspected other people sneaked into other people’s Common rooms. Then again, she didn’t know everyone. With a quiet laugh, Zen nodded in agreement. ”If you’re not a book lover…Or a risk taker…Then where do you lie?” She asked. The brunette definitely knew her place in the social life at school. Quiet. Nerd. Half-blood. Vampire.
But when Daniel stated how she could use stronger words, Zen shook her head. The brunette wasn’t the kind of person to use strong or…foul words. It felt unnatural - at least in her case anyway. With a shrug, Zen began: ”I’m not…A stronger words kind of person” She admitted, pushing her hair behind her ear, her left hand gripping onto the book a little tighter. ”I suppose so…I’ve met a few people…Sari Fawley being one.” And God was that Hufflepuff a talkative girl. When Daniel mentioned how he didn’t want her to hide so he couldn’t find her, she laughed softly. ”I’ll try not to…hide.” It was always nice to spend more time with someone that could make her laugh and smile. ”I’ll make the effort to find you more often then.”

Daniel laughed as Zen suggested that he might want to be used as her target for practice. “Not necessarily but I suppose you would need an actual target just to make sure you’re doing it right.” Daniel thought for a moment not really wanting to be that target yet not sure where they could find another. “I suppose so unless you want to follow around one of your bullies and try casting it on them till it works.” He laughed once more as that would be one way yet the chances are high someone would notice them and it would cause some trouble. He suspected he would end up being the guinea pig. Zen agreed to the little curse training session but only if it was okay with him and didn’t take up too much of his time. “It’s not like my time is in high demand at the moment. I don’t do much else besides classwork, barely study and wander the school.” Zen asked about sneaking in to a common room and Daniel shrugged slightly. “I haven’t tried but it’s possibly from what people say.” At least that’s what he thought, those rumors all could have been a lie just to get people in trouble. “The common room security isn’t really that tight, I don’t know who protects the ravenclaw common room but Gryffindor just has a portrait. As long as you know the password or your with someone who knows it you’re able to get in.” Still he wasn’t exactly sure but they didn’t seem to be that secure to Daniel. Zen asked where Daniel was between a book lover or risk taker and he didn’t really have an answer. “Not sure honestly, I’m just doing whatever seems right at the moment.”
“You just need practice is all.” Daniel teased for a moment as Zen claimed she wasn’t the type to use stronger words. Something he wasn't completely surprised about. Even if they hadn’t talked that much he couldn’t think of a time where she had even come close to swearing. Zen agreed with him, even naming another girl she knew. At least it appeared Zen was making some friends which was good. Better than he had done his first year at Hogwarts. “I haven’t met her but if you like her then she can’t be too bad.” Daniel replied with a small laugh that followed as there were many names he hadn’t heard from the hogwarts student body. “ I’ll be counting on it, this school is hard enough just trying to find a class room, let alone another student who likes to hide away with her books.”

Knowing that she would pick up something against her enemies, Zen couldn’t help but giggle. Just from talking to the Gryffindor now, Daniel had the tendency to say silly but funny things, leading onto Zen then saying: ”In that case I promise not to cast it too terribly.” Usually curses pronounced or even the wrong action brought the worst kind of results. At least that was something she had read from her Charms textbooks. ”I don’t think randomly casting and failing and even potentially…getting caught is one thing I don’t want.” She laughed, knowing that Daniel would eventually be her test subject. Nudging him gently, Zen looked up at him. ”Studying is important.” She rolled her eyes, knowing that he probably wouldn’t listen.
Sneaking into a different house’s common room was one thing Zen knew she wouldn’t do. Taking risks or falling into chaos wasn’t particularly the Novell’s favourite thing to do and even taking up Daniel’s offer on his curse-training rose the hairs on her arms. In comparison to Gryffindor, each time Zen wanted to enter the common room, she was presented with a riddle by the Eagle knocker, which replaced the usual appearance of a common doorknob. If answered incorrect, you had to wait for someone to answer it correctly. In a way it sounded like the Gryffindor’s means of entering - although, Gryffindor’s form of entering sounded a lot cooler. ”That’s so cool…” She trailed off, smiling at his response to her earlier question. ”I think you’re a little bit of both. Maybe just a bigger risk taker.”
Nodding, Zen took in a short breath - feeling rather embarrassed. Words were her strongest thing in writing but her worst thing to rely while speaking. ”I…Don’t hide away!” She responded, grinning at his tease. It was somewhat of a coincidence that Zen holed herself up in empty classes or random locations around Hogwarts. She didn’t exactly have many friends either. ”But speaking of class…I need to head off now.” She told him. ”Thanks…For making me feel better.” With the book against her chest, the half-vampire slightly waved in his direction, turning so she headed out of the Courtyard, an afternoon of Potions waiting for her.
