September 2, 2024 Monday. Kaylee had felt her heart pounding in her chest all day, her first day of classes at Hogwarts. She couldn't recall having felt so apprehensive before, except when she had started at Ilvermorny. Everything at Hogwarts seemed so large and frightening, and she stuck close to the people she knew in the corridors to avoid getting turned around. The Hogwarts students had no trouble finding the shortcuts, but she felt as though she had no choice but to cram in with everyone else in the most crowded parts of the castle.
She had been jostled around enough by lunchtime that all that she wanted was some peace and quiet. Returning to her dormitory was one option, but she would have to go back to classes by the time she had gotten there.
Instead, she peered into the nearest classroom she could, not seeing anyone inside upon cracking open the door. She looked first at the writing on the chalkboard and realized that it must have been the History of Magic classroom. Her favorite subject, and she had come upon it by chance.
She stepped beyond the door and farther into the classroom, turning her head to look around and ultimately jumping at what—or whom—she saw sitting there. "Zen?!" It was definitely her, Zenieveva, her former classmate from Horned Serpent who had been Sorted into Ravenclaw, to her knowledge.

Zenevieva had been at Hogwarts since the start of her sixth year after leaving Ilvermorny mid-fifth due to the death of both of her parents alongside the moving to London and the continuous adapting life with her aunt Adèle. At the time, she had no clue that Hogwart’s doors were open and welcoming the students of her previous school Ilvermorny and it wasn’t until she saw Daniel when it confirmed it all. The thought of her old bullies walking in the same halls as her had churned Zenevieva’s stomach and somehow made her feel incredibly weak – even as a half-vampire. Though as the weeks passed and her anxiety relaxed a little, the Novell girl felt freer and more open to do things.
Like walk into an empty class she had already prepared for with a book in what the current class was based on while everyone enjoyed their last moments of lunch. How rebellious. Taking a seat in one of the far areas of the class, Zen adjusted her robes; allowing her to sit comfortably while placing her book in the desk in front of her. With the book now resting there, blue eyes scanned each page, picking out details especially around important dates that the Novell would expect to be questioned on. Though it’s not like she’d answer said questions anyway.
As Zenevieva focused on her book, she barely noticed the other presence in the room until her name was called out, resulting with a whip of brunette hair looking upwards and directly at the exit. ”Kaylee?” she called back, almost certain it was her. Zen stood, her book slammed shut with a gentle push at the spine before she made her way down the steps towards her friend. Her brow furrowed at the dark shades of green on her robes, as in her opinion Kaylee seemed to fit Hufflepuff just a tad more. This and besides the fact that one of her bullies resided in Slytherin. ”It’s actually…You!” She said out of surprise, pulling her friend into a gentle hug.

"Kaylee?" Zen didn't seem entirely certain that it was her, standing there in the same classroom with her again. The now-Ravenclaw made her way over to her from where she had been seated, in apparent shock. "It's actually… you!"
"Yeah," Kaylee laughed lightly, squeezing Zenieveva back. "It's me." She had made it to Hogwarts with everyone else who had come from Ilvermorny, and she had even stayed at the Leaky Cauldron for most of the summer with her brother and sister. "I don't really know how my parents managed to make it happen," she smiled after a moment, shaking her head, "but I'm here!" She was already planning to get a summer job once she got back to America; it would be the least she could do to thank her parents for sacrificing so much to allow her and her eldest two siblings to continue their educations in Britain.
"You're in Ravenclaw, right? With Ellie?" Kaylee asked excitedly, glad that Zen had Ellie Nottingham's company, even if she didn't. "Ashley got Sorted into Slytherin with me, though," she commented, her tone slightly bitter that she had wound up in the same House as her rival… again. A little break from Ashley Fontaine would have been nice. "I mean, I don't think we'll kill each other," Kaylee noted hopefully, not completely joking about that, "but, y'know." She shrugged her shoulders. Having put up with Ashley for so many years, it was just proof that some things never changed.

Zenevieva held a wide grin upon her lips – her friend…was actually here? Exciting! She knew of the transfers of Ilvermorny students but considering the financial situation of her good friend’s parents, she was surprised they were able to wow their daughter again. Zen had an incredible high respect for Kaylee’s family who were generally good people, who treated Zen as a normal human being, not a half-human, half-vampire, thing. In a way, Kaylee’s parents attitude towards her had reminded her of her aunts, who was always extremely comfortable around both Zen and her mother, even during the time of the month where Zenevieva needed to feed.
”How have you found it so far?” She questioned, a comfortable smile still resting on her lips. While the two of them were in the same year, Zenevieva knew the start of the year would’ve been different for both of them entirely. Zen had transferred because of personal issues – i.e. becoming a orphan, while Kaylee had been forced due to the recent events at Ilvermorny. Zenevieva found herself nodding in response to Kaylee’s question before her eyes widened. ”Ellie’s in Ravenclaw?” The Novell truly had no clue – she hadn’t seen anyone for months, surely there were changes to them.
While still attending Ilvermorny, when the two of them became friends Kaylee had introduced Zen to her other friends which also included Ellie, though both Zen and Kaylee knew that Zen felt most comfortable around Kaylee than anyone else anyway. The brunette pushed some of her locks behind her ear with a free hand as she laughed lightly, the comment of Kaylee’s rival being stuck by her once more intriguing her. ”You may want to kill her eventually.” Zen stated, shrugging as a joke.
In the few months that Zen had attended Hogwarts for, she was sure she was meant to see Kaylee much earlier. But why hadn’t she? Soon, Zen found herself speaking her thoughts aloud asking the very same question: ”Why didn’t I see you when the term started? Or no kind of Owl from you?” If the Novell had any idea that her friend would be attending Hogwarts, she would’ve firstly – freaked out – and secondly prepared to somehow crack her social egg just to impress her friend.

"How have you found it so far?"
Hogwarts was good—overwhelming and scary and a part of her wished that she could go back to Massachusetts, if not home to Hawaii—but good. She hadn't completely embarrassed herself, which Kaylee was going to consider a win for her for the day. She also hadn't gotten completely lost anywhere while trying to find her classes, so it could have been worse. "It's good. I mean, I don't really know what I was expecting when I got here, but it's good. I've liked my classes so far, and most people here seem… pretty nice."
That Zen didn't realize that Ellie was in Ravenclaw left Kaylee both a little perplexed and a little concerned. "Yeah," Kaylee commented, her voice trailing off, "didn't you see her at the feast last night?" (And was Zen not in her dormitory after that?)
Zen's suggestion that she might want to kill Ashley eventually was a little harsh. Kaylee wouldn't have doubted it if Ashley thought that Zen, being a half-vampire, would be more likely to kill her. "I didn't mean it literally," Kaylee corrected, "but Ashley always has to be 'Little Miss Perfect Ashley Fontaine'." Kaylee accompanied her comment with quotation marks that she made with her fingers as she spoke. Ashley had been trying to outdo her for years and showed no signs of stopping now.
"Why didn’t I see you when the term started? Or no kind of owl from you?" Zen suddenly asked her.
It was valid, and Kaylee cringed a little at her own incompetence. She genuinely felt bad that she hadn't contacted Zenieveva over the summer or even once they had gotten to school the previous night, especially since she had to wonder if anyone else from Ilvermorny had bothered. She had been busy, sure, but that wasn't an excellent excuse for not even writing to her. "If–If it makes you feel any better," she hesitated, "I didn't talk to Ellie all summer, either…" They had only caught up with one another on the train to school, though it had been as though they'd never been apart.

A smile lightly touched the Novell girl’s lips as she listened to her friend. While Zen herself had an awkward settling in the new school she was glad that her friend had it easier. Kaylee was more of a social butterfly than Zenevieva so she knew that Kaylee would perhaps have a whirl of a time. ”That’s good!” Zen smiled, genuinely happy for her friend. ”What classes are you enjoying most? Or your favourite professor?”
Zenevieva then found herself shrugging lightly. In all truthfulness, Zenevieva always roamed the Hogwarts school until the curfew fell into place. The room she shared with many other Ravenclaw female students but never had a chance to really talk to many of them. Curse her social anxiety. But the sound of a feast caught Zen’s attention. ”Feast? What feast?” Had Zen missed out on an important announcement from the school or something? From Zen’s memory she only recalled staying in her dorm or one of her favourite empty classrooms reading in the dark. The light didn’t necessarily bother her half-vampire eyes but she felt more better in the dark.
A laugh left the brunette’s lips while she held onto her sides. Ashley was always the kind of person to never back down from a challenge or a fight – something Zen knew Kaylee had to endure her entire life alongside the Fontaine girl. ”I know. I was just kidding.” She stated softly. ”But that’s just Ashley for you.” Zen shrugged once more, before tugging at her own robes gently, a question on the back of her mind; but her lips twitched gently – unsure if she should ask it. ”Who…Who else is in Slytherin with you? Or around anyway…” Please don’t be Katherine. Or Bianca. Zenevieva thought to herself, frowning at the memories of the both of them.
Zen sighed, understanding that things must of been chaotic for her friend. She knew that while she had been able to leave in the midst of her fifth year for her own personal problems, everybody else had to suffer with the transfer process because of the vandalism caused. "It makes me feel...Slightly better." Zen responded, a smile on her lips once more. It didn't really matter as of now, both Zen and Kaylee were together once more, so Zen could begin to forgive her. One conversation at a time. "You just have to tell me everything that happened." The Novell requested. "Deal?"

Zen seemed to be glad that she was finding everything at Hogwarts to be good, though her next question—or questions—stumped her: "What classes are you enjoying most? Or your favorite professor?"
"Zen, you know that asking me that is like asking a parent to pick their favorite kid!" Kaylee protested. "That's too hard," and unfair when she hadn't even had every one of her classes once yet, "but I think History of Magic will probably still be my favorite one." Kaylee knew that her answer was biased, especially because she loved everything about the subject and wanted to be a historian once she graduated from school, but it was the truth.
It was strange, thought Kaylee, that Zen seemed to know nothing at all about anything that had happened, even just the previous night. "Feast?" she asked her. "What feast?"
Wait… Was Zen kidding? Kaylee blinked. She had been at Hogwarts for all but a day, but Zen's reaction to her mentioning the feast made her feel like an expert. "The Start-of-Term Feast?" she repeated. "Where everybody got Sorted into their Hogwarts Houses last night?" She didn't think, even without the additional information, that there were many other things with which Zenevieva could have confused it.
On the other hand, Zen certainly hadn't forgotten about Ashley Fontaine, and she practically doubled over with laughter, providing Kaylee with the reassurance that she was just kidding about the death part. "But that’s just Ashley for you."
After that, though, Zen grew silent again. Kaylee watched her warily, considering how oddly she had already been behaving. Then, when she spoke, Kaylee understood Zen's concerns in an instant. She wanted to know who else was in Slytherin, but her concern wasn't about people like Ellie. There had been a number of other students who had tormented her when she was still at Ilvermorny. Kaylee had no doubt in her mind that Zen's question had been about them, the people and the places she would have to avoid.
Kaylee tried to relay what she could to the best of her ability. She didn't want Zen to be miserable. "Katherine is in Slytherin," she thought, trying to recall who all had been at the Slytherin table the previous night, "and Bianca… and Ashley's brother, Joe… and my own brother, but he doesn't count." Kaylee rolled her eyes teasingly, as she tried to end on a positive note. Her brother, in the year below theirs, had gone from Wampus to Slytherin. Her sister, two years younger than they, had gone from Pukwudgie to Ravenclaw. "My sister's in Ravenclaw, so you might see her around," and who else had been Sorted when they had? There had been a handful of other new students whom Kaylee hadn't recognized at all, too. It was admittedly difficult to keep track of everyone now.
Even though she hadn't kept up with Zen all summer, either, Kaylee felt thankful that the now-Ravenclaw didn't seem as crushed as she could have been. Kaylee hadn't been exaggerating when she had mentioned not having talked to Ellie Nottingham all summer. "You just have to tell me everything that happened," Zen requested of her. "Deal?"
"Deal!" Kaylee grinned. "I can tell you now, if you have time?"

The smile that rested on the Novell's lips soon released a soft giggle, especially after Kaylee’s jokes and protests. A giggle from Zen’s own lips was extremely rare, but it peaked through at times with her friends. ”That’s a biased choice.” Zen pointed out, her eyes narrowing as she knew exactly the reason for it. Kaylee never shut up about her future job at times. But the smile that rested on the Novell girl’s lips soon fell into a frown, especially when the stupidity struck her mind.
”Oh.” Was all she said, her thumbs fiddling with one another. As the brunette had technically enrolled within her fifth year, the Novell was invited to have a private sorting – thus leading to the result of Zen falling into the Ravenclaw house. That along with the fact she was terrified to attend the ceremony. While it wasn’t especially necessary for her considering she had already been housed – the Novell wanted to support her friends who were waiting anxiously but ended up refusing to go. Instead she stayed around the library while the rest of the students had fun.
Although, Zen found herself nodding once more as Kaylee mentioned where her…bullies were housed, mentally note-taking to be cautious around the grounds – to avoid a bumping into. ”That’s great.” Zen breathed out, a small smile struggling to remain on her lips. ”It’s been a while since I’ve seen her too.”
When Kaylee questioned if the Novell girl had any free time to explain all that had went down, Zenevieva found herself nodding intensely, her hands reaching out for Kaylee’s in excitement. She pulled her friend into the direction of the high chairs, into the corner where Zen had rested comfortably, reading her book before plopping back into the seat she had sat in. ”We both have time.” It was true, class wasn’t for another half-hour or so.

In spite of Zen's confusion over the Sorting and hesitancy when it came to her past bullies, Kaylee was glad that Zen was excited to hear about how the summer had been. In fact, the Ravenclaw practically pulled her over as she dragged her over to where she had been sitting with her book before.
"We both have time."
Kaylee sat down quickly, positioning herself so that she was facing Zenevieva.
"Okay, so… I guess I should start from the beginning, right?" Kaylee laughed. It almost seemed easier to go in reverse, since there was so much that had happened over the summer. "My siblings and I came here almost as soon as we could," she said, "which was kind of cool but also super awkward because we basically lived in a room at the Leaky Cauldron all summer." Most of the other people she knew had come with their parents or had other people to stay with.
"So we were there, and, um, we didn't really do too much exciting. We were mostly just getting our stuff for school and trying to figure everything out about living here." It had been more difficult than she had expected. "Just kind of exploring Diagon Alley and stuff like that. I got to play my ukulele some—I brought it with me. It's in my room. I totally need to drag it out to the grounds sometime—and, um, that was about it for a while. But Gilderoy—Do you know him? I think he's a Ravenclaw—had a beach party in July." It easily had been the highlight of her summer.
"I think he invited most of the school, like… I don't even know whose beach house we were at, but it was so much fun." Kaylee quickly realized how that must have sounded. "Nothing crazy happened, I swear!" Kaylee assured Zen, laughing again. "It was really cool to get to know people," she clarified. "I even got to meet Anna Weasley, the girl from the Triwizard Tournament last year." She had been really nice, as had been the guy who was with her.
"I didn't even get in the water, though. Some people did, but it was so grey and cold. The beaches here aren't like the ones at home at all. Oh, Merlin, I can't wait until I'm back on the beach at home. It's going to feel so good."

"The beginning would most likely be best" Zenevieva began, the smile that seemed to be rare amongst most people resting comfortably on her lips as her body turned to face her friend. As Kaylee began, Zen found herself with widened eyes, nodding to the stories that her friend recalled. "Did your parents come with?" She questioned in regards to the move to the Leaky Cauldron. But when the topic of Gilderoy Jr and the beach party arose, Zen shifted in her seat slightly.
"Gilderoy...As in Prefect Gilderoy?" Zenevieva soon nodded in response, she knew of him but had never actually spoken to him. But the Novell was sure that Kaylee already knew of that. The Lockhart family was one family Zen had always been interested in because of the novels that Gilderoy Sr had written. Upon the many books Zenevieva had stored in her collection, the novels by Gilderoy Sr were always her favourite. "You're super lucky..." Though she couldn't help but let a smile touch her lips as mentions of the beach came up. Zenevieva was always so unfortunate with sunny summers, especially being a half vampire, she was prone to sunburns rather than to enjoy herself.
"Are the beaches...nice?" Zen personally had never gone to a beach as she wanted to avoid the stares and murmurs of her pale skin along with her shyness to wear a bathing suit.

It was weird to explain her entire summer for the beginning for someone she hadn't seen in so long, but it felt really good, too, to catch up on those months in between—or at least a few of them. "Did your parents come with?"
Kaylee shook her head. "No, no. It would be too hard for my dad," she said, considering her ex-Auror father's prosthetic legs, "and too expensive, since my younger brothers would probably have to come if my mom came, and… yeah." There was just too much to work out to make it feasible on such short notice. It was a little bit frustrating at times not to have their parents there, like some of their classmates had had, especially since she wouldn't be seventeen until October.
"Gilderoy… As in Prefect Gilderoy?"
Kaylee shrugged but guessed that it was Prefect Gilderoy. She didn't think there was more than just the one Gilderoy at Hogwarts, though she didn't know who the other Houses' prefects were yet.
"You're super lucky…" Zen smiled at her, and Kaylee realized she was right. The summer had been a little hectic, but it had been worth coming in advance in spite of the hardships.
"Are the beaches… nice?"
"The beaches at home? They're amazing," Kaylee sighed dreamily. They were paradise. "The ones the tourists don't go to, I mean." She didn't need Waikiki, especially not when it meant dealing with such unbearable crowds. "This next summer," she told Zen, "I've got to take you. I'm serious. It'd be so much fun." Given that Zen was a half-vampire, they'd need to take some precautions, but it wasn't anything that wasn't doable with a little bit of preparation beforehand. "And you know my mom and dad would be totally cool to help out. We can find somewhere nice and put up some No-Maj-Repelling Charms, charm a large umbrella or something to float above you," she thought aloud. "We could totally make it work."

The brunette soon began to nod in understanding, a comforting but warm smile creeping up on the corners of her lips. Zen knew how Kaylee’s parents were after meeting them a couple of times while the two attended Ilvermorny. She knew her friend’s parents only wanted the best for her and her younger sister and it always gave Zenevieva a painful reminder of her own parents. Considering the Novell’s were once the same before they were met with their tragic death. ”That makes sense.” She murmured, looking away and into the darkness that surrounded them in the class. ”How…is your family? Your mom, dad?”
The sound of spending a summer away on a beach possibly burning under the rays of the sun sounded terrifying but utterly exciting to the Novell. Unlike her mother who would burn and die under the rays, Zen was simply subjected to a simple sunburn and irritation to the sun but she knew there were ways to avoid being burnt – ways she hadn’t just discovered just yet. ”I’d like that.” she responded, a beaming smile sitting comfortably on her lips. The sound of a floating umbrella following the Novell’s every move resulted with a laugh leaving her lips, her pale hand lifting and settling in front of her mouth as she did so. ”That would be pretty cool…And terrifying.”
Zenevieva knew she wouldn’t want to make her vampirism known amongst other wizards or even muggles too easily, but the price of being a half-vampire was met with many disadvantages and weakness. ”Tell me more.” She pleaded, her hands resting on her friends; squeezing her fingers lightly as her eyes filled with interest.

As she explained the reasoning behind only her and the two eldest of her four siblings' coming to Britain, Zen agreed with her that it made sense and then asked after her family, and her parents in particular. "They're good," she nodded. Aside from their having to send their three oldest children to another country for school, things at home had been pretty normal.
Zen seemed more receptive to the idea of visiting Hawaii over the summer than Kaylee had anticipated, which she took as a good thing. "I'd like that," Zen beamed at her, and she didn't seem to mind the umbrella proposal, either.
"Tell me more," Zen requested of her as she reached over and squeezed her hand.
"I mean, it's just a thought, but I don't see why it couldn't totally happen." The only expensive part of the whole thing, Kaylee imagined, would be getting Zen out to Hawaii, since she and her siblings would have to come back home after the year was over. Wait… That was right. Zen hadn't transferred to Hogwarts temporarily like the rest of them had; she had been living with her aunt before starting school. "Assuming that everything with Ilvermorny is back to normal by this time next year," Kaylee continued with hesitation, "I'm going to have to go back home, and—Oh my gosh, I did not mean to make this so sad!" That hadn't been her intention at all, and she was determined to recover it.
"My point is," Kaylee went on, "this is going to be our year, but I'm gonna have to go home at some point, and you can't go without getting the full experience of paradise at least once. Preferably with a local."

The mention of Ilvermorny rang bells in Zenevieva’s mind. It reminded her that the damage caused to the Wizarding school was only temporary and soon would be repaired – allowing all of its students to return. But Zenevieva knew she wouldn’t be one of those students. While she transferred and entered Hogwarts as the same time as everyone else, Zen’s transfer was permanent, considering changes to guardians and whatnot. At first, it didn’t bother Zen as she was leaving her friends behind but this time she knew they would be leaving her behind. At least in a year or so.
”I’m sure my aunt wouldn’t mind it.” Even though Zenevieva had moved in with her aunt, money didn’t seem to be a problem in the Novell household, considering the home her aunt Adèle owned as well as the home Zenevieva once lived in, definitely no problem there. The brunette smiled softly at Kaylee’s apology and shook her head gently. ”It’s okay. You didn’t make it sad at all.” But Zen nodded shortly after, sending another comforting squeeze through her friend’s hand. ”That’s fine by me. Whenever you go, I’ll be right there with you. Even if I burn.” The last part of Zen’s response was merely a joke, reflected by the smile on her face and the giggle that left her lips but she wanted to just reassure her friend.

Zen told her that she didn't think that her aunt would mind. Kaylee, who hadn't met the woman, but she was glad to hear that she probably wouldn't have an issue with her niece's friend's taking her to Hawaii for a visit. Even considering that they probably wouldn't get to spend their last year of school in one another's company, Zen said that she hadn't made their conversation sad with the comments about how they would likely have to part ways at the school year's end.
"Whenever you go, I’ll be right there with you. Even if I burn," Zen promised her with a giggle.
Kaylee took the Ravenclaw's hand and squeezed it back. "We've done some really stupid stuff together over the years, but I won't let you burn!" she laughed as she reciprocated Zen's promise to her. "We'll buy up all the sunblock if we have to," she told her, jokingly—but not kidding if it actually did end up coming to that. "Seriously, though, whatever it takes. We're in this thing together, Zen. No matter what."
She unlinked her hand with Zenevieva's long enough to hold out her pinky finger. "I know we're getting a little old for this," Kaylee prefaced, her voice trailing as she made eye contact with Zen hopefully. "But… Pinky swear?"
