The Whomping Willow was one place Zenevieva didn’t expect to find herself nearby, especially after the trades of secrets she had heard of, so her safety was somewhat put on the line. The Willow was known for its unexpected temper, especially towards anyone that would approach its branches. Though, Zen had no intention of dying to a tree. She would rather die from sunlight, even if she only sun-burned under its rays. Instead she decided to admire it from afar, her back pressed against the trunk of another tree not too far while a book rested on her thighs. Zenevieva thought as to why the bullies back in Ilvermorny hadn’t just nicknamed her that vampire-nerd. Books were the only thing that the Novell girl was found with as of lately.
While the October air felt chilly to some, the Ravenclaw girl couldn’t really understand the whines of how cold it was but still left her dorm room with a thick navy-jumper clung to her body alongside her robes. This time of year, was her favourite because of the drastic changes that occurred with the weather and the scenery around her – once bright green leaves turning into a dark orange as they fell off the trees. Although, Zenevieva also hated October because of Halloween. Back in Ilvermorny, the bullies around her would call out on her (pretty much) non-existent fangs as well as chanting things such as ’Baby Vampire!’ It was times like this Zenevieva felt cursed as she was never as intimidating as her mother – who could walk on walls for Christ’s sake.
Now in Hogwarts, Zenevieva hoped for a change, maybe a chance to actually make friends? Hogwarts was known for having more demi-humans around than other Wizarding Schools but the Novell girl still hadn’t found someone as similar as herself.
@steve & short start but i hope it works!

10.XX.2024 The sky was finally starting to muddy with gray clouds on a more consistent basis. That meant he was allowed to prowl outside during the day with less precautions. Steve had sported a mean tan during the first few weeks at Hogwarts, having been unaware that his Care of Magical Creatures class was always outside. That would have been nice if the school had warned him and Nora of that. Or maybe they had and he simply ignored it. Sometimes it was hard to tell. There were so many people stuffed into the castle, and they were infinitely more interesting than anything the teachers had to show him. At the end of all of this, he was either going back to Canada, joining his dad in his business as an alchemist, or his mother as a representative for vampires. The last one was only if he wasn’t forced to drink blood more often. That was his only stipulation when it came to being around full vampires. While his mom understood that he wasn’t on board one-hundred percent of the time with drinking, others only saw the vampire half in him. The rest was just as dirty and cloudy as the sky was right now.
His trek thus far had seen him around the Quidditch pitch and along the edge of the forest. The woods were more his thing, and it was a huge let down when he was told they were off-limits. Obviously that meant he could go in when nobody was looking, but still. Beware the dark creatures within? He was half a dark creature. That was close enough for him to count it. Steve’s reasoning was that if his name was on a list because of his vampire blood (and it was), then he was allowed to participate in activities that other dark humanoid creatures were. So that meant vampires, veelas, and werewolves. Hogwarts couldn’t stop him from being himself. If they did, they were failing with their message as a school for all.
This revelation as he rounded the edge of the forest and headed up towards the giant willow tree had him smirking. It was the perfect loophole in the system, and he was sure Nora would be down for it once he brought it up to her. That was assuming she hadn’t already ventured in on her own. Knowing her, she probably had. “Oh,” he said aloud, stopping at the foot of a tree that was suddenly in his way. There was a girl sitting under it. Steve didn’t need long in order to tell what she was. It was instinctual. “Is it your mom or your dad?” he asked, suddenly interested in this new mystery girl. He didn’t know there was another like him and Nora here.

The sound of someone’s voice made the half-vampire jump ever so slightly, the book that sat within her lap falling onto the ground and snapping shut out of instinct. Zenevieva looked up, her blue eyes looking in front and above her. The question that left the other person’s mouth confused her, leading to Zen cocking her head to one side – a strange habit she had while confused – until the wind picked up ever so gently and his scent was pushed into her small nostrils. Vampire…Well. Half. Zen thought to herself, a brow raising as her hands placed themselves onto the tree behind her pushing herself up. ”Mother.” She said, nervousness in her tone. ”You?”
Zen’s eyes looked down, scanning the person’s features and clothing. It was expected of him to attend Hogwarts considering the location the two of them were in, but the colours of his robes made Zen realise why she had never seen him before – or even smelled him. ”You’re in Gryffindor?” She questioned. Not once had Zenevieva seen him, which had confused her considering she had seen; what felt like a million students in the past few months, especially those who transferred in from Ilvermorny. The Novell felt hesitant to ask for his name – or express her dying happiness to find someone who was just like her. Considering she had just met him, she went for the former. ”I’m Zene- Zen.” She began, cutting off her full name as it was just a mouthful. ”And you are..?”

10.XX.2024 Even though he had been straightforward in his approach to the tree, Steve couldn’t help but feel bad that the girl jumped when he started talking. His habit of his mouth moving before anything else got the better of him at times, and this was starting to look like another one of them. He hadn’t even noticed that she had a book in her hands, clearly occupied with that over some random guy walking up to her. But she seemed to understand his question despite the aggressive manner in which he had asked it. “Same,” he responded. In his experience, that was fairly common; female vampires settling down with wizards or other mortal men. The few full male vampires he had encountered were creepy and borderline lecherous. They had existed long past their time and refused to go away, like the residue left after ripping a band-aid off. There was a quick and easy solution, but they always had a way of sticking around much longer than they were welcome.
The girl didn’t say anything immediately but did manage to stand up, instead looking like she was trying to figure out what Steve was, or rather, who he was. They probably had the same questions for each other. “Proud lion. And you’re in Ravenclaw, right?” Since they were pointing out the obvious, he decided to play around with it. From the most recent sentence, he could tell she was one of the Ilvermorny students. Nobody had told him there was another half-vampire here other than him and Nora. He had expected the school to stick all three of them into a room and told them to play nice. Apparently that’s what they did with the werewolves. “Steve. Nice to meet you Zen,” he held out his hand for her, a grin plastered onto his face. “And I have a twin sister too. Nora. She’s also in Gryffindor.” He figured getting that out of the way now was better than keeping the new girl all to himself. Nora would probably get jealous.

Same? Zenevieva thought to herself, drawing in her bottom lip to lightly chew on as she cleared her throat. In the Novell’s case, vampires weren’t exactly popular or well known in the area they had once lived in. There were rumours of many other vampires existing, but were usually given a bad image something that had always confused Zen once she grew up considering most creatures were accepted into the magical world. Although, she found herself beaming a warming smile in Steve’s direction, her pale hand slipping into his own to shake it. How great it felt to be with someone like her. ”That’s right…Ravenclaw.”
Once Steve revealed that his sister was also in Gryffindor, Zenevieva felt her eyes widen slightly. There’s another one? She thought to herself. ”Her name sounds familiar…” The brunette murmured to herself. Though, from her own knowledge when she first transferred to Hogwarts, she had heard word of a few Veelas and wolves here and there but not essentially vampires. The discovery brought comfort for the Novell and soon her hand rested by her side once more, before she bent down, picking up the book that had fallen between the leaves. ”What brings you out here?”

10.XX.2024 With how close their respective dormitories were to one another, it was amazing that they hadn’t met yet. Especially with both him and Nora on the prowl constantly. They had their own distinctive smell, as weird as that sounded, and it was possible that they had overpowered each other enough that Zen here was completely pushed out of their scope of senses. If she was a different year as well, that would mean no classes and thus not crossing each other’s paths. He had to ask though. “What year are you? We’re sixths,” Steve stated, a little too proudly. There was still one more year left (apparently), and if Zen was a seventh year she would probably scoff at his excitement over it. The seventh years never seemed to have much energy left. They were burned out and kind of boring in his opinion. Luckily he wouldn’t be like that, this being his first official year of school ever. Missing the past five would help a lot over the next two years.
“She’s hard to miss. Probably saw her running through the halls or something.” Steve wasn’t sure if the girl wanted him to respond or not, but he felt like filling in the gaps anyways. She was going to be their friend regardless, because that was what vampires did. They grouped up and became buddies. This one seemed a little skittish, but it was nothing he couldn’t change. “The sun,” he said, pointing up at the sky. “It’s finally going away. Not sure about you, but I burn easily.” If he had it his way, he wouldn’t be stuck wearing long-sleeves and pants all year round. They weren’t exactly conducive to warm summer days. Lately, with the temperature starting to dip as fall arrived, it was more tolerable. He would still be subjected to covering his skin though. “What about you? Escaping from the confines?” She had been reading a book after all, though that was what all Ravenclaws did based on what he had heard so far. What was so different about reading outside than inside at that point?

Zenevieva was sure her own scent wasn’t strong enough, even though her mother would always tease that she had too much of a ‘sweet scent’ almost sickly like strong perfume. Even though Steve and his sister Nora were half-vampires, Zen somehow found it difficult to even identify his own scent until the wind hit her. It felt strong, especially as a male and the Novell guessed his sisters would have matched evenly. Though as of recent, Zenevieva had relied on her human senses more, barely taking in the different scents surrounding her, aside from the odd sweet-smelling human.
”Same” Zenevieva smiled, repeating the way Steve had said the adjective before. ”I just somehow to find myself bunched in with the Ilvermorny transfers at the wrong time…” She stated, her hands grabbing onto her sleeves out of nervousness. The Sixth years she had heard of turned out to be Steve and Nora, bringing comfort to the Novell as she could express her pet peeves of being a vampire and the downfalls of it with them. It brought even more comfort to the brunette knowing she could spend her last two years in a wizarding school alongside people who were just like herself.
Once Steve clarified who his sister was, Zenevieva found herself nodding, an “Ah” sound leaving her lips. Zenevieva definitely knew who she was. On a random day, when Zen was heading to one of her classes, with a book in hand – as per usual – and the loud sounds coming from a small brunette filled the halls. Zen was sure she saw many faces that day including Sari Fawley, someone Eli had mentioned many times. The Novell let out a soft laugh, as her eyes followed the half-vampire’s fingers - her hands coming in front of her face to cover her mouth. ”I do too.” She began, referencing to easily being burned. ”Hence why I have a closet filled with sweaters.”
But Zen soon shrugged in response and instead pressed her back against the trunk of the tree, somewhat leaning on it. ”I guess you could say that.” Zen murmured, giving the book a gentle shake. ”I’m always reading something. Even if it’s a book I’ve read before.”

10.XX.2024 Bunched in with the Ilvermorny students. Story of his life. Steve was positive that the Hogwarts students were finally starting to warm up to the idea that he and Nora were from Canada, and were not to be paired with the American hooligans. They took pride in what they did. The Ilvermorny students didn’t deserve to get the credit for the things the Kolstads pulled off. It was sobering that there was another half-vampire prowling around though. They seemed to be a rare breed at the British school, for whatever reason. His mom had always told him that there were more of their kind in Europe, and that the move to the ‘New World’, as some of the ancient vampires called it, would be too much for them. Not that his mom was ancient by any means. She was a newborn in their eyes, just shy of two decades as a vampire. The century old ones had seen some shit, according to her, and were still cautious of halfies. Steve didn’t really care about any of that since he was one foot in the human world and one foot in the vampire one. Not quite respected enough in the latter whereas the former tended to view him as a rare creature. He liked being a topic of interest.
“It’s pretty easy to miss someone here,” Steve added. “I don’t really pay attention in class, so it’s not a surprise that we’ve never seen each other before.” More like he was busy chatting up whoever was unlucky enough to be sitting near him at the time. That could go on for the entirety of the class period if the professor didn’t silence him first. Zen seemed to know Nora though, or at least recognized her, which made sense. While his sister made more of an outward appearance, he liked to work more subtly – not that they didn’t borrow each other’s skillsets from time to time. Nora had an arsenal of traits he liked to use when appropriate. With both of them being extreme extroverts, it was easy to do.
She said she burned easily as well, and that her closet was full of sweaters. Steve laughed, “It’s like we’re almost the same. Guess all of us halfies are like that in the end.” He shrugged his shoulders. Technically he knew that already, it was a hard thing to ignore when having a twin that was basically the same as him. “Could be worse. Could be like our moms and not be able to go out during the day at all. I might dislike the sun, but I still like seeing it sometimes.” Zen went on to say that he was kind of right, mentioning that she was always reading a book. She had been reading when he approached, hadn’t she? That made him feel a little guilty for interrupting her alone rime, but the thought was quickly dashed as he remembered that he rarely did any reading in comparison. “Have a favorite author?” he asked, as if he would actually know the name of any author she gave him. The normal excuse was that he was homeschooled. Surely he could use it again here.

While Vampires were most certainly not common in Zenevieva's family line, she knew from her existence it was potentially something that would carry out in her family line with her children and potentially their own. But the Novell was still a child, with nothing but education and bullies to really worry about. According to her mother, who had been a vampire a few years before Zen's birth - vampires weren't really appreciated in the States. Which was rather evident in both her paternal and maternal extended family. But the young half-vampire was grateful for those who accepted both Zen and her mother...While it was needed of course.
Aside from the stories she had read and her own mother's experience, she had never really met other vampires or known about their experiences, so it was refreshing to stand in front of someone like her. "I definitely think I know who your sister is now..." She responded with a soft smile. "But that's true...I didn't even notice one of my best friends was in the same House as me...Until I found her in my dorms." Mainly because that was Zen's own fault. She didn't think she needed to attend the sorting ceremony since she had her own private one. "I'll make sure to look out for you more often then." She added. It would be much nicer for the young Ravenclaw to push her anxiety away in a class, knowing that someone like herself would be there. To either get her chatting or just for a simple hello. It was reassuring in its own way.
Giggling, Zen couldn't help but agree. Strangely for her, she always found herself wearing short sleeved tee's on the coldest days. Paired with a jacket of course. But during the sunny or even moments when the sun's rays were evident, the half-vampire stuck to sweaters to prevent her arms sporting a dark red colour. There was always disadvantages to being half a dark creature. "Sweater frenzied halfies who crave blood once every month?" She teased. "Definitely sounds like us" But when Steve brought up how their situation could be worse, she found herself nodding in agreement. It was a horrible thing to see when her mother was alive, crawled up in the darkness of the master bedroom, waiting for the hours to tick down and nightfall to fall. "I-It would be...Horrible to not see it I suppose." Even if it made her skin red and horrible. When Steve asked if she had a favourite author, the Novell shook her head lightly. "No particular favourite." She said, looking down at the book in her grasp. "I do like the early novels by Gilderoy's father though...As well as his Voyages with Vampires. Unrealistic and most definitely didn't happen but interesting." She laughed. "Other times I read random textbooks entirely for classes" Zenevieva could honestly talk about books all day.
@steve & you should've never asked

10.XX.2024 Nora was either a mysterious force to be reckoned with, or was like one of those ‘Most Wanted’ posters Steve had seen plastered all over Diagon Alley during the summer months, so it was no surprise than Zen could know her. He felt silly for not noticing the girl sooner though, because it wasn’t like they could hide from each other forever. One strong inhale within a hundred feet and he could spot her, and he knew it was the same for her. That part was still confusing Steve slightly, but he knew he would have to let it go eventually, starting to chalk it up as being oblivious while trying to take in as much of his new school as he could in the first month. He also wanted to blame the school for not putting all of the halfies together in the first week so they could sort each other out and find if they would get along. Obviously he and Nora would with Zen, but it would have been nice to at least know she existed before now. “Right? It’s wild. Pretty sure I’ve never seen a building this big before coming here.” Steve let his gaze wander off towards the castle, which loomed over him wherever he went on the grounds. It was eerie to have it always be present, but also comforting to know it was right there. “Cool. The three of us will definitely have to hang. And figure out if there are more around. Because I don’t trust my nose anymore.”
What he did trust was the fact that the sun would always have it for him and the other vampires, no matter how hidden it was behind clouds or lazily sitting on the horizon. The sharp beams still pierced his eyes and burned his skin despite him giving it all of his love. It was an addiction he couldn’t kick. Staying inside for too many days in a row had him jonesing for the sunlight. Hard. That was definitely the human half of him craving it, maybe as much as the vampire half did with blood. Unfortunately Vitamin D and iron supplements weren’t nearly enough to satiate either of his needs, leaving him to resort to his more base desires in the end: a blood bag and a sunburn. “I wish we didn’t have to drink,” he said, not really intending it to be reciprocated but also curious to see what her take was on blood drinking.
“Did you know the candy store in Hogsmeade sells blood pops? But you have to ask the shopkeeper for the real ones, because they sell the fake ones on the shelves.” Steve had learned this during his first trip to the store, immediately getting hooked on the smell of his favorite snack. But they weren’t with the ones that the normal kids were buying. Those were faux blood pops that allowed the edgier students to pretend they were vampires, turning their mouths redder and redder with every bite. No, Honeydukes had the real thing, and like he explained to Zen, they could get them if they asked. The candy store had their backs, and he was sure they would have stuff for the other special students, like the werewolves. He was sure they had something they liked there, like a giant stick or real bones to chew on. Steve was pretty sure that werewolves wanting to chew things was like vampires to their blood pops. Their human instincts couldn’t keep them away from what they desired deep down in their monstrous cores.
Gilderoy? Steve had never heard of that name before, but if his dad wrote adventure books, and ones about vampires at that, he sounded like an interesting fellow. “Textbooks are boring,” he said, waving off the comment entirely. He didn’t want to hear about those silly things. They were guidelines for how to learn. Steve preferred watching the professor go over the topics than to have to read about them in a book. “But tell me more about this Voyages with Vampires book. Because I’ve read Dracula before, and let me tell you, they definitely got his character completely wrong.” Like a stake to the heart being the only way to kill him? Come on. A stake to anyone’s heart would do that. Admittedly so, Steve did like the concept of having to stay in hallowed ground while sleeping, particularly in coffins. He had wanted one for his thirteenth birthday, but apparently that was a hard no from his father, which was funny because he had no say in their vampire affairs at the end of the day. Fae Kolstad held way more power over the family than her husband did, which was why they were at Hogwarts and not Durmstrang (the northern school being their father’s alma mater). Hogwarts was more Steve’s kind of place than the Durmstrang seemed to be though, having heard enough stories over the years from his dad to make him want to yank out his nonexistent fangs just to escape having to listen to another one. Plus it was hella cold up there, and that meant a lot coming from a Canadian.
“I need to read more. If you ever have any suggestions, bring them my way. I’ll read pretty much anything as long as it’s not a textbook,” Steve added, kind of hoping that she would direct him towards the Voyages with Vampires book. The more fantastical the story was, the more like it would be to hold his attention. The problem he had with most books was that they all would eventually hit a dry spell in the excitement. If he was going to be reading hundreds of pages, he wanted to be captivated the whole time, not bored out of his mind. Too many fell victim to his short attention span though, and were quickly replaced with a trip outdoors. Getting sunburned while enjoying himself outside was well worth it though, and something that a book would never be able to replace.

Somewhere inside the Novell churned her stomach with guilt for not realising who the twins were earlier. Especially as the two were half-vampires like herself, one blow within the wind would send their scents up Zen’s nose and their secrets ultimately revealed, similar to the way both Zenevieva and Steve had met today. Zen found it weird that she could rely on her instinct and from the ability to pick up strange scents, but she didn’t really question it. As long as she wasn’t…particularly bullied the same way she had been before, she was open telling others of her ‘background’ if they simply…Asked. That is, if she plucked up some kind of courage to respond. And with Hogwarts’ failed attempts to even put them together, it made their meeting a little unique. The Novell couldn’t help but force a small smile in agreement to his comment. She wasn’t even sure if Ilvermorny was this big. But she knew most of the hiding places the school had thankfully to Elijah Flemming, who hid from the bullies as well. ”Sounds fine by me.” She told him. If someone had approached Zen days before to describe she would eventually have friends, she would’ve told said person they were lying.
Unlike Steve who seemed to enjoy the sunlight and the danger it's rays brought to their kind, Zenevieva absolutely hated it. For days on end she could stay within her home, reading the finest books and even ones that seemed interesting to potentially give a read. Her head hung low as she thought of the last time she truly enjoyed herself in the sun, arms burning to a red crisp but she didn't mind it. It was alongside her parents - well her father considering her mother would have burned to death. But her presence was with them, somehow. Green eyes lifted at his statement, while her lips forced a smile. She wished the exact same thing. Halfies didn't have all the cool abilities like their vampire parents but still had to drink. She didn't know how her mother enjoyed the salty, metal taste of it. "Me too." She responded, pushing her hair back with a few fingers. "I'm still...Mad that we didn't get our mom's cool powers." And instead were given the tiniest fangs and the ability of being easily sun burnt!
Discovering what truly hid in Hogsmeade, Zein's eyes widened slowly. Blood pops were her favourite candy...And ultimately her favourite snack. "Really? In Hogsmeade?" She questioned, her interest peaking. "Have you...Had any yourself?" It seemed like he had from the way he described them, knowing the true location of the Pops. The blood pops back in America were enjoyable, but not necessarily as great as her mother's own recipe. Common type O blood along with secret Novell ingredients. It seemed nice that even businesses had the backs of demi-humans, providing to the vampires needs. It was just a shame not everyone was like that. She wondered if it were the same for other part dark creatures, werewolves for instance that also seemed to roam amongst Hogwarts. Zen was sure she hadn't met one just yet.
Aside from actual novels, gathering information from textbooks was Zenevieva's second favourite thing to do during the day. In her mother's old office it didn't take long for the young Novell to read almost half of them, but the other half were stored away once she had to move in with her aunt Adèle. She still hadn't bucked up the confidence to remove them all from their boxes without potentially having a breakdown. "You're just reading them wrong." She told him, waving off his comment in return. Zenevieva couldn't help but snort at his remarks around Dracula and while he wasn't wrong, Zen fairly enjoyed reading the stories based on him. Dracula himself was a strange man, afraid of what lied ahead because of his inability to speak amongst others and even walk in the sun. Blood was a strong craving amongst them all, even the halfies. At least that's what Zen believed. "I found Dracula's stories interesting...The stake to the heart was kind of ridiculous though." But most fantasy novels were. Eventually Zen would find the true history of vampires and even if Dracula truly existed. They all had to start from somewhere right? "Gilderoy's interpretation aren't bad for entertainment purposes...But in terms of history or information, you can tell where the grey areas are.” Especially with the man’s claims that the vampire at hand could only eat lettuce after meeting him. Even during her own times when it was that time to stomach a monthly intake of blood, nothing else appealed to Zen — instead it made her completely and utterly sick.
The Novell laughed softly at the addition, nodding. ”Depending on the genre’s you’re used to reading or find a good…kick from.” Zen paused briefly. ”I’m sure I can suggest something. Though I would recommend reading that Voyages with Vampires. Just so you can see the ridiculousness of it.” Just similarly to Dracula’s stories, Zenevieva found the novels as an introduction to a comedian aspect for the Gilderoy. That is if he ever wrote anything again. ”I think it’s not too long. Something to get you started into eventually reading longer things.”

10.XX.2024 “Cool,” he grinned. His brain kept repeating itself, telling him how awesome it was going to be to have another half-vampire friend to talk to. Nora was great and all, but their whole twin thing made it so easy to know exactly what the other was thinking and feeling that there were barely any surprises between them. He wanted to see how the rest of his kind lived and what they thought about their situation and powers. The shared experience with his sister was probably important to pass on to others as well. Twins were always hotly debated when it came to their secrets and abilities, but half-vampire twins was even more interesting (in his opinion). “I wish we could have the powers without the blood drinking, but then I guess we wouldn’t be vampires,” Steve reasoned with himself. He didn’t know what the hunger was really like, just what would happen if he didn’t have his small allotment. That was agonizing enough that he couldn’t even start to imagine what his mom dealt with on a daily basis if she missed a meal.
Blood pops were seemingly loved by vampires and their spawn alike, the flicker of interest in Zen’s eyes telling Steve that she was also a connoisseur of the candy. “I bought a box when I visited over the summer,” he held his hands out to approximate the size of said box, “And I’m just about to run out. Thank god we can go there once a month to get more.” A slow and painful death from lack of blood pops would be the worst. The candy didn’t actually satiate the bloodthirst, but it curbed the edge enough throughout the school day that he typically didn’t want any by the time dinner rolled around. If he could survive solely on the pops, he would. They itched the scratch that he couldn’t reach. “I think they’re better than any that I’ve had at home,” Steve mused. There was obviously a different taste to each of them, unless an entire batch was made from the same blood donor, but the ones over here were simply superior in quality. “If you catch me at dinner later, I’ll give you a few,” Steve offered. Anything for a fellow halfie.
Zen’s surprise at his Dracula comment was funny; even though they had just met, he should have realized that bringing a novel into the discussion was going to elicit a response for her. He didn’t spend a lot of time really breaking down and delving into the few books he had read over the years. To him, that was a waste of time. One good read was all a book needed, and then he could check it off his list. “Of course it’s ridiculous. I find it hard to believe that he could survive decapitation too.” Though that had probably more to do with destroying the heart, which was potentially the source of his evil. Steve liked to think that Dracula wasn’t a bad guy, more that he failed to adapt to modernization. The world had changed around him rapidly, and he never really had a chance to make it. Learning about others takes on his kind interested him though, and Zen seemed to think this Voyages with Vampires book was part of the way there. “Is that in the library? I haven’t spent much time there yet. It’s all so…overwhelming?” Plus he had to be quiet. Quiet and Kolstad didn’t exactly work together hand in hand.

FINALLY HAVING HALF-vampires around her was surely going to benefit Zenevieva in the long run, especially as they shared the struggle of feeding on blood. It wasn’t exactly her favourite thing to do, even if she only had to consume a small amount every month or so, it still felt weird. Zen couldn’t help but agree with his point, even nodding in agreement. Though, what powers did most half-vampires have? She couldn’t walk on walls like her mother, or even turn into a bat or even have full-fledged fangs. (They were baby-looking ones at best) She just had a simple alluring voice, but even then, Zenevieva hated to sing. ”Sometimes…I wish I was just like Mom. A full-vampire.” Even if it meant giving up her time in the sun and naturally roaming around at night…And even having only an appetite for blood…Zen believed she could do it. ”Only because I’m kind of useless like this. We just…Kind of have that voice thing and thin appearances.” Not to mention, being easily sunburnt. Not that Zen even minded.
Any mention of blood pops instantly had Zenevieva’s attention, especially as her aunt struggled month after month to make a decent tasting version of her mother’s. To the half-vampire, it wasn’t exactly hard to make, and she knew how to do so from her mother’s teachings, but Adèle always wanted to make it first. Her aunt was somewhat adorable at times. Watching Steve’s hands form the size of the box, Zen only took more interest in it. A box like that would last her many months, especially whenever she was feeling anxious and had the need to chew on an extra blood-pop or two. It wasn’t enough to subdue the blood craving she got monthly, but it provided as a small starter for the blood she would have later on. ”C-Can I…” Zen paused, swallowing before she spoke again. ”Possibly come…With you next time?” It would make things a lot easier for Adèle, especially as she had no clue how to take after a child. Let alone a half-vampire. Zen had always thought the batches she had at home with her mother were the best tasting ones. She had no clue who their blood donor was — possibly her father — but their blood made the candy sweeter than anything. Ah. How she missed the old days. ”I-I’d like that!” She said, accepting his offer.
Dracula as a whole had many different approaches from different audiences. Adults found him stupid, unable to adapt to a life in which changed around him. Children found him frightening, his looks, (or the description of him from the novels Dracula read), but Zen found him simply fascinating. Though Gilderoy’s novels were filled with a man’s true fantasy. To explore a world and live a life that simply didn’t exist. It was the genre and tropes of fantasy at its finest. She remembered reading the first novel of his with a smile on her face simply because of how silly it was. But Gilderoy Lockhart was still her favourite author. ”It’s all make-believe. Just like how No-Maj’s think magic is. Pure make-believe.” She spoke, referring to Gilderoy’s older novels. At his question to the book she mentioned, the brunette nodded. ”You can always…Request to take the book back to your dorm.” She laughed, holding her hand in front of her face as she did so. Zen had taken many books out of Ilvermorny’s library and now Hogwarts. ”I-I take it being silent in the library isn’t…Your thing…”

10.XX.2024 The admiration towards full vampires was not something Steve could share with Zen one-hundred percent. While he felt like it would be fun to be full, there were a lot of things that he had watched his own mother struggle with. She couldn’t go out in the sun, the group their family was a part of didn’t like that she still used magic and her wand from time to time (Steve assumed that was a hard habit to break since she had been a witch prior), the same group didn’t take kindly to him and Nora being only half-vampire, and his mother had to drink a lot of blood. He was sure Zen knew all of these things already though, and she was free to wish for it as much as she wanted. If there was an option to be turned full he would probably take it too, just so his mom wouldn’t have to outlive the rest of the family all on her own.
“Have you ever used the voice?” he asked, trying to turn a positive spin on their abilities. “I try not to because I’m more confident in getting where I want on my own.” And there was something skeevy about making girls bend to his absolute will with just a word. There were plenty out there that he could flirt and have fun with just by using his human voice. The alluring voice had become more of a party trick than a useful tool.
Having Zen tag along on the next Hogsmeade trip had Steve nodding his head quickly. “Of course you can! I’m sure my sister will tag along too, she might even stay the whole time if you’re there.” They could be the three half-vampire amigos! Only defeated by sunlight and pretty humans. The latter was probably only a problem Steve had, but still. “Perfect,” he said, quickly pulling a pen out of his pocket and scribbling a note on his forearm to remember to bring blood pops to dinner. He wouldn’t remember otherwise. “It’s the perfect dessert, and everyone else won’t even think about it since they eat those fake things all the time.”
Right. Make believe. The things that were all very real in his life (except stuff like Dracula, which wasn’t). No-majs would freak out if they knew vampires and magic really existed, though probably more about the vampires. He always figured that magic would be easier to explain to them since it could do so much good. All vampires did was sleep all day and drink blood. Even an innocent act such as using donated blood for their meals could be seen as taboo.
They could take the books out? “Wait really? We can do that?” The local library back home was only open during the morning, which usually wasn’t when he was up, and his mom couldn’t really take them during the day. Once he was old enough to go himself, the woods and girls were more interesting than the library was, and chatting them up there would probably come with a strung shushing noise from the librarian. “Yeah, not my thing. Too much to talk about with people.”

HER REASONS FOR WANTING the life of a full fledged vampire were minor in comparison to the life she would’ve wanted as a No-Maj. Being half of both sides only left half-vampires around in a strange state. They couldn’t become bats, didn’t have nocturnal vision or walk on walls or ceilings…Instead they had a diet of two sides, human food and a small quantity of blood, a thin appearance and the disadvantage of being sunburnt fairly easily. All things Zenevieva hated. She preferred the night anyway and strangely enjoyed the pleasures of blood over a Sunday Roast. If she were a full-vampire, she knew she wouldn’t miss out on much. ”O-Once or t-twice…” The voice still confused her, but it explained the parts in her life why her father would say she was an incredible singer. The brunette couldn’t really relate with Steve in that aspect though, considering Zen was too nervous most times to use it. But she knew she would rather avoid asking for something she wanted instead of manipulate her way into it.
Smiling in joy, Zen felt nothing but excitement for their next trip as well as to see Steve’s sister, Nora. From how he described her, she seemed to be the polar opposite to Zen, loud (but hopefully not too loud), allowing Zen to make…Another friend. That is if her and Steve were friends now. ”I-I look f-forward to it…” She stuttered. It was nice to know she would be bonding with others like herself, considering she had a hard time bonding with humans in the first place. Some were too rude, some too pretty or handsome (thanks bisexuality) and others were just…too loud. Steve was nice though, on the nicer spectrum of people she had met. The Ravenclaw raised a brow at his note taking, making her own mental note to get him a notepad. ”I t-think it’s great s-study candy also.”
At his question, Zen nodded. Hadn’t he known before? Most libraries allowed it, but since Zen and her mother weren’t the type to be up early unless necessary on the half-vampire’s behalf, her father browsed for books, collecting ones he assumed his daughter would enjoy. The majority she did, purchasing her own copy shortly after she read the libraries copy and took them with her on her move to Adele’s home and even re-read them there. Smiling small, Zen could understand it. Steve had spoken more than the Novell during their entire encounter, but he didn’t seem to mind. It was natural for her to nod in response or only speak out a few words at a time. She feared her stutter would be mocked, the same way Bianca had done so for a few years, but she was simply…Reserved in general. ”M-Maybe you could t-talk for me in c-classes.” She joked. Participation was one area the Ravenclaw’s grades lacked in and Steve seemed confident to speak about anything. She’d pay him back with study help.
While the suggestion was a joke, Zen considered the upside if he took her up on the offer. It would mean the two would actually be...potential friends and the overall thought of it tugged a smile upon her lips. As her lips parted to speak once more, the soft sound of bells nearby cut her off and soon after the scents of students probably shuffling and hustling around too. It was a sign that classes, study periods and even a free period were over and lunch was in order, leading up to Zen's next brave suggestion. "D-Do...You want to g-grab lunch to-together?" It was one she would hopefully see a positive result in, and hopefully even the rest of her day would be enjoyable, considering after all, they were the same.
